• At a Glance: For the first time this season, the Canadiens have won five straight games after defeating the Boston Bruins 3-2 Saturday night at the Bell Centre. Jaroslav Halak got the win, his 22nd of the season, making 21 saves on the night. The Canadiens got a pair of goals from Sergei Kostitsyn after Andrei Markov opened the scoring 6:02 into the first period with a power-play goal. Blake Wheeler scored early in the second period for the Bruins and Milan Lucic made it 3-2 with about eight minutes to play, making for a nail-biting finish.

• Key Moments:
With a few minutes to play, Halak made an excellent save on Marco Sturm, robbing the Bruins forward of what look liked a sure goal and preserving the Montreal win.

• What It Means: Montreal improves to 35-29-6 for 76 points, still tied with the Philadelphia Flyers for sixth spot in the Eastern Conference. The win also opens up a four-point gap between the Canadiens and Bruins, who hold down the eighth spot.

• What's Next: The Canadiens have a relatively light week coming up with a game Tuesday in New York against the Rangers and then to Toronto to take on the the Maple Leafs next Saturday.

No games for a while so something to ponder. Which team do we want to face in the 1st round? I like the way we stack up against every team except Pittsburgh. I just think Crosby would be very ready to play in Montreal but almost everybody media/and other teams just don't see the Habs coming. With all the injuries we had all year and now with our leading goal scorer coming back, I think we can knock off a top seed. So I throw this out; which team do you guys want the Habs to face and why?

SPATS's picture
Doesn't look like it'll happen because we're not gonna finish 8th, but I'd like to see Washington. I think we have the speed and skill to play with them, now we have the depth too, so it'll come down to goaltending and Halak has Ovy's #

What a beauty-full hit by Brother Andre ! Nothing made me happier than what I witnessed last night. It's been a long time coming for the Luchiken. I think yesterday was a statement game and a changing of the guard. Sweet revenge for last year's fiasco with the B's. Funny how things change in just less than a year. After last year's early playoff exit I was thinkin' its gonna be a long time before we're able to compete with them again, and now look, 5-1 ! Whatever everyone is doing right now.......keep rolling with it. Habs, OLE !

EricInStL's picture
I was near the penalty box, and said to the other guy besides my wife, watch Lucic pound AK. But then we got a penalty and he had to go back to the bench to keep the PP going. Lucic has not been the same since all that talk of comparing him to Neely. In Guy Boucher I trust.

EricInStL's picture
Knowing our cap space, if you were the GM for Edmonton would you go after Price with an offer sheet that you knew Montreal would not be able to match it since they would have to offer the same or more to Halak.... In Guy Boucher I trust.

Nick_Habs1's picture
Oilers have 2 good goales already. They will not go after Price or Halak.

EricInStL's picture
who ???? Deslauriers ? if you could get Price on the cheap, you do it. I can see someone putting an offer sheet. Ok how about Chicago. You've got to figure their #1 draft pick will be in the high 20s, so practically worthless. In Guy Boucher I trust.

deuce6's picture
If it's cheap, we match..Neither goalie is going anywhere unless another GM offers 4M+ for either tender, but I am willing to bet Gauthier would match anything thrown at him for Halak... Besides, would those teams that may offer 4M+ be willing to give up their premium picks? Don't worry about it..

I dunno but since Mathieu Darche arived in Montreal and Halak is starting more and more, the team is playing better and having Moore on the roster helps. But. I'll savour the W, and I do hope that they keep it up down the stretch and if they make the playoffs, still other teams will be fighting with us for that 7th or 8th position. But. I got that feeling, feeling that everything is going to be allright and I am slowly getting playoff fever dancing in my head with oour Canadiens. Is this a good sign? "We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets "

Anyone else go to the Habs/Nords Alumni charity game at the Bell Centre today? I was there, Habs won 11-5, I think Lafleur could play the powerplay for today's Habs. He still looks great...

mb's picture
I was there too... Actually, it ended 11-6 (Nordiques scored with 2 seconds left in the 3rd), but no one noticed it, really. I agree that Lafleur would still be great, it was pretty fun to watch him play. He almost had a hat trick... Well, in fact, he DID have one, if it wasn't of this no-goal call!

Psycho29's picture
I protest their last goal! The green light always overides the red light!!! LOL!!! It was a great time, Habs and Nordiques fans actually getting along together!!!!! Sevigny was awesome in nets! Hey everyone, check out Gaston Therrien on RDS sometime this week. He got cut for stitches above his eye (I think). I'm sure the RDS boys will be bugging him on L'Antichambre....

awesome win for our habz over the beantown bums. the attack attack approach is working. the stay back defensive play wasnt before. speedy small players must be unleashed to do their thing. ovy just nailed a guy from behind, yuh think the league will crack down on a star player, i doubt it. hate the single point fot shootout win. should be two pts for a win, zero for a loss, weather in a win comes from regular,o.t. or shootout play.too any teams bunched together because of the single point.

ooder's picture
i must say Dave Tippet did one hell of a job in pheonix. in the offseason i was actually hoping he was the guy we would hire. got a bum deal in dallas but is really proving his worth in pheonix ------------------ "enough said" is never enough said

TomNickle's picture
Tippet, T.Murray and Boudreau will be nominated and Tippet should get it hands down. Bone-head move of the year goes to Doug Sherman of the Avs for trading Wolski for a prospect and a player that doesn't like hockey.

SeriousFan09's picture
Joe Sacco should also get nominated I suspect, Colorado did a lot with a brand-new roster of mostly guys you never heard about. As for Mueller not liking hockey, maybe he really didn't like playing in a ****hole hockey 'market' with more fans of the local bowling leagues than the hockey team. He has a goal and 6 assists in his last 5 with Colorado, not bad at all.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

TomNickle's picture
Sacco should get nominated but I don't think they'll make the playoffs which is why I didn't include him. It isn't fair of me to bring up what people speculate about Mueller but if you see Wolski and Mueller play there's no comparing the two. Wolski is far and away a better hockey player and should have been kept. Imagine what Wolski would've fetched at the draft?

SeriousFan09's picture
I think it's a little early to call, maybe they know something about Wolski that Phoenix doesn't and he'll hit a wall later. It's not often that you seem to have an instant winner or loser in a trade unless one of the people involved in that trade is Mike Milbury.

I think the Avalanche can stay in the playoff race, they picked up a win today and that has them only 3 points out of the division lead.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

TomNickle's picture
Point taken but Vancouver plays almost all of their remaining games at home so their record the rest of the way should be above .600 and the Flames, Wings and Preds are the teams trailing them. I think Detroit and Calgary will get in. I think they'll be fighting with Nashville for 8th.

SeriousFan09's picture
Didn't say they'd catch the Canucks but staying 2nd in the division usually indicates a playoff spot unless you're a Southeast team. The Flames are such a mess at some points in the season who can say they'll make playoffs? I think the Avs can stay ahead of the Preds as well.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

TomNickle's picture
I give the Flames and Preds the benefit of the doubt because they play playoff hockey every night with their lack of scoring.

SeriousFan09's picture
I know I should root for a Canadian team and while I know Keenan wasn't the answer to their coaching problem, I also know Sutter isn't their solution. I want them to fall out of the playoffs as a bit of karmic payback for Sutter hiring through nepotism.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

TomNickle's picture
Oh don't worry they're both going down in flames. No pun intended. That team has too many pieces to build around for Darryl to be screwing this up. Trading Dustin Boyd for a 4th round pick is outrageous and sending Phaneuf packing instead of Regehr is braindead. If there is one GM who's philosophy is out of whack it's his. Nobody on that team to compliment Iginla and an overstocked blueline protecting a self involved goalie who's only interested in how many days off he gets in the offseason and how many starts he gets during the regular season. It's funny that one of the knocks on Keenan was that he played Kipper too much but it now appears that he would've unleashed hell if he hadn't. Maybe Kipper would've gone home if he didn't get 70 games.

amvanimere's picture
Pretty sure the Mueller has at least a point in all of his games in Colorado thus far. There's a difference between not liking playing hockey and not liking playing hockey in Phoenix.

TomNickle's picture
That speaks more about professionalism than it does about the conditions in Phoenix. Like it or not, playing hockey is his job and if a change of scenery helps, great. I'm saying that Wolski is a better player than Mueller and brings much more to the table. If Colorado is interested in making the playoffs, that was a bad trade.

andrewberkshire's picture
Speaking of Dallas, did they EVER mess up hiring Marc Crawford! With the forward depth they have that team should be very good, not the crap they are.

ooder's picture
crawford sucks, he won the cup with sakic, roy, forsberg, bourque. over rated and a dirtbag.. see bertuzzi incident ------------------ "enough said" is never enough said

HFX-HabFan's picture
Actually Crawford was out and Bob Hartley was in by the time Ray Bourque made his way to Denver. But yes, he did hoist the Cup as the Avs' bench boss in '96.

ooder's picture
oops ma bad ------------------ "enough said" is never enough said

TomNickle's picture
You can't pin what happened with Bertuzzi and Moore on Crawford. If a coach wants retribution, he doesn't want it to the point that the player he's after never plays again. That's on Bertuzzi and nobody else.

andrewberkshire's picture
You're completely wrong Tom. Both Crawford and Burke are at the very least AS at fault as Bertuzzi over the Moore incident. Burke even threatened Moore in a press conference before the game, saying he would get what he deserved, and to keep his head up.

TomNickle's picture
Are you telling me that Brian Burke, Marc Crawford and Todd Bertuzzi sat down before the game and had a conversation diagramming how Bertuzzi would follow Moore up the ice, punch him in the back of the head and then slam his head into the ice? I am completely wrong? If your boss tells you to assault a person and you do it, is it your boss' fault or yours? 90 point scorers don't stay unemployed in the NHL and if Bertuzzi had decided not to do what he did, there would have been no long term career hindering consequences. You are completely wrong Andrew. Marc Crawford and Brian Burke may not have had sincere remorse over what happened to Steve Moore but Todd Bertuzzi is the only one to blame for that incident. Do you think Burke and Crawford wanted to lose Bertuzzi for the rest of the year?

Xtrahabsfan's picture
It was a tko from behind to the side of MooRE'S FACE ,IN FACT LUCHICKEN gave A.K. the same shot last night but that's ok,eh.....

TomNickle's picture
I don't understand what you're talking about. In what way did I defend what Bertuzzi did?

ooder's picture
well moore already fought cooke in that game. i see no other reason why bertuzzi went after the guy other than the coach telling him that the fight wasn't enough. then again this is pure speculation, ------------------ "enough said" is never enough said

Clay4bc's picture
How about this - Bertuzzi and Naslund were best friends. And what Bertuzzi did was not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Listening to people, you would think he tried to kill moore. Moore was hurt because of the way he landed on the ice, and then everyone (including several of his own teammates) jumped on him. _________________ Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

andrewberkshire's picture
Are you insane Clay? Not as bad as people make it out to be? He punched him in the back of the head, then jumped him with weight on his neck, smashing his face into the ice. He ended his career, and got suspended for 17 games. It's the biggest example of the NHL sweeping something under the carpet in its history.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
He punched him from behind to the side of his face .....

TomNickle's picture
That was one of the best open ice bodychecks I've ever seen. Naslund with his head down, Moore with a perfectly clean hit to the chest, right under the chin. And Naslund was notorious for skating with his head down. That hit was blown out of proportion because it was a 3rd liner hitting a star player. If it had been Karel Rachunek that hit Eric Lindros and Paul Kariya, they would've been called dirty too.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
And what about the Moore Knee on Knee hit to Naslund......You know what would of happened to Moore if he tried that *** on Grets,Cement Head WOULD OF KILLED HIM!

TomNickle's picture
I don't recall Moore ever going knee on knee with Naslund. I don't recall saying that the Canucks shouldn't have responded either.

HFX-HabFan's picture
Except I don't think Karel Rachunek ever hit anyone. But I wholeheartedly agree with your point.

ooder's picture
he pulled moore in, punched him in the back of the head and then landed on top of him. bertuzzi is way heavier and bigger then moore... what did he think would happen??? daisies would spring out of the ice and soften the fall ------------------ "enough said" is never enough said

TomNickle's picture
It's taking it a little lightly saying that it was the way Moore fell. It didn't help that Bertuzzi slammed his head into the ice either. Are you forgetting that he punched him, from behind, in the side of the head? Crawford didn't do those things even if he wanted retribution. Bertuzzi got the biggest joke of a suspension in the history of the league for what he did. Should have sat a full regular season and playoffs for it. Instead, he got to sit out the lockout like everyone else.

daveho29's picture
If it was a beer league game and I did what Bertuzzi did to Moore, right now I would be sitting in prison. That is where Bertuzzi should have been sent and not just getting a joke of a suspension.

TomNickle's picture
I agree

TomNickle's picture
Something that drives me absolutely bonkers this time of year is the point for an overtime or shootout loss. I did some extended research on it and here's what I've got since the lockout. The following scenarios would have held true without a point earned for an ot or shootout loss. 2008-2009 Season - New Jersey and Washington switch #2(NJ) and #3(WSH). - Calgary wins the Northwest instead of Vancouver(#5). - Anaheim is 6th, St.Louis 7th, Columbus 8th. Important notes: **Anaheim knocked out the #1 seed(San Jose). **Vancouver would've played the team they lost to(CHI) a round earlier. 2007-2008 Season - Boston doesn't make the playoffs and Carolina does. - Ottawa is the 5 seed and not 7 - Rangers are the 7 seed and not 5. - Flyers are 8 seed and not 6. Important Notes: **All of that shuffling in the East could've changed EVERYTHING. 2006-2007 Season - Habs make the playoffs, Islanders don't. - Lightning earn #3 seed as division winner and Thrashers fall to 6th. - Nashville earns the #1 as division winner and Red Wings fall to 4. - Sharks earn #2 seed with division win and Ducks fall to 6th. - Avalanche would've made the playoffs instead of the Flames. Important Notes: **Lightning have to play as a low end seed instead of a high seed. **Sharks would have been a high seed instead of a low seed road team. 2005-2006 Season - Vancouver makes the playoffs and Edmonton doesn't. Important Note: **Edmonton doesn't go to the Cup Final.

5 QUESTIONS:

1. What's the biggest difference between the Habs that just won 5 games straight and the struggling-for-500 team we've watched all year?

2. Which ONE player's game has been most improved since the Olympic break?

3. Who is the best/most surprising 'role player' the Habs added this year.

4. Which ONE player are you most afraid of losing this summer?

5. Which ONE player would you most like to lose this summer?

EricInStL's picture
1) Stability and reliability 2) Gill 3) Darche 4) No one actually 5) No one 4 and 5 are basically the same answer as I will not cry if we lose Pleks to someone who overpays. And oddly enough, no one will overpay for anyone other than Pleks. In Guy Boucher I trust.

HFX-HabFan's picture
1- Might I dare say that Darche and Moore are better fits in the lineup than others who went before them? 2- I might be the only one here, but Hamrlik looks like he benefitted from the rest over the break. Dude was sucking wind in late-January/early-February. He's a great guy to have as your number three d-man. I thought he played a perfect "under the radar" game last night against the B's. 3- Darche has been a revelation and a feel-good story. 4- Pleks, if only because we won't get anything for him, and we won't have enough cap space to adequately replace him. 5- Hamrlik...in spite of the yeoman's work he has given us this year in Markov's absence, it is strictly for cap reasons. A number three d-man shouldn't make five and a half million on any team. Deal him to a team in the West with a young D corps and cap space (Kings? Blues?) and thank him for his service.

andrewberkshire's picture
1) Playing like a team, more stability on all 4 lines. Hamrlik and Spacek getting a rest is also huge. 2) Sergei Kostitsyn, he's been great defensively all season, but he's finally been able to break through and add offense at the same time. 3) Sergei again, he's played on both wings on every line this season, and played well in all situations. He's only gotten better since Moore was acquired. 4) Plekanec, no question. If either goalie is lost, we're still left with an amazing goalie. We have no replacement for Plekanec. 5) Hamrlik, strictly for cap reasons. I love the guy but we can't afford him and Plekanec.

TomNickle's picture
1. They are getting possession of the puck down low instead of dumping it in and sitting back. 2. Jaroslav Spacek 3. Mathieu Darche, I thought Glumac would be in this role. 4. Carey Price or Jaro Halak 5. Roman Hamrlik(money issue only).

SeriousFan09's picture
1. Stability above and below, The top and Bottom six are in good coordination and the ability to roll 4 lines is making us much more competitive.

2. Andrei Markov or Sergei Kostitsyn

3. Hal Gill, Habs PK has been defined by him from the star.

4. Plekanec

5. Spacek, for the cap space to keep others. I can't believe I've had to use HTML code today for paragraph breaks.

SeriousFan09's picture
Would've had to pay a price in a trade to have someone take Huet's contract that Stan Bowman wasn't willing to pay I guess and I'm doubting the owners liked the idea of paying Huet 5.6 million to be in nets for their AHL team instead. They'll get dropped from the playoffs and Bowman will get cart blanche to deal with the situation any way he has to.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

TomNickle's picture
The thing that will really bite the Hawks brass in the behind is that they've been preaching Cup or bust. Obviously nobody is going to take on Huet's contract but there's no reason they couldn't have added a a better goaltender with playoff experience.

PJ Stock said last night on HNIC, habs Dmen lead the NHL with the most giveaways: 1) Gill 2) Hamrlik 3) Spacek 4) O'Byrne In other words, among 30 teams habs defence is #1 in giveaways.not something to be proud of, when thinking about the playoffs. So if habs make the playoffs, they will be swept in 4 straight, because of their crappy defence. HABS ARE A REGULAR SEASON TEAM, NOT A PLAYOFF TYPE TEAM. they will fold like a cheap suit. they will play like their little girl(Pleks) who never shows up in the playoffs. I sure help they don't resign him. this team is too small and too soft to do anything except sleep thru the playoffs, and we all know that!

Personally, I really don't care who we face in the playoffs. Whether it's Buffalo, Pittsburgh or Washington we should be ready either way and our goal should be to win, so it doesn't matter who we face. Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

nickster13's picture
Man that Nicklas Backstrom is something else, they could be a top team even without ovechkin since Backstrom is a franchise player himself. In the playoffs we have a chance against anyone if we play hard and solid defensively since the goals will come, most of the top teams dont have top goalies with the exception of Vancouver, Buffalo and Jersey (but with Brodeur will the hall of famer show up or the Olympic bust? more likely the HOFer). So gimme Pittsburgh whos cinderella year is coming to a close real soon
