Habs get some help – and not

posted by Pat Hickey at 20h25 EST on Mar 14

With only two games on the Canadiens' schedule this week – Tuesday against the Rangers in New York and Saturday in Toronto – this is the time for those teams around Montreal to use some of those games in hand. That leads to intense scoreboard watching and there was some good – and not so good – news for the Canadiens Sunday.

The ninth-place New York Rangers beat sixth-place Philadelphia and that moved the Rangers to within five points of the Canadiens going into Tuesday's game. But the Rangers are down to one game in hand. Philadelphia and Montreal are tied at 76 points and the Flyers have two games in hand.

Two other teams chasing the Canadiens – Tampa Bay and Atlanta – both lost. Tampa remains eight points back with two games in hand. Atlanta picked up a point by losing in a shootout and is nine back with two games in hand.

Seriously, does anyone really think that Ovechkin will get a suspension??? With Colin (see no evil) Campbell in charge??? This guy alone is making the NHL look like a complete joke of a sports league when it comes to crap like this. I've said it before (and even had a certain poster on here attack me over it), but I will say it again...I don't know what qualified Colin Campbell for the  job in the first place, and I also don't know how he contines to keep his job???

habsguy's picture

I only saw a replay of the Downie play,  I didn't see where the puck was or what happened before,  it didn't look bad to me???

crabvader's picture

He put his weight onto Crosby's leg. You've never seen a hit like that because unintentionally, that doesn't happen.

nick's picture

Wow, lots hits and injuries yesterday. Should be interesting to see how the league responds given some of the big names involved.

If Downie gets hit with 4-5 game suspension and Overchkin doesnt get anything... It'll just goto show how much of a joke the head office is, not to mention turn some fans off the sport due to shear incompetence.

Danno's picture

Just keep winning and you don't need to look at the scoreboard.

Go Habs Go!

Had a look at that Crosby-Downie incident.

Pretty gruesome, doesn't look good for the Kid, but there's no way that you can intentionally do something like that. Crosby kept his leg in front of Downie to keep ahead of him, and it just looks like a bad-luck fall.

I was at the game Saturday in fantastic seats in the Reds (won 'em) and you realize how quickly everything happens, and how fast everyone has to think. When we're at home and we see replay after replay, everything slowed down, it's no wonder that people always assume that there is malice intended the majority of the time.

As far as I'm concerned, players have to think on their feet, deal with their own emotions, deal with the pressures of fans, media, etc, and accidents and incidents are going to happen. People sit in their thrones and loudly disparage players for not playing with intensity or heart, and then when a player's intensity leads him into trouble, those same throne-sitters instantly become the Moral Monarchy.

Please, enough with the moral finger-pointing. Laps, Ovie, Downie... save it for the REAL cheap-shots. Otherwise, it's just more boy-who-cried-wolf hot air.

I don't think they meant he isn't getting suspended for the hit,  he wont be suspended for 3 game misconducts because of the time frame,  and they are different infractions.

If Ovie gets anything less than 5 games this league is a joke.  Lapps got 5 and it was a very similar play.

But as we see on a regular basis Colin Campbell is an absolute joke and has a lot to do with the players not respecting each other.  Ovie should have already been suspended longer for his knee on knee hit.

Matt_in_TO's picture
That article is poorly written. I think it means Ovie isn't getting an automatic suspension due to the game misconduct. I'm sure he's still going to have a hearing with Colin Campbell. Max's hit was similar and there was no penalty on the play yet he still ended up with the 4 game suspension. - Member of Team Price

Bryan's picture

I'll still be VERY surprised if Ovechkin gets anything for this.

Matt_in_TO's picture

It's going to be very hard for Campbell to not suspend him.  He's a repeat offender and that was on the same level of a hit that warrented a 4 game suspenion.  In fact I think this is worse as Campbell is gone for the rest of the season.  Mind you Cooke got nothing so who the hell knows.  I'm starting to think that it's really Harvey Dent that dishes out justice in the NHL with a flip of a coin.

crabvader's picture

The excuse given for not suspening Cooke is a load of crap; Campbell just doesn't want to admit they royally f'd up by not suspending Richards when he almost ended David Booth's season or potentially his career.

I couldn't agree more. The National Hockey League needs to address this issue because it is hurting the sport on so many levels. What are the kids supposed to think when their idol Ovechkin gets away with a hit like that...

with markov in the lineup we are now w:20 l:11 o:3
say what you want about him, but this guy helps the team and is a huge part of thier success. i see no reason why he shouldn't be captain

andrewberkshire's picture
I really wish people would admit they were wrong about Markov during the whole bashing phase during the olympics. The guy is all heart on the Habs.

I was one of those leading the "bashing phase"

each post I tried to say that markov is a world class player - his talent is not in question.

many people- including myself - were DISAPPOINTED - not BASHING. there's a huge difference.

nothing would make me happier than for the habs to have a captain, and since markov is their best player, most seniority, and obviously a huge factor in every win or loss, he should be the guy named.

I never "bashed" him - I questioned his judgement, his priorities, and his loyalty to the habs fans vs his loyalty to Russia.

I still do ask these questions - and I'm not alone - many broadcasters and experts who follow the habs at ice level, go to every practice, agreed with this position.

I don't want to go back in time - I want markov to succeed and for the habs tro win the cup - we're all on the same side;  however, we lost 2 HUGE games to the Flyers before the break - 4 huge points - and a split of those 2 games would give us 2 more points and them 2 less, so we'd be 4 points ahead of the flyers instead of tied with them.

but ask yourself why is it that Markov has NOT been named the captain - especially since he's such an obvious choice??

I think that's a tough one to answer.

i did, i picked Markov :) also he is the longest serving hab, and he took a discount to stay here.

OV8 is in line to get 4 games (s/b more for repeat offender), anything less and the NHL continues to demonstrate player bias and is borderline WWE status. -- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --

Well... It doesn't look like NHL really care what fans think anyway so I say OV will get 1 game max.

That was 100% intentional.  If you want it Downie originally goes to slew foot Crosby and it went ended up taking out both of his legs.  He should be suspended big time for that.  But Colin Campbell is just as much of a Goof as Downie

Im suprised no one has mentioned that downie was responding to the hit on stamkos in the corner on the rush prior.

Hard to tell if that was on purpose, but his reputation doesn't help him, and that bent really weirdly, that's gotta hurt.

Downie is such a puke. Apparently his 30 game suspension as a rookie didn't teach him anything, go for 40 this time.

Not really. Those two almost paralyzed their victims on more than one occasion.

crabvader's picture
He shouldn't even be playing hockey. Sure, he's got some talent but he's a scumbag.

... on the other hand it will be interesting to see what punishment Downie gets as opposed say to ... Ovechkin.

let me guess... he is going to say that he didn't mean to hurt him, that it is unfortunate and that he is really sorry. Honestly, I can;t say for certain whether this was intentional or not though.

G-Man's picture

Downie deserves whatever he gets, whether it's another goon taking him out or Crosby himself breaking his stick over his face. Downie's a s*** player getting away with all kinds of scumbag play.

ooder's picture
i just have no idea what he was trying to do. crosby didn't have the puck anymore, and maybe downie was just trying to rough him up a little. anyways he was stupid to stick his knee right under crosby and then fall and squish crosby's leg in half
------------------
“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

Absolutely disgusting...

If the playoffs started today we'd play the Pens, and considering their recent playoffs successes, I really don't want to play them. Before the deadline I would have said NJ was the best choice, considering we've done much better against them then previous years. But with Kovy in town, I'd prefer avoiding playing a team with Kovalchuk, Parise and Brodeur. I think our best chances in the first round lie in playing Buf or Wsh. One team is all offense and the other is all goaltending, neither is very well balanced. Still, I'd be happy to just be playing in the post season after the crazy season we've had.

Canadiens' Magic Number Sits At 8.........Not including today's games, if the Habs were to play .500 hockey and win 6 of 12 remaining games.......Rangers would need to win 12 of 15 to catch Montreal, Panthers, Thrashers and Lightning would need to win 12 of 14 to catch the Habs and the Hurricanes would need to win all 14 of their games to equal the Canadiens. Big Ted's picture
Lapierre got 4 for a similar hit, but there are two differences. One, as noted by others, is that Ovechkin is a repeat offender. Two is that Lapierre was at least clearing a player from the front of the net who had a chance to score. His hit was made as a hockey play. Ovechkin had no real reason to make his hit. For those reasons, he should in theory get a heavier suspension (at least 5 games). It's a sad state that we know he won't get more than 4. It's also sad that the games he misses are against teams chasing us in the standings.

saskhab's picture
You also have to factor in this: Lapierre wasn't penalized. Ovechkin got a game misconduct. So if he got 4 games, he'd be more penalized for his actions than Lapierre was. If he gets 3 games, he more or less got the same punishment as Lapierre, especially when you consider Washington had to play a roster spot short the rest of the game and had to kill of a 5 minute major.

dufour's picture
I haven't seen the hit yet, but for my pool's sake, I hope he doesn't get suspended. "How would you like a job where when you made a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?" Jacques Plante

Thurston's picture
I'd be surprised if Ovechkin got four games. There's one rule for the stars, another rule for the Lapierre's of the world.

Jbird's picture
Good points. But when I look at both plays back to back #8 push/hit was from far more the players side than #40's was - Lapps really pushed the opposing player from behind Ovey did not. My guess is #8 gets less than 4 for that reason.

wotever's picture
I think they were both making hockey plays, Ovie was a bit more to the side, but he is a repeat offender. Since NBC isn't showing the Caps next week, Washington is only fighting for position not the playoffs, I think they're almost free to give him a fair decision. ObTopic: we gotta keep playing. I wasn't paying as much attention, but I was a little concerned the Caps came back to tie it up -- I was hoping they would collapse without Ovie.

Jbird's picture
I hear ya about the comparisons. Offtopic: when Ovey was out early in the year the team won all 5 games or something of that nature. Still, they need to play D if they are ever going to win the cup + Goaltending.

diehardhab's picture
I lapierre gets 4 for his hit, then ovi should get the same 4 games if not more. Dont forget ovi is a repeat offender, but again this is the nhl so who knows? The torch be yours to hold it high!

What exactly is the bad news?

I_SAY_FIGHT's picture
maybe this "The ninth-place New York Rangers beat sixth-place Philadelphia and that moved the Rangers to within five points of the Canadiens going into Tuesday's game" if they keep winning and the habs do not then its trouble... i actually thought it would be worse, like an injury but its mild bad news

wotever's picture
If it wasn't for the string of dub's we'd be a little more concerned about teams behind us coming up. A couple of bad games and we could be cursing Philly for losing this one.

I'd almost rather we protected, rested and healed key players if it were possible to do so securely.

Harani's picture
I thought about that too but at the same time, the Rangers give us optimism that we could catch the Flyers. So, in a way it does make me happy!

Jbird's picture
Its the best case scenario for todays games. I don't want the Habs in 7th place!!

joeybarrie's picture
I think we are looking pretty good. I don't know if I want to see New Jersey in the Playoffs. I know I don't want to see The Caps. But then again maybe Ovechkin will be suspended for the rest of the season for his hit today. Oh wait, I forgot, its Ovechkin and this is the NHL... He will probably get a bonus for his trouble, and feeling kinda bad about the hit. There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey...
