check out this interview with torts (it is not a spoof, i promise). can you imagine JM talking like that??

By Steve Zipay

Newsday, Melville, N.Y.

Mar. 19--Last offseason, one of the primary needs identified by Rangers management was a No. 1 center, especially after Scott Gomez was traded to the Canadiens and right wing Marian Gaborik was signed. The void hasn't been filled, even with the acquisition of Olli Jokinen from Calgary on Feb. 2.

"We're struggling up the middle," coach John Tortorella said Thursday. "I don't think Jokinen's played well . . . I don't think he's played hard enough, either."

Vinny Prospal and Brandon Dubinsky played on the wing last night, and Chris Drury, primarily a center, was on right wing.

The top two centers were Erik Christensen and rookie Artem Anisimov.

Jokinen, who has two goals in 14 games, centered the third line.

Dubinsky was paired with Gaborik and Christensen. "I'm not putting him [Dubinsky] back in the middle," Tortorella said.

"At this point in time, I think he's a better wing for our team. Erik Christensen sees the ice better."

Tortorella also separated Prospal and Gaborik, although they have been the team's most productive pairing. Said Tortorella, "They stink right now together. Vinny, his effort is always there, but he couldn't make a 10-foot pass the last game. That's the way he gets sometimes."

Its great no more Price Halak wars. We are rolling and going with the hot hand. No more switching, let Halak get his shot this year and see how it plays out in the offseason. Love this team lately, showing heart and confidence, something last year's team didn't have

You see? Big debate I'm havin with a few folks at once.

The picture for Bally's avatar ONLY works if it's a leaf in net. When it's not a leaf; it's not funny. Now it's funny. It's funny cuz it's true. That's what makes it funny. Why settle for LESS funny with ANY other shlub THAN a leaf? There's "leaf-funny" and then, there's "not-as-funny-as-'leaf-funny' funny". So why take another funny than funny? You can't, cuz then it's not as funny as it's SUPPOSED to be. And that's: leaf funny. So THIS is funny.

Dontcha think?

Nice to see RetroMikey finally on the bandwagon. I actua;;y don't believe he was as down on the team as he let on. It's more fun to be pleasantly surprised than to be dissapointed.

I was wrong about a lot of things, but I liked what Gainey did last summer. It took balls....and nobody has bigger ones than BG. When he saw we needed more, he went out and got Pouliot & Moore (don't think Moore was Gauthier's idea).

There are a handful of us who have believed in this team all along, and for that...I salute you. We still haven't won anything, and we may not just yet. Add a couple kids from the farm and maybe a tweak or 2, and our future looks real good.

Then this "you can't win by free-agency & trades" thing can be put to rest. The key pieces remain Gionta, Cammalleri and Gomez.

Go Habs Go!!

Funny reading the comment section of the Bruins fans after the game tonight. THey sound very very frustrated with the group of players on their team.

Wisznewski's hit on Seabrook.....i just saw it for the 1st time.....my opinion.....SICKENING.Absolutely SICKENING.Luckily Seabrook seemed to be ok but .....good god.....SICKENING.

OK whos got an issue with Laps getting 4 games for virtually the same dirty push into the boards as Ovi's dirty little push?He gets 2?OMG.....unreal....Campbell:Get it right!!!!!No star player preferential treatment should be used.

Just think guys.....we are playing really good hockey at the right time of the year and plus we get to add a top tier player in a short period of time in the form of Camalerri.

It does scare me however to tinker with a winning formula and say adding MA Bergeron into the lineup when he gets healthy.....I'd be hesitant to insert him into the lineup....Cammy is a given .....But boyyyy i like this team.We will go deep into the playoffs.I feel it.

I predict finishing in front of Ottawa and a super tight race between Montreal and Buffalo for the division title.

I predict a birth in the Finals vs Vancouver.Thats what my crystal ball tells me.

Iceberg84's picture

I'm going to make a bold prediction here and say that Montreal will finish in 7th in the Eastern Conference and face New Jersey in the first round for the post season matchup that Habs fans have feared/secretely desired for the last 18 years to break Martin Brodeur's evil spell over this team once and for all.

Bugs's picture

What kinda bold prediction is that? That ain't bold; it's meek as hell.

You want bold? Here's bold: The Boys will finish THIRD in the Conference.

How do you like THAT for bold?

...bold, he says...7th place...pff.

So really what you're saying is I should have used a different adjective. NOTED! I'm gonna go have a cry and eat some chocolate in the meantime.

Seriously though, I don't think a NJ - MTL is set in stone, there are a lot of different ways this could play out including Montreal tanking through the last 11 and missing they playoffs. It may not be bold as in absurd bold, but it's still something for which there are no guarantees. It was more my way of saying, hey wouldn't it be awesome to play against New Jersey and kick the *** of the goaltender who's been giving us grief for nearly two decades?

Bugs's picture

Well, you tell me, was your prediction "bold" or wasn't it? Finishing 7th sounded "reasonably regular" to me whether we played the Devils or the Chinese faction of the Red Army.

Thing about Brodeur is, it doesn't matter who we field (or ice, or whatever), doesn't matter what team we have, what mojo we're ridin; it's always ever have to do with Brodeur himself. Brodeur decides.

I think we can beat'em too. And it sure would be nice. But if Brodeur decides that's not gonna happen...

It's the only reason I fear ANY team in the East. It's if they have Brodeur.

WOW! Coyotes win their 7th straight to improve their record to 44-22-5. 3 points away from leading the Western Conference. And I thought that the whole summer dilemma would be a distraction to this team. I expected them to tank this year and get Taylor Hall. Wow, NHL is really something.

On the side note... Sharks and Senators...really choking right now. The playoffs didn't even start yet!

SeriousFan09's picture

I have a feeling their lack of playoff experience is going to hurt them, much like the Kings are going to likely suffer trouble in that area. It's going to be Wild Card playoffs across the board generally though, every team's got a glaring weakness going in.

Campbell's interview with Mike Milbury is further proof that his rulings are arbitrary and the league needs to come up with a better system of assessing suspensions.

Harani's picture

On a side note, any else notice the steady improvement in Ryan O'Byrne lately. Much more smarter plays, confidence. I was going to class sometime this week and there was an interview on Team 990 with O'B where he said the reason behind his confidence is Perry Pearn who really know how to deal with mistakes that you may make and sits down with you to go through video and that has helped him a lot. Playing with Markov definitely helps as well but you need to do your part and O'B been doing just in the past few games. Hope eh continues to develop strong and become a very reliable D for a long time.

"I gotta a feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night!"

i hope so too, hes a good guy, maybe hes done some silly things in the past, but you cant help but route for him.

The "real" O'Byrne/purse story never came out. O'Byrne actually covered for a couple of players that had created the trouble. I believe the purse may have contained a cell phone with compromising photos. My information source is from a journalist on the beat. So O'Byrne absorbed a lot of ridicule for covering for teammates.

ProHabs's picture

Exactly, I mean honestly who amoungst us hasn't ran out of a bar before with a lady's purse. O'Byrne Baby O'Byrne.

For those who think fighting means anything in terms of momentum or strategy in hockey, please see the Boston-Pittsburgh game tonight. In the rematch after the game in which Boston's franchise player is annihilated by a cheap shot from a Pittsburgh fringe player, Boston tough-guy Thornton goes out and immediately drops them with Cooke, the cheap shot artist in question. He does a pretty good job of pummelling him too. According to Cherry and those who think like him, this should fire up his team. Instead, they put on a listless performance and lose.

The fact that cheap shots are so prevalent in the NHL shows you that fighting is not a deterrent. The Bruins' performance tonight shows you that it also is not a motivator. It is one thing and one thing only: an entertaining sideshow for people who get bored by actual hockey playing.

...'fighting' is an important outlet and an essential part of North American hockey ...that is a distinction from no-purpose/goon fighting, which I term 'gorilla hockey' ...and 2 players genuinely settling accounts overlooked by the referees

...it's the Gorilla Hockey We have to eliminate, including it's type of players ...not rugged but fair North American hockey

Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=423049

oshawahabsfan's picture

People who go to games to see a fight don't have a clue what the game is about. Fighting is so useless, now more than ever. Think we'll ever see a useless goon in the hall of fame? Don't think so. The best hockey which takes place every four years with the Olympics, and every year with the World Juniors doesn't feature fighting. What does that tell you....

oshawahabsfan's picture

I will further add to that, there is no such thing as momentum. It's some word likely started by a hockey commentator to add some kind of science to one team playing better than the other a some point of a hockey game. It's ridiculous the amount of times this is cited during a hockey broadcast. One team outplays the other at all points of the match, there's no mystical spirit behind it derived from a bodycheck, a fight, or a save.

Komihater's picture

No momentum?? youve obviously never played the game.

Aybara's picture

That's simply incorrect.. There is definitely momentum... Play any sport competitively and you can feel it for yourself.

oshawahabsfan's picture

All you feel is physical or mental fatigue which leads to mistakes, which leads to the other team having the puck and controlling the play. There's no mystical momentum about it. I've played for quite a long time at many different levels, but thanks for coming out guys :)

Aybara's picture

DoubPst my bad

I don't know if you've ever played the game, but there is definitely such a thing as momentum.

Boston gave up after the olympic break. Thomas is the new Huet. And the Savard incident just put the last nail in the coffin.

Pittsburgh probably offered Cooke as an offering to the Hockey Gods in order to show that there is "honor". Thornton did what he did for Savard and the team. But this team packed it in.

If anyone ever thought that players don't mail it in, Boston is a prime example.

2 picks in the top 10 is their new motto.

Smells like 93 to me......

In Guy Boucher I trust.
