Noise/Bruit: Hamrlik in awe of Montreal

posted by Kevin Mio at 7h14 EST on Mar 17

In today's Journal de Montréal, Marc de Foy writes that Canadiens defenceman Roman Hamrlik is in paradise playing in Montreal. While he is surprised by his team's performance this season, Hamrlik is even more impressed with the fans that have the Bell Centre rocking on a nightly basis. As the article says, he hasn't seen anything yet. Wait until the playoffs.

Francois Gagnon of La Presse writes that Alex Kovalev could shatter some long-standing Canadiens records this season if he continues to put up points on the power play. With 16 goals and 26 assists with the man advantage, Kovalev is within four goals of Yvan Cournoyer's record of 20 set in 1966-67. Kovalev is also eight points shy of Mats Naslund's points record set in 1985-86 when he had 19 goals and 31 assists on the power play.

Here's a look at the top 20 prospects within the Canadiens' organization courtesy of Hockey's Future.

We're happy to have Roman Hamrlik as a member of our Habs. You've made great contributions thus far but I believe the best of Montreal is yet to come.

19. (15) Pavel Valentenko, D, 20 Acquired: 5th round, 139th overall, 2006 The young Russian blueliner’s first season in Hamilton is going roughly, but in a good way. “I’d probably say he’s one of the most hated players in the AHL,” Timmins laughed. “He wants to make a big hit every time he’s on the ice. He wants not just to hit you, but to hurt you.” Despite his aggressive play, with only 39 PIMs in 45 games, he’s not dirty. And at 6’2, 220 pounds, Valentenko’s got the size to make a few dents in people. Coming over to North America has been beneficial for his development. “He’s made a commitment to us – he could be getting a lot more money in Russia, but he’s here and it's paying off,” Timmins said. “He’s a character player.” Beyond the big hit, Valentenko’s also got the big shot, recently winning the AHL’s hardest shot competition with a 102.7 mph blast – and while that booming cannon isn’t translating into goals, he is creating scoring chances, evidenced by his 12 assists. “He really learns quickly and we’re just taking his development day by day,” Timmins added. “By Christmas he was the player who had improved the most according to his coaches. At the start of the season he was taking too many risks to make the big hit,” he said. “We need him to be reliable every night to play in the NHL as a call-up.” Now someone tell me how in the Hell this kid dropped four places in the rankings???

coutNY's picture
Defensive big hitters that don't "light the lamp" usually don't get thrusted in the spotlight. I think he was looked at as dominate on the russia Junior and scouts expected him to have that same impact in the AHL, but as we all know their is a transition time required for most coming from the juniors. Adding size is a major plus I think when he came over he was only 200 lbs. Hopefully he'll see some time next year. Now that we have a surplus of Defensive prospects, we need to find ourselves some big forwards. Rankings don't mean much when your on the ice you still have to prove yourself.

Maybe you have to look at at the other way, 'great to see 4 guys move up in the rankings'!

Nice to know that when Brisebois retires (hopefully with his dignity, if some of us lay off the guy), Valentenko and others will be around to take his place. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat

Here is this weeks stats where we place in a 30 team league. GA--200 we are now in 13th place, better than 17th place last week. Points--89 tied in 4th place with Pittsburg & Dallas same as last week. GF--230 alone in 1st place this week. Very nice little move this week into the top half of the league with our goals against. A good sign for the defensive side of our game, maybe peaking at the right time of year.

Ian, Just a quick correction, we are actually in second in the Goals for catagory. Ottawa has 231 we have 230. The tank is full, now let's map the route for the drive to 25!!

Ian G Cobb's picture
Your quite correct, my error.

RDS is reporting that Halak will get the start against the blues Tomorrow The tank is full, now let's map the route for the drive to 25!!

HOLY CRAP Rough translation from RDS: "If he'd agreed to waive his no-trade clause, centre Mats Sundin of the Leafs would be a Montreal Canadien today. "According to the Toronto Sun, the Swede would have been traded on deadline day in exchange for Higgins and a first, second and third-round pick." Apparently, if Kaberle had waived as well, he'd have been off to Philly in exchange for Jeff Carter and a first-round pick. Fletcher seems to realize he needs to clear out the dusty vets and replenish his supply of draft picks. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat

WindsorHab-10's picture
Thank you Sundin for not waving your no trade clause. That would've been a crazy price to pay for a has been.

Ian G Cobb's picture
The Toronto Sun is really PIE in the sky. Not HOLY CRAP IT"S BULL CRAP.

Hoegarden's picture
As soon as you read "according to the Toronto Sun", you should move on to the next item on the agenda. Anything to sell papers. If Bob Gainey ever admits to that possible trade, he'll go down a notch or two as far as being a smart DG.

Shiloh's picture
We have been stockpiling good players and draft picks. Sundin would have made a great Hab. I'm not saying I would have made the trade, only that an argument could be made for it.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
and we would have been shafted with his injury.... thank God we didn't land Sundin --------- 1. WE ARE DEAD MEAT WITHOUT OUR OWN POLICING 1. Feb 19, 2008 - History was made. 2. Thank GOD we have Alex Kovalev.....at his PRIME 3. The BELL CENTRE should be rebuilt to sit 80,000 fans 4. We will win the CUP

Halak gets the next start.

Here's another reason why we should be thankful that George Gillett owns the Habs (and, in particular, not Mark Cuban): http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/031108dnspomavsa... And in a related story, a nice shout out to HI/O: http://mirtle.blogspot.com/

Each day at my site I do a rundown of links for the day, both official languages, everything pertaining to the Habs. Check it out. http://wwwrealitycheckeyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008/03/habs-for-break...

Also off topic; comments from Simon on Pronger and interesting comments from bloggers following article. http://www.startribune.com/sports/wild/16731681.html

Habhopeful's picture
Wow, just a little off topic but has anyone noticed boullion's plus 8 so far this year?? "If I wanted to hear from an ass, I would fart..."

Maffu's picture
+8 is amazing and the team as a whole is playing better defensively this year and Bouillon is pulling his weight. He plays extremely well on the PK with Hammer when Komi is in the box and Gorges is also doing a great part. He continue's to throw huge hits as well, the team will need that in the playoffs and I hope he continues SMASHING people.

Ian Cobb's picture
Great stuff on your links Kevin. thanks

Yeah respect for Habsworld! Great site! I am les_glorieux on there :D

A quick look at the BOTTOM of plus/minus stats in the league: Radek Bonk -26 Daniel Briere -25

cautiousoptimist's picture
Whoah - wouldn't have thought. Wasn't Bonk in fire in the beginning of the season? The stat is all the more brutal because Bonk's Predators have scored 210 times this year and allowed just 209, making them a +1 as a team. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat

Maffu's picture
WOW. That's incredible and makes Gainey a King. However, we know Bonk would not be -26 if he was still here.

showey47's picture
bonk also only has 1 goal in his last 35 games or so.

Wild Flower, if you're out there this morning. Just read your post of last night on why Ottawa would trade Corvo. This morning's Ottawa Citizen has an article on him. quote When he was traded on Feb 11th, he didn't exactly leave on cordial terms. He asked Murray for a trade. He was not very happy in "small-town attitude" Ottawa for every mistake he made, it was all over the papers, "ridiculous" scrutiny. unquote Imagine him in Montréal ??

Thanks. On the surface he looks good, but I don't know what was going on behinde the scenes. Maybe he is the type of guy who would have one great game against his former team, just to show them up, followed by many more lousy ones.

During one media scrum in Ottawa, the poor guy almost broke down and cried amidst all the heat. No, I don't think he could handle the Breezer treatment in Montreal!

The Teacher's picture
I love it. Hamrlik is seeing what Montreal REALLY offers. He does pay the high tax dollars for a reason! I prefer it to think of it as a luxury tax for the luxury of having the best hockey fans in the NHL. I'd love to hear how he feels about the snow ;) "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?" "Four blind mice, Four blind mice, see how they suck?"

wd40's picture
"..luxury tax for the luxury of having the best hockey fans in the NHL" good one. you bet! although Saturday arguably wasn't the most exciting game of the year, the crowd was rockin' and they got a 1:30 standing ovation to end the game. _______________________ make your opinion count @ http://hiopolls.blogspot.com

but whats hockey without snow! its an advantage...puts you in the mindset. --------- 1.

I must admit during last years off season I was amazed at the size of the contract the Hamrlik received...best money the Habs spent in a long time.

Jay in PA's picture
You weren't the only one. I recall someone here posted a link to a major sports site describing the contract we gave him as absurd. I'd like to find the dude now and say, "So, are you earning your money?"

coutNY's picture
It's nice that Hamrlik bucked the trend of shunning Habs offers at deadline. Although, he did get a surprising payday, but well worth every penny this year. I also heard few comments on our western road trip how much more physical Hammer played than with his stint with Calgary west coast. Great to have him at his best....GO HABS GO

Maffu's picture
It's great for everyone, and Hamrlik will surely bring his game to another level in the playoffs. Don't think we've seen the best of Hamrlik just yet.

J.T.'s picture
Since we're linking to other sites here, check out this one: http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/sports/scn-sa-pacioretty3mar16,0,537117.... It's a nice look at Habs first-rounder Max Pacioretty, as his college team tried to win the national U.S. college championship. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

Bill H's picture
"It is unbelievable here," Pacioretty raved. "I've seen a couple college games growing up, but nothing like this. Every night at home games the place is packed and it's so wild. It's so fun to play in this atmosphere." If he thinks its wild at home games with the Wolverines, just wait til he gets to Montreal.

We have probably one of the best fan/crowds in the world but don't look down upon U of Michigan fans (students and alumni), they are pretty wild when it comes to supporting their teams (you should see a football game there at -10 temp with 105 thousand packed in the open air stadium). I know first hand because my wife is an alumni of U of M. ;-) Ali B.

Excellent article. Thanks J.T. The kid seems to know what he wants and is sure going about it the right way. With good'ol Red Berenson, he's in good hands.
