Setting the table for the Senators

posted by Dave Stubbs at 5h36 EST on Apr 1

A little reading to prepare you for tonight's game in Ottawa:

Red Fisher on the stern stuff of which Saku Koivu is made;
Dave Stubbs on the mood in the Canadiens dressing room, and Carbo's plea to the media;
Pat Hickey on the Senators, and on the test ahead for the Habs' depth;
Herb Zurkowsky on a bad break, Steve Bégin and playing with pain.
Mike Boone: Anyone else nervous?
Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail on something amiss in Ottawa
Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen on the Senators' unlikely playoff push

For those delusional fans who think tonight's game will be a cakewalk, think again. I fell into the trap thinking that the Sens were in a terrible slump. The facts are that in the last ten games the Sens record is 5-4-1 and the Habs is 6-3-1. The Habs will have to bring their A game to have a chance of winning. Time to prove that the Habs and Carbo are deserving of the praise, and are legitimate playoff contenders.

sakus a warrior, if he can manage to get his foot into a skate, im sure he'll freeze the foot and be out there come game one of the playoffs.komis and strait are huge parts of our puzzle too, hope they're ready to go also.im still against this one point each end of o.t.,should be 2 pts for who ever wins the game, thats it, weather its in regulation, o.t or shootout and other team gets zero for a loss. mend saku,komi,strait,frankie, mend !!

With some of the Media fools here, it's no wonder this team has problems signing players. They need to chill out!
I really hope the players rally for Koivu. His heart and spirit is as big as the game itself.

Darn tootin. I've said this before, but it anyone can find me a picture of Brisebois hoisting the Cup from '93, I'll make it my avatar. Give the man a bit of respect!

www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat

I cannot believe that there is no suspension to Sen's Neil for his head shot on the Bruin's Reich. GM Murray must have a mark on somebody in the NHL discipline office or headquarters and it may be a tape of a call to Maison du L'Amour.

It seems like both teams are expereincing difficult times... at least the Habs aren't lacking in the confidence department.

Does anyone think Murray's meddling with a successful team, in his pursuit to build a team to compete with Anahiem and also on a egotistically level, one baring his own distinct signature has disrupted the chemistry that of which made it successful to begin with?

Maybe his humor can land him a stand-up gig if his project does not take them past the 1st round of the playoffs???

Hopefully the rule regarding the disclosure of injuries will be applied uniformly across the league. Shanahan was injured last night. According to the Rangers, he suffered a "lower body muscle-type of injury". Blech.

My ultimate wish for the canadiens is to win a cup for Saku. He has been on awful teams. He is the one that took Ryder and Higgins under his wing when they first came up. He has never played with superstars except Kovalev for 2 months. He has never complained through the bone headed controversies surrounding the team. He has chosen to stay here when everyone else went to other teams. That includes the cancer and injuries suffered throughout his career.

To the Montreal Canadiens players... If you don't win it for the fans... Win it for Saku. He deserves a cup ring...

Am I the only one who is outraged? Media jackals calling players on their cell phones.... calling their hotel rooms? In any other context, would this not be considered stalking? Present company excepted, Dave, I find this type of behaviour to be juvenile at the very least and distracting and harmful at worst. I think that Carbonneau is showing an almost superhuman restraint in his response and those who continue to abuse their access privileges should be relegated to covering such breaking news as changes to the leash laws.

A great collection of articles.

Note that both Red Fisher and Mike Boone essentially tell the Koivu bashers to put a sock in it. Bravo - and to those of you who fall into that category, take the hint. These guys are in much better positions than the rest of us who do anything other than work in hockey to see what Koivu brings, on the ice and in the dressing room, and to see the impact of his leadership.

Having said that, I do disagree with Red when he says that the biggest reason for Les Boys success this year is the lack of injuries. I think it is unexpected improvement from Carbo, Kovy, Plekanecs and the young players, so basically improvement from top to bottom.

Which is why I believe that while Koivu is a key element to the team, I disagree that his absence means we are seriously compromised in the playoffs. We are for sure a better team with Koivu in the line up, but this team has depth.

Slam some vodka, Mike, and be easy. The Cossacks will be kept at bay!
