Habs crowned Eastern Conference champs

posted by Dave Stubbs at 17h31 EST on Apr 6

The Canadiens this afternoon were crowned champions of the NHL's Eastern Conference, without even lacing up their skates.

The Habs claim No. 1 overall in the conference thanks to Philadelphia's 2-0 home-ice victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, who chose to rest superstar Sidney Crosby in advance of the playoffs.

Montreal finishes the regular season with 104 points, two more than the Penguins. The Flyers' win has them vault over No. 7 Boston, pushing the Bruins into eighth and a first-round playoff date with the Canadiens.

According to this article, the Habs and Ruins will also be broadcast in Mandarin! WHOA http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/080406/canada/hockey_playoff_matchups

Did I hear it right today? Mick McGeough won't be doing any playoffs games? I think I heard it out of the corner of my ear during the pittsburgh game earlier today. Can't say for sure though what they said.

Timo: Tell me the same thing about Fraser and i'm gonna get happier than I deserve to be. GO HABS.

Y's picture
That's what they said on TSN. He'll be travelling around with Schick (sp?) and acting as a mentor to the younger guys reffing the playoffs.

either that or it was your deepest darkest desires talking to you. hopefully its true!

has anyone else been as excited as me all day??? I've been as giddy as a school girl who knows shes going to be named prom queen.

It is safe to say that the editors of the hockey news, in all the glory of their spectacular foresight, were slightly off in their prediction that Montreal would finish 13th in the Eastern Conference ... Keep trying guys!

Definately. I've been telling everybody how THN were so wrong. They must feel stupid and humbled right now haha

G&M has an article in the sports section where they state that the Habs have the best chance of bringing the Cup back to Canada.

I love how Crosby decided to sit this one out. Did Kovy sit out the useless game against the Leafs? Did we start our backup to save Carey? Did we rest Higgens or Ryder? Our boys are not only faster and more skilled than any other team, were the toughest too!

Does anybody know a good website where I can pull good stats from for the playoffs pool? Stuff like points, goals, assists, injury status, etc... Just need a nicely compiled list of players already in playoffs for my playoffs draft tomorrow at work. THanks in advance.

Corporate's picture
Well nhl.com is pretty good for all stats and they update on the fly... cbssportsline is very good also... Hope this helps..

teamplayer's picture
do not use cbssportsline... guy last year in my pool use this and all the pt totals were wrong.. maybe hes just an idiot but i know everybody else in the pool isnt using that site. it was actually quite funny

Timo - be careful. Teams that enter the playoffs on a high note do not always perform well. Likewise, teams that stagger into the playoffs may surprise. In essence, it's all about goaltending and the powerplay. The Original 24 Cups

Well... of course. I am not about to pick spezza and heatly. Living in Calgary I think I will have a good chance of picking a few habs players (including Price, cause you know... it's 16 wins right there). I am not sure who I will go with in the west with. Leaning towards Sharks and perhaps Dallas who I think will surprise this year. I usually put all my eggs in one basket in playoffs so my draft picks are usually from only 2-3 teams. And despite Habs finishing on the high note and winning the conference, personally, I still regard them as the underdogs due to their youth and inexperience. I hope they don't feel the pressure of finishing first and play like they have nothing to lose.

24 Cups's picture
Timo - forget Dallas, it's not going to happen. The Original 24 Cups

Greg Stewart seems to have got himself a fan club here. Sure he showed some good things last night, though I thought his actions with McCabe were sort of dubious. Stewart bodychecked him at the end of the game while McCabe was already thinking of his post-season beer-drinking. It wasn't necessary at all. Imagine some punk called up by the Leafs doing that to a Hab in a similar situation. Stupid McCabe escalated the deal with some vicious stick work, but that does not change the fact that Stewart made an unnecessary and disrespectful hit. Not that it matters, but McCabe won the fight too. To be clear, I think McCabe is a jerk and a lousy player, but that is not the point. Does anybody actually want Stewart in the line-up against Boston? Do we sit Ryder for Stewart? If not, then who else? And don't say Gui. C'mon, get real. Nice game kid. I'm sure it was the thrill of a lifetime. But his season is now over, unless we get another bunch of injuries.

sidhu's picture
I don't think Stewart did anything improper with respect to the McCabe incident. He simply finished his check on McCabe. I would expect a rookie to play out each shift as if it really matters - I'd rather him finish his check than just skate away because the game and the Leafs' season are over. I don't think Stewart should be in the lineup over Ryder against Boston, but I do think he has a bright future and he showed that he can play with the big boys. As I said last night, I hope he gains a roster spot next season, maybe not as a starter but as a reserve forward who can step in on an as-needed basis. Go Habs Go!

RS i think you had better watch that fight all over stewart kicked mccabe's ass clearly no contest!

46_14_27's picture
McCabe has no class. I hope he's a Leaf forever. He fits in well with the whole organization. For so called veteren to act like that, especially against a rookie in his first game, is about as low as you could go. McCabe has no class. Period. 46-14-27 Best Line In Hockey !! The Cup in 3 years or less !! Halak / Price Rule

Come on RS. He barely gave McCabe a push. There was nothing to his "hit"... I would not sit any of our regulars in his favor just yet, but I would keep him around in case we do have injuries. Gives him a chance to practice with the team and get more comfortable around his teammates. Once again, nothing wrong with his "nastiness"... We need somebody who can do those kinds of things.

Bob McKenzie ALMOST payed us a compliment today when he said that a lot of people are doubters of the Canadiens because Price has no playoff experience, well that's true, but neither does Tim Thomas. So nice of TSN to take a second to somehow pay the #1 team in the EAST!!! a backhanded compliment. Note to TSN, CBC, Don Cherry, all of HNIC, and all the other doubters. We don't need you, or your sympathy or your vote of confidence. We'll see you at the Stanley Cup finals, when Koivu and Kovalev and the incredible Carey Price are carrying cup #25 over their heads. Let's see you say something bad then!

Like I said in the past... who cares what other networks or so called hockey "experts" say about us? Their bringing habs down is they way to compensate for yet another shameful year laffs have had. I am glad there is RDS and for folks who do not understand french enough trust me - they are on our side and say good things about hte Habs. Go HABS!!! Go RDS!!!

And who cares what you have to say about us, Sybil?

I heard we be eating Bear for four games and then move on to round two, yummi, lol. I hope that Stewart gets to stick around to go at Chara, that would be a sight to see....Ole Ole Ole....

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
Come on now. Just cuz the kid gets in a tussle doesn't mean he's given the title "knuckles". This kid isn't a fighter. What he does have are speed, good hockey sense and a nose for the net that creates chances. Stewart will end up in hospital if he tries to live up to the fight hype that some fans have bestowed on him. He is no match for Chara or Laracque or any other well-known heavy-weight. He barely held his own vs. McCabe!!!

sidhu's picture
Check out youtube, the kid can fight, although just because he can fight doesn't mean he can take on anyone. He is a middle-weight, he'll beat down guys like Avery, Carcillo, etc., not Laraque or Boogaard. For his first fight in the league, against an a-hole like McCabe, I thought he did just fine - he gave a few and took a few. More importantly, he didn't back down from the slash and spear. I respect that he said directly to McCabe, 'I don't take that, do you want to go?'

saw steward in a couple of ahl fights on you tube. hes slow at swinging his arms.reminds me of ryders buddy from nfld who used to hang on for dear life when he fought for the habs.his speed is a definite asset though.and his hitting is as well.prob see him in the playoffs.i can see him score a winning goal or two.yeahhhhhhhhhhh go habs...

Bill H's picture
I'm not so sure I would relish the thought of that match up. From his performance in the last game, he would be a welcome addition as he brings speed as well as physical play and can drop the gloves, but he is 6'2 200 lbs compared to Chara at 6'9 255 lbs. I don't think antagonizing Chara is a good idea. And I don't think Stewart has the experience or the size to take Chara.

oh we'll be agonizing chara allright.but mainly everyone will chip in for that.wooohoooo

24 Cups's picture
Bill H - Agreed. I loved Stewart's performance last night but if he dresses for a game then that will surely be a sign that we are in big trouble. Carbo will be going with the guys who brought him to the dance. The Original 24 Cups

Don't forget Barry Trotz of Nashville with the minimum salary cap used and the loss of so many star players.

and regained as soon as the other team loses at home.... what's your point?

Habhopeful's picture
Man was I really really impressed by Stewart on the llast game and i Hope he sticks around because he seems and played very high-tempo, energized hockey and he stuck out alot, he seems like he would be a good fit with maxim lapierre...HERE HERE TO THE HABS!!!!! "If I wanted to hear from an ass, I would fart..."

Did Habs send him down yet? I haven't heard anything. I hope they keep him around. If Saku not read to go for the first game I feel comfortable with the Stewart in the starting lineup.

Timo 1 game of NHL experience totaling 8-10 min and you want him to play in the playoffs? It was Le Dandy who hit him tape to tape twice on his outlets creating the opportunity. Playoffs means mistake free hockey, that is what is needed. It was a great night for the kid let him enjoy it.

The Teacher's picture
Holy frig, if we're up 3-0 in the series, I wanna see him in for another game. "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Only if we are hit with injuries again... that's all I am saying. Looks like Chips is hurt so if we exhaust seemigly infinite number of our defensemen who play forward, why not him? Maybe I am too optimistic :)

Seeing as it is such a wonderful time to be a Canadiens fan, I was wondering if any fans here would like to tell their story of how they became a Habs fan. I recently read one such story, and it inspired me to write my own and seek out those of others. If you have an interesting story to tell about what brought on you Canadiens allegiance, write it out and send it off. I will be posted at my site. How I Became A Habs Fan http://wwwrealitycheckeyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008/04/how-i-became-h...

In the late 1950's I liked Toronto - we listened to Foster Hewitt on the radio and then watched Hockey Night In Canada at 9:00 p.m. - after we got TV in 1957. I really liked Dick Duff who was a great rookie in 1959 or 1960. Then I saw Yvan Cournoyer in a game in the early 1960's- wow he was fast! My mother had always like Jean Beliveau (my Dad and older brother were Red Wing fans) and I started to like Big Jean as well. Then Duff was traded to the Habs and played on a line with Beliveau and Cournoyer. I was in high school at the time and now completely red, white and blue. As I attended university, Sam Pollock traded Ernie Hickey to the Oakland seals for their first draft choice (I think Oakland's GM was a former Habs employee). That pick turned into Guy Lafleur. In 1976, the Filthydelphia Flyers were going for three Stanley Cups in a row. They had some talent but won largely through intimidation - they would commit 20 infractions and get called for two. For Game 1 of the final series between the Habs and Flyers, Scotty Bowman started five tough guys, including Pierre Bouchard, Gilles Lupien and Rick Chartraw - a shocking group to take the opening face-off. The puck dropped, ten gloves dropped and five Flyers dropped - Habs won 4-straight. That was one of my all-time favourite moments.

1966, we would only get the second and third periods on TV, on a Saturday night growing up in the interior of BC. My father having grown up in Kirkland Lake Ontario used to tell me of some of the players he knew including Ralph Backstrom and Dick Duff. I guess I became interested and the rest is history. The first time I remember watching the Habs win the cup was in 1969, when Serge Savard won the Conn Smythe. The next won was when Ken Dryden stoned the Bruins in 71, the huge comeback on Holy Thursday ( unfortunately I was at mass!!), and defeating the Black Hawks with the Pocket Rocket leading the way. Then the 70's and the Road Runner in 1973, and the great four in a row, with my two favourites being the annihilation of the Broad Street Bullies (I too enjoyed the opening lineup) and The too many men on the ice. ( Cherry is still bitter). The unlikely wins in 1986 and 1993.

Just grew up a Habs fan because everyone else in the household were Habs fans I guess. When I first started skating in about 58-59 I use to wear #9 on my jersey... switched to number 22 in the mid to late 60s' and to 19 in the 70's. My guess is by the numbers you will know what kind of player means a lot and is important to me. Funny thing, because my son turned out to be the type of player That I always coveted, but in one package.... score goals, play maker, a hitting machine, loves scrapping if anyone dared. Unfortunately he is a die hard Sens fan who tries very hard to get me to convert... oh well! Sorry I don't have an exotic reason for becoming a Habs fan.... but thats it... I was born into and will die with a CH in my coffin... these instructions will be made clear. Can't wait to read other posters inputs. Enjoy the playoffs my dear fellow Habs fans... its been a while!

malkin got a diving penalty with 2 mins to go in the game. rather sums up the pens effort in that one!

It was rather one sided in terms of penalties in that game - philly were getting all of them. Pittsburg is probably league's new golden boys team that will be getting all the breaks from the refs all playoffs. Habs fans need to prepare themselves for some really one side and brutal officiating going the other way.

home ice through out the playoffs what a season way to go boys the silver cup is waiting at the end of the road ......now go grab it a bring it back home! 1st place in the conference 3rd overall in the whole league! sounds good we better get use to that because it is going to be a regular occurance! he has arrived.........jesus price and he will lead us to number 25! god is a habs fan, this is god's team! go! habs go! kovalev, plekanec kostitsyn! best line in the conference in bob we trust! thank-you mr.gainey for this team and the job your doing your the best! coach carbonneau your the best coach in the league thank-you for being an unbelievable coach! your the coach of the year and it is well deserved

As far as I'm concerned we are the #1 story in the NHL this year after all the networks and papers picked to finish not only out of the playoffs but far down in the standings. Then we have to listen to sportscasters going on about the top stories being the failures of the leafs, near collapse of the senators or the caps squeaking in. To heck with the lot of 'em ! There's nothing like being a Habs fan win or lose and only a Habs fan can understand that!

Carbo for the Jack Adams? Any doubters out there still? Now, I'm not going to go out of my way to embarrass any Carbo bashers by name...but I think a few, "gee was I wrong(s)" might be in order. All of last season we had to put up with marginally knowledgeable fans deriding Carbo's every move, nice to see the change in tunes! Broken record's kinda get to me. I think I can come back now, and enjoy the ride! Through the magic of RDS, I missed only one game all season. That was a first for me, and what a season it was to watch. And with the youth of this team, combined with solid stewardship, this could be a dynasty in the making. Anyone out there think BG is still going to have trouble attracting top flight talent to our team...I don't. Go Habs Go

Congrats HABS! Wicked end to a phenomenal season! Bring on the Bruins baby!

Way to go Habs. Thanks for a terrific regular season. Now on to the playoffs and lets pulverize those Bruins.

I am really looking forward to the playoffs this year. I thought Canadiens would be better than last year, but not this good. Now I can stick to all of the Sabres fans here in Rochester, NY. I am not looking forward to watching CBC playoff coverage on NHL Center Ice. Will someone tell me how Bob Cole is still on the air with all of the verbal gaffes he commits? I know he has been around a long time and is one of the last old HNIC guys, but come on. Best play-by-play guy ever: Dan Kelly. Unsung heroes: Josh Gorges and Sergei Kostitsyn. Just think how good this team will be next year...

Girth's picture
TSN turning point... Arrival of #74.

Bill H's picture
Actually, that is as good a date as any. Sergei's first game was on Dec 13. Up until then, the Canadiens were 14-11-5 for a winning percentage of 40%. After that date they were 33-14-5 for a winning percentage of 70.2%. From mediocrity to excellence. But I don't think TSN is suggesting that the change is all due to Sergei. There was a maturing of our defensive corps, especially O'Byrne and Gorges. And the whole team got better defensively. While the arrival of Sergei did seem to light a torch under brother Andrei's butt, our other lines began to contribute more to the scoring also. Ryder, for example, had 3 goals in 35 games up to that point.

very nice to win the conference (has it really been 19 years?!?) but the most impressive thing was what Price said about that. He said something like it would be nice but you know, they don't raise conference banners here, only Stanley Cup banners because that's the ultimate prize. So, well done boys. Now, bring it home.

King Price will be in his domain...high tempo, high pressure, high rewarding games . Can't feel any more confident than with the Team we have this year. So many positives, so many possibilities. I just can't wait for the puck to drop along with the Bruins. Habs4 -Bruins0 GO HABS GO!!!!

What a wonderful accomplishment for the whole organization and as a dedicated fan of Les Canadiens I can honestly say that they earned it and I simply love the way that this team has come together! Habs take Boston in 4 or 5! To all my Habs brothers and sisters : enjoy every minute of this team...they truly are a TEAM!

TSN, Don Cherry and the CBC really do love the Habs....it's analogous to a little boy picking and teasing a little girl that he likes. He'll poke her, call her names, make her cry and make it seem as though he hates her guts. But in reality he's got a crush and can't really express his feelings...and those feelings are understand once that little boy grows up and he understands what love is all about. So...all TSN, Cherry and The CBC need to do is GROW UP!!! Good luck Habs...we're all rootin' for ya!

Hmmm, no word of Stewart being sent down yet. Wonder if he'll stick around for a bit. He deserves to.

Congrats to the Montreal Canadiens. With no disrespect to our fine Habs I/O (media member) hosts, the so-called pundits/experts can suck on their so-called expert prognostications. The even weirder media issue is the total lack of giving the Habs any credit whatsoever. cbc/hnic last night and then dave hodge's gang of four this morning went out of their way to blacklist the Habs. It may be sacrilegious for Dave et al to comment but the hate on for the Montreal Canadiens is almost palpable.

Wayne's picture
I'd have to say that TSN's coverage of this Conference Championship by another Canadian team is perfunctory at best. I used to be on the fence when it came to this issue and was always reluctant to voice my opinion,.. and I won't. It's very simple and it's very complex... but, in the end, it's political.

linp's picture
That's why you want to be ahead so that you can have a chance to pick your opponent. Yesterday, Boston avoids the Caps. Today, Pitts avoids the Philly. I couldn't blame them. You want to have a better chance to win.
