Breezer: Game 1 tale of the tape

posted by Dave Stubbs at 7h02 EST on Apr 11

Because the Inside/Out debate yesterday was so spirited about coach Guy Carbonneau's decision to play veteran defenceman Patrice Brisebois in Game 1, here are Breezer's official stats from his 88th career NHL playoff game:

One assist, +1, 20:32 ice time (third-highest D behind Hamrlik and Markov); 24 shifts, 2 shots, 1 blocked shot, no giveaways, no takeaways

I never expected him to be a huge part of the team. All I thought of him as was a great insurance policy for a long season and the playoffs. Even though one D is on mend, and another is playing (likely) hurt, he has a role to fill and in this he has exceeded my expectations. Yes, Brisebois has his defensive liabilities... But he is still capable compared to a lot of other teams D men, and he has the added bonus of being able to quarterback a power play if need be. How many teams have a backup plan like 9 possible D men just in case? This is a versatile lineup.

I find Breezer contributed to our win yesterday. It was his shot on goal that led to our first goal. We all know that our team plays better when we score the first goal.

Breezer is ONE of the reasons the habs won, total team effort and he is part of the team...as for making his partner work 130%, give me a break, he was in there because he wouldn't make rookie mistakes, like taking stupid penalties in the first minute of the game and being tossed !!!!...come on man 130% !!!!!...LOLOLOL...

Well said (Amen!) TommyB. Seriously, thank God... otherwise, with the kind of 'moves' proposed (at times) on this site we would end up like the Leafs!? The horror... Go Habs!

slamtherimtim's picture
how many times did he let the puck out at the blue line when we had pocession

Actually, less than Streit has been letting by recently.

Cams Habs's picture
I counted one, but seriously, I hope you are not trying to knock him even after his great numbers last night. He was one of our best D-Men out there.

dont think hes changed , thats all im saying

I never have liked the Breezer. His lack of strength was never made up by his "offensive prowess." That play when he should have used his body to block Kovy's pass at the blue line was just another gaffe in an extraordinarily long list. However, we are playing the Bruins, not Pittsburgh or any other team with a strong offense, so keep him in so O'Byrne can watch Komi and learn something. Habs-professor is right: Hamrlik bailed the Breezer out time and again. Gilbert Remember '71? Remember '86? Now is the time to believe. The Drive for 25 Begins! Go Habs Go!

your right....he cannot play beyond the Bruins series...in fact once we go on the road to Boston then do you rest him? --------- 1. THIS IS WAR 1. We will win the CUP 2. The BELL CENTRE should be rebuilt to sit 80,000 fans 3. Beware of the T.R.S.

Drew42's picture
I don't know if any of you caught it but also that great hit that Hammer laid on Lucic(sp?) behind Price's net.... Well it was Breezer who lined the Bruin up perfectly for the hit to be had. So I say WAY TO GO BRISEBOIS! The team is winning, the guys all seem to be having fun, let them play and enjoy the ride. Go Habs Go!

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
Brezzer lined him up? it was Breezer that couldn't contain him!!!! until WHAM!..the Hammer arrived. --------- 1. THIS IS WAR 1. We will win the CUP 2. The BELL CENTRE should be rebuilt to sit 80,000 fans 3. Beware of the T.R.S.

It's always been my opinion that Habs I/O posters are good at doing just that....posting! As far as the makeup of the team, and who should play or sit on any given night, I'm glad some of these armchair posters are only that. This Habs team has played well all year long with a rotating squad of "extras", and they finished first place in the conference. There is not one player on this roster who should receive the kind of written abuse that Brisebois and a couple of others have received all year long. This entire team, Brisebois included, have stepped up and answered the bell this year. Sad, but even if the Habs go all the way and win the Cup there will still be those who will say..."yeah, but...."!

Amen to that! this TEAM is where it is because it has been a total team effort all year. Just because Ryder, Smokes, and Breezer aren't burning the back of the nets or checking a player through the boards; doesn't mean they don't contribute to the team. I think if some "fans" stopped watching for the mistakes of one or two Habs, and pay attention to how good the team plays, those "fans" would enjoy the game a little more. I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!! p.s. Smokes is burning the back of the net nowadays!!

Good for Breezer; he played a solid game last night, and has been a source of positivity all year long. I counted two Kovy giveaways last night; had it been Brisebois, a few on this site would be howling for blood.

At least he did now allow any breeze by last night. :)

he made a great play on the opening goal and he shows a very cool demeanor out there....almost too cool. that said there were several incidents those with keen sight would have picked up that could have been game changing against us. he made his defensive partner work at 130%, Hamrlik was SOLID and there to fill in the gaps that Breeze left, for example, pucks would be dumped in and Breeze instead of turning and bulleting for that puck would glance over at Hammer and he would have to skate back and touchup for the icing, Hammer gave a slight nod, tucked his chin in and hustled back so the "vet" didn't have to....in fact Breeze never put himself in a position where he would have to take a hit to secure the play, his release was very very quick, which is good most of the times but eventually it'll be like rolling the dice. I'd rather see ala Markov who went almost to the redline then circled back magically all the way behind his net because THERE WASN'T a play to make....can breeze do that? or would breeze do that? also the time he took the hit after the outlet pass what happened? he was almost injured by flying 15' into the boards. He still hasn't learned the magic of leverage for a defenseman, you do not check with your arms. As well would obryne have caught that bouncing puck on the Boston Breakaway?, why wasn't breeze anticipating more... anyway, thats the reality of what happened last night in regards to Breezes game and his errors....really not that bad and not bad enough to have him sit. I'd keep him in the lineup against Boston. He played a good safe game...the type of game that will work against the Bruins.... --------- 1. THIS IS WAR 1. We will win the CUP 2. The BELL CENTRE should be rebuilt to sit 80,000 fans 3. Beware of the T.R.S.

As long as he's paired with someone solid defensively, like Hamrlik rather than Streit, Brisebois will be fine. I didnt' think playign him was a great idea either, but with Bouillon out, I'm starting to see why Breezer's in and O'Byrne's out. Carbo wanted to field a cool, veteran, experienced team in Game 1, and it paid off in droves. Good call by the coach, bad call by me. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's speed: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Why wasn't Brisebois anticipating Kovalev making a bounce pass back to the point????? Are you serious???? Yeah someone else may have caught him but that was Kovy's bad all the way......maybe the dman (I think Hammer) could have knocked it down but it looked more like a Steve Nash pass than a hockey play. Brisebois got crushed.......good....that means he stood in there and made the play and took the hit for the team. It didn't hurt anyone but him so good for the Briser. you are right that he doesn't get low enoiugh on guys and doesn't seem to use leverage but I think it is just a lack of strength in some situations. O' Byrne who you mention right after that statement is far worse than Brisebois for not understanding leverage and arm hitting.....you know he has the strength. Eventually OB will get it and for now Briser played great. Briser was a great addition for the role he played and his value goes beyond his role as an extra defenseman...we just don't see that . P.S. Habs Prof I like your posts (even if I don't always agree) so please don't think I am picking on you because it seems the last couple days I have been debating with you quite a bit.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
no problem Krob, your one of the few you actually reply with constructive arguments without turning it into a childish 3 word exchange. debating is good when its backed up with examples and solutions...not just bashing a player and then getting bashed yourself for posting, thats happening on a lot of forums out there and it turns the forum into GARBAGE. there is alot of great reads on here...as there should be...times are good! --------- 1. THIS IS WAR 1. We will win the CUP 2. The BELL CENTRE should be rebuilt to sit 80,000 fans 3. Beware of the T.R.S.

Breezer stepped up big time. I'm glad to see him do so. I remember the 93 cup run so vividly. Breezer was a part of that never say die team. Happy to see him back, playing a more reliable and simple game. Hope he can keep up the good play and that he wins his 2nd cup.

kudos - he served his role very well last night.

Give the Guy his due he played Very well last night.

I hate to say this but, I told you so! I just hope some of the bloggers on this site would stop being SO NEGATIVE and stop insulting others (the coach, players and other bloggers) when a particular move is made - like playing Brisebois yesterday. There's no need for that. At the end of the day, Carbo deserves the benefit of the doubt and a little respect after what he, and the entire coaching staff, accomplished. Go Habs!

Although he does still make me nervous, we have to give credit where credit is due.

Bravo Brisebois! Old goats like you and Smolinski can still play and help our team! I have always believed you need veterans and youth on a team to succeed and we are seeing that. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Brisebois also played on the PP and the PK. He had no hits, but he did play well.
