Cowardly? You should talk, Carbo says of Flyers

posted by Dave Stubbs at 14h21 EST on Apr 27

From The Gazette's Herb Zurkowsky. Consider the flames fanned for Game 3:

Less than 24 hours after his team was accused of commiting a cowardly act by Philadelphia coach John Stevens, Guy Carbonneau has rushed to his players’ defence – especially atoning the behaviour of Tom Kostopoulos.

“That (the Flyers) is one team that shouldn’t talk,” the Canadiens coach said Sunday, after his team participated in an optional practice in LaSalle. “Over 82 games, they had the most suspensions in the league.”

This Eastern Conference semifinal series is threatening to erupt following an incident late in Saturday’s game, won 4-2 by Philadelphia.

After R.J. Umberger’s second goal at 17:39 of the third period, tempers flared between Kostopoulos and Kimmo Timonen. Television replays showed the Flyers’ defenceman laughing and taunting the Canadiens. Indeed, Kostopoulos punched Timonen. Both Kostopoulos and Philadelphia’s Scottie Upshall received roughing minors.

“After that goal, they were taunting our players,” Carbonneau said Sunday. “They should have been happy to score and just gone back to the bench. Don’t turn around and (needle) our players. I think (Timonen) deserved it.”

Predictably, Stevens assessed the situation differently in his post-game comments Saturday.

“The only thing that kind of really disturbs me is that, at the end of the game, Kostopoulos ... to go up and blindside-sucker Kimmo Timonen on a play at the end there ... that’s cowardly, in my opinion,” he said. “There’s no place for that. Kimmo’s our best player. He’s totally unsuspecting. That leaves a bad taste in your mouth.”

On Sunday, Kostopoulos did his best to brush the incident aside, saying his emotions got the better of him. He said he and Carbonneau had spoken briefly about it. Kostopoulos, a fierce competitor, understands he must display better restraint.

“I should have controlled my emotions and skated back to the bench,” he said. “I just let my emotions take control. I was upset. We were about to lose a game. He (Timonen) was laughing and taunting us. But when you’re on top, maybe you can do stuff like that.”

The best-of-seven series is now tied, 1-1, with the next two games in Philadelphia, Monday and Wednesday. Although the Flyers now have home-ice advantage, Carbonneau hasn’t lost any of his resilience. And why would he? The Canadiens controlled the game on Saturday, outshooting Philadelphia 36-23, but where repeatedly thwarted by goaltender Martin Biron.

“We’ve only played two games,” Carbonneau said. “We lost the battle yesterday, but not the war. Yesterday was our best game.”

Defenceman Patrice Brisebois, who missed the second game with a leg injury, is scheduled to undergo tests on Monday, according to a Canadiens official. He didn’t accompany the team to Philadelphia on Sunday, but could rejoin them.
Carbonneau said he might make some lineup changes for tonight’s game, but wouldn’t disclose his thoughts further.

They had 16 shots in the first period of the last game! If that's not coming out flying, I don't know what is.

Speaking of teachers I got a joke... a guy goes to the supermarket and notices an attractive woman waving at him. she says hello. he's rather taken back because he can't place where he knows her from. so he says, "do you know me?" to which she replies, "i think you're the father of one of my kids." now his mind travels back to the only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife and says, "my god, are you the stripper from my bachelor party i had sex on the pool table with all my buddies watching while your partner whipped my butt with wet celery???" she looks into his eyes and says calmly, "no sir. i'm your son's teacher."

LOL, good one. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

The Cat's picture
Youre alright 'the teacher' other than your manlove for Price lol just kidding

The Cat's picture
I cant blame a french canadian like Briere for not wanting to come to Montreal. Our newspapers can go overboard sometimes and can make life very unpleasant for the player and his family. Gainey is good at making them shut up though.

Anybody else think that if this were a real world space as opposed to a virtual space, the Teach would be here 24/7, sleep-deprived, and talking to himself when others weren't around to chat with? I have yet to post a response at any time - whether traveling in Australia and posting in the middle of the day during the hockey draft, making a quick post on Christmas morning, or checking the latest posts at 12:01 a.m. New Year's day, without a response from the main man within two minutes. Do you sleep? Do you eat? ;)

The Teacher's picture
Awwww I'm not THAT bad! There IS a game on you know :P "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

doug's picture
you're right; i stand corrected. took you three minutes to respond that time.

The Teacher's picture
I'm actually playing poker right now, but it's ok, I can take it :) P.S. It only took you 2 :P "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Lol... Boooyaaa!

WOW BRENT BURNS on TSN interview. Says Montreal is a big attraction after seeing what has been going on. He said it would be something to see and experience the life in Montreal. WOW. Funny how winning might change things eh. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Big Bird's picture
Funny indeed Teach. Let players who want to come to Montreal come. Players who want to go elsewhere (Briere, Shanahan et al) can go elsewhere. I'd take a Kostopolous over a Briere any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

doug's picture
i like kostopoulos. i wasn't in favor of a long-term deal for briere, and we seem to have a lot of similar types of players coming up in our system. still... i'd take briere over kostopoulos. as would any g.m. in the entire league.

The Teacher's picture
I was so scared that Bob would sign him. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Big Bird's picture
On a talent basis of course Doug. My point is that I'd rather take a worker bee who wants to be here than a skilled bee who does not.

doug's picture
Sure - but i think anyone who signs as a free agent by definition wants to be here and anyone who doesn't if offered the same amount either does not or didn't see as bright a future. i don't lose a single moment's sleep over who's not here. if briere had chosen to come i'd be a fan, i'm sure. it doesn't bother me when people choose other cities or teams. thanks, bud.

The Teacher's picture
Bingo, Bango, Bongo. You don't want to be here, you are an idiot in my most humble opinion anyways. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

My few cents from the peanut gallery on an off day. (And based on my Habs I/O hockey pool performance I'm way back in the peanut gallery.) (1) I'm glad Kostopolous (aka. Spartan) stood up for his team. It shows we have a spine and pride. Take liberties my Flyer friends but there is a cost. My thanks to Timmonen for the added motivation to the team. (2) It's good Carbonneau stood up for Spartan in turn. Say what you will about Carbonneau - like him or not - but the team in turn will be more responsive and inclined to go to war for a coach that defends them. (3) Other posters are correct in that our team needs to continue to play its game. Let Philly play cheap-shot hockey. We'll keep burning their lumbering luddidites on defence with our speed up front. (4) The impact of Saku Koivu on this team during the playoffs cannot be stated enough. This guy is our heart and soul. He's small but he's a warrior. Especially during crunch time. He reminds me of Henri Richard. (5) I didn't like Brisebois based on his past antics with the team and his fat contract. But in his 2nd tour of duty, he's done well as our top scoring defenceman. I can't believe I'm saying this but I hope he isn't out for long. Not while Markov appears injured and Streit appears lost.

The Teacher's picture
5) My god, I can't believe I have to defend him. I used to call him Breakwood and Brisecrap once upon a time when he deserved it for being SO EFFING ridiculously overpaid. That's why you might see me getting aggravated LOL I HATED him. OK now that I've got that out of my system, he has done a great job in the playoffs for what we are paying him and the fact that he has handled being benched in the regular season with class has impressed me. I did not expect to see him in the playoffs barring injuries but he has handled his role with aplomb. Kudos to him. We are BUILDING a team here for now and for the future. OB will get his chance, he is getting on the job training right now. "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

wat idiots u win a game u didnt deserve and u then taunt the opposition the flyers are asking for an ass whoopin on monday i hope we show them how to win with some class my prediction:habs 5 flyers 0 go habs go

The NFL has realized the detriment of "taunting" and penalizes it. When will the NHL follow suite?

bigdave's picture
Did I miss something or was Carey Price on his knees for both the first two goals? Talk of the the pot calling the kettle black Philly's coach moaning about head shots? Whose team led the league in serious suspensions for head shots?

doug's picture
Carbo's response is a high point in his coaching career thus far. I like the way he backed his players.

This is only a rumour, but then most things are. It's a story about the wickedly rich AK Bars owners of Kazan, Russia (Taftnet oil company) going hard after Canadiens winger Andrei Kostitsyn, a Group 2 free agent on July 1 who made $612,000 this year. "They're going to offer Kostitsyn a $4-million salary," said an NHL team executive. Is it just a coincidence that they are AK? Has anyone else heard anything on this? http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/sports/oilers/story.html?id=e... I checked further, and there is a hockey club. Kovalev played with them in the lockout. http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:p190Hc1dC8YJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A...

24 Cups's picture
Ed - If Andrei K signs and goes back to Russia then his brother would be sure to follow in two years. If that were to ever happen, then you can bet that very few Russians will ever get drafted in the first round regardless of ability and potential. A new cold war would develop between the two leagues. The Original 24.4 Cups

I acutally thought someone was going to make an offer due to him being an RFA...but I can see Gainey with more long-term vision not wanting to hand-cuff the team and bust his cap plans and letting him go... For those RFA rules...can a player turn down the higher offers from other teams or is he forced to take it? Meaning that if he really wanted to stay in Montreal then he could accept the lower offer...

Along with being tax free money. Isn't the russian league largely run by mafia money?

G-Man's picture
Oil. Mafia. Same thing. Gilbert Remember '71? Remember '86? Now is the time to believe. The Drive for 25 is on! Go Habs Go!

doug's picture
I heard this somewhere just prior to the playoffs. . . wherever I read it also suggested that Akost was interested and likely to pursue.

Ed's picture
Even if he is not interested, he can sure use it as a bargaining tool. Then again, Edmonton or some other organization, might offer him a similar amount or more to sign with them. It depends, I guess, on whether or not he would prefer to play in his home country, where the taxes are probably less; or in Montreal, the organization which brought him here. It's going to be an interesting summer, especially if Montreal wins the Cup!

The Teacher's picture
The Habs also showed faith in him after his epilepsy problems. He WAS ranked to 5 heading into the draft no? "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

showey47's picture
I had a feeling a story like this would pop up. I doubt gainey will let him walk since he may be our only hope for a 40 goal scorer in the near future. Besides we have little brother under contract or another 2 years, he may want to stay and play with his brother.

Exit716's picture
He's not going anywhere. Now that he's established in the NHL, he can bring his wife and daughter over.

showey47's picture
Yeah, but now the problem is if the rumour is true about ak bars offering 4 million, gainey will have to offer alot more to offset the taxes. I believe players in the russian super league do not pay taxes on their salaries. I don't know this for sure about the taxes, but if it is true this will pose a huge problem.

doug's picture
yeah - tax free, i believe. you're free to spend your money any way you wish in that thriving metropolis just three hours NORTH of Moscow. some things are more important to me than money...

Exit716's picture
I agree. If true it paints the team into a difficult corner. He's had one good season so there's no way you pay him $6 million per year.

doug's picture
Lowe is a good bet to make an offer to at least a player or two again. . . and if it isn't Akots it might be another of our younger players.

The Teacher's picture
We all hope so don't we? "One face-off, one battle, one shift, one period, one game, one series at a time." "Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

doug's picture
i remembered where i read it - in the hockey news in the march 22nd or march 29th edition. ken campbell column i think. i had the same reaction at first but during the first round no-show (by the team in games 2-6, not him) i was getting worried for a bit that he'd say "ok, back to rich oblivion" if they lost and he felt the heat

The Cat's picture
"nobody thinks we know how to hit, right ? :-)" Honestly, we dont...We only have komisarek that can make an opponent think twice before entering the corner with him. Most of our forwards can hit if they want, but they really cant soften the opponents' defense, were just too small. We must be all about speed where we are most effective.

G-Man's picture
Habs ain't that small. For some mystifying reason, a lot of people think they are the Tiny Tims of the league. Lats, O'Byrne, Higgins, Begin, Hamrlik, Komisarek, Kovalev, A. Kostitsyn, Smolinsky. All guys near or heavier than 220. What do you want, a team of Charas? Gilbert Remember '71? Remember '86? Now is the time to believe. The Drive for 25 is on! Go Habs Go!

The Cat's picture
The flyers are baiting the habs into playing the same style they played against the bruins, the habs mustnt fall for this.

This whole situation will end up in our favour and serve as more motivation for the boys to go out and take the remaining games from under their noses. They know not who they are fooling around with!!! GO HABS GO.........

showey47's picture
I wonder if the flyers coaching staff, and media had not complained about the penalty call at the end of game one which led to the habs tying the game, thus eventually winning in overtime. Would they of called the slash on price's glove at the end of game 2 which led to the 4th goal? The same thing happened after game 2 in montreal when cherry went on his "9000 penatlies" rant and then the refing was astrociously in the bruins favour in game 3. Believe or not, the refs watch and read this stuff on tv and the newspapers also.

TommyB's picture
You know, I am a fan of fast-skating, skilled, hockey. Something our Habs have an abundance of. But something is tempting me..... Perhaps what we need here is an all-out brawl to start game 3. Get it all out. Get it over with. From that point on, the officials will clamp down on all the bullshit, watch every single move, and assess penalties accordingly. It may even cost the Habs game 3, but they would only be down 2 games to 1. After that, the fast-skating skilled team would be able to take over the rest of the series. Too risky? Yeah, maybe, but my coaching instincts tell me this is what to do, and yes, it might be stone-age thinking. But just the same, I wonder........hmmmm

TommyB - I didn't think you were a goon coach, lol.

J.T.'s picture
Nah...I don't think the Flyers are worth the effort. I think the Habs should take the image of the taunting Flyers and use it to fuel their legs and their shots. They should do their pounding on the scoreboard, then skate away without looking back at the Flyers. THAT sends the message that "we're good...too good to act like you." I want the Flyers in the rear-view mirror, and quickly. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

Plenty of insight below from knowledgeable hockey fans, very impressive. Before learning recently that John Stevens had played at the NHL level (Flyers), he struck me as a recent arrival to the NHL coaching ranks who seemed content to make his mark by sending marginal talent over the boards to dilute the NHL skill level one player at a time. My sense now is that there are a couple of other sides to this guy. Showing little to no emotion behind the bench, he guided this edition of the Flyers past Ovechkin & Co and into the 2nd round with a repertoire that includes an ability to calmly explain things to his players. He also showed little emotion while stoking the embers during post-game interviews last night, which leads to me to conclude that this nonsense about cowardly whatever is nothing more than a strategy aimed at stirring it up among : - key players in our dressing room : Tom Kostopoulos is showing himself to be such a player, and - some of the marginal talent in his own dressing room, a given since the pre-season. I agree that Guy Carbonneau has reacted well by speaking out on behalf of TK, and the reference to Steve Downer et al was a nice touch. However, I also suspect this will be the end of it - for now at least, because the Habs ARE a class act and will not spend much time standing around in the philly phertilizer that ' Bob ' Clark made so popular during his public debate with no. 88 and his clan not so long ago. Gamesmanship - Stevens is attempting to build on the modest measure of momentum that his crew took away from the win last night. No big deal - remember : nobody thinks we know how to hit, right ? :-) ... Always Habs - Dave Mex

I don´t care if Guy and Tom were right or wrong. After such a lucky victory a guy like Timonen should just keep his mouth shut, walk away and thank God.

Habsgirl's picture
Yeah, he should have but I'm glad he didn't. It just shows the Flyers to be the classless organization that they are and it will make our guys mad enough to skate circles around them in Philly. I'm glad Carbo spoke out against Stevens. I am sick of his whining. After Game One he said that a penalty that was called wasn't one but he said to the media, "I'll let you guys decide. What do you think?" Like me, like me, like me. Then he went on about TK being sucker punched. TK wasn't blindsided. He was in our faces. He saw Tom coming full on. He deserved what he got. And we have more of where that came from.

GoalieT's picture
MY GOODNESS, HATCHER IS SLOW!!! Mark my words, that guy is going to be made looking stupid multiple times before this series is over. I think he's mildly retarded too. Okay, that's enough of my mean comments. As was said earlier, I too cannot get the vision of those particular Flyers smiling, laughing and taunting our boys after that goal. I am extremely angered by such unsportsmanlike behaviour toward such a classy organization as our Montreal Canadiens. This showed a great lack of respect towards an opponent, if you ask me. With the firestorm of comments going around in the media between these two teams, and the take of one John Stevens' pea sized brain regarding this incident, I'm hoping that our Habs are going to be loaded for bear for the rest of this series. I would love nothing more than to kick their goon asses in 5 games, which would conclude in our barn later this week. Sickening. Grab 'em by the horns, boys, and show 'em what we're made of! They can't hold a candle to what we bring to the table in terms of speed, skill, and intelligence on all things hockey!!! GO HABS, GO!!! Ultimate Die-Hard Since 1986. T.

we lost 5-1 with mark streit out, i doubt he would of made that much of a difference. Last night we had 3 times as many scoring chances than we did in any game in the playoffs thus far. Breezer or no breezer, last nights game should of been a blow out victory for us. Season stats show we were a better team with breezer out of the lineup.

Ater reading some of the posts below, it appears more and more obvious that the CBC is grooming Stock to replace Cherry and his cherry size brain somewhere down the road. Even Maclean appears to be giving a helping hand. Stock has even managed to get on 110% on TQS for some really bonehead comments but I have not seen him of late on that show. He also appeared on RDS for a couple of comments the other day. There's no doubt in my mind that controversial comments a la "the puck is outside the blue zone, it's a free puck" are what CBC is looking for and Stock fits the bill perfectly. Have no fear Habs fans, Habs clearly demonstraded last night that we can take them. The key is to score first (easily said from my all grooved in comfy rocker), but having them chase us for the puck is a lot better than the other way around. Philly simply cannot match the Habs speed and skill. Carey will bounce back and Biron will eventually drop that horseshoe.

RH's picture
It might be a dogfight between Stock and that complete moron, Mike Milbury. I can't believe that guy ACTUALLY get's paid to spew that garbage that comes out of his mouth.

As hard as it might be to believe I would take Milbury over Stock anyday. Stock is a weeney who is now trying to prove to CBC that he hates the Habs enough to be a part of their team. He will say or do anything to fit in. As soon as Ron contradicts him he backs right off like a good weeney. He's a spineless little moron. At least Milbury will defend what he says. Seriously, the guy makes me gag. He has no b@!!$. Even CBC staff must be laughing their a$$e$ off at this twit. It's like he's in training to be their new top dork. Hilarious. GO HABS.

Habs should just hold their tongues and show how they feel in the upcoming games. Taunting is classless and revenge is a dish best served cold. Thank you, Mr. Timonen, for supplying the habs with all the extra jump they will have the rest of the series.

MONTREAL — Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos will not be suspended for his left hook sucker punch to the face of Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Kimmo Timonen on Saturday. The NHL hockey operations office reviewed the incident and ruled that because Kostopoulos was penalized on the play and Timonen was not injured, no further discipline was necessary. The unpleasant incident occurred after Flyers forward R. J. Umberger scored the match's final goal with two minutes and 21 seconds remaining in the third period. As the post-goal celebration took place, Kostopoulos punched Timonen with a left hook and then the Montreal player fell on top of Timonen. In his post-game remarks, Flyers coach John Stevens seethed when asked about the scene, calling it “cowardly, in my opinion.” Kostopoulos was given a roughing penalty, but so Philadelphia forward Scott Hartnell, who went after the Montreal player after the sucker punch. Montreal Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau defended the actions of his player on Sunday as his team prepared for game 3 in Philadelphia on Monday. The Eastern Conference best-of-seven semifinal is knotted at 1-1. “After that goal they should not have been taunting our players,” Carbonneau said. “They should have been happy and went to the bench. Don't turn around and [deride] our players. “He deserved it. That's why they didn't call any [extra] penalties on it.” Timonen said that he didn't say anything to the Canadiens after Umberger's second goal of the game nor did he do anything that would have been perceived as taunting. Kostopoulos backed up Timonen's claim by stating that he simply lost his emotions. “I just let my emotions take control,” Kostopoulos said. “I was upset and we were losing. “I should have controlled my emotions and skated back to the bench.”

All this nonsense just makes it even more clear to me that the Flyers are upholding their tradition of being a bunch of goons. What are they complaining for? They won a game that, in my opinion, should have gone our way. I guess you could say they got us back for stealing game 1 from them. Let's call it even and move on. Game 3 is ours if we keep up the way we played in game 2. Minus the lucky goals, of course...

Habs will ga as far in the playoffs, as Price will take them. agreed?

Got2BHabs's picture
Not agreed. So lets say the next 3 games Philly wins 1 nothing, Price takes them to the exit in the second round? Team Team Team!!!! You have to have 20 players doing their jobs. They have to clear the pucks on PKs, they have to score on the PP, they can't give the puck away in front of the the net, and yes, Price has to keep the puck out of the net. Everyone has jobs and if the puck gets behind Carey, then there is probably more "blame" to go around than just to pin it on Price. What led up to the goal? Was there a give away? Was there a failed clearing attempt? Don't make Price the scape goat, it's not right.
