The Canadiens and Flyers had a day off on Thursday as they prepare for Game 5 on Saturday night with Philadelphia holding a 3-1 series lead.

Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau has decided who his starting goaltender will be, but he has not made that decision public and might not do so until Saturday.

The Flyers, meanwhile, will be on the ice in Philadelphia Friday morning before heading to Montreal where they hope to close out the series and avoid what happened in Round 1, when they allowed the Capitals to come back from a 3-1 deficit before the Flyers finally won the series in Game 7.

The Canadiens are the last team to win a series after trailing 3-1 when they did it in 2004 against the Boston Bruins, but this will be a tough task for the Habs.

Here's a look at what's being said:

• Dave Stubbs: Moral victories not enough
• Pat Hickey: Biron refuses to take credit
• Hickey: Flyers' Dowd isn't getting younger, but career is far from over
• The Gazette's Jan Ravensbergen: Canadiens fans lse faith in bleu-blanc-rouge
• The Gazette's Herb Zurkowsky: Carbo keeps cool
• Canoe.ca: Journal de Montréal coverage en français
• Cyberpresse.ca: La Presse coverage en français
• Ray Parrillo, Philadelphia Inquirer: Habs wonder what's gone wrong
• Tim Panaccio, Philadelphia Inquirer: Brière: Depth and versatility fortifying Flyers
• Inquirer: Defence is a chip off the old block
• Ed Moran, Philadelphia Daily News: In Game 5 against Canadiens, Flyers look to avoid rerun of Round 1
• Ed Barkowitz, Daily News: Canadiens won't reveal goalie of choice yet
• Tim Wharnsby, Globe and Mail: Carbonneau gives troops a day off as tall task looms
• Roy MacGregor, Globe and Mail: Brière the invisible superstar makes his mark

Don't they have their quota of Swedish Meatballs in Detroit? It's only fair to give him to the Habs! We're going to have a tough time now that his fellow national Frazen rips up a Trick in an 8 goal series finisher and that we don't have any fellow countrymen for him to play with....

Winning Formula:

A. Kost, Pleks, Kovy
S. Kost, Koivu, Streit
Higgins, Lapierre, Latendresse
Kostop, Smokes, Begin

Markov, komi
Hamirlik, O'bryne
Bouil, Georges

Price

This will get us back to game 7

Now is the time to believe. The Drive for 25 is on! Go Habs Go!

Slightly off-topic, but I believe a compliment is due our HIO page and The Gazette. Note the listings of Habs stories beneath today's Stanley Cup -- I, for one, appreciate that The Gazette lists the articles AND provides links to coverage in competing newspapers (in deference to The Gazette, I'll not list the names).

Talk about providing a service to Habs fans. I'm out here in Edmonton, and it's no longer difficult to keep track of the Habs on the Net -- I just come to HIO. Oh, and the regular contributions of Mssrs. Stubbs, Mio and Boone are also muchly appreciated.

Just my $.02.

I absolutely agree - I love the audio, the photos, the regulars, the opinions, the arguments...I love everything about this site. Thank you!!

Since this site began last season, it's my home page. The articles and comments keep me coming back for more. This site is very much appreciated, so kudos to all involved.

It is an excellent site. I work for another paper in the Canwest family that also includes the Gazette, and frequent the Gazette site for articles on the Habs (since we never have any, lol). Found HIO and it's by far the BEST site out there. Hands down.

Where is he standing with the replica 'centre ice'?

He was at the Old montreal forum.

Dave... I've been trying to send something since yesterday but it wouldn't post... I tried several times yesterday and a couple of times today... I just noticed a message that it was being flagged as possible spam.. I guess now that you have several of the same... sure looks like spam!

tks

Scotty has your post ever been posted previously in another Thread? The system flags repeated posts or copied secetions from another post as spam to cut down on the infamous double posts that use to occur.

No... i've not posted it before!

Scotty...a man of wisdom, if you saw this lineup would you fall out of your seat..or cheer FINALLY!

kovy/koivu/ryder - akost/plek/higgs - lats/Chip/stewart - kostop/smoke/begin
hammer/obryne - cube/gorges - mark/komi

Scotty90's picture

Hi Prof... I think I'd like to see Kovi back with AKost and Pleks... and SKost back with Higgins and Koivu.. Maybe even Higgins on a third or fourth line and put Lats on the second line; Carbo had tried that several weeks back and it seemd to work well. I would like to think that Ryder would be explosive buut I'm not sure he is the best frame of mind these days.. it could hurt more than anything and we have no games to spare. I would like to see Stewart in the line-up... he showed lots of spunk vs. the leafs and I think that injection of energy would be a good thing. You may want to shoot me, but I think Brisebois should in there.

Got2BHabs's picture

I think what it all boils down to is that every NHL hockey player dreams of winning the Stanley Cup. I just really can't see Ryder doing anything but his best for this hockey club. I'm sure if he got inserted into the line-up, he would want to stay there and the best way of doing that is by working hard and scoring goals. I'd like to see him get that chance.

Now that's a great pic! Let's all collectively piss upon the Flyers! :)

Scotty - Desperate times call for desperate measures....

we don't know his frame of mind, but he's a good smiling positive east coast kid...He'd love the chance to let some rockets fly...

as for Stewart, if he threw a big hit every shift...that alone would be enough..

Scotty90's picture

I'm all for Stewart... as for Ryder.. if he could have another 13 shots on net performance like he did back in the fall after he sat a few games.. i'd say lets give it a shot. As for Brisebois, he's got that good first pass for the breakout and a great point shot. OB has not been hitting so I would prefer what Breezer bring to the table.

Sammy's picture

Stewart for Sergei Kostitsyn? Are you joking?

Big Bird's picture

Hey Habs-Prof,

You want to sit out Latendresse for Stewart? Not sure I agree with that. He'll provide energy but his skating is suspect and he can't finish.

Lapierre has also been a pretty good penalty killer but I've liked Chipchura so that may not be a bad idea. Especially if Chips has improved on faceoffs.

I still think Michael Ryder deserves a shot especially if this is his last game (should we be eliminated) in a Habs uniform.

I think I had Lats still in there...you think Stewarts skating is suspect? I recall him "Outskating" the laff defense on the 2 or 3 rushes he had, Its his drive, grit and determination, willingness to drop the gloves that got him the nod in my books...he was kept around for a longshot chance that could materialize under specific circumstances!!!..that time has come!!!

Glad you see the advantage of chip/ryder - Lap is skating but I don't understand why he turns away instead of finishing the check.

anyway, we are facing elimination, the lineup that Carb has used against the CHEESESTEAKS does not work...we can't expect the same guys to all of a sudden start walking on water, we need to inject other personalities, other traits into the lineup...DAMN why is Carb so stubborn.

He's not stubborn. Lets call a spade a spade. He is not a coach. I suspect the Canadiens would have gotten as far as they are today and maybe farther if Youppi was coaching. I'm sorry but let's not have the Jack Adams trophy tarnished by giving it to a line juggler who is not even competent at that.

Ryder CAN score goals, and throw his weight around. Same goes for Chipchura and where the hell is Grabs. We have at least 3 players that are used game after game after game after game with the same GD results and all Carbo can do is stand behind the bench and smirk every time we get penalized. I think he would be a better player today than he is a coach.

Billyboy, you've got it....4 damn games and the boston series...figure a Jack Adams candidate would have figured out whats coming at his team.

sure we've outshot them, but it takes more than shots to hit the back of the net....it takes sucker punches to the face like downie to halak, it takes slew footing price etc etc etc.... that'll get you penalties, it will get you thrown out of a game (Hatchet on Cube).....

But it will win you a series.
