I like the way they all played...although Price coulda been better in round two! I'm not complaining though! not about that at least! some jerk posted something on one of the other pages saying that Saku Koivu, our beloved Capitano, is pigheaded! can you believe it?! I think he was just saying that cuz he's jealous that he'll NEVER be as good as Koivu!

The Cat's picture
While I liked Brisebois and Smolinski's play in the playoffs, they really shouldn't crack the lineup of a good team.

Just read on TSN that Brisebois and Smolinski want another year. Just say no Bob...

The Teacher's picture
Don't say no to Smokes just yet, we have no idea who we may or may not be able to sign.

You are right, teach - don't say no to Smolinski just yet - I think he still may have a half decent season left in him....patience, wait and see.....

Chipchura > Smolinski, IMO. If and it's a big "if" we sign a top 6 guy, then Higgins is a 3rd liner...our 3rd line would be Chipper, Lats, and Higgy??? Oh man, things are looking up for the Centennial!!! Really want to see Lapierre centering Begin and Kostop on the 4th...

The 2007-08 Habs were fantastic and I enjoyed every minute (almost every minute) of this season. I have become even more of a fan after this season! It was tough to watch them go out vs. Philly but they will come back stronger next season. The management and coaching did a fantastic job and must be commended. Emerging superstars like Price and Komisarek were given the opportunity to learn and grow. The Kostitsyn brothers looked great as did Plekanec, and Streit. Koivu and Markov were solid all season long and Kovalev was just super. Players like Smolinski and Brisebois showed their worth in the post season and silenced many critics on this site. Latendresse, Lapierre, Higgins, and Gorges all learned lessons this season and will arrive in camp with new goals and expectations of themselves. Look at the future Chipchura, O'Byrne, Valentenko, McDonagh, Pacioretty, Yemelin, and many more. In other words, the future looks great for this franchise and we as fans know that the best is yet to come! Thank you Montreal Canadiens!!! Through the off-season I would love to add a top six forward (Hossa or Sundin), a veteran goalie (Belfour, Joseph, Thibault, Theodore, Kolzig, or Hedberg) with a move of Halak, and another veteran presence (would love to see Chelios bring along the young U.S. born players in the organization). I really think with these moves the Canadiens could become a legitimate cup contender and maybe even a favourite! GO!HABS!GO!

1. Wasn't Kolzig Price's coach for awhile? If so, he might be a great backup goalie, with the understanding that he gets 20-25 games, unless Price is injured. I would hate to see Halak go, but suspect he will leave sometime on the near future if he's not getting significant playing time. 2. No thanks on Chelios or Sundin. Hossa will probably be too expensive. I don't think Yemelin will ever cross the waters. I think Brisebois will get pushed aside by several of the youngsters. Smolinski might be a good insurance policy. I pray AK46 doesn't go to the Russian Super League. 3. I concur with your 1st sentence.

careypriceroxmyworld's picture
why don't you think Yemelin will cross the waters? is he scared or somethin'? LOL! just kidding! yeah, Chelios and Sundin are gettin' kinda old and I don't really like Hossa, but your right, he probly will be too expesive! aww they can't get rid of Halak! he's so good, just not as good as Price!

Why pass on Sundin or Chelios if they are available? They would not be the focus of the team, they would simply teach and stabilize the youth in the organization.

The Cat's picture
Jdub, I too think Philly will beat Pittsburgh. They have a better 'one goal wins in regulation' ratio than Pitts; a true sign of a good team.

The Cat's picture
Paul Maurice deserved to be fired IMO. At the beginning of the year, he failed with his goalies, alternating them like no one's business when he should have just let Toskala get in his groove instead of creating this number one position is up for grabs competition, and not too mention all those 3rd period defensive breakdowns; it seems they didnt have a solid defensive scheme, and that has to fall with the coach. Toronto for all their faults were a very good 5on5 team (top 5 in the east for a good portion of the year)and would've been dangerous had they snuck in the playoffs.

TommyB's picture
Toronto flat out sucked!

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Aww come on Tommy, don't be so harsh. Using the simple(ton) logic employed by some of the brainiacs here, if Toronto would have just won 6 of the games they lost in regulation they would have been in.

TommyB's picture
Sorry GTC, I'm sticking to my claim...LOL

Who could perform consistently under one year contracts, in, where you are carved up under the microscope after every game? Other players have been given latitiude to make mistakes (Kovalev, "latenderness")but not Ryder. I can only conclude that Gainey saw him as a flash in the pan...the three 25-30 seasons as some series of lucky bounces. If Ryder plays well in 2008/09 his name will be added to that growing list of Montreal write offs who blossom elsewhere. If he does not play well elsewhere Gainey will look like a genius. BTW...if we add a forward don't we want a top 6? Now who do we demote. I guess Higgins will finally end up where he belongs...checking third line center.

TommyB's picture
First off, those one-year contracts with Ryder were just as much his doing as Gainey's. Ryder was trying to keep the door open for an exit should something come up somewhere where he might actually want to play. Trouble is, it blew up in his face.

Rob's picture
One has to wonder why a Leafs fan (LBChase) spends so much time on a Habs board.... but then if one spends their time trying to figure out the actions of a Leafs fan, they'll probably find themselves without any time left for anything else. That being said, can the rest of us Habs fans please stop replying to annoying posts, the likes of which are posted by LBChase, which are clearly only posted to garner a reaction. If you don't stop reacting he will not go away. And i think every one of us wants him to go away. But like most children, the only way to make them stop their annoying behaviour is to ignore it. Please heed that advice when dealing with people like LBChase, and the other annoyances that frequent this space. Thank you

Francois Gagnon is a Dumb *** . Why does he still have a Job. Great move to pee off Kovalev and Koivu. There go our chances to sign anybody. He though he was ok and just got mislead the last article he wrote about Kovalev but this one takes the cake.

http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080507.wspthabs7/GSStor... SIGH...there goes the off-season efforts to find that impact forward...what a moron...

The Teacher's picture
That is a flag

The Teacher's picture
Fine, what does pepper have to do with it?

ice_queen's picture
you're kidding, right? a "pepper" is used to refer to French Quebecers, much like how anglos are referred to as "têtes carrés" ... I'm curious, is being called a "frog" worse than a "pepper"?

The Teacher's picture
Well, I'm being sarcastic, if that could be construed as kidding? I know it's a derogatory term ;) I think Frog is worse for some reason?

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Frog huh? That's it, you're flagged.

ice_queen's picture
It's hard to detect sarcasm in writing! :p

The Teacher's picture
I know, I know. I'll give you a pass lol

Typical political BS. More French music ... hmmm ... so the 30 second snipits they play before faceoffs need to be 65% French ... so that's 19.5 seconds that need to be in French ... most songs start with some kind of musical riff, so that eats up about 15 seconds ... but wait, 65% of that is .... When are these morons going to realise that language laws and hockey should NEVER mix. The Habs have fans that speak a multitude of languages, not to mention players from all over the globe. What's next ... when a major recording artist comes to the Bell Centre, are they going to have to translate 65% of their lyrics? Forgive me for ranting, but the politicos in Quebec make me absolutely sick. The Montreal Canadiens represent the City of Montreal ... NOT THE QUEBEC GOVERNMENT!!!! Whew ... that felt good!

ice_queen's picture
Heard about that on the radio this morning. What nonsense. Hardly surprising though.

The Teacher's picture
BLAH, why are you giving it the attention it does not deserve? I'd rather not waste my time with this drivel. Clue: French speaking people DO listen to English popular music (gasp) How dare they! RDS advertises their hockey pool with the slogan "Mardi de bon pool" Last I heard, pool was not a French word, why don't they go after them ? but I digress.

forskis's picture
You are right, this is not the place and I do apologize for bringing in "poli" into a hockey forum, but anything that disparages les Boys in a non-constructive, stupid way makes my blood boil...

the real vinnydj's picture
Instead of writing articles and starting a petition maybe they could have just asked them to play more French tunes. When I DJ, people ask me to play what they want to hear. Some people just amaze me

Ed's picture
After the last game against Philly, there were links to various reports, including Pat Hickey's "Season ends on a sour note". That link no longer works, and it appears that the article is no longer available. Does anybody know why it was removed? Was Hickey's article flagged as offensive? :) http://www.habsinsideout.com/main/8062

Laffs turn another leaf giving Maurice his Walking papers.... More from TSN..

G-Man's picture
More knee jerk reactions from the Laffs, a riot since '67! :) Gilbert

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Maurice was one of the few bright spots on that sad franchise. The only sense I can make of it is that it's part of an effort to attract a high profile GM who would likely find additional incentive in signing with the laffs knowing that he can immediately install his own man.

HUH? JFJ created the biggest mess ever.

refused to let them spend money, ARE YOU FOR REAL? He spent the money, he just decided to overpay everyone and give them No trade clauses on top of it. A move I'm 100% confident you would do if you were a GM.

G-Man's picture
One thing I goota say. You live in a BIG DREAM WORLD, where you are the receptacle of all hockey knowledge. The surprise is, why haven't you been snapped up as GM of the Laffs, yet?. Gilbert

It's damn hard to not butt heads with shmuks like this isn't it Teach? Hey I've got an idea, instead of actually responding to them, we could just type 'NO SOUP FOR YOU! NEXT!!' What do you think?

The Teacher's picture
sure, that can be our standard reply to trolls! GREAT IDEA

smiler2729's picture
Why the criticism of Bob Gainey and Guy Carbonneau? I have total faith in BG, he's something most of us aren't - patient. BG's a proven winner in every thing hockey whether it be as player, coach or GM. He has given this franchise its identity back after it was teetering on becoming Maple Leafs-East with the Tremblay/Houle fiasco. Kudos also to Andre Savard for getting that ball rolling. I trust Gainey and if you don't, well, that's your opinion but let me ask you all this - if not Gainey as GM of the Canadiens then who? Who out there has the knowledge, experience, savvy and not mention "kuhonas" to work in the heat of the Montreal media and handle the bilingual aspect? As for Carbo, the whispers throughout the NHL going back 4-5 years was Guy Carbonneau had what it took to become a very successful NHL head coach... and Gainey saw that too and wooed him from Dallas. He is learning on the job and seems to be adapting very well, I think his best has yet to come and he will go down in Habstory as one of their best... again, if not Carbo, people, then who would you want coaching the Habs? As for the team, it was a fun season, the playoffs became a letdown but they do for 15 of the 16 post-season qualifiers, don't they? I see this team having many deep playoff runs in the next decade with hopefully some Cups (don't count out next year - the 100th anniversary - the hockey gods do smile on this team when it seems fitting). I had no problem with any of the players, they did their best even the role players had their moments. I especially loved the play of Roman Hamrlik and his calming influence defensively (he had to spend most of his time worrying about covering a rather slow Patrice Brisebois). I didn't think Cristobal Huet was a playoff goalie and I was right and giving Carey Price the experience will be huge in him becomeing a force. I really wish Michael Ryder could have got his stuff together to succeed but, hey, it is what it is. All in all, we have a great team with even greater promise so quit ragging on those who brought us here. We'll get our Cup... soon.

smiler2729's picture
Yeah, Huet was so good and confident when we blew a 2-0 games lead over the Hurricanes in the 1st round of the '06 playoffs... man, that Cory Stillman shot from the blueline in Game 6 OT still haunts me, yeah, Huet on his knees, the puck over his shoulder... nice. Or that Matt Stajan floater from the blueline with 2 minute sleft in an earlier game this year, not to mention that brutal game to end the season last year against Toronto.

Grabbed The Cup's picture
There you are again, buried shoulder deep in LB's colon.

smiler2729's picture
Again... who would rather be the GM?

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Forget it Smiler, he's a lost cause. These petty little trolls are here just to disrupt adult conversations, sort of like bratty children running downstairs and banging on pots while their parents are trying to throw a dinner party.

The Teacher's picture
The question he asked, was, WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE AS YOUR GM? He didn't ask you to highlight every single one of Gainey's so called bad moves like you have been doing since you unfortunately showed up..

For God's sake could you please get off the subject of Bob Gainey......Does this GM consume your thoughts day and night????? You are allowed your opinion - but continuously nattering on about him is getting a little BORING.......

ZepFan2's picture
"the answer is any competant hockey person who can think logically." Well, that eliminates you! "even john ferguson in toronto never came close to making as many or such blunders as gm of leafs" Well, there it is folks, idiocy in all it's glory...John Ferguson Jr. was/is a better GM than Bob Gainey...LMMFAO And you wonder why people are labeling you a troll.

ZepFan2's picture
"except i clearly said i am not in the hockey business" Well you certainly have big fantasies..."id do better than gainey i can guarantee that". I just wanted to let you down easy! Next...Suivant!!

What are your credentials, I think there would be short comings when you compare them to Gainey's.

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Oh christ, this reminds me of a joke post I made about a week ago where I was mocking... well I'll leave it for you to guess who... CARBO KILLED RYDER THIS YEAR, SAME WAY HE KILLED SAMSONOV LAST YEAR! HE'S THE WORST COACH IN HOCKEY! EVEN DON CHERRY WOULD BE BETTER AND HE HASN'T COACHED IN ALMOST 30 YEARS!! WHAT DO YOU EXPECT SINCE HE WAS HIRED BY GAINEY, WORST GM IN THE HISTORY OF HOCKEY, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF WITH FERGUSON, AT LEAST HE TOOK SOME CHANCES!!! THE HABS ARE TOO SOFT, TOO EUROPEAN, AND LACK SIZE, GET US RYAN GETZLAF!!!! DAMMIT CARBO AND GAINEY MAKE ME SO MAD I COULD JUST... JUST... BLAST! NOW I'VE GONE AND SOILED MYSELF!!!!!

I like to call myself a regular to this site since I have been coming around LONG before we had to LOGIN and I may not always agree with what some of you have to say but I do respect the opinions of others. In the past few weeks I would have to say that 80% of the posts I have read were from somebody I have never seen on here before and quite frankly I have Flagged a few of those as Offensive posts. Now that I have had a few days to let reality sink in I thought I would give my thoughts on the season and to what some of you have been saying. First, I will say that we as fans have the right to disagree with any decision that is made by our GM and Coach, but we as fans do not know why these decisions are made. Ryder didn't play! Is it possible that something was said that we don't know about. We hate when things leak to the media so maybe this time it didn't leak. How many pts did Streit get? Why would we want to get rid of him? We will not make the playoffs :( We finished first:) I could go on for days about what was good or bad this year but over all I will have to say that I'm happy with where we are at in terms of building this young team into perennial contenders. Wishing luck to Carbo!!!

The Teacher's picture
but it seems likely this has gone on for the last 2 years with him being forced to sign just a one year deal. Can you stop talking out of the wrong orifice and make sense. You HAVE NO IDEA what went on in the negotiations. Maybe Ryder said I want 4 million a year for 4 years. Well you know what if that was true? GAINEY IS A VERY SMART MAN! MUCH SMARTER THAN YOU OR I

The Teacher's picture
NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! NEXT! the fact he was forced into playing on a 1 year deal TWICE fORCED? OHH YEAAHH HE WAS FORCED..lmao lmao

Nice report card Robert L...Some grades I disagree with if I may do so without being labeled a troll, I think Hamrlik deserves an A+ for being our most reliable D back there...Higgins maybe Id give him a B-, he just doesnt produce like he should and thats his job. And for the way he played his last 2 games against Philly, I might give Plekanec an A...And Gainey gets a C, a passing grade just and Im being kind here cause as I said before, the way the goaltending situation was handled was poor and on the verge of inexcusable IMO, Carbonneau bears some blame for that too...

The Teacher's picture
Agree on Hamrlik disagree on Higgins. He posted career highs in all stats, and he gets a B-...sorry. Plekanec an A? sorry but Pleky gets a B or B+ from me, his relative disappearance in the playoffs brought his grade down a letter. Gainey a C? SIGH..no comment.

We all complain that Gainey doesn't take risks, well give him credit he handed the torch to Price and sticks by it. Give him credit. Odds were in favor that Price would prevail. Based on some of my posts I am not confident that Price will prevail but I don't blame Gainey for it. He's done a great job, is a perfect fit for Montreal. Remember the culture is different, the politics are evident, the stakes are higher, and the pressure to win is great. The rebuilding process was enormous and not many players wanted to play in Montreal. This is fact. Gainey has turned around this organization and done it with class. Many of us would love to be like him, articulate, bi lingual, savy, smart, and credible. We will be contenders very soon and finalists in two years, if we get the goaltending!!

The Teacher's picture
We get it you abhor Gainey, MOVE THE #%@#$ ON. I hate logging on to this site and having to scroll through 5 pages to skip over your freaking useless posts.

No soup for you. Next? Gilbert

habsguy's picture
well said Ton, I couldn't agree with you more. Lastyear I was thinking that in 2 or 3 years we could win it all. When the playoffs started this year, I thought, with a little luck they would go far......Well they didn't have any luck, and yes goaltending let them down.... I'm not worried about the goaltending, and just like you said.....FINALISTS in two years....hell maybe even next !!!!

Finally someone who's reasonalbe! Thank you. Goaltending let us down but its forgivable for the sake of development. We will have the team and if goaltending fails us Gainey will react. I remember Scott Bowman pulled Dryden for game 2 in favour of Bunny Larougue. Unfortuneately he got a puck in the head in warm ups (lol) and Dryden got back in and shined the rest of the way. Gainey was MVP that year. Were all hurting now as hab fans because its been so long but Gainey is taking us there. He's not a mind reader but this is the criteria that should be used to measure him; are his decisions right 90% of the time. I would say yes.

Cat...Everything is open for debate here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. People here get upset when the room is dominated by certain individuals who post the samething over and over. Nobody here cares if you want to rant or vent over certain issues, heck most of the people here will join the debate. But when the room is flooded and dominated and every third or forth post is by the same person saying the samething, people get upset...

The Cat's picture
Yes Morrow is a magnificient player bigbird...I have a question for everyone. Why is it whenever someone here critiques the habs, theyre instantly called a troll? Is this a fan forum where no criticism or arguing hockey is allowed and one can only say rah rah home team? I keep hearing LBChase is a troll but the man has put up some solid hockey analysis. I mean I often hear, I have faith in Gainey, Carbo etc etc but it is rarely backed up by any facts. I come here because Im a fan, but to me being a fan doesnt constitute being a lemming.

Big Bird's picture
Cat, When someone criticizes the team, Bob Gainey, Guy Carbonneau or the usher in section 114 that does not make them a troll. The problem with some posters is not that they disagree but the manner in which they do it. I may not agree with you on your hockey perspectives - nor you with mine - but that's fine as you articulate yourself in a professional and polite manner. The rules which are prominently posted to the right of the screen state that there is a 'zero-tolerance policy regarding racism, profanity and behaviour deemed to be offensive'. Those rules have been broken by LBChase on more than one occasion. If you don't believe me, then please ask the site administrators why some of his posts were deleted after being flagged as offensive by posters. Clearly, the site admins must agree or his post wouldn't be deleted. People may not agree with his hockey commentary and that is fine. Nor does he have to agree with that of others. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and if we all agreed 100% then this place would indeed get pretty boring pretty quickly. But when you use profanity directed at others (which he has), when you bring in politics (which he has) and when you target a religious group (which he has) that generates a response. When one consistently behaves in a repugnant manner it is inevitable they will get called on it. I certainly offer no apologies for doing that nor should any other posters be expected to either.

The Teacher's picture
You are awesome Sulemaan. And I just couldn't help but respond today.

Big Bird's picture
At least one of your comments on this post got deleted by the site admins where you made a comment about a religious group. http://www.habsinsideout.com/blues/7487 Another poster responded to that comment of yours that got deleted: Submitted by t1tan5 on Fri, 04/25/2008 - 14:07. you're on some roll. clearly you're trying to start a flame war. i will not bite, sorry. There is your one example.

The Teacher's picture
Yup, noticed that his remarks had been deleted. Kudos to you for leaving right away and not allowing yourself to get baited.

Big Bird's picture
Thanks Adriano. Gotta call a spade a spade.

The Teacher's picture
Definitely.

ZepFan2's picture
"How about a left wing liar lying like you do?" How is he lying? Are you denying you post the same garbage over and over, yet offer no solutions of your own. You don't like Gainey and Carbonneau, we get it already!!! So why don't YOU tell us how YOU would run the Habs. This should be good. Also, what does anyones political stance have to do with your ranting and raving??

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Many good points as usual Big Bird, please allow me to add a few; Repetetive 'Copy and paste' posts will also get you a bad rep here. If you want to state that you've become impatient with BG's slow building method that's fine, as long as you don't repeat yourself ad nauseum. Perhaps you disagree with Carbo's coaching style, fine then, but don't make a moronic post saying 'Carbo sucks! He's the worst coach ever! I could do better recovering from a hangover! Make a clear case why you dislike what he's done. As for the players, try to see the big picture. Several people here are permanently in my 'Idiot book' for saying that Carey Price is a lousy goaltender simply because he faltered during the playoffs. Some of you may find that a bit harsh on my part but if someone wants to malign a 20 year old kid whom every expert and virtually every fan considers a 'can't miss prospect' with gusts up to 'future stanley cup winner' based solely on his first playoff appearance, you deserve what you get.

ZepFan2's picture
"dont like what someone says THEN DONT READ IT" Kind of hard to do when every second post is YOU posting the same garbage over and over and over again. I think everyone here has got your point, you don't like Gainey or Carbonneau...NEXT...SUIVANT!

Couldn't agree with you more. This kid is gonna be good, like I said before it's not his fault that he was pushed into that role. He did a fabulous job and every single fan who was at the Bell Centre on Sat thanked him by chanting his name.
