Canadiens announced today they have signed centre Ryan White to a three-year contract.

A native of Brandon who played his junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen of the Dub, White was the Canadiens' third-round draft choice (66th overall) in 2006.

Here's the team's press release:

Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today that forward Ryan White agreed to a three-year contract (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11).

As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

White ended his four-year junior career with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen with 237 points (91 goals, 146 assists) and 411 penalty minutes in 275 regular-season games. A native of Brandon, Manitoba, White led his team in scoring in each of the past three seasons. In 59 career playoff games with the Hitmen, White amassed 41 points (17 goals, 24 assists) and 88 penalty minutes.

In 2007-08, the 20-year-old recorded 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists), 98 penalty minutes, 8 power-play goals and had a plus-24 rating in 68 games.

White, 6-feet, 213 pounds, was named the CHL Player of the Week twice during the 2007-08 campaign. He scored 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in a four-game span that ended on February 4 and registered 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) and had a plus-6 rating in four playoff games last April, helping the Calgary Hitmen eliminate the Swift Current Broncos in six games.

Selected in the third round (66th overall) by the Canadiens in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, White also had two assists in as many games for Team WHL at the 2007 Canada-Russia Challenge.

I'm a Hitmen season ticket holder, and clearly, White had an off year this year. I don't know what his deal was, if he was disappointed he didn't make the Habs (I don't know why he would expect to), or if he was feeling more pressure with the Hitmen expected to be a contender, but he was a bit iffy at times, making some really mind-blowingly bad decisions at times. He also didn't show the same kind of grit he showed in the '07 season, when he was a top-five scorer in the WHL. So I suspect there was a degree of malaise there, and I wonder if moving up to the next level won't re-spark him. It's too early to say, really, where he'll finish up, but if nothing else, he should show some staying power in the NHL as a checking/energy player, which isn't bad for a third-rounder, and his upside could make him a steal, though I agree he's likely a 2-3 year project at this point.

Nothing wrong with a little Western Hockey League grit. It's one thing we could use.

We need a sandpaper guy like Brian Skrudland.

Who the hell is Ryan White? Future lifelong Bulldog?

why does Gainey always go after RETREADS? ie. Smolinski, Breezer?
and now Yashin?

ZepFan2's picture

"why does Gainey always go after RETREADS?"

So you consider Briere, Smyth, Hossa, and Shanahan "retreads"?!

How YOU have the nerve to call anybody an "idiot" is beyond me.

Don't forget Brett Hull!

dude, it's just a RUMOUR. and smolinski wasn't too shabby in the playoffs. most teams have one or two experience guys. nothing wrong with gainey's thinking when he picked up smolinski.

Rumours that Habs are kicking the tires on Yashin, any takers?

Chorske's picture

Reads more to me like Yashin is kicking the tires on us.

Please GOD no

I hope not. The man is a washout who thinks he's a star. Sounds lie another Toronto-based b.s. rumour.

WHEW!!! At least now we know it's not true...

are we becoming the russian refuge?

if yashin signs for 2 million and plays 2-ways then i'd take him

big centre with a scoring touch.

he could develop into a good gritty playoff type of player. Look at tommy k?? Everyone bashed him during the regular season but he and begin are the kind of guys you need in the playoffs and I'm sure they were not 1st rounders. The sleeper picks are always pleasant surprises and you NEED to sign these guys. Whats there to lose? He may or may not pan out, but who knows in a couple of years of seasoning in Hamilton and who knows what 3rd or 4th liners of last years team that we'll still have on the team. Lots of things could change in a couple of years and I think this is what separates bob gainey from the rest of you backseat GMs is that bob actually sees the big picture. He's not only planning for the present but also the future.

I have to ignore the Gainey and Carbo bashers and say YES to signing a young player with grit. Hard-nosed role players are good for any team, and this kid's offensive numbers tells me he knows where the opposition's net is. Is he a work in progress? Sure, but good things come to those who wait.

Well this shows BG is hard at work. Hopefully he is planning some magical way to sign or trade for another top-six forward.

We beat the Bruins (who were without Bergeron) and lost to the Flyers (who were without Gagne). We need to improve our club's talent level. Sure, the youngsters will improve, but so will the youth of our competitors.

The rest of the playoffs are interesting, but honestly I can't wait until the draft (did I say that?) and the start of free agency.

Go BG Go!

Sounds like Latendresse #2.

I hope Timmons is wrong, when he says White will be a 3rd or 4th liner. We have enough of those type of players. We need a top 6 forward!

The Teacher's picture

Umm, we don't have enough of them you mean?

planet - That's what Brenden Morrison was projected.

latest Timmins comments from HF

17. (16) Ryan White, 19, C
Acquired: 3rd round, 66th overall, 2006

While the Canadiens were anxious to draft the young Calgary native back in 2006 – so much so that they maneuvered in the draft to obtain him, Timmins feels that patience is going to be required for those awaiting his chance.

“Whitey’s going to be more of a hard-nosed type of player in the league,” Timmins said. “He’s going to need some seasoning a the AHL level. There are a lot of good things to be worked on at the AHL level.”

White’s been a consistent offensive force at the WHL level, pacing the Calgary Hitmen with point totals of 53, 89, and 68 to date this year. He’s also consistently found his way to the penalty box with 121, 97, and 94 PIMs to date. Yet despite his hard-nosed, rugged play, White has stealthily avoided the injury bug, playing in 72 games the past two seasons and on pace for that total again this year.

Despite the offensive abilities, White projects to third or fourth-line duties – an energy forward with the ability to chip in where necessary. That said, Timmins hates to pigeonhole him right now. “It’s hard to say at this stage of his development where he’ll eventually be,” Timmins said. “But he’ll be in good hands [in Hamilton next year.]”

I was just thinking that too...not another latendresse. But then again, he seems to have more grit and plays a more physical game than latendresse. The way I see it, let's give this kid a year in Hamilton to see what he can do. Considering we've raped the bulldogs of a lot of its players, we need to replenish its roster.

White is a filler for Hamilton, he may get to the show with a lot of work over the next 3 years.
