Kostitsyn is coming off his first full season with the Canadiens. In 78 games, he scored 26 goals, added 27 assists and finished plus-15.
Oddly, the best season of Kostitsyn's pro career was his lowest paid. He made $612,000 in the last year of a three-year contract that paid him $942,000 for the 2005-'06 season, during which he played 12 games for the Canadiens and 64 in Hamilton; and $802,000 for '06-'07, when his split was 22 games in Montreal, 50 in the AHL.
After July 1, any team in the NHL can offer Kostistyn a contract. To keep him, Canadiens would have to match the offer. Were they to lose the RFA, Canadiens would be compensated with draft picks according to a formula based on the money Kostitsyn would make with his new team.
Corey Perry is in a similar situation with Anaheim. In the final year of a three-year contract that paid him $494,000 this season, Perry scored 29 goals, added 25 assists and was plus-12. He also had 108 PiM (AK46 had 29).
In Boston, impending RFA Chuck Kobasew, who scored 22 goals this season, signed a three year deal that will pay $2 million, $2.5 million and $2.5 million.
Martin Erat, who scored 23 goals, 34 assists and was minus-3 for Nashville, signed a seven-year extension that will pay him $4.5 million a season.
Milan Michalek, 24 goals, 31 assists, plus-19 (and knocked silly by Brenden Morrow in the playoffs) for San Jose, re-upped for $26 million over 6 years.
Alexander Semin, 26 goals, 16 assists and a team-worst minus-18 in Washington, signed a two-year deal that will pay him $4.2 million and $5 million.
Brilliant post yet again 'Grabbed the cup', and here I thought you couldn't be as stupid as that picture makes you appear to be :).
pfffft...
Honestly, I don't know what games you guys been watching in the playoffs -maybe at the pub with a few too many beers in yous. But to me only Koivu, Komisarek, Hamrlik and Price should be untouchable, the rest can go if they think they deserve a big pay increase. And AK is certainly not in the Carter or Perry league. If the market demands that he receives the same ballpark area money as them two, then whoever takes it isn't making a wise business decision IMO.
A contract similar to Michalek's will be what everyone will be comparing Andrei's too. Michalek has been in the league a couple more years and can be looked at as a more solid bet for production.
At least 4 years for Andrei. Average about 2-2.5 per year, back loaded so we'll have money for Sundin the next two years!
Back-loading makes no difference, the value of the average annual salary for the length of the contract is what counts against your cap, back loading is for when you try to trade someone, so when if you trade him to a team with lower cap tolerance, they might have a cap hit for more, but don't pay as much.
I agree with Sundin though.
I think AK will be singed for a few years and would be getting about 3-3.5 per season.
I really don't see why everyone is so excited about AK or him and his brother. I certainly wouldn't pay him 3 million. He had a good year because his line had a good year, when Kovalev didn't show up in the playoffs, we saw what AK was capable of without Kovalev.
Interesting. I think the Kostitsyn brothers are the definition of exciting. I'm not quite sure you caught the first game of the Boston series. I'm not quite sure you watched a lot of games last year for that matter. A three year deal averaging 3 million would be an excellent deal for both sides. (2.5, 3, and 3.5 in the third season) Another poster mentioned the fact that the brothers are rookies. That's a good point. Andrei is quick. Andrei is a sniper. Andrei can stickhandle the puck. Andrei even scored a number of goals by going to the front of the goal. That sounds like an exciting hockey player to me, one who just finished his first complete season. The organization took their time moving him through the system and they are being rewarded; Andrei will be rewarded as well, whether straight up or through arbitration. I don't care how it happens, but I'll be EXCITED as soon as it certain that he'll be wearing the CH next year.
You drink too much.
What are you talking about? Both brothers finished with 8 points, 4th and 5th overall on the team, with only Kovy, Plekanec and Koivu ahead of the two ROOKIES.
As for Kovy "not showing up", I don't know what you want from the guy, but he was 1 point off of a PPG playoff with 5 goals and 6 assists.
Also, your inference that the Kovy, Pleky, A. Kos line only came to play in the regular season is shot down when once again you take a look at who lead the Habs in points in the playoffs.
That was a good own!
This is only speculation on my part but what i have absorbed from browsing the other teams sport journals lately is that the entry draft may spurn on a lot of trades surprisingly and it won't just be for positioning in the draft and draft picks as most teams have noted that the weak free agent market this year and the asking price could have them looking to trades as their answer before the entry draft and if so i hope our management while negotiating contracts isn't asleep at the wheel again as multi tasking is not our strong point. Columbus for one probably will be trading one of it's two 1st round picks ( 6th and 19th ) to improve it's offense , notably a center , and the Oilers are looking for draft picks and have a number of young offensively minded forwards available as do Chicago and there are other teams threatening big shake ups like - Vancouver - San Jose - L.A. - Buffalo - Atlanta - Anaheim - Colorado - Tampa and the famous lafs so it could be interesting heading into the entry draft.
I think things are also in a bit of a holding pattern, because some people think Lightning will trade big time, others think they won't. It should be a very interesting off-season.
I think we're gonna see something around 17.5 million over 5 years.
i like the estimate, if he wants to bring his wife and kid here, he will want a long term deal, and Gainey will want to make it longer than 4 years, so he can really settle in.
That is the best guess I have heard.
I agree that it's a good guess, but they may have to throw another couple of mil on the ol BBQ for that contract length.
Anyway we look at it, AK Bars Kazan are already WAY over the salary cap that will be imposed by the new Kontinental League. They will have enough trouble as it is to trim their payroll and juggling to keep their star players. IMO they dont have room to offer 4 million contracts to new guys unless I'm missing something.
If Kostitsyn decides to sign with As Bar Kazan, then who's draft picks would the Habs be compensated with? Or, would they just get cash instead?
Habs would get nothing, same as they got nothing for Perezhogin last year. AK isn't under contract (or at least won't be July 1st), the RFA thing is internal rules to the NHL, not a matter of contract or law. Thus, other teams outside the NHL aren't subject to it. In fact, there's nothing to prevent "tampering" outside the NHL either - Russian teams could be giving him offers right now.
I thought the Ducks got picks from Edmonton, for signing Penner away from Anaheim last season? At any rate, I trust that Gainey is going to have more sense than to get into a bidding war with a bunch of Russian oil gazillionaires, who don't even wince at the thought of losing a couple of million, here and there. If Kostitsyn wants to go play in Russia because he's being offered 4 or 5 per then let him go, imo. That's a lot of money to be throwing around to a kid who, really, still has a hell of a lot to prove in the NHL.
Very glad to hear that Andrei would like to stay with our team. I'm sure that it was very reassuring for Mr. Gainey to hear, and I hope that when negotiations begin in earnest, they go well for both sides. I'd like to see him locked up for a long-term deal, but so doing would defy conventional practice for the organization. Then again, things are changing in this league.

Go Habs Go!
AK46 at $3, $3.25 and $3.5 million for a total of $9.75 million for 3 seasons sounds good, but that Milan Michalek deal is definitely the one setting the market price. Are these GMs just plain stupid, or do the players have incriminating photos?
Gilbert
$3 to $3.5 sounds very reasonable. Oh, and yes, these GM's are INCREDIBLY stupid. What was the point of the strike three years ago?
alright .. let me throw my hat in the ring ... i am sure I'll be wrong again .. 6 years 28M$ .. that will keep him in the Bleu Blanc Rouge until his late 20's .. and give him an opportunity to play for a bigger $$ down the road .. but guaranteed ... contracts to Michalek and Erat will have direct impact on the contracts of AK, Perry and Carter !
I think he'll stay, especially with Sergei looking to be such a big part of the team as well. I have a feeling they really enjoy playing on the same team. Neither one of them has hit their prime as players and they are both exciting to watch and having a huge impact on the team's success.
BIG QUESTION FOR ANYONE:
Is this now the official Habs Inside/Out site, or still a temporary site?
This is it. This is the official site.
not to worry. #46 is staying. Gainey will definitely sign him.
how about 15 to 17 million over 5 years?
might take a little more than that
i think gainey will offer 3, meehan will ask for 4 to 4.5 and they will meet somewhere in the middle. Hopefully its over 5 years or so.
