The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the Penguins have made signing Marian Hossa their top off-season priority.
Should he become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, Hossa could command $8 million a year and a contract of at least five years. The Canadiens and Boston Bruins are said to be among the likely suitors.
The Pittsburgh story suggests Hossa would take less money to play with a winning team. He made $7 million for 2007-'08, and the Penguins offer is rumoured to be $50 million over seven years.
That's quite a discount. Hossa would be leaving a lot of money on the table in return for the pleasure of playing with Sidney Crosby.
The Penguins have one less contract headache. They filed for salary arbitration with Marc-André Fleury, which prevents the goaltender, who was great in the playoffs, from becoming an RFA on July 1.
And Evgeni Malkin said this week he'd like to stay in Pittsburgh and would not expect Ovechkinesque $$$ in his new contract.
A couple of scary numbers in the story:
• Brooks Orpik wants a contract of at least five years and could get more than $4 million per. If that's true, what will Mike Komisarek be worth if he becomes a UFA next summer?
• The Columbus Blue Jackets want Ryan Malone and would pay him $5 million per over five years. That's an indicator of how rare and valuable power forwards are in the NHL.
Orpik isn't worth anywhere near $4M, and Malone isn't worth $5M. I'd love to see Malone in Montreal, but not for that kind of money -- I'd rather have Hossa for $8M.

Sooo muucchh moneeeyy.
Ex nihilo nihil fit
TSN had a report today that Malkin would be getting around $9 million per season in a 5 year deal.
If Malone would get the $5 mil., it would be Martin Lapointe all over again. He was waaaay overpaid by the Bruins. Sure, Malone is a character guy, but $25 mil for 5? That's steep. Maybe Pacioretty will be our Malone this season or next.

If the Columbus rumors are true, then they would have two excellent power forwards since they already have Rick Nash who is, at least according to some, the premiere power forward in the NHL.
Frankly, I'm a little worried by this tendency of winning teams to be able to sign free agents cheaper. That's not very conductive to levelling the playing field, since these already-good teams will get more bang for their salary cap buck. I realize that parity is not the stated goal of the salary cap, but it's one of the ways it was sold to the fans, and that's rapidly showing itself to be less-than-effective in that regard.
I'm also curious about what signing Hossa will do to the Pens' overall salary cap, discount or no. The Pens will not be a better team if they compromise their defensive corps to sign good forwards. This all but means Malone and Orpik will be out, and it will be interesting to see what it does for Malkin and Staal.

We all get hot and bothered about how awesome Komisarek is and then we start fretting about paying the salaries awesome players command... We have to identify the core and pay them what we need to. Komisaurus is gonna get paid what he's worth on the market. Now, is the market growing faster than the cap? Ah, that's another issue.
Smart general mangers though don't give in to "the market". Let say Orpiks gets that contract. If Komisarek uses that as part of his negotiations, smart general managers tell him, "Listen that signing was a dumb move by a general manager paying Orpiks way more than he's worth. You'll get what you're worth." Not taking anything away from Komisarek he will command a decent salary, but never give into "the market", thats what salaries keep rising.
