Market watch

In an interesting piece titled Five Questions About the Draft, Mathias Brunet of La Presse speculates the Canadiens could be looking to launch their centennial season with a bang by making a big draft-day trade.

Players said to available: Olli Jokinen, Marian Gaborik, Patrick Marleau, Mike Cammalleri.

Brunet also writes that Quebec prospect Nicolas Deschamps may not be available when the Canadiens exercise their 25th-overall first-round pick.

The Bruins, picking 16th, are said to like Deschamps.

Cristobal Huet's agent told the Washington Post negotiations with the Capitals have been "productive and well-intentioned."

Huet wants a three-year contract – which, Hello trade dealine, he never would have got from the Canadiens.

Meannwhile, the Marian Hossa soap opera has taken another turn.

Hossa's agent, Rich Winter, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that reports the Penguins have offered $50 million to $52 million over seven years are "way off base."

"The newspaper and television reports generated so far are
completely inaccurate," Winter told the Post-Gazette. "None of the information has come
from the principles involved in the discussions. Ray Shero and I have
not spoken with anyone about a contract, so I have no idea where the
information is coming from. There is not even one basic piece of
information from those reports that are true."

Hossa made $7 million this season. He wants to stay in Pittsburgh, but
a hometown discount that involves almost no raise is ridiculous –
especially when Boston probably will offer Hossa what Pierre McGuire
says could be Daniel Brière money to reunite Hossa with his old Atlanta
linemate, Marc Savard.

In Bob we Trust.

Apologies for the long post. I gathered "mock" picks from a variety of sites and sources for their predictions on the Habs at #25;

Montreal has a number of young defensemen in its pipeline, so look for the Habs to select a forward with the 25th pick. What they really need is a potential first-line center; ZAC DALPE, of the BCHL Penticton Vees, and AJ JENKS, of the Plymouth Whalers, should both be available and would be good selections.

Sumo - Thanks for the heads-up. Anybody but Aaron Ness in the first round. I know he has talent and have heard the comparisons to Rafalski but I hope that we don't land up drafting a 5'10", 165lb defenseman with our first pick. There still should be plenty of options at #25 besides this guy.

Looks like Dave Nonis has taken the senior advisor job with the Ducks. Another piece of the puzzle has been added which will insure the Ducks an experienced GM when Burke moves on to be GM at the Vatican. Nonis must have had this in mind all along and had interviews with other teams just to make it look good. What a charade.

TommyB's picture

LOL...charade is right.

This weekend at the draft table should look like a baseball game with all the "signals" being flashed between the Ducks table and the Leafs table. And hey, I wonder if Peddie will sit with Fletcher and do the ventriloquist act for us. That would be entertaining. We need something to keep us interested while we wait 24 picks for our turn.

24 Cups's picture

TommyB - LMAO. Well said.

The Original 24 Cups

Burke is busy going over his scouting reports tonight as he has 17 picks tomorrow night. Fletcher knows that when Burke takes off his shoe and starts slamming it on the table it's the signal for a time out so some of the other GMs should get in on the charade. When Burke gets up at the podium to announce the Ducks 1st pick #12 the Ottawa crowd should chant "Go laffs Go"..... laffs 1st round history.... http://scores.denverpost.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=denverpost&page=nhl/dr...

Lecavalier is about to sign a LIFE contract with TB. So please nobody ever talk again about him coming to Montreal! He will spend the rest of his playing days in TB!

Good for him, and it is the smart thing for to do for family, if this is true. I hope so for him. Of course, if you play hockey (very) seriously, I am not so sure that the rules apply and that family counts in decision-making beyond the love you make. You play because you just play and you think you can.... all else is faded. I hope 4 has done this, though I would obviously rather him play for us. 4's are good, like Beliveau and Orr, and Guy turned 4 to 10 which is on my jersey.....

From TSN:

"With unrestricted free agency beginning on July 1, players right's are being offered up to give teams exclusive negotiating privileges for more than a week.

"Murray confirmed Thursday that he tried to do that with veteran defenceman Wade Redden, but had no takers."

Maguire just did a mock draft on TSN and had the Habs selecting Deschamps.

Just listened to the Bob Gainey interview. 15 minutes of saying absolutely NOTHING! Gainey talks in circles, but never tips his hat. Maybe it's because he never does anything. He could end up with a perfect record: 5 years without signing a scorer. Some things never change!

Habhopeful's picture

Ya I'm pissed he didn't call me or let me know his plans either!!!.*sigh*

"If I wanted to hear from an ass, I would fart..."

G-Man's picture

I guess Kovalev is chopped liver. NHL exec of the year and Carbo an Adams finalist, but our management sucks! Go cheer Burke on.

Gilbert

You must forgive BG for not letting YOU in on what him and the organization are planning to do tomorrow.

I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!!

The Teacher's picture

Why SHOULD he tip his hand?

Well the night before the draft. All the seeds have been planted and it's time to make sure they are fertilized though some may be transplanted but those that can't be transplanted may have to be slept on and digested before action is taken at 19:00 or later tomorrow night. Over a beer or two another brainwave may pop up and upset the whole apple cart. The New NHL.

RDS is reporting that Lecavalier is "this" close to re-signing long term with Tampa. Talks have been progressing rapidly in the last few days. Apparently it would be for the rest of his pro career. *sigh*

sidhu's picture

I guess that helps resolve the Malkin vs. Vinny debate from yesterday

Chuck's picture

If he doesn't want to be in Montreal, then I don't want him.

"Defenceman Brian Campbell will be going to the unrestricted free agent market.... Campbell has informed the Sharks he won't be back."

Now that's interesting and surprising as Wilson was determined to sign him , I'll guess he's going after Redden now. It seems all the agents are suggesting to their clients to play hardball and see what's out there.

Kevin's picture

Anyone read about Bettman threatning to kick MSG out of the NHL? Absolutely ridiculous. When will this guy finally be fired??????

The Canadian teams + NYR should leave the league and start their own... let's see how the NHL would do then...

The Teacher's picture

Do you know the reason?

Because the MSG wants to cheat.

I hate Buttman as much as anyone else..but....
