Hard to believe some posters here would actually entertain the idea of bringing Tucker back to Montreal. Then again, I guess it is not so hard to believe, given some of the posters here on H I/O. Tucker has no usefulness at all for the Habs...nada! Tell me who he could replace in our current lineup. Tucker is a jackass! A sideshow! Some go so far as to compare him to Avery...well, in a sense, they're right. Avery is a jackass too!
Are there any more Leaf castoffs you guys think would be a good fit on the Habs? What about Gary Roberts, maybe we should make a play for him too, eh? If you guys think these players are so good maybe you should be rooting for the Maple Leafs...maybe deep down, you are. Sometimes I really have to wonder why I come here. Maybe it's for the entertainment...the slapstick humour. My chuckle of the day. Sometimes that chuckle of the day induces a wee bit of bile from laughing so hard.
How about the woman-face boy, Wellwood? Should we go after him too? The Laffs would like to rid themselves of Blake, what about him too? Hey, should we try and get Raycroft as a backup goalie?
Excuse me...I have to go puke now.

Any man that gives Theodore 4mil should be fired on the spot. He's never won a game in the 2nd round of the playoffs (0 for 14 or 15)

No kidding, but someone probably will, and that is utterly pathetic.

And another piece of the puzzle will be locked in. Before last season I thought we were going in the right direction. Didn't think we would be that good, but I thought we had a decent chance to make the playoffs, where anything can happen. We are nowhere near the beginning of the next season and our team has already significantly improved with Tanguay added.
I hope the Sundin deal goes through... But even if it doesn't? It wasn't because of a lack of an effort. What more can we do?
If we sign him... Great!
If we don't... We still have until the trade deadline to (maybe) make things happen. I am just glad Gainey is making the big decisions for us and not selling out the future in any deal that is too lopsided.
Submitted by krob1000 on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 13:09.
I would like to see us pick up a significant player now while it only costs dollars. I was all for landing Hossa last year because the East was so wide open and all it takes is a hot goalie to win a series(you folks know what I mean). The cost for players is higher at the deadline in the sense that it only costs money to pick them up now. I know that everything is prorated come deadline day but you still usually have to forfeit roster players of significance to be a player because of the urgency and because by that point the pretenders and contenders have usually separated themselves. That being said we are deep in defensive prospects and do have some wiggle room if that situation should arise.
It would be preferred though if we could have someone to gel with the team for the entire season and provide insurance should we suffer any injuries of significance. Mats is the man we could use the most and I still have my fingers crossed but should we lose him there are other viable options out there. He justs fits in so many ways though. I think he could really come to like winning in Montreal and I know Montreal would come to like him in a hurry as well. Mats is the best thing for us and Gainey recognizes that so people who insist we shouldn't acquire him obviously know far more than the good Bob himself. We may not get him and I still say it's about 50/50 but regardless of how it plays out we can rest assured knowing Gainey is trying hard to put the right pieces together.

the hockey news ranked the top 50 free agents, they also put what the projected salary would be
6. mats sundin, projected salary: 6mil
13. mark streit, 3.75mil
26. andrei kostitsyn, 2.5mil
2.5 million for ak would be good
so far the guys who have signed that are in the top 50: 1. shea weber, 12. dan ellis and 21. chris kelly all signed for less then what was projected
also 16. cristobal huet, 4.8mil
42. jose theodore, 4mil
i'd pass on those two guys

Submitted by SmartDog on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 11:39.
6 mil would be the RIGHT ammount for Sundin. But he'll get more since he's a hot ticket.
I was projecting AK around 3. Hope that's right.... 4 mil for Jose? c'mon. Huet might be worth 4.8 though. The numbers don't lie. And I'd pass on Streit regardless. He's got lots of positivies but too much negative for my tastes.

When you read things like that you have to doubt the credibility of the whole article. They also said 2.5 million for Andrei Kost.... so Theo is worth MORE?? Let's see, if any GM in the league had their pick between Theo and AK46, how many would choose Theo. None.

hey they have ak46 ranked befoe theodore (so thn would want ak before theo) but theo being a ufa he will once again be looking for the biggest offer he can get, i have no doubt that he wont be atleast over 3.5. on the other hand ak46 wants to stay with montreal and will not be asking to break the bank.
the projected salary is what they think these players will get, the rank shows who they would go after first, as for goalies ellis, huet and fleury are ahead of him. and they give ufa's better ranks b/c they are free

Failing grade for that suggestion, Habs-Professor. Tucker is definetly on the down side of his career - unproductive, and injury prone.
Why do you think the Leafs would let him go, given that they weren't good enough to make the playoffs, have no one on the farm to bring up, no draft choices that will make an immediate impact, and they must know trying to attract free agents to a reclaimation project would be difficult. All this speaks volumes to how little Tucker has to offer.

Submitted by habsfor25 on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 11:31.
tucker is just another begin

Submitted by HAB-PROFESSOR on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 11:18.
the main reason he's been let go is his long term salary and the fact they are rebuilding....you don't rebuild by having a "tucker" type around, he is a character piece thats added once the nucleus is intact. Thats why he would fill a role with Montreal, he can split the season with Begin who never lasts 82 games...thats the rationale. We are looking for 2-3 key pieces....Tucker is another Avery... but smarter

Submitted by SmartDog on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 11:47.
Dunno about smarter. I think Avery is both bigger and more talented.

What was so great about his time in MTL?
He has some heart and grit but he also doesn't have the body to back it up...(injury riddle career) He's smaller than Saku for peat sake and would be officially the smallest hab... just what we need a little Napoleon ELF running around drawing penalties... thanks but no thanks!
His best days in Montreal consist of Boullion knocking him out.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gskY6Oar6Q and Kovalev laying him out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khywEqMgtUI

It was like it was a set play, swooping around Souray using him as a pick to line him up and instead of scoring in an already 6-2 blow out, got even for the attempted Tucker blindside but still cought with a stick to the face... only to answer the return punishment level 10 fold on the little troll..

Submitted by HAB-PROFESSOR on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 11:09.
what was great about Tucker is the fire the kid has in his eyes, that attitude has its place on a teams 4th line.
don't forget with the Habs he was a 4th liner (like Kilger)...then when shipped to Toronto he became a 1st liner, but thats expected based on the different systems and talent levels of the two teams.
Tucker on the 4th line, deep into a playoff series will add value. you can't deny that.

CHIP should be on the 3rd line.

You tend to overvalue Chipper's value.
I think you have the right idea, just the wrong player, in Tucker...
maybe for a 500k flyer, an invitation to training camp..that's about it. We don't need a guy who gets penalties for stupidities.

Submitted by SmartDog on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 11:32.
Hey Teach - I'm curious about the Chipper comment. I thought he was great. For a rookie, seemed like a pretty good shut-down guy, was strong in plus-minus, worked hard, played every single shift like he meant it.
I was surprised they sent him down - what's the knock on him?

I don't think our coach would stand for stupid penalties...tucker wouldn't see the ice if that was his game, and he's not the type to get lazy and start hooking (most penalized infraction). but he can provide a BEGIN type spark and don't forget he NOW HAS SOMETHING TO PROVE...isn't that the same mandate for the Habs 2009.
as for Chip, 3rd line easy....he is another Bob Gainey, and this year he won't go back to the dogs.

I dunno about the Bob G comment... but hopefully his maturity as a player is on a steady incline. I think people (not anyone HERE of course) forget that not everyone hits the ice at 19 or 20 and makes a spash. Some guys have the goods but need to mature, build confidence or size, etc. Hope that Chipchura is one of those.

Just another reason to love this kid. Here's hoping they lock him up for at least 3 seasons.

Submitted by The Teacher on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 10:27.
3 would probably be what he signs for. It would bring him to his UFA season as well as his brothers RFA season.
LOL, Kyle is on the Leafs side, if you look you can see a blue bar that denotes the separation of the two benches.

Submitted by Chorske on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 16:16.

AK46 is going to be a stud, so this is welcome news. Anything under $4.0m will make me happy in today's market.

Submitted by TommyB on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 09:36.
This article brings a huge smile to my face, more than any Sundin signing announcement could bring. It sure is nice to read that a player wants to re-sign with the Habs regardless of what other teams may possibly offer. We don't see that often enough. Some posters on here take the position that it's because of little brother, and I have no doubt that is a part of the reason, but I think it is only a small part. AK has found a home in North America that he feels he fits into, and has found a team that he fits into. Players, both currently on the Habs roster and those who might envision themselves on the Habs roster, are seeing this team for what it is....an up and coming team to be reckoned with.

Submitted by The Teacher on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 09:45.
The fact that we drafted him 10th in spite of the epilepsy concerns, that we allowed him to develop at his own pace surely helped the cause. Seems he understands what it means to play for an organization that treats their players well. Not to mention that we chose him instead of the beloved Getzlaf ;)
Yet another way that Gainey is the man.
don't we just love the direction we're heading in :)
I know I sure do.

Submitted by SmartDog on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 09:53.
Great posts TommyB, Teach!
THIS is what happens to good hockey clubs - they treat their players well and build an atmosphere that people don't want to leave. It's what Detroit has and what Montreal is getting back... thank you Bob.
Hats off to AK for not "swinging for the fences", though I suspect he's got a nice payday. As a young guy still he doesn't need the pressure and it's a good sign of attitude.
What's Complicated?
I wonder what the 'complex' part was? Length of contract? Trade restrictions? A "must make more than my little brother" clause. :)

Maybe whether the contract is "front-loaded" or "back-loaded", or maybe performance clauses. The good thing is that it will get done, and that it looks as if everyone, agent included, will be satisfied.

Amazing news. . .
If we can get him for 3.75M or the like that extra million I was counting on could be put to good use for Shanahan, Selanne, Sundin, Rolston, or other late in career folks that cost only money, not current/future talent and not at the expense of making room for Higgins, Komisarek, and Pleks following the season.

Been out of the hospital for 9 days and although I have to wear a mini-collar for 5 more weeks, I'll take it over the alternative.

I don't limp anymore and have regained sensations for the most part, except in my left leg. I can also take things out of my pocket without having everything come out, including the pocket now. The pain is mostly gone in my groin area as well. Just feel a twinge on occasion. They operated through the front of my neck, not the back. Are you getting it done on your c-5 also?

Speaking of RFAs like AK46, I wonder if any other teams will take the gutless Kevin Lowe route and make offer sheets to unsigned young players such as: Perry, Green, Bernier, Bouchard, Pavelski, Wolski, Pitanen, O'Sullivan, Vermette, and Meszaros. I'll tell you one thing - the DePietro contract is starting to look like a stroke of genius right now. (Of course, that's assuming he continues to develop into a decent NHL goalie). $4.5 mil a year doesn't buy what it used to in the new NHL. If AK46 is smart, he'll sign a two year deal and then he can join his brother Sergei at the end of his entry level contract and break the bank. If they both play well between now and then, they will be in a position to hold out for a mega package deal, whether it be in the NHL or the Continental League.

pat - I figured the term gutless would get a response. He's signed Penner (and indirectly Vanek) because he wasn't able to build a team the traditional way. That one action alone has lead to the out of control escalation of the salary structure in the NHL. He basically made every quality RFA into an UFA after just three short years of NHL playing time. I know that most of the other GMs need protection from themselves, but Lowe is the main man when it comes ruining everything that was gained from the lockout.
Just one man's viewpoint.

And just for the record, Kovalev is fantastic, but in a Cap world which veterans you keep and which ones you deal can make or break your success. Kovy is at one end of his career, AK46 at the other.
And still for some reason can't get the picture of Theodore taking tickets at a Celine Dionne concert out of my head.

That maybe true if we were in a rebuilding stage, not in the hunt for a Cup... We're not in a game of who can field the cheapest team, or how much we can save Gillette. There isn't another winger, as skilled as Kovalev that we could replace him with at the money he makes. Especially in the Market.

Kovalev is very very skilled no doubt but, he is still a detraction and a me first kind of guy who doesn't always come to play. He also hasn't strung two good seasons together very often. In a career type year he still only scored 35 goals, AK46 will do better than that this year. I think in a trade we could get a winger or center to replace his offense and provide more grit and team first attitude. Sure less skill but someone who applies it more consistently.

The formatting Looked a little funky for a bit, so it looked as if you were posting under my post and the Same with SmartDogs looked like you were posting under yours.... the gitch seems to have cleared up...

Yeah, I know, it tends to do that and then clear itself up later.
No explanation needed. Just surprised you think my memory is that funky ;)

Good name. Good post. Very brave, and though I'd rather see Kovy follow up with another strong year, I can't totally disagree.

Thanks. I wonder if getting Tanguay was a precursor to a Kovalev deal... all tied in with getting a big center. You know... Bob giving himself some flexibility.

That's the wavelength I'm on.

In a trade, there would be. If we get another impact player, Kovy could be expendable.

"If they both play well between now and then, they will be in a position to hold out for a mega package deal, whether it be in the NHL or the Continental League."
Ease up on the doomsday scenarios would ya!

Teach - which reminds me, Dr. Strangelove is one of the greatest movies of all time. It may not be well known by your generation but it is a classic. It's in b&w and still holds up to this day, especially in light of the Bush years that the US has just suffered through.
Having said that, I certainly don't see myself in that role on this site, rather Dr. Reality:-)
