Salary cap bumped again: up to $56.7 million

posted by Dave Stubbs at 14h45 EST on Jun 26

The NHL and the NHLPA announced today that the team payroll range established for the 2008-09 league year, pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, provides for a lower limit of $40.7 million, an adjusted midpoint of $48.7 million and an upper limit of $56.7 million.

This represents a 6.4 per cent increase from last season's cap, and the fourth straight year the cap has been bumped up.

The maximum a team can pay a player in the season to come is $11.34 million.

And for this fiscal responsibility we lost a year to a lockout.

In 2005-06, the first year after the lockout, the salary cap was $39 million.

The Canadiens cap hit for 2008-'09 stands at about $44 million – pending new contracts for restricted free agents Andrei Kostitsyn, Jaroslav Halak, Josh Gorges and Ryan O'Byrne – plus possible UFAs Mats Sundin, Michael Ryder and Mark Streit.

Forward Maxim Trunev was the third players selected in the CHA's draft of European players. Taken in the fifth round, 138th overall, during the NHL draft last weekend, Trunev was picked by the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL.

The Canadiens would like Trunev to duplicate Sergei Kostitsyn's career path by playing major junior hockey in Canada. The younger Kostitsyn, drafted by the Canadiens in the seventh round, 200th overall in 2005, left Belarus to play for the PHL's London Knights.

Nikita Filatov, a first-round choice (sixth overall) by Columbus, was the first European selected, by the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL

Talks have broken down with the Colorado Avalanche and José Theodore will test he UFA waters next week.

"I would say we are going to July 1," Theodore's agent, Don Meehan told the Denver Post. "There's a chance we could still negotiate with (the Avalanche) after that, but right now it's looking like we're going to July 1."

the cap minimum is now higher than the maximum cap was just 3 years ago. It won't be long before the nhl once again becomes a 2 tier league.

If you want the cap to go down, stop buying tickets at grossly inflated prices.

but then again, what does the wealthy care? They'll be able to afford the tickets no matter what. Typical bullcrap the world over.

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

SmartDog's picture

Who cares if the cap goes down? All that would do is help the owners. I don't even care if some bum makes 5 mill as long as he's not on my team. It's the same problem for all GM's... they need to wrap their heads around it and not just throw hail mary dollars at players but be very cautious and clever with their resources.

Do I want cheaper tickets? Sure But it's hard enough to get a good ticket in Montreal as it is. Face it, we need to move the franchise south - and us with it!

I still can't find that other dog photo I liked (the one that actually DID look smart) but found some other pretty good ones.

Do I keep this disturbing looking avatar or change?

Here's Gilmour giving Sundin a bit of a sales pitch.
Looks like he's frustrating everyone.

Chuck's picture

"...said Fletcher, who also conveyed a one-year contract offer to Sundin last weekend in the neighbourhood of US$7 million."

I thought that we had exclusive negotiating rights as of the draft, which was last Friday. So then why was Fletcher able to make an offer to Sundin over the weekend?

"Gilmour was the face of the Leafs when he helped revitalize the franchise in the early 1990s. Seeing him in a Habs uniform a decade later was hard to take for some friends and family. But not everyone, Gilmour said.

"My sister's husband Barry said to me once, 'I don't like the Leafs that much,"' Gilmour recalled. "I said 'What? You've been cheering for them all these years.' He says, 'Well, you were on the team, that's why.' But I've been a closet Habs fan my whole life.'

"So there's a lot of closet Habs fans that came out of the woodwork that I didn't know about when I was playing there. Especially since I'm from Kingston.""

This was the best part

:)

The Canada comment was good too. He says of Sundin that "he could spend his whole career in Canada" when he himself drifted around through US cities.

As much as Sundin is a great asset - give me Dougie any day.

Looking around the league I noticed that all the other teams are talking about their development camp, showing profiles of young players etc. Have we decided to forgo a dev. camp since we know that all we need is Mats?

It appears we have already spent $44mm. Where did all the money go? I thought we were below that.

According to THN Scott Niedermayer will be back for the final year of his contract and will have Brian Burke scrambling to adjust his cap so he'll be able to sign Corey Perry..... http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/16834-Ducks-defenceman-Scott-Niede...

moser17's picture

Sweet! Now we can finally afford Vinny!!! Maybe he'll come to Montreal! Maybe he'll really really come to play! Maybe his new contract is all a media blind! I'll never stop believing!!

if this post gets any attention at all, then for my next trick I'm going to try to goad SmartDog into a debate about Ryder.

Not only Vinny but Ovechkin too, Since Ovechkin apparently would love to play for Montreal (and Toronto too and 27 other teams too. I think we can do it.

Connecticut Man1's picture

They would have to toss in Stamkos too...

edit: OOPS was meant to be in reply smartdog's reply...
