Big day for AK46?

Agent Don Meehan told Marc de Foy of the Journal du Montréal he's in "active" negotiations and has four or five meetings with the Canadiens to discuss a new contract for Andrei Kostitsyn.

They'll talk again today.

Is there reason to believe an agreement is imminent?

"Not yet," Meehan told de Foy. "We'll see what Friday has in store for us."

If Kostitsyn is not signed by Tuesday, he becomes a restricted free agent. Should another team offer him huge money – a distinct possibility in the wacky, wonderful NHL (see VANEK, Thomas and PENNER, Dustin) – the Canadiens would have the right to match the offer or obtain draft choices as compensation.

From Larry Brooks of the New York Post, who reports today the Russian Super league has offered Jaromir Jagr a cool $35 million for the next three of his declining years:

Multiple sources have told The Post that Mats Sundin will be the
Rangers' No. 1 target when the free agent market opens Tuesday at noon

Sean Avery eight times a season?

The Toronto Sun reports the NHL's Pestmaster-General may consider signing with the Leafs if the price is right:

" ... money is the new motivation, with the unrestricted free agent and the Rangers as much as $1 million US apart in talks during the past season and now near an impasse. Avery had made $1.9 million and though he loves the Big Apple limelight, he currently is an intern at Vogue magazine and likely will make New York his permanent residence, the source said he'd be willing to take his on-ice act here, if it meant a big pay day.

Last season Avery, a native of Pickering, just outside Toronto, said "I don't enjoy hockey-obsessed Canadians. The (US-Canadian dollar) exchange is not very good right now. And it's going to cost me a lot of money in tickets for people I don't even like."

There's also some buzz in Toronto that Gary Roberts (who is not working at Vogue this summer) may be on his way back to the Leafs – which would help Don Cherry get over the departure of Darcy Tucker.

Ouch..."fags", is sure to be flagged. Although our relationship with the U.S. has been strained from day one of the Bush admin( I knew we were in trouble when he went to visit V.Fox for his first state visit), I don't think it's cool to paint them all with the same brush. And I have alot of US friends and their good people, just like you and Me.

Nice offer for Jagr..Just remember the protection money you have to give the mafia to keep your relatives alive! You're safe till you stop earning. Then you hope they have another job for you that doesnt involve swimming with concrete.

Forgetting Jagr for a minute but your post reminded me of just how sweet a player JC was - man could he handle the puck. Love your photo of his hockey card. He was never given the credit that he was due.

Thanks MikeL for the link to the article on Rolston. Too bad he isn´t a centre. He sounds good, but does he fit with our needs? So where does he fit in the lineup?

Sundin will sign with us, I'm thinking 3 year 21-24 mill.

SmartDog's picture

Why would a guy considering retirement lock in for 3 years?

the real vinnydj's picture

Why would a guy retire and come back half way into the season? How many years in a row has Gary Roberts contemplated retirement? He is still playing isn't he?

Hockey players like to surprise people so that is my prediction and I am sticking to it.

SmartDog's picture

Fair enough. But I think Sundin's a cautious one. Guess we'll see soon enough.

That's high... but then again, Kovy won't be resigned after this year so it frees up 4.5. Dandy also won't as well as Bouillon so there's another 3.5, and presto! Cap Room!

MikeL's picture

Plus the ever-rising cap.

coutNY's picture

The rising cap seems to be washed out by the ever rising player salary expectations.

Don't know how people think Burke is a good GM, what a mess he has over there. He is lucky Lowe took Penner from him last year or else it would be even more of a disaster. The guy is a complete yard sale if you ask me, and I hope he goes to Toronto to fix things up (when I say fix I mean the total opposite) He may know talent when he sees it but his math is pretty bad if you ask me.

coutNY's picture

I don't totally think Burke's an idiot, and if you were to have suggested that last year people would have laughed at you. Not to say I think he is a Genius by any means.... to be clear.

I think the situation of winning a Cup, having some elite talent on D & F's being wishy-washy about their future, have to extend an excellant goalie to a long term deal, and having some top talented prospects mature demanding top dollar is a tough situation to manage in Salary Cap era.

Some of these same issues Gainey would have to deal with if Montreal were to win the Cup this up-in-coming years. If they aquired an expensive UFA. With prospects like Komi, Pleks, Higgins Tanguay, as young talent expecting raises, while having vetrans Koivu and Kovalev, almost out respect looking to finish out their careers with a little coin in there pockets. That's just next year, which is looking pretty scary... Carey due the following year.

I dont know, I consider him one of the better GM's in the league...his teams are always pretty tough to play against. The Canucks owe pretty much all their offense to him (Sedins), and he brought in Pronger to put the Ducks over the top in what has turned out to be a pretty good trade for the Ducks. Anyway, this move to buy out Bertuzzi saves them from moving Schneider, which is what everyone expected them to do.

Lou was probably the best GM in hockey before the Cap Era, thats really handcuffed him now. I don't know about the best GM, but Detroit has the best management team in the NHL. Montreal is probably 2nd best in my eyes. The way the team has been built from within is a la Red Wings.

Brain Burke as a GM is so overrated.
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

SmartDog's picture

CORRECTION!

Sorry folks - I meant to write Pat Quinn just below NOT Pat Burns. Thanks Teach. And I know even THAT will piss some people off - Quinn had a very good record.. I know he was good, just IMHO overrated - never liked the guy, he had talent under him and tons of cash but still couldnt' bring home the cup.

SmartDog's picture

He is to GM's what Pat Burns was to coaches. A big blowhard who sounds convincing because unlimited (and ridiculous) self assurance in the way he talks. But doesn't have half the talent to back it up.

Burke's Ducks won largely because of Murray who preceded him. I think he's quite brilliant even if he creeps me out...with his little twitches and lisp he reminds me of an Austin Powers nemesis.... I'm glad I don't have to negotiate with him. I couldn't keep a straight face. I'd be like: "Hey Brian, I will trade you this player for ONE MILLLLLLION DOLLARS!!!" LOL

I hope so both sound intreging to me... they say both display Orpik or Komi like qualities; aggitating and possessing a mean streak, not Dirty, but Gritty.

Look for him to be picked up in Toronto in advance of Burke's arrival. :)
