Flyers raise the bar for Habs' Kostitsyn

posted by Kevin Mio at 10h36 EST on Jun 28

The Gazette's Pat Hickey writes that the Philadelphia Flyers might have just raised the asking price of Canadiens' Andrei Kostitsyn after the Flyers re-signed Jeff Carter to a three-year, $15-million deal.

Carter, a centre, had 29 goals and 24 assists last season and was a plus-6, while Kostitsyn had 26 goals and 27 assists and was plus-15.

Both players were drafted in 2003 - Kostitsyn was one selection ahead of Carter at No. 10 overall. The big difference between them is that Carter has a longer track record in the NHL. He has played three full seasons - twice as long as Kostitsyn.

Hickey also writes about the team's talks with Mats Sundin and the dismantling of the Maple Leafs by Cliff Fletcher. To read that, click here.

This came from the Eklund site. Geez, I hope this isn't the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch type 'eenie-meenie minee moe' journalism. On the Sundin Front.... From a source, "Tomorrow is the key day." Another source told me something that was very encouraging if you are a Habs fan... "Talking to a Swedish friend of Mats he is starting to get excited about the possibility of playing in Montreal. His talks with Gainey have left him 'Blown away' by the man's professionalism and integrity. And Mats has even said he thinks Montreal would be a wonderful city to play in. Mats friend really believes that it is Montreal or retirement. And that the second Mats decides to make a go of it a 2-year deal will get done." "The Canadiens don't want Mats to do something he doesn't want to do. The Habs are fine saying, 'give us a try we know you will like it.'" In other words, if Mats wants another year it can be negotiated during the season if need be. Another source told me that Koivu may be playing a role as well, and also as a source said: "Saku is so respected by the Scandinavian Hockey Community that it is hard to imagine Mats hasn't contacted him." Compensation continues to be sketchy and there are some teams that are upset with the fact that the compensation has not been stated publicly yet. I continue to hear Grabovsky's name being mentioned. I don't believe the Higgins rumours for a second..

Eklund's sources aren't from earth. ------------------------------------------------------------ If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

Has anyone heard what the story is on Ryder, Any offers, no offers,Whats the word around Montreal. I also dont think Sundin will play for the habs, because I think he is only pushing his value up in Toronto. And Fletcher is helping by offering 7 mill.Keep on track with YOUTH.

I've heard Vancouver is interested. ------------------------------------------------------------ If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

The Teacher's picture
Ryder is bye bye. Sundin isn't going back to T.O. IMO.

The Teacher's picture
Ahhh, these Laugh fans. Three years ago they were falling over themselves to sign McCabe for whatever he wanted even though we all knew he sucked. Now they all want to get rid of him because they finally figured out that fact and are crapping all over him. Thank god I'm not a fan of that putrid organization. I hope he sticks it to them any way he can. Don't void the NTC Bryan, stay in your loved T.O. with those oh so fickle fans. Toronto is hockey Central? PUHHHH-LEEEEASSSSEEEEE. Maybe if management wasn't so dumb in the first place!

Theodore

The Teacher's picture
Your point? I'm not one who wanted him signed anyways, and he also didn't have a NTC. That's a big difference.

Tampa Bay -doormats? This past year was the first time in 7 years they didnt make the playoffs...

Gary Roberts can fit in Tampa. I wish we could have Roberts. He's tough and the kind of guy people listen to. Those kind of guys are needed, Therrien really screwed up when he benched him in the finals.

The title should read "Tucker's agent chases Devils"... Since nobody in the Devil's management camp was even sourced, anon or not, in that story.

;) True enough

Because of the cap, something that I think we will increasingly see during this time of year are the 'domino' trades. Trades that are made to either financially accommodate or rationalize rosters in response to Free Agent signings. What's available could be fairly fluid as teams compete for certain FA's. It makes predicting what rosters will look like in September very tricky. I have said this before but I will say it again, we may be surprised what opportunities present themselves if Sundin doesn't sign with us before Tuesday. With Gainey at the helm for this complex time of year we couldn't be in better hands. I for one feel confident that no matter how things unfold we will be in the best situation possible, given all the factors in play, when the dust settles. Just my humble opinion... or two cents.

Jagr unlikely to return to the Rangers ... By Larry Brooks ... New York Post ..... http://www.nypost.com/seven/06282008/sports/rangers/jaromir_unlikely_to_...

damn...there goes sundin.ffs.

SmartDog's picture
Call me crazy - I think they might be better off without him. I like Jagr, but there's enough talent there that the team might shine with some strategic upgrades in other areas. Or of course with Sundin... whatever. ~Listen to the smart dog!

ugggg, that is not great news for us...

Hey Sign - nice initiative! Way to take action T-Roy: I know, I know... PS: Everybody can rest easy worrying about the Laffs 'cause Cliff has a PLAN!!! ~Listen to the smart dog!

T-roy West's picture
Probably old news but Tampa has acquired exclusive negotation rights to Malone and Roberts.

SignSundin's picture
Why would they want an old guy like Roberts? To give them some leadership? I don't know, just does not seem like an ideal fit for tampa.

Here's the link: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=241905&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl Great that the lightning new ownership is being aggressive. Gotta hand it to them - and for their final draft pick. I'm impressed. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Exit716's picture
Tampa can't draft worth a crap. So to them draft picks are pretty much useless. Unless these grandstanding showoffs improve their drafting and development they'll be doormats forever, More power to them though. I just hope they don't continue to suck money out of Montreal through revenue sharing

SmartDog's picture
I don't know about that, but I was referring to their drafting David Carle - a kid who should have gone up in the earlier part of the draft but had recently found out he has a heart condition and will never play in the NHL. Classy move. ~Listen to the smart dog!

The Teacher's picture
Very classy move, a great entry for Oren Koules. I just hope he has as much money as he says he does, lol.

SmartDog's picture
Jeez, be careful what you say or some fool on here is going to be thinking that Tampa will go bust and Vinny is going to need a new home! lol ~Listen to the smart dog!

Exit716's picture
I'm talking about their record overall, regardless of whether they drafted the Carle kid. Nice move for sure, but if you look at their overall record since coming into the league in terms of drafting and developing their own players it's absolutely pathetic. I just hope Gillet makes sure Timmins is happy and well compensated for his work.

T-roy West's picture
Thanks for posting the link. Wow, did you take a strip off Hickey. Take it easy on Hickey, pitbull, LOL. Remember he feeds us.

Connecticut Man1's picture
Realistically... We feed them. If we don't come here then the site would lose those mattress ads on the sidebar there. >>> Not to mention the fact that the news the journalists give us their opinions on is usually linked out in the comments sections before they get around to it. I am not discounting what the Blog owners do here, considering they are late to the party here because of deadlines at their day jobs :) but, like any truly viable Blog community, the best stuff is usually in comments. They provide the venue, rules and, generally, set the tone and direction of the site but we provide the clicks and comments that make the site what it is.

SmartDog's picture
Well stated. This is the new media world, where the inmates DO run the asylum because the wardens know there are lots of other asylums if we don't like this one. But we do - and they're pretty good wardens. I've never clicked an ad here yet though. :) ~Listen to the smart dog!

Connecticut Man1's picture
I doubt they get paid on "click-throughs" for that. More likely on "per thousand imprints" OR monthly. Likely enough money to pay for the bandwidth we use here while they send us through on links to their "associated" newspapers that might make a little more profit on their adds. (Just guessing at their "business model" here. Maybe they have a few bucks leftover for the authors to buy some skittles and beers each month? lol) I need a new mattress but I don't think Matelas Bonheur will deliver to Connecticut anyways. :)

habs-13's picture
Everybody just calm down. Kostitsyn's agent has said that Andrei is happy and wants to stay in Montreal. Also saying that Andrei doesn't expect to break the bank and that he realizes that experience is also considered when talking contracts and knows that Andrei's salary can't be based only on one full NHL season.

SmartDog's picture
I am calm. I am just disgusted. LOL I think "disappointed" would have been a better word. Journalists have a ton of power to shape mindsets - more than you think. I think this is skewed because it misses and important fact. (see below if you want a detailed explanation). But I don't want to dwell... just saying what I think. I'm happy AK is going to stay - and would like to see the contract done! ~Listen to the smart dog!

SmartDog's picture
I am disgusted. This is irresponsible journalism by Pat Hickey. At a time when salaries are rising out of control, this will only serve to stir the pot in the Kostitsyn camp and make life a little bit more difficult for BG and our Habs. It's factually incorrect in that it leaves out a HUGE difference. Carter was not playing on the team's best line, with Kovalev on the other wing. He probably had less ice time, certainly had less support... so he did more with less. ~Listen to the smart dog!

ebk's picture
can you please explain how Pat Hickey's article is irresponsible journalism?

SmartDog's picture
Hickey says: "The big difference between them is that Carter has a longer track record in the NHL. He has played three full seasons - twice as long as Kostitsyn." Carter playing on the 3rd line is a MUCH bigger difference. Especially since you could argue the 'experience' difference either way. All this does is make it sound like if AK doesn't get a similar payday he's missing out. Whether you agree with me or not - I was a journalist, and this is the kind of thing we talked a lot about in J-school (my degree by the way, is a BJ.... I don't put that on my business card!). It's the kind of things journalists do to make a story better - if he pointed out that the situation is really different because AK was playing with the other AK on one of the leagues best lines, while Carter was playing with plunkers, the story wouldn't have much traction as a story. So he leaves that out. No offense to Pat, who does a lot of good. But I have to call a spade a spade. Thanks for asking for clarification. ~Listen to the smart dog!

ebk's picture
you make a pretty flimsy case for the accusation you threw out there.

SmartDog's picture
What can I say? I have high standards. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Connecticut Man1's picture
I agree with your point. It is a decided lack of journalistic ethics (lack of fact checking, biased stories, biased anonymous sources, etc.+++ too many to list) that led to the dumbing down of American news papers and, as a direct result, their readers.

SmartDog's picture
Glad someone sees this point. I may have stated it a bit harshly...but I stand by the point, the article is slanted by leaving out an obvious and crucial fact. It's journalism as entertainment... all too common today. It's not the end of the world, but I expect more of Pat. ~Listen to the smart dog!

The Teacher's picture
Not to mention the Mercedes ad on the top there :) Huh, you edited something didn't you? How I got from replying to your other comment to this one I'll never know.

Connecticut Man1's picture
Edited what? I don't think so... BUT How did I end up down here? OK... I might have changed something that was misspelled. :)

The Teacher's picture
LOL, my bad, somehow when I clicked reply to a post higher up it sent me down here...

I can understand your concern for getting Kostitsyn the senior signed at a reasonable rate, but to suggest something written by Mr. Hickey would factor in any discussions between Gainey and agent is a bit of a stretch. If a journalist's speculation is enough to tip the negotiating table one way or another, the league is in serious trouble. ;) I know it's easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of speculation at this time of year, but you need to keep things in perspective. Gainey is too smart/responsible to be taken for a ride on a contract like Kostitsyn's.

SmartDog's picture
As with Teach below, I realize I was a little reactive... but I do think journalists have a lot of power. People are people - hockey players included, and things add up in their minds. ~Listen to the smart dog!

The Teacher's picture
All points I'm sure Mr. Gainey knows and has pointed out to Mr. Meehan. I'm sure Andrei knows this as well :) Gainey is no donkey.

SmartDog's picture
LMAO (donkey). True. I have to admit, I slept really badly and still hadn't had coffee when I wrote that. ~Listen to the smart dog (most of the time, but not always)!

The Teacher's picture
LMAO, nice edit on your signature.

G-Man's picture
So, is Holmgren still the genius all the Gainey bashers have asserted? Glad BG is the GM. If he signs Sundin that will shut a lot of the naysayers' mouths. #25 in 2009 is possible. Gilbert

TommyB's picture
That should shut them up .... for about 30 seconds.

SmartDog's picture
Who were Carter's line-mates? ~Listen to the smart dog!

habs-13's picture
He spent most of the season as Philly's third line center. His regular linemates on the third line were Upshall and Knuble.

twocents's picture
I think the Carter signing puts Philly at 55 mil. Which doesn't leave anything for Jason Smith. To make this deal work they have given up Umberger, Smith and Prospel (no big loss there). Meanwhile we have added Tanguay, still have plenty of room to bring someone else in and will not be giving up any of the elements that were significantly in play during the second round series.(just to nip this in the bud, Streit had 2 assists, both Gorges and Boullion were able to do that.) I wouldn't mind seeing how things will turn out another time around.

Gainey should just bite the bullet and give Kostitsyn whatever he feels he is worth. He is young, he seems to like playing in Montreal, and he has a bright future ahead of him. Sundin clearly has no intention of becoming a Hab. If he had, Gainey would heard by now. No news is bad news. He's headed south of the border - forget it Bob!

SmartDog's picture
Really glad you are not the GM. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Who asked you? Dog is a good name for you, as your six hours of posts indicate that you have a whole lot of time on your hands.

The Teacher's picture
Ditto to that. My sentiments exactly.

Connecticut Man1's picture
Too many people seem to think we still won't get him if he hasn't signed by July 1st. Flawed thinking, IMHO. He wouldn't have Okayed discussions with Montreal if he were not interested. But that does not preclude him from making the very sane decision of waiting until after July 1st to decide. It is obvious from Gainey's previous statements that management understands this. Why don't the fans?

Chuck's picture
It wan't important that Sundin sign here before July 1st. What WAS important was that Bob get a head start on laying the groundwork which could see Sundin sign. __________________________________

Connecticut Man1's picture
Bingo! He knew we wanted him last year and I am pretty sure he knew what the Leafs would get in return - so he has a good idea how much we wanted him. We are still after him and HE OPENED THE DOOR to let us talk. I am a freakin' pessimist in almost all things but I think there is very good reason to be optimistic on this.

The Teacher's picture
Better if he signs after anyways, Laughs get no compensation.
