They have many UFAs and they unloaded the $7.8m Brad Richards contract as well.

I completely agree with this post, Boone. I've been advocating Rolston as a plan B for some time now on this site (along with acquiring a top four defenseman, like Roscival, Smith, or Malik).
And, I was somewhat criticized for suggesting that Rolston could command $5m on the open market, but I'm glad your range has validated my predicted salary.
Tanguay-Rolston-Kovy
AK46-Pleks-SK74
Higgins-Koivu-Lats
Chipper-Lapierre-Kosto
Bench: Stewart, Begin
Markov-Komo
Hammer-OB
Cube-Roscival/Smith/Malik
Bench: Brisebois
Price Halak
Trade to free up cap space or to land a top four d-man: Grabs, Dandy, Gorges (sorry Boone)

How bout if all fails with Sundin or Rolston, reuniting Naslund and Bertuzzi with one of our young guys like...Stewart?Or minikost?or Lapierre?Or give that line one of our veterans like Kostopulas or Saku?

It's Strange How CBC Defines the Word 'Spectacular'
Just read this in an article: "the NHL season will open next fall with a “spectacular” matchup of the Red Wings vs. the Maple Leafs, to be televised on CBC."
LMAO... a 'spectacular' match-up of the best team in hockey and the laffingstock of the league. The only way I'd watch is if they all wore clown suits and threw pies at each other.... maybe they'll try an "American Idol" approach and we can vote for the new CBC song... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Wake me up when the CBC implodes.

Submitted by gohabzzzz on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 18:12.
omg, CBC tries to hard...PATHETIC
the funny thing about maple laughs is that they're buying out the contracts of all the old timers that they re-signed not too long ago

I'd rather no deal than a weak deal. That would let us assess the team... we can always find a dance partner later with a cap problem. Playoff bound teams with lots of cap room are more rare than those without - opportunities would open.

~Listen to the smart dog!
Submitted by Bouleau noir on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 16:06.
Not counting Sundin......
1- Hossa would be the most significant addition to our present roster...... but his salary and contractual terms might makes him a bad choice when looking at the whole picture.
2- Rolston would be the second most significant addition we could make.... his scoring bias and versatility makes shure of that.... but I somewhat doubt that he would be interested to come here if you give him the choice... and he will have plenty of choices.
3- Huselius would be an addition of great value to our present roster as well.... this offensivelly gifted smooth skater would along with our late addition of Tanguay make our team easilly the fastest most exciting team to watch in the NHL... and would definitly put our team in the cup contending bracket at the start of our anniversary season. He is fairly young and his salary would be reasonable as well and I wouldn't be surprise that he would love to joined a brilliant team like the CH for the long term.

Submitted by likehoy on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 15:57.
1. rolston
2. stoll
3. jagr
only reason why stoll's up there is cause he'd be affordable and i can't imagine lapierre or chipchura centering one of our top 3 lines which all have scoring wingers...

Submitted by SmartDog on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 15:41.
I agree with the idea we need a pure goal-scorer or intimidating power forward more than anything... and that a goal scorer will have a field day in Montreal with all of our passers. I'd go:
1. Rolston
2. Hossa or Jagr
3. Avery
I know Avery's an ass. But he's the best agitator out there, and he'd add a new dimension for other teams to look out for. While they're focusing on Avery, our guys can finesse them. I'm tired of us having small guys to do a big guys job.
It shows how tight it is getting though... only 4 or 5 names really left.
~Listen to the smart dog!

Submitted by Hud on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 15:08.
1 - Marian Hossa (Speed, talent, goalscoring)
2 - Brian Rolston (Speed, huge shot, versatility, leadership)
3 - Teemu Selanne (Great overall skills, the "Koivu" effect)
Special mentions: Todd Bertuzzi (reduced price), Sean Avery.

Submitted by vaya_ on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 14:46.
1. Rolston (though I haven't heard any interest for him from the Montreal camp)
-Brings most of the offense, size and shot we need from Sundin, at a lower price tag.
2. Hossa
-Although I'm not sure the price tag will work in our favor in a few years, there's no doubt that we're a better team with Hossa on our first line. Besides, he's got several good years left at his age.
3. Huselius
-Not a huge guy, but he's another talented forward that would fit in well with our offensive system.
Special mention: Selanne (hey, we can always dream right?)

OK I'll bite...
1. Brian Rolston- he is the FA who comes closest to delivering the whole package that Sundin represents.
I honestly believe that beyond him we get into players who are compromises on several levels and I am tempted to stick with the players we have until a trade situation arises. But, with that in mind, adding another asset might facilitate the right trade. So...
2. Marion Hossa- I am reluctant about what he brings in terms of his impact on chemistry and character. I think the money, and even more so, the likely term don't make sense for us but, his talent is undeniable.
3. I know this is not going to be popular but...Wade Redden- The last two years don't look good on him but as a #4 I think he makes our blueline look great. I think being out of Ottawa will provide him with new spark. But... only for way less than his current value seems to be, 4 to 4.5 million. Otherwise, I pass.

With the signing of Carter and Eminger the Flyers have maxed out or exceeded the cap and they are now minus Umberger, Jason Smith and Prospel. How would a second round series play out now?

Submitted by 24 Cups on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 14:21.
twocents - I guess they are planning of having Gagne, Parent, and Giroux/Downie take their places in the Flyer lineup next year. However, it will take Fort Knox to work out their cap situation. I have no idea if Rathje's salary counts against the cap. I figure he must be on Long Term Injury Reserve by now. Should be interesting!

Hey guys...first time poster here ;)
It would definitely be interesting to see Rolston in a Habs jersey. This guy has the monster slapper we've been looking for, and would complement Tanguay quite nicely in my opinion. He's a better "Ryder" with much more speed, who can fill any forward slot. Doesn't seem to have an inflated ego or to be a troublemaker either.

Thanks for the kind welcome.
In any case, we need a finisher type player badly. Too many playmakers might make things a little hairy ;) All because we rely on half decent snipers at the moment. Yes we had an incredible offensive season stats wise, but we need a regular 40 goal man. No doubt. A 30-35 goal player could become a 40-45 goal player with the quality of passing we got.

Submitted by vaya_ on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 14:47.
Indeed, a Selanne or Rolston or Hossa would become a real threat on one of our lines!

I know Tampa has made some mistakes but I think by locking in the best talent they can find they'll build another winner... just as long as they don't give out too many 'no trade' clauses. Tampa is the next Penguins.

I've tried to keep my optimism up but I have to admit with this thread it's starting to wane:
- Rolston would be perfect, but there's no way he's coming
- Denis as a back-up to Price is frighteningly stupid... yet it could happen - if it does it will be politics... and if it does, why did we keep (nurture, train) Halak?
- Sundin might come, but probably not, and even if he does, I'm not positive it's the right move... 37, different line-up, huge salary... it might work or it could be ANOTHER bad experiment.
- The mere suggestion that Brisebois will be back makes me want to turn the tv off for the next week.... and I'm hearing that suggestion more and more.
Please Bob, whatever you do or DON'T do - NO washed up, has-been, 2nd chance, long shot players. PLEASE! If you can't get a solid guy, do NOTHING and look for a hold out veteran in Sept., who'll come cheap (so low risk) and bring some experience. Having cap space will open up options later.... with a solid line-up already in the dressing room, this could be the best place - and an enviable place - to be.

I believe the veteran goalie we need is Olaf Kolzig! He would be the perfect compliment to Carey Price. This move would also allow the Habs the freedom to trade Halak. If the Sundin signing does not occur the options are endless but, I would consider any FA option regardless of position!

Kolzig is too much of a hot head.. He still thinks he is a number 1 goalie.. See how he reacted when Huet went to Washington.. I believe witha few posts that Conklin is a better fit for us then Kolzig..

TSn is reporting that the Habs are in the market for a "veteran" back up for Carey Price. The name dropped was Marc Denis, who says he'd love to come play in his home town.....Marc Denis?
There is better out there, and I'd hate to see Montreal become the team Fr. Canadian players go to at the END of their playing careers.
UFA goalies for 2008: Alex Auld, Jocelyn Thibault, John Grahame, Patrick Lalime, Johan Holmqvist, and Ty Conklin are some goalies that at the right price could be the "veteran" backup BG might be looking for.

I think they want someone with NHL experience willing to play in the AHL in case Price or Halak get hurt. Of course, Gainey could have a back up plan that includes trading Halak if Sundin doesn't sign. I think Halak would have considerable value in a trade.

I'm wondering if anyone thought it would be a good idea to have Huselius at the deadline. He could be signed at 3.5-4 mil range I think. If we could bring him in, he's a great left wing who;s played with tanguay and they've gotten plenty of points together. That would make the forward lines something like:
Huselius - Koivu - Tanguay
Higgins - Pleks - Kovalev
AKost. - Grabs/Chips - SKost.
Begin - Lapierre - Kostop
Come on, tell me that doesn't sound good!
Submitted by Bouleau noir on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 13:45.
I would love BG to get Hesulius if he isn't able to get Sundin or Rolston with the CH... he would also be a quality addition to our team ... with the existing parity, the possibility of injuries and all you just never have enough of it.
Submitted by Derek on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 14:35.
Good that someone agrees! Since the odds of us attracting the bigger superstars (Briere, Shanahan, Smyth) don't seem to work out, y not the equally other important top 6 forwards? This guy tends not to get injured either!
In this line up you can also switch up AKost with Higgins, you'd get a more defensive 3rd line and the same productive offense as we saw this year. Who cares if Huselius isn't teh toughest? Detroit isn't the most rough team either, and they seem to win pretty easily.

I love Boone. Starts out with complete speculation that we might go after him. Goes through his off-season stuff and reads the Wild's guide. Types it in. Reads it as he writes it. . . Neglects to make fun of the fact that it says his favourite food is pizza twice. . . Sees he likes the Rangers and NYC. . . Adds speculation on top of speculation that maybe his self-made supposition that the Canadiens might go after Rolston could be spurned by the Rangers based on that fact and that fact alone.
Good old-fashioned journalism meets the Internet. Well done, Boone! I think you may in fact be the biggest hockey nut in Montreal; I'm glad that one of the good ones gets paid to follow the team.
Oh, and do I even have to mention that one of us plebs would be banned from the site if we used his language and visuals (i.e. STFU the other day, "blue balls" today?) The guy is a classic. . . I'll take 50 Boones for every one Red Fisher any day of the week.
