Well THERE's some news, Sundin hasn't made up his mind.
In other news: George Bush is a moron, the sun is expected to rise tomorrow, and gas is expensive. Sheesh... what news.
I don't hold it against Mats though - none of us has any idea what he's thinking about. He just got engaged - maybe he wants to have a life away from hockey.
If I were Gainey I would be cautious. We're too close to having a power house team to waste any cap space on expensive gambles... by this I mean, if he CAN'T get Mats, I hope he doesn't take a gamble on someone less consistent. I think Hossa would be great but not on a long-term contract. Rolston is the closest to a solid guy, who'll probably be 2 million less than Mats. Alternately, he could go into the season with some cash to spare, and look for a deal with a team tight against the space, or at the trade deadline. I don't like leaving money on the table, but if the alternative is to lock is into a risky deal... I'm all for it.
I'm just hoping on Tuesday we don't sign someone at Malone prices with a question mark on his forehead.
~Listen to the smart dog!
agree about waiting till the deadline IF habs can not get rolston. problem is the best center UFA's after this season are not great... but.... tim connelly, shawn horcoff and mike cammalleri are all on poor teams that may be available. also henrik sedin will be ufa. while each does not put the habs over the top there may be a case to get one at the deadline (really dpeends on the output of the thirs line this year).
i am against giving mats anything over $7M for many reason.
LOL
It's like death, taxes and woman troubles.
Sundin will let us know what his plans are tomorrow. Hopefully???

Well the weekend is over.
He's just toying with the Habs and their fans.
Must be some cruel, sick joke that Cliffy came up with :(
Montreal has apparently traded the rights to Mark Streit to Vancouver for a 4th round pick.
Ecklund couldn't have done it better himself.
At least I don't make a habit of it. Excuse me if I have friends ;)
don't compare me to that idiot.
Did I miss this happening last year or is this "early bird" business all new? Did Gainey/Fletcher invent a hot new trend?
You missed it last year with Nashville and Philly.
Cobourn and some other guy. Hartnell?
I liked him in the lineup. (I know many others here didn't so much) I wish him good luck!
Get the feeling Ryder might get moved too? I hope so.
I liked him too. I've posted several times that I though resigning him should be a priority.
But my opinion, clearly, doesn't count for much with Bob. Maybe he didn't hear me. Maybe if I typed LOUDER...?
Anyway- he's gone, and he'll be missed.
Everybody has opinions... Some of them are even valid! lol
But, honestly, none of us has the inside track on players that are (or may be) available in trades and all of the other scouting opinions to work with regarding trades and the farm.
I really think that Gainey has done very little, in retrospect, that I can disagree with. He has a proven track record AND he is moving this team closer to the top.
Teach, how in the bleep are you getting this info so fast?
Apparently it's B.S...my friend in T.O. likes to play stupid games with me.
Soon as I heard that we were trying to sign Sundin I said "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO", Bob is going to make a mistake and cause a cancer on the team."
This guy is toying with us, he does not want to play in Montreal.
I want players who want to play for Montreal not ones that are undecisive and selfish! Seems like Foote and Liles have shown their dedication to resigning with Colorado and don't be surprised if Mats stays in Toronto for his final hurrah year in Toronto with a lavish retirement ceremony party after the season.
The Montreal Canadiens have acted in a professional and courtesy manner in an attempt to offer Mats Sundin to be a special member of the team for the Centennial Season and a chance to win a Stanley Cup, their 25th in team history.
Mats Sundin was supposed to give a decision by the weekend according to the media and it is now Monday morning.
Frankly, you have broken a lot of Habs fans hearts, but not mine. Face the music Mats. Habs fans want to know.
Now, moving forward. I heard that next years Free Agency crop is loaded with talent than this years. Can someone submit the list here? I don't want us to go to Plan B and sign a Hossa and this time next year find out we used up all our cap space money.
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"
First of all calling him selfish is ridiculous..
But it doesn't surprise me given your posts throughout the last week.
Heart-broken?
LMAO,. not in the slightest.
Heart Broken?? Get real Teacher.
Sundin selfish? Absolutley!
Seems like you're the one and others are going to be heartbroken. Bob's a smart man and he won't break the vault for 1 individual to come to Montreal and the team bankrupt come next year in the free agency pool to sign a player that could or could not help us.
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"
Did they trade Streits rights to Vancouver or is it truly bull? I wouldn't mind a fourth rounder for nothing.
I think it's bull and he is playing games with me, I wouldn't mind it either.
He should know how fragile us habs fans are right now so give your friend a shot in the gut for me for that one, LOL!
Oh, I will. Believe you me. LOL
I would suggest putting a curse on him BUT he is already a leafs fan.
Actually, he's not. He was born and raised in Montreal, subscribes to RDS cause he's fed up of Laugh talk.
Although I do needle him ;)
I think that if a player say's that he hasn't decided by now whether or not he is even going to play this year then I'm going to say that player is full of s**t. They should know by now. It is obvious that Montreal is not Mats Sundin's #1 choice. It would be very awkward for him to play here for obvious reasons and I think he will exhaust all other options before going here. This puts Gainey in a tight spot because he might lose out on other players while waiting for Sundin to make up his mind. I would give Sundin a deadline to sign so we can move on.
Niedermayer?
No, Niedermayer has decided but Sudin hasn't and neither has Sakic. They know how important July 1 is to teams so they should get their act together.
Sakic is a little different. He's a little older, and we all know it's either Colorado or retirement for him. Since Sakic hasn't decided yet, something tells me that he's still dealing with injuries and is leaning towards reitrement.
As for Sundin, nobody seems to believe that he's ready for retirement, that he has a season or 2 if not more to go before he's ready to retire.
The only reason for Sundin to be doing what he's doing IMO is because he's not sure about signing with the Habs, and wants to see which teams make him offers on July 1st and go from there to the team he thinks gives him the best shot at winning the Cup.
I think he's a little nervous as to how he'll be treated in Toronto if he does sign with the Habs.
I agree Josh, it's a big risk for Sundin to play here.
I really don't think it will be.
Living in Toronto, it seems like most people here want him to have a shot at the Cup, and win it before he retires. They realize that it's not going to happen in Toronto and would rather he do it with the Habs than the Sens. Some wouldn't be very happy if he won it with the Habs (cuz we'd never let them live it down), but they wouldn't suddenly hate Sundin if that's what happened.
Of course there will be some who call Sundin a traitor if that happens, but it'll be the same ones who call him a traitor for not retiring with the Leafs.
Every team has their group of loudmouthed jerks, we have them too.
I think we'd end up seeing a lot of Leaf fans wearing the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge with Sundin's #13 on it if he came over to the Habs, and continue to wear it until the Leafs got good again.
