If we're going to follow the (appropriate) gambling analogy, you also have to concede that sometimes you just have to play for the river card. You can be smart and tactical up to a point. But if that's all you do, you'll never be the last person at the table. You have to occasionally make an all-in play for that all-or-nothing river card. And Gainey just doesn't have the guts for that kind of high-stakes play. As a gambler, and as a GM, he's overrated.

Sundin a classy Guy? I think not!
J.P. Barry, has said that Montreal is going in a different direction! That's funny. Montreal was not until today I guess. This different direction came about today. Yeah Right!!!!
Both Sundin & Barry are CRAP. Gainey should have got the hint that Montreal was not on Sundins list when he did not want to meet face to face with Gainey.
SUNDIN IS TRASH................

Chicago signs UFA defenceman Brian Campbell to an 8 year deal worth $56.8-million

Campbell gets $7.1m per year. Wonder what Streit - another puck moving defenseman - will command.

Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, has said that Montreal is going in a different direction.

I think Boone has opened a new thread at the top of the main page that he intends to just update. He has made a couple of additions so far. I am not sure though.

Boone should have used the live-blog format for this, but it's too late to start now.

I am glad it was slow work day.... I wonder if 5 hours straight of refreshing is a skill I can bring to my mid year review. See yeah ladies & gents, I'll check back later!

Suddenly quiet on this thread. Did Gainey trade all of the other fans? heh

Submitted by The Teacher on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 16:13.
Mais non, Gainey is Chief sitting still.

Submitted by coutNY on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:54.
For what - We have plenty right now... not that we couldn't put it toward Halak salary, but we still have around $10.5 million free

Submitted by gmd on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:53.
Gainey has already said he won't buy him out.

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:55.
Yeah but we all know we can't trust Gainey. Says any shit that pops into his head. :)

Submitted by The Teacher on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 16:08.
LMAO too funny
Submitted by ebk on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:56.
actually they bought out two before last season Cullimore and a Finn who's name I won't attempt to spell.

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:59.
Salmelainen, Tony....too many vowels.
Leafs signed him to play with the Marlies.

Submitted by The Teacher on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 16:14.
The Finns have too many vowels, the Czechs have too many consonants, why don't we put them together in a box and jumble them up? ;) lol

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:56.
They bought out Breezer three years ago, but that's different, LOL.

For what it's worth, Fan590 and Hockeybuzz repoting Laffs are talking to Redden and McCabe is bye-bye
Submitted by HabsFreak (not verified) on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:54.
They're stuck with McCabe. Whether he plays or not, they're paying him full salary. Redden can find a better situation then TOR.

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:53.
Yup, the pucking Leafs dog next door just confirmed.

Submitted by gmd on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:51.
How will they get rid of McCabe with his NTC? Buy him out?
Submitted by nightmare_49 on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:55.
Tell him to stay at home and pay him , Hardball.

Submitted by gmd on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:56.
I wish I could get that deal.

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:52.
They will sign Sean Avery and make him his room mate.

We trade Huet for a 2nd round pick and now he signs with the Hawks for 22.5 million for 4 years , there's something wrong with this picture. Who got shafted?

Submitted by Chorske on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:59.
I think Chicago overpaid.
The question is, were we willing to pay Huet what HE thought he was worth, given that Carey Price was set to become a #1? The answer, clearly, is no, because he turned down 4 mil plus in Washington.
That said, we would've lost him today for nothing. Bob got a 2nd round pick for him. I think we did OK.

Submitted by Y on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:48.
Hard to say, but the Hawks have a very large headache in goal now.
Submitted by ebk on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:47.
shh, don't bring logic into it
Submitted by nightmare_49 on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:52.

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:49.
The Hawks offered us Khabilin for him only.

Submitted by TommyB on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:45.
On the goaltender situation....this coming year Halak gets a $350K raise, bringing him to $850K. The same thing Price will get this year. Price has one more year after this, still at $850K before he gets to negotiate. So, in a weird twist, whatever raise Halak gets, he will be making more than Price next year. No point to this, really, just kind of weird that your backup will make more than your starter. Of course, this is assuming both are here two years down the road. This is where I wish Gainey would be a bit more proactive contract-wise. If Carey Price shows this year what we are expecting from him, and puts up some really good numbers (or dare I even suggest it, we win the Cup), Gainey should get Price signed long term and not wait until July 1st two years from now.

Submitted by coutNY on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:49.
Would you going to give him the $1.35 million bonus Price got too???

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:51.
The NHLPA bonus clauses are only applicable to entry level contracts and contracts to players 35 years of age and older.
Submitted by ebk on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:49.
Price with bonuses, will make $2.2m for the next couple of years. $850k base salary

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:47.
As a first round pick on an entry level contract, he is eligible for all kinds of performance bonuses.
But, only if he quits smoking!

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:44.

TSN: "Ottawa signs UFA goaltender Alex Auld to a 2 year deal worth $1-million"
sportsnet:
"Avg. yearly value: $1 million
Length of contract: 2 years"
Methinks that the TSN numbers must be wrong.

Great, the Habs ate him up last year!

Submitted by coutNY on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:34.
I'm Still lost in confussion on what Chi-town is doing with HUET and Khabibulin. The salary alone is enough to make a GM puke.

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:35.
They'll have to buy out the Bullin Wall.
I thought he'd be headed back to Tampa, but I guess that it's Kolzig who'll be working on his tan there.

Submitted by Y on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:38.
That's going to one hell of a buy out.

Submitted by coutNY on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:46.
They're looking at a 4 1/2 million.... so basically they would have to get a back up in a slim market that would still cost them around 5 1/2 buyout included, If they can't trade him, they might have to keep him he's still better than any free agent out their they could get for 2 mill they'd be saving.

Submitted by Chorske on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:32.

Submitted by vaya_ on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:34.
money money money...
i figure the more UFAs get snatched up, the more value the big names get. if sundin gets signed, rolston's value goes up, and vice-versa.

Kolzig officially to Tampa.

Submitted by Chorske on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:25.
We're signing Halak. After Huet, Theo and Kolzig, the market for goalies (esp one with so little experience at the NHL level) is going to cool off. The teams that needed goalies got them (although I dont necessarily approve of their choices).

Submitted by Robert L on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:26.
Emery and Ivory is still out there!

Submitted by Chorske on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:34.
Exactly. The market is officially stone cold for goalies, and Bob is going to end up sweet as roses yet again, signing this kid (who everyone around here knows is NHL caliber) as a BACKUP to a bargain contract.
Just another bold prediction based on sheer guesswork.
Submitted by HabsFreak (not verified) on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:21.
I hope we sign Halak and he's cool with being a no.2 for the contract.

Submitted by The Teacher on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 15:15.
Yup
Tampa Bay signs UFA goaltender Oleg Kolzig to a 1 year deal worth $1.5-million (plus bonuses).
News flash TSN- his name is OLAF.
