Ryder to Boston

posted by Mike Boone at 21h13 EST on Jul 1

Three years at $4 million per.

Six occasions per season, plus playoffs, to prove Canadiens management was wrong about him.

This reunites Ryder with Claude Julien, who coached him in the Q and with the Canadiens.

Ryder, a 28-year-old native of Bonavista, Nfld., made $2.95 million in his fourth and final season  in Montreal, where every year's contract negotiations were lengthy and acrimonious.

I am eager to see who will be Carbonneau's "Whipping Boy" this comming season now that Mr. Ryder is gone on to get the respect he deserves.

I say Higgins. He was not too impressive last year. Was practally invisable in the playoffs.....

It was funny how everyone was on the Ryder bandwagon the first three years he was a Hab.

Higgins will suffer the same fate.......

sigh..this site is going to the garbage pail...

no one will have time to read through all the crap being repetitiously posted.

Good to see all these ex-Habs getting nice contracts. I'm especially glad for Ryder and hope he has a good year. Don't know what went on between him and Carbo but I'm of the impression that the coach showed a lot less patience for him than he did some of the others. Time will tell if Carbo screwed this situaion up or not. They play the Bruins six times this year so it should be real interesting.

GO HABS.

It's been some time since I joined in.

ABSULUTELY no surprises from Montreal(current and former) camp yesterday.

-Ryder to Boston for 4 million per I was telling friends as much in February that he would probably rejoin Claude Julien a coach who has showed great confidence in him since his junior days. Good luck Michael.

-Huet to Chicago for 4.2 million per ONLY surprise is that Washington did not resign him.

-4 MILLION per for MARK STREIT that's 2.5 more than what he's worth no surprise that some dummy GM was willing to pay.

-4.5 Million per for Theodore see above.

-3.75 for Kotstitsyn VERY SMART WOW is this going to be cheap (if almost 4miion can be cheap) in a couple of years.

The Teacher's picture

Huet is getting 5.6 million per...dumb move by Chicago

Kostitsyn is getting 3.25 a year.

The second I got home from work this morning I rushed to my laptop and got on HIO to see if there was any new news regards all the UFA's out there. When I saw Ryder's name paired with Boston, a wave of joy washed over me. But so did a twang of regret. His overall ability was never great. He wasn't quick. He was weak on the backcheck and in the defensive zone, and had a great deal of trouble anticipating plays, and even if he did manage to read the play his passing game wasn't one of his best qualities. Or maybe it was? But there was something about him albiet his shade under average amount of skill. Something like a bomb waiting to go off with an explosion of goals. The two games that I will forever remember Micheal Ryder by that will stick to my mind until I die are Habs - Leafs '07 and Rangers - Habs '08. His hat trick in the second period was adreneline pumping, fist clenchin' fun. I just stood infront of the TV, my big couch too far from the heroics I was witnessing. Such a dissapointing end to that game though, but those goals are etched there, in less then half a period a hat trick from a player who isn't that great, but man he has heart. Then the game on 19th of February, one of the rare times I get a chance to go to a hockey game, and it is on that day, what a delight. Yet again, Ryder makes my day. By the time it was 5-0, I had already witnessed quite a few people from various distances getting up and leaving with there coats and families. Poor bastards! Ryder scored the first goal for the Habs, quarterbacks the second goal, (which was originally awarded to him), and then scores the fourth five or six seconds after Koveleav pots the third. He had some good games and some Glorious games, but alot of no games. I'll still miss him though, even if I didn't like him much as a player in general.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why his brother dropped out of the AHL?
Just a coincedence that one Ryder stops his professional hockey career and the other has a horrible year. Or is Ryder's year a reflection of his brothers situation?

Bye, #73, I'll miss you, but not that much.
Good luck on your technical game.

gfunkdoc's picture

This isn't the same Michael Ryder that played for Montréal last season, is it?

Farewell Michael Ryder! I am going to miss Ryder and I wish him nothing but the best as long as it doesn't impact my Habs. He will undoubtedly have a great year as I am certain Julien will give him a shot at playing with Marc Savard who may be the purest assist machine in the league. I would not have paid any of Streit, Ryder or Huet anywhere near the money they got but I am happy for all three of them. Good luck to all.

I for one am VERY glad Mike Ryder is with the Bruins.

It's win-win. Ryder is with the coach who knows how to use him best - and so he gets the shot he needs - and probably deserves. For us, we've removed a player that was not fitting with our 2-way game. Even more than that we don't have to hear about it... or argue about his ice time ANYMORE.

As a bonus - it's going to be a REALLY interesting story to watch this year.

Ok, now that everything sort of calmed down from yesterday's insanity, here my 2 cents.

In the past I have both criticized and commanded BG for his moves and signings but based on kind of ridiculous signings that happened yesterday I have to give BG big kudos for not giving in and overpaying for whatever UFAs he had his eyes on.

Habs will do fine with the roster they have during the regular season, and BG will have 8 or so months from today to land a big forward to help us with size and muscle in the playoffs at a much better price before the trade deadline.

The only thing I was truly disappointed about was Ryder's departure. Can't blame Ryder for grabbing both the money and the opportunity to go to Bs and play for Claude Julien again. Claude, no doubt, will manage him and his play purely from professional perspective unlike carbonneau who does everything from "do I like you, do I not like you" angle. Can’t wait for the time when Ryder comes back and wipes carbonneaus smug smirk off his face. One can only hope that he won't become John Leclair for the next 10 or so years.

Overall, good day yesterday for Habs since we didn't lose a lot and didn't waste money on any overpaid, overhyped and over the hill UFAs.

FORD TOUGH's picture

I agree with U Timo.

The way Montreal handled Ryder was awful. Talk about Toronto having no class.

SmartDog's picture

Hey Timo,

I agree with you about everything including some concern about Carbo's managing of certain players (can't qustion his overall success but...). The only thing I disagree about is Ryder. I just can't stand guys that are terrible in plus-minus. Am curious to see if A) he returns to scoring form (probably) and b) if he leads them in minus (probably too). Only time will tell.

I don't have stats in front of me, but I thought his +/- has dramatically improved from last year (ok, maybe not dramatically). He was asked to concentrate on his defensive game and from what I have seen he was ok in that regard. Can't rack too many minuses if you sit in the press box, can you?

habs-13's picture

The only thing I don't understand is how he gets a raise after having a season like he just had. Maybe if he had another 30-35 goal season, but not one like the one he just had.

FORD TOUGH's picture

Boston was basing Ryder's performance on 3 great years out of 4. Everyone knows that Montreal's handling of Ryder was shameful, even Julien....

SmartDog's picture

The Bruins GM said that since Ryder was "in the doghouse" you don't count last year. :)

Of course this ignores WHY he was in the dog house.

I've been a lifetime Habs fan and can't believe the people who post here . Some of you see the problem with Carbonneaus tactics but others bash Ryder and Streit and whoever chooses to leave the Habs for a better future. I remember John Leclair was called a loser when he left Montreal and he turned out to be one of the top scorers in the NHL. I also can recall the same being said about, Mark Rechhi, Matt Schneider and Chris Chelios , Eric Desjardins, Paatrick Roy . I guess you understand where i'm going with this now. We never learn from our mistakes and always let good players get away from us over the years.Ryder and Streit will surely turn out to be mistakes like the rest of them. Real Habs fans understand the game and can see the other side of the coin. Can you?

FORD TOUGH's picture

Way to go Newfie Boy. You tell these people........

SmartDog's picture

Good point. I am not a Ryder fan but that's because I don't think he fits with this teams style of play. He may do very well in Beantown. But it's way too early to say he's a John Leclair.

~Listen to the smart dog!

But what is the Canadien's style of play. Win 3 games, lose one, change the lines. win 2 lose 1, bench a whipping boy. I still say we ended up in first, not because of Carbo, but in spite of him. He's a lousy coach. Mark my words- Ryder will have an excellent year with Boston.

imafogdevil's picture

I am estatic for you Mike! Way to go! I know you will be put into situations where you will succeed and excel, unlike last year, and earn every penny of your salary.

At least next year I can watch the Habs without cursing and swearing at Carbonneau for your mishandleing. That always tore me in two directions. I hope for the sake of hockey gods this doesn't bite us....it somehow always does....

This will be the last time that my tag line will appear.....I do hate the Bruins......dammit I'm torn again!

RYDER is worth 4 million a year and he did more than Koivu in the last few years for the Habs . Koivu continues to be protected by so called Habs fans who singled out Ryder this year and called him a bum etc... I guess Koivu is untouchable even though his play has been questionable for a couple of years now. You use excuses to protect him every year. Like he is sick,he has an eye injury etc.... The bottom line is that he is ineffective as a captain now and needs to move on . Ryder was on the bench or 3rd or 4th line most of the year and missed about 14 games in regular season and a most of games in the playoffs. He wasn't on the powerplay much like previous years and wasn't offered respect from the coach like other players. Latendresse is a real work horse ? I guess he's french so they keep a real softy in the lineup just about every night. Mike Ryder will excel with the Bruins and you will eat your words. I guess some people can't tell good players when they see them. I guess Lapierre is gonna score 86 goals in the next three seasons like Ryder did. Thats what we will need to replace him and now Streit gone too, I can't see the logic in losing either player to free agency. Now we may not even get Sundin or Hossa . Who is left to lead us to the cup , where are the impact players that will join Kovalev. Wake up an see the mistakes that are being made. Carbonneau was a great player but I question his coaching ability. He broke up a first line combination that worked for the past several seasons. They had a slow start so he destroyed all three players by moving them around. Habs fans should be very upset these days . Remember Higgins had an average year as well all due to Carbonneau shifting their lines all year!

habs-13's picture

Yes Koivu is considered to be untouchable by many because of what he has done for this team during his time here. He is the heart and soul of this club. He's always battling and steps up when we need him. He came into the playoffs fresh off an ankle injury that wasn't completely healed and put up 9 pts in 7 games. He constantly faces critism and yet still chose to resign here two years ago. He not only wants to win, but he wants to win with the Habs.

“Many people wondered why I chose to re-sign here two years ago,” Koivu told canadiens.com. “I did it hoping to live a season like this one. With all of our young guys having one more year under their belts, things may not get any easier for us, but we will only get better.” - NHL.com

FORD TOUGH's picture

Due tell Habs-13.

What exactly did Koivu do for Montreal?

How many Cups did he win for us?

RetroMikey's picture

4 million per year for RYDER?
Get me a bucket, I'm gonna throw up!

"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

FORD TOUGH's picture

Hey Mikey!

I bet you wouldn't have minded Gainey signing Ryder to that same contract after he scored his 25, 30 & another 30 goal season!!!

You are a Pathetic ASS

Here's the BUCKET. Throw away.

Good Luck Ryder with your new team. You showed a lot of class this past year with everything that happened in Montreal. Let's hope that your old coach from the Q, AHL, and your first season in Montreal will get you back on track. A lot of fans forget that you had 25 goals, 38 assists, 63 points, and a +10 in your rookie season under Julien.

I had to laugh when I found out this morning that Ryder had signed with the Bruins. Robert L made a comment on here yesterday that 29 teams beside Montreal were not interested in Ryder. I guess Robert jumped the gun with that prediction. He must be envious because after the signing he predicted that Chiarelli would wake up this morning, and buy out Ryder's contract once he realized what he had done. It's not like the money is coming from the Habs payroll. It's good to see former Habs players get well rewarded elsewhere, e.g., Huet, Theodore, Streit.

I was surprised to see that Montreal had given another team the exclusive rights to negotiate with Ryder before free agency commenced. I guess they tried to get something in return, when they should have done this last spring at the trade deadline. Chiarelli said that there were 4-5 teams in the bidding, and this was reduced to 2-3 finalists.

Here is an article from the Boston Herald and a Bruins Blog on Ryder's signing. There are even some guarded comments on Ryder's situation in Montreal last season regarding him being in the doghouse, and we find out that there were many phone calls from Julien and Cam Nelly made to convince him to play with the Bruins.
