Kristian Huselius to Columbus: Four years,  $4.75 million per. He was making $1.4 million in Calgary.

Like new Canadien Alex Tanguay, Huselius had difficulty adapting to Mike Keenan. He'll love equally hard-ass Ken Hitchcock.

In La Presse, François Gagnon cites the Mike Commodore and Jeff Finger contracts as proof the NHL has gone nuts.

Supporting evidence: the Cristobal Huet and Michael Ryder deals. Gagnon says Ryder will find his comfort zone in Boston and slack off for $4 million.

Two takes on Marian Hossa: Pat Hickey in The Gazette  and Eric Duhatschek in the Globe and Mail.

To the surprise of no one, Brian Burke blames the madness on Kevin Lowe.

TSN says a Dan Boyle trade is imminent.

Thanks to frequent poster Smart Dog for pointing out a brilliant Dan Tolensky piece at Hockey Buzz on how the hapless Leafs may have mistaken Jeff Finger for Kurt Sauer.

whoa... check out the new post

Actually, Fletcher was inquiring about a possible trade for A. Kostitsyn....Bob, being the sharp one, confused Cliff and sent Grabovski instead. Cliff still thinks he acquired the right guy.

twocents's picture
I'm still laughing...

The Teacher's picture
LMAO, nice one Tommy

Wait 'til he yells 'AK' at him and he doesn't respond... "Oh great, this AK guy is deaf"

After reading Dan Tolensky piece, you almost have to feel sorry for the hapless, helpless, lowly Maple Laffs. What the f*%K am I writing!?!?! I apologize about the "feeling sorry" part fellow bloggers, temporary insanity on my part.

i just read the gagnon article...hilarious how he mentions erik cole going west-coast as an improvement for the habs

A little poll folks. I'm curious - if you had the choice would you rather: A) Sign Sundin to a 2-year 15 $million contract leaving a million or so max in cap room. B) Sign a gritty aging veteran (face-off specialist or leader) for approx $3 million and have 5 mill or so in cap room? For me, it's B. Wondering if I am alone in this. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Connecticut Man1's picture
Hope for A but I could settle for B, even if it would only be a pale version of A.

The Cat's picture
If we get Sundin or Boyle, Ill be very happy and confident about the upcoming season. If we dont get either one, its going to be a grind to make the playoffs.

mrhabby's picture
SUNDIN

I need to go with choice "B". We need some grit on our team. Just look at how we were tossed around by the inferior Flyers a couple of months ago. I don't want to sound redundant, but Ryan Malone would have been perfect fit for our Habs.

Sundin

mrhabby's picture
are you not describing sundin in B.

Grabbed The Cup's picture
No question for me, Sundin all the way.

we replaced Streit with Tanguay all in all an improvement, let Sundin sit at home this season and cry when he watches the parade in MTL

guys just to mention our failure...there were 959 posts in the other thread

I believe there were more at one point but, a certain someone's posts were deleted. I can't say if it ever made it to 1000. It would have happened in the middle of the night if it did.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=16043 But it's a stat comparison between Kurt Saucer and Jeff Finger. Also has a few quotes from Fletcher and Wilson. It's freakinhalarious.

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Everybod's seen it, it's the proof they signed the wrong guy.

SmartDog's picture
Yeah, we've been discussing it below (and yesterday too). Worth posting again though - it's Hillafious! ~Listen to the smart dog!

twocents's picture
BTW I am in agreement with your post earlier. At this point I am pretty sure better trade options will present themselves than the UFA's still available. However, I still think that if Sundin decides to come aboard, before then, we should welcome him at Bob's price. I too have some reservations but.....

madonna is doing A-ROD if anyone cares.

I'd only care if she was doing My-ROD! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Madonna's doing someone? Since when is that news? ~Listen to the smart dog!

coutNY's picture
Since she'll be turning into an old hag at 50 in a few weeks and for anyone to still find her attractive... A-Rod should be examined... She old enough be his Mom. You'd think a man worth a 1/2 billion dollars would have more descretion or at least go after a celeb people could make the assumption he was thinking with the other head?

With commodore as their #1 Dman? are you joking? ~Listen to the rooster! He knows what he's saying!

that's very, very bad. very bad. wow, that kind of thing would basically have to slip by everybody in the organization. and finger is kind of a distinct name. it's not like they made the mistake of drafting someone somewhat similarily named like Handzus or Palmateer or even Vladimir Digitoff. oh man, what a start to the season. at least Finger is alive i guess, that's a start.

coutNY's picture
I could have seen them giving Marcel Hossa a 9 year 9 million dollar deal... I guess there is still time.

Or they could try to bring Moe Robinson out of retirement ;)

I'm one of those who is very glad Bob hasn't signed anyone... I've been an advocate of holding the money for better opportunities later since BEFORE July 1. I may be alone in this but I for one am not convinced Sundin is worth what he'll command (and I think we can get more for less later - curious as to whether anyone is with me in this thinking). But I do have to admit that this feels entirely like sitting around watching paint dry. Maybe the habs could at least put out a press release about something (our trainig camp??? our drafts??? a new zamboni??? SOMETHING). That's my PERSONAL perspective but from a BUSINESS perspective, the communications guys with the Habs are missing a huge opportunity. They should wake up and take advantage of the attention and get us jazzed about something... prospects probably. Really.. a missed opportunity but the Canadiens communication department. IMCO ~Listen to the smart dog!

Why communicate??...the "Know-It-Alls" are all here.

Chuck's picture
Thank you. __________________________________

Here's some Montreal news to fill your cravings! Sorta like what took place in the Free agent Frenzy the past few days...

SmartDog's picture
Very funny coutNY, very funny... Look, I'm a media and marketing guy - I'm serious, you have all these Habs fans eager to see your next move, talking about the team. The communications dept. should be using the attention to put out some press about the prospect camp, or the up-coming season. Typical of a lax organization that gets so much money and attention they don't care. Question 1: if there was a good article by the Habs outfit about the Habs prospects would you read it and discuss it? Question 2: Do you think the communication dept. is too busy today to put it together? No, they're sitting around waiting like we are... with nothing to do. ~Listen to the smart dog!

coutNY's picture
Yeah, I hear yah, I think few RFA signings would appease the minds of pateintly waiting fans... especailly if they were good deals. I hope we're past the Ryder past RFA discussions, which usually intailed signing at the last minute before arbitraition type maddness. This seems to bring hositilty into future negotiations.

Ian Cobb's picture
Hey puppy-- It might be a little quiet on the home front but there is a reason for that. All the others are scrambling to catch up to what we already have in the draft pipeline. They all know who is riseing to the top of the heap. They sure know who drafted properly over the past few years and envy our debth.

SmartDog's picture
I'm glad it's quiet in terms of activity - I'm saying that the Habs communication dept. has us all waiting for news, they could easily be putting out some press about our prospect camp like most other teams are doing. The only two posts on Canadiens.com for the last week are the signing of K46 and something about Abba. Lame-o. If I was in charge of the Habs communication department, I'd be making some trades of my own. ~Listen to the smart dog!

did the leafs seriously sign the wrong guy?

Ian Cobb's picture
Yes

MikeL's picture
haha no

joeybarrie's picture
It's a good thing that Bob Gainey wont sell out our future for our present. I'm glad he's in charge and not alot of others...

Ian Cobb's picture
HOLY COW - did the Leafs ever screw up Royaly getting two players mixed up and signed the wrong guy to 4 mil by mistake! Finger instead of Sauer. Fletcher certainly had a very bad seniors moment! I wonder how they correct that one. Maybe give him the finger and a new Teachers pension!

Revolution No. 9's picture
Yeah, it really looks like a case of relying too heavily on bad advice.

Chuck's picture
Did they not even scout the guy? Why would they just rely on the advice of a couple of former associates before tossing around that kind of money? Stupid laffs... __________________________________

Sure looks like it when you read that argument by Tolensky eh!!! I think the Leafs clearly signed the wrong guy.....Cliff Fletcher!!!! It sure is nice to know that two of our chief rivals (Sens and Leafs) are being run by morons. Now all we need is for some idiots to come along and take over the Penguins,Wings,Stars,Sharks, etc. O.k. forget it....I'm content with the morons in Eastern Canada because those are the fans I always ahve to listen to.

SmartDog's picture
Good one Ian! Just bizzare... ~Listen to the smart dog!

what they signed the wrong guy. are you sure. i really have not been paying attention as it is the laffs after all.

ccs's picture
For those who are pissed at management for not signing any BIG players chill out a bit. Lets look at Sundin for example the Habs gave him an offer for X amount of cash over X amount of time. The canucks have an offer and we all know the terms. Sundin is thinking it over. Should Bob up the offer to 2 years at 15 million per???? Of course not. If Sundin is the player the Habs want they will wait it out and if he decides to go elsewhere who cares. We will be in great shape cap wise and that will only make us better in the short and long term.

joeybarrie's picture
Pay Ryder 4 million a year for that great season he just had and you watch him relax and live out his contract in Boston. Will he be an impact player, NO. I don't want a player to sit and collect his salary before he moves to his next team, or retirement. We want a player a la Hossa to CHOOSE us. If Sundin wants a Stanley cup we are his only viable option. We have a great team, and we NEED BG to continue down this road to create a team like Montreal is used to. I think we can all agree he played on one, and he certainly has the experience to know whats needed. RELAX. It's gonna be a GREAT YEAR.

gfunkdoc's picture
Amen

Fansincebirth's picture
Exactly... All the ranting and raving about BG not offering or not offering enough is ludicrous. Let other teams shoot themselves in the foot and have to pay the consequences down the road for the huge contracts they are shelling out. I'd love to add a big centre to our team but at what cost?

mrhabby's picture
it is a game after all even though its THE HABS.

I hope my sense of urgency isn't being mistaken for anger at Habs management as the players are the ones deciding their fates not a lack of effort on our part. I still believe Sundin may sign here but given we don't know what Gainey knows and if it is going nowhere then Jagr, Demitra and Marleau would all be good targets and I don't want to start a debate about Bert again but I would roll the dice on him if all else fails.
