signing georges is all good. its been a long time since we have had a force like that on the ice. he can just sit on the bench and the other team will know.
Ok now no more touching this lineup unless we add sundin.... getting naslund and bert would only take away ice from our young/exciting players:
If sundin dont come im comfortable starting the season like this with maybe a trade deadline acquisition in march ...
Tanguay Koivu S. Kost
A. Kost Pleks Kovi
Higgins Chips Latendresse
Begin lapierre laraques/kostopoulos
And if we sign sundin ...
Tanguay Sundin S. Kost
A. Kost Pleks Kovi
Higgins Koivu Latendresse(looks alot like 1st line last season)
Begin Chip/lapierre laraques/kostopoulos
I love it
I love the Georges Laracque signing, but not because he can fight (I'm one of those weird people who doesn't really care for fighting in hockey). He's a decent skater for a big guy, plays a dominant cycling game with the right linemates, and most of all is just an absolutely classy guy. He is a community superstar. And at the end of the day, THAT is the type of player that I can really get behind. As CoutNY pointed out earlier, Gainey is loading up on players with formidable character. I don't even begrudge the amount of money because this is one case where that money is likely to find its way back into the community.

Chris - Well said and Georges just made everybody on our roster an inch taller.
"He'll get his playing time"
My chief concern, I hope they can work him in for the whole season and not just spot duty.
$1.5 doesn't necessarily force a salary dump, as for redundancy, Kosto fills a different role and there's nobody else even close to Rock on our team.

just to stir some $#!t on a Thursday afternoon, I'd like to suggest that it's not too impressive for someone to know what he's saying, unless it's a stroke patient or something. What's more impressive is for someone to know what he's saying is true. :) I.e., you need a better tag line *** o' the Walk.
Lapierre can stir the ***. Georges finishes it. I'm already watering at the mouth to see this guy in the red CH beat the snot outta someone awww.... Tucker and Avery went to the east. :(
I think that is probably the matchup I am most looking forward to. I like Neil but damn he pisses me off when he pushes us around and gets that ugly grin going. I think Laraque is a good pick up...one of the few goons I'd like around. I am worried though about the cap space now if we sign Halak and Gorges ....do we have room for Mats....I need a number cruncher.
I wonder if Marleau is plan B because rumours seem to indicate San Jose has interest in Boyle...possible three way maybe explaining the center dump of Grabs and the acquisition of picks???
That was my thought originally as soon as I heard about Boyle but Gainey might just wait for Mats....hard to say. The other team I can see getting in that mix is thhe Sens who are dangling Vermette and Meszaros around. I can definitely see something involving Montreal happening but given that us fans don't have any real insight into the Mats situation it is hard to tell. I'd welcome Marleau with open arms but Mats is obviously the real catch. If we came out of this with Tanguay, Marleau and Laraque, a prospect and a 2nd round pick and gave up Grabs I'd be pretty darn happy. I wanted two top forwards. Tanguay is one so from there I still believe we need one more to be legitimate contenders from the onset.

Ahhh, it will be such a pleasure....Mr. Peters from Buffalo as well, Any goddamn Philly player :)
Leafs best line -"Grabs and Pohl's my Finger!
NOw all we need is to have LaPresse spark up those Pierre-Marc Bouchard for Koivu rumors.... once he gets resigned we'll have to wait for Marleau to waive his NTC.... only 7 more years Lecavalier???
i think that may be a little delusional. . . there's french canadian and then there's haitian french canadian. it will be interesting if he will be welcomed with the same open arms as any other home-borne product: i hope i'm wrong.
more importanly, while i like the guy can someone report to me how good a skater he is? how'd he fit in with pittsburgh and their style? love the deal at first glance but am wondering how he fits in and who he replaces. is begin out of the picture? kosto? what are the anticipated lines? it would seem that we'll have an abundance of grinders who can't play the top twwo lines. . . but again, i'm happy just want someone to characterize this for me while i lie in bed sick

Well, don't forget he did play in Edmonton, and they are a skating organization.
Leafs best line -"Grabs and Pohl's my Finger!
Good point - call that a bonus, it'll get the french hockey-language-police off Gainey's back. Maybe we can send Georges over to their homes. :)
... and I still say it should be called the fart line. Or they could play with Tlusty and call it the Lusty Finger line.

GREAT signing. The right price for the toughness we need - and the guy chips in now and then. Now Sergei can just worry about scoring goals. :)

LMAO...good point. And at 1.5 mil, at the going rate today, I don't think it is an overpayment. Georges has paid his dues around the league. Guys like that don't get "still wet behind the ears" contracts. This will make a difference for some of our ... ummmm .... more skilled players (didn't want to say "soft"). And as someone mentioned here somewhere, guys like Neil in Ottawa will have to look over their shoulders before acting like a jackass when playing the Habs now.
Looking at all the things that have gone on...we have acquired a productive veteran forward, we have re-signed one of our most important young stars at a level-headed salary, we have unloaded a skilled but not so bright center for another upcoming D-man plus a pick, we have shed a one-time useful (but no longer useful) one-trick pony goal scorer, and have added a feared physical presence to the team. Not bad if you ask me. Gainey may not be done yet, but even if he cannot get that one piece that every one seems to believe we need (and if it's Sundin I agree it's a piece we need) he has done a good job of improving this team for the coming season. No one, at least no one with any sense at all, can say Bob has done NOTHING!
I will never understand why Laraque is worth 1.5 mil...but atleast we got someone to protect our stars besides Komi and OB
~Listen to the rooster! He knows what he's saying!
There is no price tag on a guy like him, we won't be pushed around anymore. When Kovi gets nailed into the boards he won't have to get up and try to fight his own battles. Sergie Kostitsyn won't be dropping the gloves either. This signing is HUGE, and I'm sure many of you agree
Laracque deal on TSN.ca, main page:
All it says is:
Georges Laraque is heading home.
The native of Montreal, Quebec has signed a three-year contract with the Canadiens, reportedly worth $4.5 million. The deal includes a partial no-trade clause.
Laraque spent last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he tallied 13 points and 141 penalty minutes in 71 games.
Orginally an Edmonton Oilers draft pick in 1995, Laraque has spent time with the Penguins and the Phoenix Coyotes.

Where are you guys getting the Laraque thing? Nothing's on TSN or RDS as of yet.
Submitted by nightmare_49 on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 15:51.
Timo - Team 990 Montreal sports radio. It's offical as they have someone at the Bell Center.
I still say we should call it the Fart Line.
Is this GL contract true? If yes, at 1.5 million it seems like a good one! BTW, why did the Pens let him go??
~Listen to the smart dog!
I know this must seem completely utterly impossible.
But maybe just maybe, Laraques wanted to come to Montreal.
I'm crazy though so don't believe me ;)
Georges Laraque (born December 7, 1976) is a professional ice hockey forward, and a radio host for CFRN. He is currently an unrestricted free agent in the National Hockey League. He is an enforcer.

Grab my finger?
Now they just need a guy with the word "Pull" in it and they can call the line
grab and pull my finger!
The problem is, if they did that the Leafs ice would be all brown from the backup they have accumulated.
About I grew up in Park Extension, within walking distance of Dickie Moore's Dairy Queen on Jean Talon. Moore had a place on L'Acadie Blvd., and we used to see him driving around in his convertible with a Samoyed and a very dishy wife.
While "studying" at McGill University during the 1960s, I used to attend games at the old Montreal Forum. My fellow undergraduate reprobates and I would scramble up the stairs to get centre-ice spots in the top standing room section, where aged ushers didn't know or care what we were smoking.
I stood out in the cold for six hours to get tickets to the 1975 New Year's Eve game between the Canadiens and Central Red Army. With the exception of the birth of my daughter, the 3-3 tie was the greatest event I've ever seen in my life.
The Canada-U.S. Gold medal game comes close .... but I wasn't there.
I've been a professional journalist since 1974, when I joined the Montreal Star sports department. I've covered the 1976 Olympic Games, the 1979 Expos, pop music and MSO tours of Europe and Asia (classical musicians are WAY more fun to drink with than athletes). I wrote a TV & Radio column for 20 years and, since 2000, have written a City column for The Gazette.
The best part of being a Habs Inside/Out contributor is attending games at the Bell Centre. I think it's a great building: noisy, raucous and packed to the rafters with Montrealers and visitors who live for hockey.
And I still get goosebumps every time Michel Lacroix booms out "Accueillons nos Canadiens ..."
Having seen the Boston Red Sox win two World Series and the Pittsburgh Steelers add a couple Super Bowl titles, I suppose I can die happy ... but not before another Stanley Cup parade. And I'd really like my daughter to see a historic New Year's Eve game.
I like all the players. Covering baseball gives me a profound appreciation of pro athletes who aren't jerks.
My weltanschauung was summarized by the late great Bill Hicks when he said "all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves."
Have a nice day.
