Habs sign Laraque

posted by Kevin Mio at 16h01 EST on Jul 3

The Canadiens signed tough-guy Georges Laraque to a three-year, $4.5-million deal on Thursday.

In 71 games last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, Laraque scored four goals and nine assists, while racking up 141 penalty minutes.

I can't see why the Habs really need a policeman, but if you're going to have a tough guy, Laraque is the best one to have. He's big, he's bad, he can play, and he's not an idiot like McGrattan or Neil. He had a really good playoff in 2002, and seems like a good guy. Fearless. Not a bad pick-up.

Laraque is a waste of 4.5 million.........

The Habs need a tuff guy that can score a few goals.

Bad move Bob...........

This explains why Ford is junk bonds, lol

Also honestly, is Micheal Ryder worth the same money per season as a Markus Naslund...

LOL

What a wacky salary capped Bettman era we are in!!!

I am actually a fan of Ryder, but that site is a joke. I like especilly the poll: How many goals do you think Ryder will score this year with the Bruins:

The lowest category is 20 - 29.

A bit presumptuous are we, Mike?

Perhaps we should bring in Federov with the rest of the Russians and he can still put the puck in the net and set up the powerplay. Also Mark Rechhi was great with Koivu for years and i'm sure he would play his heart out like he always does. He was one of my favorite habs of all time including Lafleur ,Muller and Robinson. Demitra is still a great player and he would be a great addition as well. Is Naslund still available i'd like him as well. Or bring in another Fin to play with Koivu in Selanne ,one of the most potent scorers in the Nhl for years. He still has a year or two left in him and he still has a lot of speed and would fit in nice with the Habs.

At last...........why did it take so long for the brain trust to understand the need for a tough guy presence????????????????????????????????????

Carbo said he didn't need one as he called it team toughness and the Bruin's in the playoffs loved their topghness.

I LIKE IT!!!

Rob Blake to SJ

Rob Blake , the Kings must be on a tight budget cuz Blake was supposed to be signed to mentor the young studs on "D" , surprise. GM Lombardi must be having a fit but he screwed up last year with his UFAs'.

NM49 - The Kings have enough cap space to start another team.

24 - Good one i'm still laughing. GM Lombardi must be the one that Pierre Maguire was talking about that had a tight budget mandated by the owner before the entry draft.. So the foot wedge wasn't working today , no worries , you'll be lights out tomorrow. At least you can get out and golf , Carbo can't say that.

So far all things considered, this may be the best off-season yet! Tanguay will pay dividends no question, as will Laraque and Denis(Price mentoring).
And a quick look around the remaining UFA`s brings lots of availability beyond the Sundin, and Jagr`s!!!

Selanne, Recchi, Nolan, Forsberg, Sakic!!!, Peca, Chelios, Demitra, Shanahan, Straka!!!, Morrison, Federov...

Albeit most of this list are players in the twilight of their career`s, Sundin at 37, isn`t exactly a spring chicken, and some of these players would easily play for 2-3 million a season at this point, and with a little less then 10 million in cap space left, there are some good 1-2 years choices here!!!

The way its going you can add 1 or 2 millions more just to get those guys on your team. Ex : hey selanee we would like to offer you a 1 year 3million contract interested ? Selanee: You Crazy Micheal Ryder just signed for 4 years 4 mil and i scored as many points as he did in 26 games.... ill take 5 mil a year thanks.

ouch

Just got home. Habs made a couple of moves but no big fish. It's really hard to say what's up with Sundin and Jagr is starting to run out of options. Vancouver better grab somebody soon.

Grabovski - Unofficially, it's now Tanguay for Deschamps and Grabovski. Even without signing a UFA, I doubt that there would have been much room for this small centre on the Habs. Better to get something, although I was hoping it would be part of a bigger trade. A 2nd rounder will be a long term project for the Habs. I would expect Grabovski to light it up big time in Toronto. He'll get tons of ice and PP time. There may be some 'Ribs" type fallout down the road with this guy. Regardless, he can't play ahead of Lapierre or Chipchura so it's time to move on.

Laraque - I guess this means either Dandy or Tom The Bomb will be moving on. Laraque can't skate or take a regular turn throughout the season but all of our players will stand slightly taller with him around. Maybe some of the cheap shots will stop against the Habs. He also might be able to cause some friction in front of the other team's net. He doesn't fight much any more and may not stick around for the full 3 years but he'll be a help. Another 4th liner gets $1.5 mil.

You mean Greg Nemiz and Grabs cuz that s who Calgary picked with the 25th pick this year

This deal reminds me of our friend, HabsProfessor. I like this signing. We need someone to take the hits of Lucic or Chara. His presence can also stop guys like Hatcher taking advantage of our small forwards. Komisarek doesn't need to fight anymore. Good move!

Laraque doesnt fight too much anymore -its because everyone is afraid of him. Dont forget he beat Chara, not an easy task.

Dandy and Breezer will be first to hit the bricks ...

24- I'm surprised at your view on the acquisition of Laraque. I thought you would be another one who was happy with it, but you don't really seem to be.
