Donning flannel sacré not Laraque's cup of tea
'Hailed as franchise saviour one minute and not worth a pail of pucks the next'

It's likely you'll never see Georges Laraque in a Canadiens sweater, a curious case of a reporter willingly running himself out of town.
Last March, not long after the NHL trading deadline, the Edmonton Oilers forward wrote a column for the Internet site of RDS headlined: "Why I don't want to play in Montreal."
To paraphrase, Laraque wrote of the suffocating media-generated pressure that Canadiens players face in this city, of being hailed as a franchise saviour one minute and being not worth a pail of pucks the next; about how so many players enjoy fulfilling, productive careers only when they've been shipped out of Montreal.
The 26-year-old knew he would hit a nerve, but surely he didn't know it would be like drilling into an unfrozen molar. One thousand e-mails in a week suggested otherwise.
"That's what I thought, and to be honest, I didn't care what the reaction would be," said Laraque, in town this week to play in the Canadian ball-hockey championship for, coincidentally, a Montreal club.
"Because of what we make as professionals, we expect criticism. But there's a limit."
The fluently bilingual Montrealer played minor hockey in and around the city, then major junior in St. Jean, Laval, Granby and St. Hyacinthe.
A huge, rugged forward presence growing into his 6-foot-3, 245-pound frame, he exhaled a sigh of relief at the NHL entry draft in 1995, when he was chosen in the second round (31st overall) by the Edmonton Oilers. He has adopted that city as his home, and he's invested in it substantial time, energy, good will and cash.
Laraque saw nothing terribly appealing in '95, or now, about playing hockey in Montreal.
"I told people then that I wouldn't like to play here," he said. "If the Canadiens had gotten me, I would have come, not like Eric Lindros (who a decade ago thumbed his nose at the Quebec Nordiques).
"But I wouldn't lie like most Quebecers when they're drafted and say: 'It was my dream as a kid to be drafted by the Canadiens.' When you're a junior drafted here, you know that most of the time you'll have to spend six or seven years in the minors, and you know all the stuff you'll have to deal with.
"People were all over me just for saying that, but I've had players on the Canadiens shake my hand and thank me for it, guys who can't say anything because they play here."
Laraque's column touched off a firestorm of controversy in this province, filling the French papers and open-line airwaves with those accusing him of blaspheming the flannel sacre.
"If I had said I'd have loved to come to Montreal, I'm sure the media would have pushed to make it happen," he said. "I was their best friend: 'He's such a good player, the Canadiens need someone like him,' they said.
"But after (the column appeared), they all ripped me: 'He can't take the challenge, we don't need a crybaby.'
"Now I'll never get traded here, and that's what I wanted. It shows you how big a soap opera they make hockey. There are other things in life, but every time you read the French papers, there's a big drama about the Canadiens. I think that, after a while, this city gets fed up with one controversy after another."
As most have already commented, this will give so much courage to the rest of the guys... no more goons picking on Saku, Sergie, or punching Kovy in the head....unless they want their faces re-arranged. It will make everyone play stronger, knowing they don't have to bother with the fighting part. I'm really excited about this signing, I thought it was a major weakness for us last year, but not anymore baby!! Just think, for 1.5 million a year, the entire team has someone watching over them.... best money spent yet!!
I also can't wait for the first fight he gets in.... the Habs fans are already super-loud when cheering on the team, but the first time George "If you smell what LaRock is cooking" bashes someone's head in after they go after one of our guys.... I predict he'll get the loudest ovation yet!! Can't wait baby!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why does Sundin want to retire? His two choices are: make millions or be an electrician........that's right, he once stated that if he wasn't playing hockey he would have been an electrician. That's what his career choice would have been if he hadn't become a hockey player.
Mats, wait one more year, play with the Habs......an electrician you can always become later.....provided you don't tragically become colour blind!
An electrician?!? Amazing because my dimmer switch doesn't work unless turn all the way to the right. Can't pay him 7.5 million to fix it though... How many Mats does it take to fix a light switch?
i love the laraque signing but the denis signing is just useless i hope he stays in hamilton
this is totally awesome!! I like was so thrilled when I heard that!! HA! now people cannot say that the habs don't care about french canadians!! I think it's an excellent acquisition and that he will make big impact, especially in the playoffs. Habs are a smart team. Don't sign players for like a gagillion years and you know what, it will be those teams who will probably regret signing them for so long, while the habs will be seen as one of the smart teams who didn't do anything so dumb.
gohabzzzz
we've acquired 3 french canadians since the draft...
tanguay
laraque
denis
who's next?
no we've acquired 3 hockey playersL a hgh-scoring forward, a tough, rugged forward, and a good back-up/hamilton goalie....why look at race is you don;t have to
it's better than nothing!
nothing is better than denis though.
yeah, well denis is probably the worst out of them but he's good enough to replace Danis ( hahaha dEnis, dAnis..sorry). actually maybe not. But he's good enough for hamilton and I honestly don't expect him to be on the roster unless price or halak get injured.
What was that? The Habs don't have grit? Man oh man, what a size alteration from last year's model, especially if we prevail and land Sundin.

It's hilarious that Mr. Stubbs would dig up this article from a few years back (I do remember it!)on the occasion of Big Georges signing with the Habs LOL! And he asked for a no trade clause to boot!!! LMFAO so funny this is, but in all seriousness, he addresses a much needed element that has been missing for quite some time, an enforcer to protect our small skilled players. They will play like giants now. Good signing IMHO. Good job Bob. Can't wait to see him tune-up his first leafer ;-)
Keith - Last week the laffs put their enforcer on waivers , Kyle Wellwood, lol.
YESSSSS LOL!
Something you won't see too often this year, or ever. Chris Neil skating by the Habs' bench with that smug smirk on his face taunting our players.
The Habs just grew 2 inches tall and added 10-20 lbs. per player.
Laraque vs. Neil, love to see it but it won't happen, Neil 'shies' away from such confrontations.
Good to see you back Jim, how Clayton et al...
Just get Lapierre to get Neil going and then send in Laraque, lol
Everything is good, Herb. How about you and yours? Would you know if DD and Lee Hayes are still posting?
Lee occasionally, but DD hasn't been seen in a long time, too bad bacause DD could have worked his magic on that twirp we've been having it out with lately. Nobody could squash a troll like DD, some of his posts were legendary.
Herb
DD was the best. When he and Yeats were on their game, it was hilarious entertainment. I got to know DD better than most because we went to a game in Montreal(free tickets) the following Tuesday after the summit. He is quite the guy. I changed computers and lost all my e-mail addresses, so I can't get in touch with him.
Has Yeats been around?
Hey Jim, I've got Claytons email and have sent him an email with DDs address entitled 'DD's email address'.
Jim, I am in contact with DD. We became good friends after meeting last October. I have his email, and would love to get it to you. But you know I cannot post it on here. If you know of a way I can get it to you without posting it on here, or me posting my email on here, then let me know. Keep in mind this is fishing season, so Dave is a busy man. Yeats pretty much gave up on this site quite some time ago, but has been known to drop by occasionally.
Jay or JT would both have Dave's email, I would think. So if you are in contact at all with either of them, just ask them. I could say more, but if I did I would have to kill myself. Sworn to secrecy, ya know. One way or another, I'm sure we can get that info to you. I'll work on it.
Tommy
Ask DD if he still has my e-mail and tell him to drop me a line. I owe you a few beers if you can do it. And I hope to see you so you can collect.
Thanks.
Done!
Don't you fellas forget to come slumming if your going down the 401 this summer. yeats e-mailed me last week and told me he could not even get to blog on the site, he was blocked for some reason.
Will do, Ian.
I'm sure a smart guy like Yeats can figure out a way around this problem. I'll see what can be done.
I'm heading down your way in about three weeks Ian.
DD is infrequent and goes long stretches between posts, but Lee Hayes has been on at least once or twice a week.
sorry for giving GTC's answer :)
