Potential to the Max

posted by Mike Boone at 7h22 EST on Jul 8

In his Gazette column, Pat Hickey writes that Max Pacioretty is getting very close to turning pro.

Marc-Antoine Godin of La Presse concurs.

Also in La Presse, François Gagnon writes the Canadiens probably will play at home on Dec. 23 – a likelihood that may help them snap a winless streak on that date that goes back to 1979.

• Gary Bettman has ordered Brian Burke and Kevin Lowe to cease and desist from publicly urinating on each other. Darn! It was just getting to be fun.

• Todd Bertuzzi credits (or should it be blames?) Jarome Iginla with luring him to Calgary.

• Old Habs never die ... nor, evidently, do they fade away. Mark Recchi to Tampa Bay: one year, $1.25 million

What I find fascinating are the amount of guys who come out of the woodwork and claim I SAID THAT LAST YEAR, AFTER things have been done. It comes with alot of info on what they WOULD HAVE done in that case. EASY TO SAY after things happen... I would have kept Kovalev when everyone said he was a waste and should go. Look how that turned out. SEE HOW EASY IT IS AFTER THE FACT...

I dont know why you would like Sundin over Jokinen. Dont get me wrong, I like Sundin but with jokinen youre getting a few years. Sundin may come, odds are itll be one year, but after he goes, what do we have? We have no substantial first line centreicemen in-waiting.

The Cat's picture

I hear you. I got to disagree with you though, Ive often called Jokinen the nhl's best kept secret, so I got to stick to my guns. I dont think he was that comfortable in Florida -the problem there is Jacques Martin (play the system, play the system, dont ever take retaliation penalties -which he benches some players if they do), he doesnt let players play their game or with character. The senators are still trying to break out of his zombie-style of play.

SmartDog's picture

Not sure I get you.

IF your point is that there is a difference between stating your opinion - or disagreement - and being obnoxious and shouting people down. I TOTALLY AGREE. Too many people think vitriolic attacks are okay. They're not. I appreciate learning from people - being wrong now and then is a sign you're learning.

But if your point is that YOU'RE right and everyone needs to realize it and bow down, well that's the opposite of the first point.

AHH Serge Savard. I like him, met him and his daughter a few times. I remember my favorite trade of his...Chris Chelios for Denis Savard.

coutNY's picture

Wasn't Savard in plan clothes for the Stanely Cup series...

Savard didn't really change what we did that year. Second worst trade of the 90's after the Roy trade. 3rd worst is the LeClair trade, who made those?

sure he got Muller which was great, but he drafted for crap, which wasn't and set us up for the Houle years which really threw us in the crapper. Gainey is getting us out of the crapper, it does not happen overnight. Surely you can agree with this?

I understand your points, but don't you think you are neglecting to mention that Savard inherited a decent team while Gainey inherited a crapola one?

I recall seeing a list of players that Gainey inherited a few days back, and believe me you, it wasn't a pretty sight!

They should really allow you to delete a post. Sorry all.

Sorry, but that was one of the worst trades the Habs have ever made. A close second to the Roy trade.

I do agree with some of your points but i think your being a tad too dramatic with the whole "if gainey traded carey for a 10th round pick" comment. I also thought ryder should of been dealt at the deadline. Its easy to say he should of been packaged with huet but maybe the caps didn't want ryder. It takes 2 g.m's to want to make a trade. Its easy to bash the huet trade saying we should of gotten more but name a team who needed a goalie for the playoffs other than washington? You have to eliminate all the teams who missed the playoffs because none of them were gonna trade for a ufa goalie(especially their first round picks). So what team that made the playoffs last year needed a starting goalie? I'm sure gainey wanted a first round pick, but if there are only 1 or 2 teams that want him, well, what does gainey do besides take the best offer.

The only thing i don't like about gainey is that he doesn't maximize his assets. For example, i begged for gainey to trade souray at the deadline 2 years ago. After the deadline souray got like 5 or 6 points for the rest of the season and was about a -10(-3 in the last game of the season aginst the laffs. Even if we did make the playoffs that year we probably would of lost in the first round anyway. If he didn't want to trade him at the deadline, he should of did it before july 1st like nashville did with hartnell and timonen. I also felt the same way for streit this year, i knew gainey wasn't gonna keep. Maybe bob made some calls and nobody was interested, who knows, nobody does. I guess in short i hate losing quality players for nothing when we could at least get a draft pick.

I sat at the draft and shook my head when i heard the jokinen trade. I couldn't believe florida got so little for him and of course the gainey bashers were out in full force bashing away because gainey didn't get him. But don't forget maybe jacques martin didn't want to trade him to the habs (or any other eastern team) and have to face him at least 4 times a year. This wouldn't be the first time martin shipped a star player out west for a far lesser package(luongo for bertuzzi). Maybe gainey did make an offer but martin didn't want it. I doubt it though because gainey had his sights set on sundin and there is no way we could have both.

Its easy to be critical of gainey but just go take a look at the roster we had 5 years ago before gainey took over and you can easily see how far we have come.

showey47's picture

oops i mis-read your comment about jokinen

gfunkdoc's picture

I agree with your points on Souray and Huet. There was no market for goalies at the deadline this past year. Obviously Bob didn't just offer him up on a first-come-first-serve basis. And, 2 years ago it was obvious the Habs weren't going to make much noise in the playoffs even if they'd made it so, I also hoped Souray would be dealt to a team like SJ or Anaheim.
However, this year was a little different. After finishing 1st in the East it wasn't unreasonable to hope for a deep playoff run. So, I think it made a little more sense to hold on to Streit and Ryder in case of injuries or for added playoff depth, etc.

PS - I, for one, am not worried about Ryder becoming the next John LeClair.

showey47's picture

I wouldn't of traded streit at the deadline for the obvious reasons. I guess i forgot to add that in my much longer than usual rant. But i would of traded him before the draft or july 1st.

gfunkdoc's picture

Fair enough, but I doubt Gainey could have obtained much for the rights to an UFA. I suppose something is better than nothing, though.

Now this was a real good, quality post. I agree with most of what you say in this post as well.

We do not know all the information and you are 100$ correct about Huet.
