It is great news.
It makes him a perfect trade bait for any teams who seek goaltending help since they can afford to take in his contract.
Habs Goaltending Set for 2 Years
http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/hockey/canadiens/story.html?id=c6dd5...
With a one-way contract it looks like they plan on having him back-up Price. Otherwise they'll risk losing him on waivers.
Great signing!!! Good internal competition between the 2 young goalies.
Just to be clear...although I think I might have been the one to hand Higgins the moniker,"hands of stone", I still believe that he will be a 40 goal scorer in the next couple of seasons. He has such tremendous positioning, the hands will follow.
Go Habs Go
lately I've been late on a lot of habs news. but that's ok. I'm really happy halak signed and honestly there is no better gm than bob gainey.
gohabzzzz
Good signing by the Habs and I'm glad Halak decided to stay in Montreal. Halak & Price will compliment each other.
Anyone know if this is a one-way or two-way contract?
I think if it was a two-way deal it would be mentioned.
I would guess a one-way contract.
You call making a smart signing, hereby saving us cap space to sign our great young players next year cheap?
How do you figure that?
Apparently according to some we should have signed every piece of old garbage that came on the market this year like Vinny 4's team did.
Apparently he wanted to give the money to Jeff Finger but the guy was already taken.

SD - Rollie Fingers is still available. He has won numerous awards and has a ring. Meets all the criteria.
The Original 24 Cups
Now that's funny!
I don't get how it's cheap to sign a backup goalie to a low money deal :S
Yikes! Even if we give Gorges and O'Byrne a million each, that only leaves 6.5 million for him-whose-name-shall-not-be-spoken. I guess his options are running out anyway... maybe they'll sign O'Byrne for less than a mil?
O'Byrne is a player who has less than 1 full year of NHL experience. If he gets more than 1 million a year I'll be extremely shocked.
Time to sign Brisebois. Sign him cheap! We need a PP quarterback!
LOL
(I'm thinking this was a joke yes?)

I think someone needs to stop posting and watch more tapes of the Habs 40 years ago and get his DYNASTY on.
Wasn't that a TV show once upon a time?
Emma Samms, hubba hubba hubba
or was she on Falcon Crest, I dunno. Either way, Emma Samms was one fine lady. She had a mud fight one time on that show, man oh man.
"Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"
My vote is to trade for Warrener. Dandy for Warrener - we will end up paying $700k more for a solid #7 defenseman. If we have to trim more salary cap, I'd say thanks for everything Steve Begin (and his $1.3m salary):
Starting forwards (if Sundin arrives): SK74, Higgins, Koivu, AK46, Pleks, Kovy, Tanguay, Lapierre, Latendresse, Laraque, Kosto, Sundin
Bench: Chipchura, Stewart, or D'Agostini (if Sundin doesn't arrive, plug Chipchura into the starting roster, or BG makes another signing/trade).
Starting defensemen: OB, Markov, Komo, Hammer, Gorges, Cube
Bench: Warrener
tanguay played the point on the 2nd unit powerplay in calgary last year. He is a much better alternative then the breezer.
I know Brisebois isn't the best defensively but no one can take away the fact he can still pass the puck well enough and has a good shot. We should all remember how he excelled in the playoffs last year, ON THE PP.
He scored one powerplay goal and was a minus 3. He scored more goals on us than he did on the opposition. We would of beaten the bruins regardless if breezby played or not.
You have selective memories. :(
His playoff run was 1 goal (a game winner in a 1-0 game - http://i.abcnews.com/Sports/WireStory?id=4661361&page=1) and 5 assists. Pretty impressive since most of those points were on the PP, a PP that suffered because Streit couldn't handle the pressure at the blue line.
True, Breezer was -3 but I remember counting two times that he was on the ice when Price let in pretty weak goals. You know, the kind that Umberger was magically scoring on Price? Don't let +/- mislead you.
I'm not fond of Brisebois for his defensive prowness but there's definite value for his offensive ability and to be used as a depth defensemen. I wouldn't be howling if he'd stay around. Classy guy, loves the team, loves the city and had the balls to come back to a city where people boo'd him from.
Streit played with a serious injury which was revealed after they were eliminated from the playoffs, as did markov and komisarek. If breezer was so valuable, why has no other team signed him? He wouldn't even of played last year if it wasn't for gainey. I will give him credit for loving the team and city and wanting to come back even though he was pretty much booed out of it. But its time to move forward, the guy lost his job to both gorges and obyrne during the season. Other than the powerplay the guy is useless to us, and he did only total 11 points last season. Numbers i would hardly call powerplay specialist numbers.
Off with his head!
"Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"
Time to retire. Breezby can't do much now.
No kidding, he got what he wanted one more season as a hab. Time to move on.
Yeah, a lot of them have selective memories, if it wasn't for Breezer and the geezers we would never have made it past Boston.
And Price, I guess you just forgot!
