Crazy Gary's hockey league

posted by Mike Boone at 13h05 EST on Jul 9

He's got owners under indictment.

He's got a TV deal with a U.S. cable network that no one watches.

He's got fading defencemen signed to six-year contracts, 14-goal scorers making $4 million a season and goaltenders going for $12 million a pair, while supplies last.

Gary Bettman is CRAAAAAZZZZZYYYYYYYY!

This week's special at Crazy Gary's: A Conn Smythe Trophy winner who will make almost $1.5 million less this season than Michael Ryder.

At $2.65 million, Henrik Zetterberg is the best bargain in the $$$-crazy NHL.

There are others, including no fewer than six of Zee's teammates:
Tomas Holmstrom: $2.25 million
Kris Draper: $1.6 million
Johan Franzen: $942,000
Niklas Kronwall: $3 million
Chris Osgood: $1.4 million
Ty Conklin: $750,000

Salary sanity. Stanley Cup.

Coincidence?

Canadiens have four players who qualify as bargains:

Alex Kovalev:  $4.5 million
Andrei Kostitsyn: $3.25 million
Tomas Plekanec: $1.6 million
Mike Komisarek: $1.7 million

The rest of Crazy Gary's NHL All-Bargain team:

Mikko Koivu: $3.25 million
Nik Antropov: $2 million
Marc-Edoard Vlasic: $1.1 million
Torrey Mitchell: $750,000
Braydon Coburn:  $1.3 million
Dan Girardi: $1.55 million
Trent Hunter: $2 million (for the next five seasons)
Samuel Pahlsson: $1.4 million
François Beauchemin: $1.65 million
Tim Thomas: $1.1 million
Ryan Miller:  $2.67 million
Peter Budaj: $700,0000

Brenden Morrow: $4.1 (five years, $900,000 per less than Mike Ribeiro)
Stephane Robidas: $1.5 million

I would love to hear from those Red Wings players listed as to the pimary reason why they've decided to sign for less money and play in Detroit. My hope would be that their motivation goes beyond dollars and cents and emanates from some unique, core values and beliefs that they share regarding their profession, the culture of their team, and their innate desire to perform at their best all the time. Funny, these are the qualities that attratcted me to the Habs many years ago and were embodied by people like Beliveau, Cournoyer, Robinson, Gainey, Savard, Muller, Koivu...

It will be interesting to see how fans handle the departure of some of our favorite players in the upcoming years. With the CBA, we'll lose some to free agency at approx. 26-yrs. old because you can't keep them all. We had better get used to that fact.

and pick up somebody else's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

True. But I'm not anxious for the NHL to become like the CFL. Think of past Montreal teams and put them in today's context. We never would have been able to keep the same line-ups from any of those eras for a long period of time. There is a mercenary factor of which I'm not too happy about. But that's just my opinion.

and a good opinion.

I am no expert but aren't the excesses in the post lock-out era mostly the results of the Players Association's pressures and demands during the lock-out ? The negative aspects as we are weighing them today in Boones'blog seems less likely to be the results of Betman's work and wishes during the lock-out than the Player's Association' owns. For me the single aspect I found the worse was the lowering of the age at which players are now reaching unrestricted free agent status.... it went down from 30 to 27. Players at 26 are already playing the last year of their restricted free agent status and the clubs who drafted them might only get to use them from 2 to 5 years with the big club prior to that point. Too much players movement lead to a permanent state of instability among the league's teams,... roster stability being compromised it become more and more difficult to cultivate and maintain the sens of distinction and identity that used to separated one franchise from the others prior to the lock-out ... more uniformity among teams is to be expected in the long run... leading to less differentions, less colors and a toning down on the dramatic content that can exist as a result of those. Take Komisarek ... he is hardly broken in yet and we are just starting to get used having him with us... and yet at the end of next year he could go anywhere and suit whatever fancy he might have..... in my book ufa status should be pushed AT LEAST one year back to 28........ 27 is way too low and way too one sided to the player's benefits at the expense of the fans who likes to identified themselves with their teams..... and the distinctions find therein and not just anywhere else.

UKHabsfan's picture
I agree that the UFA age should not have gone to 27. 29 would have been alright and an acceptable compromise. But that was then. We have to deal with it now. With Bettman in charge there is almost no hope for the NHL - he is singlehandedly responsible for ruining hockey. People like Bob Gainey are the ones who should be runnig the league - they understand hockey first and foremost. It is in their blood. Bettman is a joke and all his moves just add to the weight of this arguement. He knows nothing about the game, he's not very good at business and he won't rest until every game ends up with double digit scorelines AFTER a shootout!

Bouleau Noir I think I would have preferred you negotiating for the owners than some of their appointees.

I look at this differently than you. IMO the excesses of the post-lockout era are the result of inefficient and poor management by the less-skilled GMs in the league. You can't blame the Vancouver Canucks $10 mil offer to Sundin on the lowering of the UFA age limit in the cba. Yet that offer, if Sundin accepts it, will be more likely to push the going price for UFAs higher than Michael Ryder's signing at $4-whatever mil. The top end will have a greater affect on the scale than the average. Kominsarek's UFA status next year is only an issue because he is developing into a Top 2 defenceman, so you don't want to lose him. Marc Streit hit free-agency this year and his loss is considered acceptable, despite his excellent production, because he's not a player you want to build a franchise around.

I think we (myself included big time!) are a bunch of cranky Habs fans right now who can't wait for the new season to start. It's a lot easier on us all when we have games to discuss. .......................................................................................................................................... "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p 191

Andrew Sharpe's picture
I'm not cranky at all. I'm super happy with the moves the Habs have made and even happier to be able to read about them as they happen here on HIO. I just get annoyed at Boone's habit of picking on certain players. Not a big deal and sure won't prevent me from checking the site every hour and happily reading each and every one of his posts. Now if he prints too many more anti-Roy columns we might have a different story :)

Habhopeful's picture
still about under three months left, unless you count pre-season which I wouldnt mind seeing cause I need my hockey fix...Its wierd that during the regular season eberybody would go into withdrawal when there'd be 2-3 day breaks during habs game and now we have to wait 4 months for another season of Heart-Wrenching, Nauseating (not sure how to spell it or if it's even a word)Ulcer causing hockey...IT SUX!! Put a cork in it and give me some news damb it! Just kidding....

Yup, sign Mats so we can all start talking about next season, for crying out loud! ........................................................................................................................................... Amen Boone.

I give up on this issue...time will tell and let us know how well teams have learned to "cover Ryder". I guess if that is what happened then he should have no success in Boston as he will be playing against all of the same teams. I'm willing to let time determine the outcome of this debate if everyone else is too.

it would be nice to move past this bullshit but it ain't going to happen. Get used to it because it will be re-played over and over again next year and probably for a few more. glad to hear your family is doing good, Rob

DD's picture
I think we're all just letting off steam. As you recall we had these same type of conversations about Souray last summer. (and Yashin, ad naseum) This story will mean nothing, when we're hoisting the Cup next June.

The Souray bashing was just as bad........the guy gave everything he had every single game. I think both Souray and Streit should pay royalty fees to the Habs for life for inflating their stats with our pp.

coutNY's picture
Or At least pay some of Markov's salary... he seems to be the constant in their good fortune.

Robert L's picture
They will both always say they enjoyed and appreciated their time in Montreal. That is a polite way, I believe, to suggest they miss it big time! ........................................................................................................................................... Kumbaya...Kumbaya....Kumbaaayyaaaaa. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

one can hope!

I'm a sucker for punishment I guess. Thanks and I hope all is well in EarlTown as well. I try but I can stay away for about as long as it takes me to read a totally unsubsantiated post bashing a guy who was arguably our best forward for nearly three years....especially knowing the long path he took to make it to the bigs.

I agree 100% Krob

krob1000, as per your request to cease the Ryder talk, I will abide by it. It has gone on too long and I will stop perpetrating any more discussion on my part. i respect that he is a favorite player of yours. Nobody cared when Boone made fun of Souray. Nobody cared when he made fun of Theo or Riberio. My only explanation for this outcry of pathetic Ryder love is that there must be lot of Newfie's on this site.

C-Dawg's picture
Me being born in Nfld has nothing to do with my respect for Ryder....I also live in the US (in Vermont) and have on other threads said that Leclair ( from Vermont) being traded was the best thing that ever happened to him ( look it up or PM me if you want to know why). Bottomline is Ryder played well for us for 3 seasons, and was asked in the offseason to work on his "all around game" which he did, and did fairly well. He forechecked and backchecked, went into corners and did things he hadn't in past seasons and improved his +/-. But, somehow, in doing so he lost his confidence in his offenive abilities. Add that the speed and success of "the kids" and Ryder found himself in Carbo's doghouse. Say what you want, but for most of the season while he rode pine, he never complained (at least not publicly) and worked hard in practice to try and get back in the game. Once the season was over, and it was apparent he wasn't in the Habs plans, he went out and found a new team, still never badmouthing the Habs. That's class, and as a Habs fan I respect that and all he gave us over the past four seasons and wish him success with his new team (except when he plays us). I also never trashed Souray or Theo for many of the same reasons, but have been critical of Ribiero, as his diving act and soft play in Montreal was embarrassing. It appears the trade has caused him to grow up a bit, but I'm still glad we got rid of him.

Chorske's picture
C-dawg: agreed about Ryder, see my post below. He was class all the way, despite the trade rumours and the crap he endured at home on the Rock (vandalism to his property etc).

Grabbed The Cup's picture
Last year when Ryder first moved into Carbos doghouse, there was a rash of new posters on HIO trashing the coach, looks they they decided to settle down here, maybe once the 08-09 season starts they'll move on to a Broons board.

Ed's picture
Boone never even had a blog when Theo left. HIO did not exist.

MikeL's picture
He referenced to Souray all year, I'm sure he did the same to Theo after he left.

Robert L's picture
MikeL, there is a bunch of them, and they don't like being called by that name apparently. Let's respect them like we would any other die hard fan. ............................................................................................................................................... "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p

C-Dawg's picture
I take no offense at being called a Newfie....and love Newfie jokes :O) But, if it's true that only Newfies can appreciate whar Ryder gave to the team while he was here, then that's sad.

MikeL's picture
oh really? well I was just using it as a shortcut. Didn't think it was insulting. But if I were to start a story with "there were these three guys, a frenchman, an englishman, and a newfie.......", then ya, I'd likely be insulting.

Robert L's picture
It's no biggie, man. I just find sometimes when you generalize, you can get jumped on pretty quick. It was just a friendly alert. BTW, some of the best jokes comes from Newfoundland. ............................................................................................................................................... "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p

Ed's picture
I think you like to be insulting. Robert has already told you how most Newfoundlanders feel about that term. Still you keep on using it.

T-roy West's picture
Holy Ed, relax man. I've meet very few Newfoundlanders who've found the term "Newfie" or "Newf" insulting. :)

Ed's picture
I would not advise you to go around shouting it out if you are ever in Newfoundland. Newfoundlanders find it insulting when it's used in a derogatory fashion, e.g., when it's used as a put down as MikeL does when he refers to Ryder's defenders, or the joke he started to tell. Newfoundlanders generally don't mind when it's used in a friendly way, but overall it has become very unacceptable in the province itself.

Chorske's picture
From what I can tell, 'newf' is WAY better than 'newfie', according to the many many Newfoundlanders I've worked with. I think they all would simply prefer to be called "Newfoundlanders" but that is too many letters to type. People will always find something to get irritated about. I've met folks from the Rock who get pissed if you pronounce "Newfoundland" wrong, or who get really tetchy when mainlanders refer to Newfoundland as a "maritime province". Which apparently it ain't.

MikeL's picture
Lighten up

May I ask WHY? it is insulting? I don't get it.....No one answered my previous request for clarification. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Ed's picture
See the explanation given by Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfie

Well, going by that, it does seem like perhaps some people might be a bit sensitive..... if Newfoundlanders can name a alcoholic beverage - "Newfie Screech" (a type of rum bottled in Newfoundland)." you can't blame people for using it, but I won't. Judging by Wiki, you should be most offended when Americans use the term. i think people just get tired of typing out or saying out the whole word "newfoundlander" more than anything else. But thank you. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

"Nobody cared when he made fun of Theo or Riberio" No, we just all joined in. Rightfully so I might add. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Andrew Sharpe's picture
I have been a proud Habs fan since age six but it never fails to amaze me how fickle other Habbers are. Ryder makes the All-Rookie team then follows it up with two 30 goal seasons. He never said one bad thing about your team and he never gave anything less than he had. He had one bad season and you act like he's trash. He's on another team now. Let it go!

Robert L's picture
He was never trash! It is just that his slide has to do with how other teams learned to cover him, and that is not the coach's, or the team's fault. ............................................................................................................................................ "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p 191

Ed's picture
Other teams learned to cover him, but still he scored more even strength goals than he did the previous year, while playing 12 fewer games, and averaging fewer minutes in the 70 games he played. I can't figure the logic in that. His production was down because he was not needed on the PP, where he scored 17 goals the year before. He had 1 this year, and that 16 goal drop explains his drop from 30 to 14 goals.

Perhaps because as a whole, our team got much better 5-on-5. Just an opinion mind you. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Robert L's picture
Very valid points made above. In truth, the team may have just outlived Ryder's usefullness to them. I still believe that if we had a more offensive third line center, he would have hit 30 again, but that line just did not play the same style. ..................................................................................................................................... "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p

That statement I can live with but to knock Ryder for a changed system and uncontrollable factors is unfair. Heck I will concede the powerplay grew without him but Ryder did nothing wrong and will have success if put into a position to succeed again. We have no idea whether or not the pp or top lines would have been better with or without Ryder so let's just let the guy move on in peace as his two best games were two of the most memorable games in recent HAbs memory......when it was time to step up it can't be denied that he did.

Considering he isn't a Hab anymore, I think you should let HIM go, and not react so defensive when someone takes a jab at him.

Are you a troll? "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Habhopeful's picture
Lol Hey you got it right this time! "If I wanted to hear from an ***, I would fart..."

I did? "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Habhopeful's picture
Yes, yes you did...Congratulations You've spotted your first troll...How do you feel? Haha "If I wanted to hear from an ***, I would fart..."

Do I get a prize? BTW, how can your current favourite player be Jason Spezza and your all time favourite player be Scott Stevens, what a contrast! "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Habhopeful's picture
I've always liked Spezza as a player, Now its more like Ovechkin cause of his intensity and his kamikaze style of play, but it has really died down as of late...And hell ya Scott Stevens Was my all time favorite player, I enjoyed watching him lay players out, Im not very old so I was never around for the habs dynasty days so...I've wanted to change that for a while but never came around to doing so but thanks I am gonna change that... "If I wanted to hear from an ***, I would fart..."

That's ok, you weren't around for the days of Jesus either. The inmportant thing is that you have faith in the Habs and that you never root for your favourite players to do well against us. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Habhopeful's picture
Hell NO! Thats when they become my most hated player especially spezza cause hes a killer against the habs... "If I wanted to hear from an ***, I would fart..."

Andrew Sharpe's picture
It isn't one jab, it's every post. You all treat him like he's a triscoloeurs Yashin. You got want you want, Gainey cut him loose. The classy thing to do is wish him good luck.

joeybarrie's picture
Wow, lots of love for Ryder. He didn't perform, his attitude sucked. Now he has a fresh start. Good luck Ryder, just not against us. I wonder how many of you will secretly be happy if he does well VS the Habs and will have alot to say if they beat us. Closet Bruins fans...

Chorske's picture
It was Grabovski's attitude that sucked. The only example of questionable judgement on Ryder's part was his paper airplane incident during the playoffs. Besides that he was a model of restraint during what must have been an awful time for him.

Infanteer's picture
How exactly did his attitude suck? Folks, Mikey Ryder is not Mikey Ribeiro. Indeed, Mikey Ribeiro is not as bad as the Ribeiro described on these pages. Previously Ryder was scolded on his lack of defensive prowess. What did he do? Improve his defensive game. I am on of those who hopes "he does well." Not against the Habs, per se, but in his career. He deserves that, if simply for the attitudes of yourself and others.

joeybarrie's picture
I know his attitude sucked, how do I know you ask. Well BG took a walk with Kovalev and his numbers soared. The team with arguably the best judgment in the world of talent and capability DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO SIT AND TALK. That's how I know his attitude sucked. He would very much be welcomed if he had done so Poorly last season. His numbers dropped by HALF.

He had a great attitdue, considering. I wish him the best. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

Andrew Sharpe's picture
Give me one example of how his attitude sucked. ONE.

Robert L's picture
When he was sat out, he only occasionally attended the optional practices. He hasn't done much to work on adjusting the faults in his game. He never attented off season skating courses. Latendresse does. Throwing paper airplanes down from the stands during the playoffs when he was sat out. Taking the team to arbitration each season for little reason and then settling for one year deals three years in a row. It is also said that he never raised much of a fuss when sitting out. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd have been kicking the coach's door in demanding to know exactly what's up, and what I could do about it if it were me. I don't know if all this qualifies for a player's attitude sucking, but I never got the sense that it bothered Ryder that he was slumping. He seemed to do little to amend the situation.....AND I LIKED THE GUY! ............................................................................................................................................... "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p 191

So when Ryder was 20 years old he wasn't working on his skating??? Please share where you obtained this information. Optional practices....."optional" they practice enough.....playing or lack there of was his issue (I am noptsaying he fit well into Carbo's system but his game is the same as it always was). I am quite surprised on your stance on this topic it is completely out of character for you to make such unsubstantiated statements....normally you only say what can be backed up but this topic seems to be different for you for some reason. O.k. that's really it ....geez I can't stop typing on this one....bothers me too much that people are ignoring plain and simple facts.

Ed's picture
You LIKED THE GUY! Ha Ha. That's funny, both you and Boone. As for the paper airplanes, I think that was a figment of Gagnon's imagination. He was the only person who saw this, in an arena with almost 20,000 fans, and in the pressbox where there were other reporters. SHOW ME THE PICTURES!

Robert L's picture
For the thing that he did very well, I did very much like the guy, but giving an honest assessment is another thing entirely. ....................................................................................................................................... "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock, Lions In Winter, p

There are none. That we know of, of course. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Maybe Ryder's contract won't be so funny when he, on behalf of the Bruins, shoves "this year" down Carbonneau's yap, so to speak. Might even wipe off the smirk.

DD's picture
We're a fast break, transition, skating team. He couldn't keep up. Don't get me wrong, I wish the best for Michael Ryder, but let's be honest here. He was a square peg in a round hole, in Montreal. He will do good in Boston, playing along side Savard, but we'll still skate circles around him and the broons.

Perfect description of Ryder at this time. Bravo. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Grabbed The Cup's picture
His first few years Ryders bread and butter move was to take a couple of strides off the side boards and fire one in from the circle, every time he tried that last year the shot was blocked. A change in scenery isn't the only thing Ryder needs, an adjustment to his game is necessary as well if he is to regain his scoring touch. As Robert l aptly pointed out last seaon, the league figured that move out, Ryder didn't adjust, so he's gone... get over it.

The Cat's picture
What you say may be true, maybe Ryder does have to readjust his game, but judging from the habs 2 playoff rounds so does the whole team.

Grabbed The Cup's picture
For a long time you were posting a lot of garbage here, then out of nowhere you seemed to change your attitude and began making more thoughtful posts, not always complimentary, but at least they had some substance. For the last few days though, every damn post you've made you take a little swipe at the Habs, do you realize that? Of course you do.

The Cat's picture
My posts are solid Id like to think, I never took a cheap shot at anyone, if I did it was in self-defense. I do take shots at the habs but I believe I have backed my arguements with facts. And just because Im a habs fans doesnt mean I cant look objectively at the teams situation.

DD's picture
Last time I checked, we won the first series. I'm pretty sure Mr. gainey has addressed most of our needs. Now all he has to do is get the big Swede to sign on the dotted line, and we're on our way to number 25. Ryder is gone, for 4 million scheckles, get over it. I hope you don't think we should have matched that offer, even if we could have.

Robert L's picture
I think the second series showed that Metallica should be in our goalies I-pod instead of Garth Brooks. ..................................................................................................................................... LMAO Robert. Good one.

The Cat's picture
Yes we did win against a depleted Boston team, and Im sure if youre a realist, youll agree that we were lucky to get out of that one.

DD's picture
Hockey is a game of attrition, injuries are part of the game. Excuses are for losers. I asked you earlier, do you think we should have paid Michael Ryder 4 million to keep him here?

The Cat's picture
Sorry about that, no I dont think he should've been paid, but there arent that many players worth that IMO...I just think he was kicked around last year, now hes gone, we can stop insulting him and kicking him around.
