Ryan O'Byrne has signed a three-year contract worth $2.825 million. He will make $700,000 this season, $725,000 in 2009-'10 and $1.4 million in the final season of the deal.

O'Byrne made $590,000 last season.

The signing leaves the Canadiens $6.8 million under the salary cap.

From the Mother Ship:

Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of defenseman Ryan O’Byrne to a three-year contract (2008-09 to 2010-11). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Ryan acquired a great deal of NHL experience last season. He is part of our young core of defencemen and certainly has the potential of becoming a very good NHL player. He is big, intense and his physical play are important assets for our team,’’ said Bob Gainey.

O’Byrne, who will turn 24 on July 19, will begin his second season in the NHL this fall. In 2007-08, he scored seven points (1 goal, 6 assists) and served 45 minutes of penalty in 33 games with the Canadiens, averaging 13:23 minutes of ice time per game. The 6’5’’, 228 lbs defenceman also played 20 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, posting eight points (2-6-8), a plus-4 differential and 49 penalty minutes. He was named to the Canadian AHL All-Star Team.

A native of Victoria, British Columbia, O’Byrne was selected in the third round by the Canadiens, 79th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He played three seasons with the ECAC Cornell University Big Red from 2003 to 2006.

Shawn Belle under contract
The Canadiens also announced today the signing of defenseman Shawn Belle to a one-year, two-way contract (2008-09). Belle, 23, was acquired from the Minnesota Wild on July 11 in return for forward Corey Locke.

That's one hell of a purse.

I thought Begin was washed up but to tell you the truth, the second half of last season showed me how important he really is.The man is a fighter and if Ryder had his spirit he would of scored 50 goals last year.

I hear TB is looking to trade for a Dman? Bouillon anyone?

H4me - When you trade someone from your roster it would be nice to have someone ready to take his place. Who may that be?

coutNY's picture

Bouillon would be a #1 or #2 in the TBL Defensive scheme. Carle is there best Dman, but is he ready to lead the Defense? Plus they wouldn't give him up anyhow. Why sacrifice a steady gritty stay at home #5 Vetran D-man in Cube to down grade for a a few $$$? We need this type of player to instill confidence in a young goalie. TBL have nothing to offer us unless they're willing to give up Carle... Ain't happening.

Sundin coming to Montreal with $6.5 mil left in the cap???...........................Forget about it!!!! Stay in Sweden Mats! We dont need no stinkin old baggage!

Dude, you are high. we have 6.5 in the cap, and can dump Dandy and sign Mats. As for old baggage he had 6 points less than our best player on a team that didn't make the playoffs and scored 31 less points than us. That old baggage will fit well around the Stanley Cup. And cause of your post you don't get to celebrate...

RetroMikey's picture

Come on, do you honestly thing Mats, the Captain of the Leafs (and our rival) in sports is going to come to Montreal?
Wake up! Smell the coffee!
I'd love to see him here as well, but we have to face reality that it will never happen.
He'll sign less to play half a season to end his career in Toronto than play for our beloved Habs that are contenders!
Mats will not sign for Montreal! Mark my word!
Let's concentrate on players who want to play for Montreal not ones that don't.

Good signing, he has money to put in that purse now hahaha, Just kidding. This guy is going to be a good D man.

I'm glad that Gainey got this kid signed. I hadn't heard mention of O'Byrne for some time and was beginning to think that ugly purse incident was going to be the reason he didn't get re-signed. In the days following that "scandal", there were a lot of posts about it, on here, but the most common theme, that I came away with, was that the Habs were a very conservative organization and they weren't going to let that unwanted publicity go unpunished. I'm glad I was wrong.

If you fit into the plans and act like a pro, you will be rewarded under this regime.
If you are a whiny ass malcontent that bitches to the press or leaves the team in a hissy fit you are gone.
See: Rivet, Samsonov and Grabovski.
Gainey and Carbo are slowly shaping this team in their image.
Shut up, play hard and be professional.

You didn't mention Kovalev, but he's the real barometer of how well Gainey and Carbo's experiment is turning out. In Alex they have an extremely talented player with a lot of tenure in the league. The fact of the matter is that many on this site would've put him in your list along with Rivet, Samsonov, and Grabovski, but the fact that he turned his entire approach to the game around speaks volumes about the job these two men (along with the rest of their staff) is doing with our beloved Bleu Blanc Rouge!

time to trade Dandy and Begin to free up some more cap room for Mats.

Perhaps. But I wouldn't dump Begin untill I was satisfied that Mats was seriously considering this as a place to be in the event he doesn't retire. At this time there's four or five possibilities with Montreal being one of them. I assume only Mats knows where Montreal sits on that pecking order. Begin can be a very usefull player. Yeah, he took some dumb penalties but Lapiere has to show me a lot more if I'm to believe he can bring to the table what Begin can.

GO HABS.

Habtroll's picture

GRRR...Good Idea to trade dandylocks...Who needs extra sticks or tape though? Begin Is still a big part of the 3rd or 4th lines, you can't rely on lats or lap. Begin has heart, that's what we need.

Mats or another couple of decent names better come to Montreal before the start of the year or the Habs may....struggle.

GRRR....Habs Rule.....sometimes suck. GRRRRR...here's why...

Who would replace Begin as the 4th line left winger?

The Original 24 Cups

G-Man's picture

Hard to say. Perhaps, Stewart?

Gilbert
2008/09 is the season of the Habs

G-Man - I agree, it's hard to say. The difference between the two is about $700000 grand. Stewart is one year removed from the the ECHL. He played the one game against the Laffs and looked fine but who's to know, it was a meaningless game. Stewart may be better suited playing in Hamilton and then being called up later in the year. Dandy certainly goes before Begin, then we have to see about signing another defenseman. Of course we could waive Begin and then sign the 7th defenseman and use Lapierre/Chipchura on the wing. Ultimately, it all ties into Sundin. If he doesn't come to town, then there's no point in trading Begin.

The Original 24 Cups

Time to trade Begin, if you can, just because it's the right thing to do. I mean, how many season-crippling penalties are you willing to suffer because of him? Four minutes in the crucial game of the '06-07 campaign against the leafs after freaking Ryder scores a hatty? Killing us in Game 4 against the Flyers last season with a DFP (fill in the blanks), after a heroic comeback. I have him to go. Smart hockey players are usually better than dumb hockey players!

coutNY's picture

Begin wasn't the reason we were beat in '06-07, Maybe we should crucify SAKU for his tripping penalty that lead to Wellwood scoring the game winner on the PP, but we won't and shouldn't because these penalties occurred in the heat of the battle. It was a early return from a foot injury where Begin seem to re-energized a dismal stretch by the Habs in '06-07 Late December thru early March to even put them in playoff reach.

How easily one can forget that it was Begin on the 4th line that kept a struggling Habs team in the playoffs willing the Habs past a much inferior Boston team. This guy racked up a team leading 57 hits in 12 playoff games while only being penalized 4 times. The Reality is was a struggling rookie goalie and NON-firing Power Play was to blame NOT Begins one untimely penalty that got us eliminated against the Flyers. I want this guy, we need this guy, when going into battle because this type of player will give you everything he's got night after night. A LEADER BY EXAMPLE.

I agree. Begin needs to go. The guy has given his heart to the team and I love him, but the reality is that his body can't take a full season anymore (not that it could for the past couple of years...) and he's really slowed down. Sure, he's stepped up big before, and he's played well for us in the playoffs before (I was at the infamous Bergeron board sandwich game), but the reality is it's time to let him go. We'll miss the personality but not the on-ice performance of Begin with ample bodies to replace him
