The Maple Leafs have added an extra exhibition game to their pre-season
schedule and, with the help of longtime corporate sponsor Coca-Cola,
every ticket to the Sept. 22 game against the Buffalo Sabres will be
given away for free.
The promotion was announced at a Fan Appreciation rally that drew 700 to the Air Canada Centre this morning. They each got two tickets to the exhibition game, and the balance will be distributed through contests and promotional campaigns.
“The Leafs have the most loyal and passionate fans in the NHL,” said interim Toronto general manager Cliff Fletcher, a former Montrealer who should know better. “Securing the additional pre-season Leafs game and giving away the tickets to the Coca-Cola Zero Fans First Game is our way of thanking them for their ongoing support.”
Tom Anselmi, MLSE's executive vice-president and chief operating officer, predicted the exhibition game fans would be noisier than the usual Leafs crowd, which tends toward corporate season ticket-holders whose expense-account reserve belies Fletcher's assertion that the club's following is passionate.
Anselmi also alluded to Toronto's changing demographics. The city is no longer populated exclusively by people who look (and think) like Don Cherry.
"Fifty per cent of Toronto was born somewhere else," Anselmi said. "Every kid didn't grow up playing road hockey like you and I did. Half the kids grow up in places where hockey isn't what it's all about.
"We worry about the long-term future of hockey. We need to be continually investing in the growth of the game and the growth of this team in the hearts and minds of this city."
If such concern exists in the executive suites of the Bell Centre, it has yet to manifest itself in free anything.
not sure why everyone bashes these guys all the time... i think it's great that the united states' MLS (major league soccer) is getting involved to make a free hockey game. (sorry but i can't help making the connection everytime i see MLSE and MLS - both second tier organizations).
but seriously - getting fans to a game for free is a great idea to build support for your team.
Free tickets to a Laffs game? Still over-priced.
Does anyone else find it ironic that Coke "ZERO" is responible for giving away these tickets?
Regardless, it is a meaningless gesture from a pathetic organization to its small-minded, deluded fans.
oh and I just wanted to make something clear, Coca-Cola is covering the cost of the tickets so lets not make MLSE look like they are doing anything special
Sorry Fletch, you'll always be a putz to me....We, Habs fans are the most passionate and loyal fans in the NHL.....amen!
Just another marketing ploy by the Leafs to keep the spirit alive for the fans for many dismal seasons to come!
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"
lol!!! Oh that Cliff Fletcher makes me LMAO!!!!
Hey, wasn't that old goat supposed to be an interm general manager???
I seem to recall he said that at the press conference back when they announced him as an interm GM and he quoted that he would only handle the duties temporarily, not full time.
Is he not the full time GM? I'm confused.
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"
Well, he did say that it was up to the full-time GM to make a coaching move and then proceeded to do it three weeks later so I guess he is the full-time guy. Leave it to the leafs to hire an interim guy who decides a month or two later he likes the job a lttle too much. Should lead to some more hilarity from comedy central when the season ends. Another power struggle in Trawna. Anything to avoid putting the spotlight on their lousy hockey team I guess.
GO HABS.
I don't have problems with the Leafs claiming they have loyal and passionate fans. I have a problem when they say they are THE MOST loyal and passionate fans.
No "special" people on here yet, but give it time, it's like death and taxes.
Speaking of dumb laff fans, I was having a conversation with one a few weeks ago, a self proclaimed hockey expert yapping on about how Sid the Kid is bar none the best player in the NHL today. I disagreed and said "what about Ovechkin".....he said "who"?? True story I swear.
I think Crosby is a very talented hockey player. One of the best in the game today. Key words...one of! There are several who are better IMO, and Ovechkin certainly is one. Crosby has to take what he does best (playmaking and scoring skill) and concentrate on that. I think the Pens made a big mistake by hanging the "C" on his chest. Now Syd thinks he has to be everything. The ultimate player. He thinks he needs to show that he can be a tough guy (doesn't fool anyone, though) as well as utilizing his skills. With a few of his posse now departed from the team, Syd had better be careful about trying to shove his way around in the corners this year. Sooner or later, there will be a time when the refs are not looking, and the cameras may be down ice.
OV is the man. Only people who think Gretzky is the best ever would go with Sid. Bobby Orr was, is, and will be, barring some unforeseen phenom, the greatest player who ever laced on a pair of skates. I love the Habs immortals, was nicknamed Guy is high school, but damn that guy was a treat to watch!!!
Yeats
I couldn't agree more with you about Bobby Orr. I saw him play as a 15-yr. old with Oshawa in Junior Major A against The Junior Habs. This is when they were up to 20-yrs. old. The domination by him was totally insane. He had them on their heels when his team was killing 2 men shorthanded. He played with them like they were 12-yr olds. I have not seen anyone better than him yet, even when he was playing on one good leg.
Jim M - Was that the game that he scored 4 goals and had another one called back , that was the game i seen at the old forum , i agree 100%.
Bryan,
To tell you the truth, I was so bloody hypnotized by him that I can't remember. All I remember is that he wouldn't let anyone else touch the puck.
I think you can get it online, but one of my favorite hockey tapes is The Best of Bobby Orr. 90 minutes of footage that will pull your ass out of your seat cheering, regardless of your allegiance!
Jim: I saw him kill a penalty all by himself in MSG in 1972. He had the puck behind the Rangers net, a NY forechecker tried to flush him out. He went around to the front of the net and right back to where he began. We were all sitting in the blue seats, and most of the people around us were Ranger fans, but the whole damn arena erupted laughing!
Yeats,
Like Harry Howell said when he won the Norris Trophy. To paraphrase him, "I'm glad I won it this year because I have a feeling who is going to own it from now on."
Brian, that game could have been at any time, anywhere. Lanny McDonald tells the story of being in the same predicament that you described. Orr killed off about 45 seconds of a penalty with McDonald chasing him around the net. Orr had to slow down for fear of lapping him. When he got back to the bench very fatigued, his mates were laughing at him. Orr stayed on the ice.
Bobby Orr is at the level of Tiger Woods in my opinion.
The real shame is that the current crop of fans never saw him live. Gretzky was great, but Bobby Orr was playing in a totally different universe. I am the first to admit that you really can't compare players across eras, but #4 could suit up today and not look out of place.
Common Yeats, Orr better than Gretzky???? Orr was great.. the best defenceman ever for sure. But the only player good enought o be mentionned in the same breath as Wayne is Mario Lemieux. Size, speed, smarts, if not for his health problems would have challenged Waynes records.
Mr Watson
Go ask Sherlock Holmes. He'll set you straight.
Brian
He was also a hell of a fighter, btw.
That man was the complete package. The best, bar none! The leafs missing on him in their own back yard was infinitely worse that the Habs picking Doug Wickenheiser ahead of Denis Savard in 1980. At least, Wick had the numbers coming out of the WHL to justify the Habs' selection.
We must be boring the hell out of everybody by now but, damn it, the TRUTH must be told. I'm going to buy the dvd on him asap.
Nothing boring going on here. Last night, that was boring.
Has Mats signed? Are you a troll? While others, and they know who they are, choose to placate those jackasses, the way you defeat them is with rational discussion. They have no game and a good tet-a-tet leaves them on the sidelines grabbing their members.
You're so right about that, the unfortunate thing is in this day and age medicine is so far advanced in treating knee injuries etc., he could probably have played a few more years. I've also listened to debates on the radio about how he would match up now, especially on defense, players are a lot bigger and faster.
Good call, Yeats. But damn, there were some awfully good players in that day. Hard to choose the greatest. I do believe that had Orr not had his career cut short with the bad knees, he may just have been the uncontested winner.
Tommy
It is no contest. Remember 1976 in the World Cup tournament(?). While playing on one leg, guess who got voted best player?
Bobby Hull, and others, have always said that all the other stars were here(holding his hand at face level)in terms of talent, but Orr was up there(hand raised way above his head).
Hard to argue with you and Yeats on this one, and wouldn't want to argue it anyway. Maybe I just have a hard time admitting it. Orr...a Bruin...Cherry's boy!
I don't think there is much doubt that you guys are right, it's just that there were so many great players back then. The ultimate in entertainment, would be to take all the greatest players, in their respective primes, and put them out on the ice together. I think you have to die and go to heaven to have a shot at witnessing something like that.
Common guys I love Orr too but Gretzky is the man. Mario Lemieux is second in my book and then you can start talking about Orr, Rocket and the rest.
