Wow, I have to wait until March 8th to see the Habs play here in Dallas. At least I do, clearly I was wrong about the home-home thing with each team in the league.

I think that is for select teams, Habs play Van, Cal and Edm home at home!

You guys are lucky. The atmosphere will be even more amazing, no doubt.

PRESS RELEASE

"MONTREAL -- Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Thursday the signing of forward Max Pacioretty to a three-year contract (2008-09 to 2010-11). As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Max Pacioretty is a young player with a lot of skills who has the potential to play in the NHL. We are very happy to have him under contract for years to come. We feel he is ready to make the jump to professional hockey, and we will make sure to provide him with all the resources which will benefit his long-term development as a player,’’ said Bob Gainey.

Pacioretty, a native of New Canaan, Connecticut, completed in 2007-08 his freshman season in the NCAA with the University of Michigan Wolverines of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The 19-year-old ranked fourth in scoring with the Wolverines with 39 points in 37 games (15 goals, 24 assists), posting a plus-31 rating along with 59 penalty minutes.

Pacioretty (6’02’’, 199 lbs) finished second on the team in plus-minus (+31) and powerplay goals (9). He also scored three game-winning goals and registered 109 shots on goal. The left winger was named the CCHA Rookie of the Year, and was named to the College Hockey News All-Rookie team and the CCHA All-Rookie team. He finished fifth in U.S. college hockey among rookies in points (39) and points per game (1.05). He was also Recipient of the Mickey and Wally Grant Scholarship for Men's Ice Hockey.

Pacioretty was a member of the US National team which finished fourth at the 2008 World Junior Championship presented in Czech Republic.

At the junior level, Pacioretty played two seasons with the United States Hockey League's Sioux City Musketeers from 2004 to 2006. In his second season, he scored 21 goals and 42 assists for 63 points in 60 games, which awarded him the USHL Rookie of the Year honours and a selection to the USHL All-Rookie team.

Max Pacioretty was a Canadiens’ first-round selection, 22nd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

He just recently participated in his second development camp with the Canadiens in Candiac, and will attend his first professional training camp with the Club in September."

** INJURED RESERVE

Just taking a peek at the team roster posted at the Habs website. Obviously, not all 29 of the players (30 if you count Max Pacioretty:) listed will be on the big team (NO DUH!) and a couple of players have not been issued numbers (Trotter and Valentenko).

habs-13's picture

I know that Valentenko wore 25 in Hamilton this past year. And I believe he wore number 42 in a pre-season game with the Habs. Trotter wore 39 in Hamilton.

Not including goalies, our average team weight is 206 lbs.

Just throwing that out there.

oh and average height is exactly 0.04 of an inch under 6'0.

Take away Cube and the height average would go up a foot... JK

Another laff on the way out !

The St. Louis Blues have signed defenseman Andy Wozniewski.

Wozniewski, 28, skated in 48 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, collecting two goals and seven assists along with 54 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound defenseman has played in 76 career NHL games, all with the Maple Leafs, registering 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) and 81 penalty minutes.

I think the pro scout that suggested the Blue's sign Andy W. will be looking for a job very shortly.

MikeL's picture

Of all the Laffs last season, I don't remember anyone worse than him. Either him or Hal Gill were on the ice for every Hab goal.

This should put an end to any Shanahan rumours:
Canucks not negotiating with Shanahan

A U.S. report that unrestricted free agent Brendan Shanahan was offered and rejected a one-year, $2-million US offer from the Vancouver Canucks is inaccurate, according to his agent.

"I can tell you that I've never been approached or had any discussions with Vancouver regarding Brendan," said Rick Curran, who added that San Jose and Montreal are not in the mix either.

"We've only been having discussions with one team and that's the New York Rangers."

It is widely thought that Shanahan would have no interest in playing for a west coast team, but stranger things have happened.

I haven't heard rumors about Shanahan other than from people on here wanting him. I never really understood why everyone was so interested in him. The last thing we need now is another winger, not to mention he is slowing down tremendously. We have incredible depth on the wing, and only enough cap space set aside for the big guy.

I wonder if the plan is to have Max Pacioretty begin a conversion to center in Hamilton under the watchful eye of the organization. It would clear up a need in the long term.

2 cents - Actually i was also thinking that for the future but then again i haven't heard anybody rave about his puck handling and what i did see of him last year , though he was playing injured , that skill wasn't there so Maxwell looks like our future for now at center and Max will probably be forecast as a power forward which is also in demand. Many teams have talked about experimenting with big wingers trying out as centers in the minors lately so it must show there's a lack of quality offensive centers with size in the near future , it wouldn't hurt for the Habs to think that way also. Good point though.

NM49 - This point has been mentioned throughout the year by other posters, including myself. If he's not a playmaker than it's a waste of time. I'm also dismayed to hear that he might turn pro this summer. If he does, then it better be in Hamilton. He should not be on the Habs this year under any circumstance. There is nowhere for him to play and he'll just land up in the press box for half of the year. We're not here to ruin kids before their time has come. Another year in college is best for a variety of reasons.

The Original 24 Cups

two four - If he does sign he'll be in Hamilton for sure as he must adjust to the pace of pro hockey and develop into an all around player and work on the weak points of his game under the eye of Don Lever. Gainey has always said that development is a priority and he should be brought along like SK74 or even slower in Hamilton as he has to adjust and i see no advantage for players jumping straight out of college to the NHL , there missing something in their development and only a few can do that and many have failed. The Habs have learnt their lesson with Lats and when they signed him they couldn't send him down and the results speak for themself. I would rather see Max in Hamilton as an above average prospect than in Michigan as a go to guy. Besides he would be a nice ace in the hole , don't you think. Enjoy the British Open , I am.

MikeL's picture

I agree. I'd say Timmins and Gainey realize he is, at the most, a year way from the NHL. So they likely feel he needs to get used to the pro style and schedule, since they have such a light schedule in the NCAA. It would be awfully hard for a college player to jump from 40 games to 82 games in the NHL.

twocents's picture

I have not seen him play, so if he doesn't possess strong playmaking skills I agree with both of you that this may not be a good option.

24 Cups- as far as rushing the kid, I agree with the philosophy of taking time with young players and making sure they have the right opportunity to play when their time comes with the big team. But, after the glowing report from Timmins at the recent camp there must be a good reason why they are doing this. I would guess that the intention would be to start him in Hamilton. As you have alluded there are all kinds of reasons, including financial, to keep him in college. So, I have to assume there are some really strong reason for having him turn pro. Unlike the Latendresse situation it is not because we have big holes in the line up, as you have pointed out.

Maybe, they saw in him that he could become a playmaker and think that transition could best be handled by Lever and his staff. Or maybe they think he is so far ahead of the curve that he is targeted to make the Habs next year and it's time to get him adjusted to a heavier schedule. Maybe Gainey is looking at next summer list of Habs free agents and knows there will be space then. If he proves impressive in Hamilton, there are worse things that could happen than having to move someone to make room for him.

from what Timmins had said about him, it sounded like he was ready to turn pro and sign in Montreal this year.

I think you are right, he will spend most of this year in Hamilton unless he is going to get a regular shift in Montreal. He is still young and needs to play to develop.
