ALS fundraiser to feature Béliveau, Bower

posted by Mike Boone at 10h22 EST on Jul 21

Jean Béliveau and Johnny Bower will be the guests of honour at a Sept. 26 dinner to raise funds for the batttle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, popularly known as Lou Gehrig disease.

The fundraiser will take place in Cobourg, Ont., where resident Dennis Wmsley, a lifelong Canadiens fan, has been fighting ALS for more than seven years.

Habs I/O poster T.C. Denault, a frequent Habs I/O poster, e-mailed details on the event.

Over time Dennis life skill's have gradually begun to diminish but his
heart has remained forever strong. Despite his own ordeal, Dennis has
become famous through the ALS society for the amount of time and effort he
puts in, especially with regards to the hours of counselling he provides to
others stricken with this terrible disease.

In the past few years Dennis has been lucky enough to receive a personal
surprise visit in his home from his idol Ken Dryden, in addition to
sittting beside and conversing with Jean Beliveau, Rejean Houle, and Bobby
Rousseau at a gala dinner held in Toronto last December in Mr. Beliveau's
honour.

On September 26th of this year in Cobourg, we have organized a
benefit to honour Dennis (who sadly, is showing the cruel twists of his
disease more and more each day) at the Best Western. All of the money
raised from this event, as per Dennis' wishes will go to the ALS society.

Appearing at the benefit as special guests will be Mr. and Mrs. Jean
Beliveau and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Bower. This event, which I think would
appeal to many of the posters on the website (Cobourg, is located an hour
or so east of Toronto) still has tickets available. Considering who we are
honouring and the nature of the cause I am hoping to sell out.

I still have tickets available for $120 per person (which includes
cocktails, dinner, and a special 16 x 20 limited edition piece autographed
by both Mr. Beliveau and Mr. Bower. Whole tables are also available for a
discounted price. The person in charge of tickets is named John Ovens and
he can be reached at (905)372-9243. If you have any questions don't
hesiatate to email me as well.

Needless to say a posting on the website could go a long ways to helping
with our goal. As I said before the website has always been very kind to
link up to my articles on HabsWorld.net and I have always found Mr. Stubbs
and Mr. Mio very accomadating and helpful in their dealings with me.

I greatly appreciate you taking the time and thanks for providing a
wonderful website for Habs fans to congregate on.

I just wonder how many of us would like to support this cause.? If there are enough of us that wish to go to Colburg, which is only 20 min. past Belleville on the 401. We could get a special rate and get our own table. Let me know. Ian

Hey Ian, how is it you have two different avatars? Where is the setting for that?

FSLN's picture

Lawl, he has two different accounts, that's how! ;)

Look closely at his names associated with the two avatars...

I can probably make the venture down from Midland. If anyone else is interested along that route, I can get a 7 passenger van booked from work..Likewise for the summit.

I'd love to Ian, but unfortunately I'm going to have to work on that day.

I will, however, be heading out your way for your pool party this weekend. Where can I get directions to your place?

make sure you post the aftergame spot. If possible I'd like to drop by for hockey talk and beer but I'll never free up enough time for the full summit experience. By the by the Olde Orchard is just up the street from the Bell and they have awesome food and guinness.

Guinness IS food!

That's uncalled for. If this item is not worthy of your attention, why not leave it at that? Someday, someone close to you will be stricken with a debilitating illnes or disease. That's when you might wake up.

CrashTheNetCrashTheNet's picture

Chillax my friend. My mother beat cancer so I know all about illness. This was not a comment on the seriousness of ALS but rather a comment on a lack of real hockey news (Sundin), if my comment was not worthy of your attention why not leave it at that. Now if you'll excuse me zzzzzz

TommyB's picture

Well you just picked an odd place to post your "zzzzzzzzzzzz". There is another thread.

CrashTheNetCrashTheNet's picture

apology accepted LOL.

My company is providing Social Workers to the ALS Association in Vermont and New Hampshire. I have learned a lot about the progression of the disease and am happy to see Canadiens greats helping support it.
