Robinson hangs up his tie

Larry Robinson won't be behind th bench in New Jersey this season.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello told the New York Post Robinson had agreed to work one season in order to ease head coach Brent Sutter's transition from junior hockey to the NHL.

Robinson will remain with the club as a special assignment coach.

Hmmmmm, wonder what team could use a Hall of Fame defenceman on its coaching staff.

• Pat Hickey thinks Hockey Night in Canada made a smart move in hiring Mike Milbury.

• Martin Rucinsky is going home to play for Sparta Prague.

• Signings: Dennis Wideman, who made $600,000 last season, re-ups with the Bruins: four years, $15.75 million. Wideman will make $2 million more than Mike Komisarek this season, an injustice that will be rectified in 2009-'10 and for many seasons thereafter.

Daniel Carcillo, who led the league with a miind-boggling 324 PiM – and he missed 25 games! –  a Phoenix rookie, has signed a two-year deal with the Coyotes. Phoenix acquired Carcillo in the trade that sent Georges Laraque to Pittsburgh.

7 days until D-Day (Decision day for Mats) Will you be disappointed?? "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

GRR....This thread Is about one of the greatest D' s of all time and all of you are doing B.S. trivia?. Larry should come back to the Habs as coach, Carbo can try and teach the Habs penalty killing, his only specialty. I do love Carbo. That's not a knock, I would just rather see Larry as coach.....silly me I forgot, he doesn't speak french, darn. Stupid politics. GRRR....Habs Rule.....sometimes suck. GRRRRR...here's why...

With all due respect to #19 there is no way that a man who couldn't handle the pressure in Jersey could come home to Montreal and survive even one full season behind the bench. And no one knows that better than Mr. Robinson himself. Do you really think that the reason he's not back in Montreal is because of politics? I don't know if that would keep Gainey from hiring him if he was healthy enough mentally to give it a go but that is pure speculation because Larry wouldn't even consider the job at this point in his life. GO HABS.

D Alcorn's picture
Earlier today there was a comment alluding to Robinson coming to Montreal as defensive coach. Sweet idea, altho it is a stretch to conceive that, with coaching accomplishments that include having his name engraved on the Cup, the idea of playing the role of assistant to Carbonneau who, while equally accomplished as a player, is still looking inside from behind bench ... unless, of course, the Centennial season concept is enough to work some kind of magic. Which brings us back to the old (and getting older) Sundin-in-Montreal saga. I must admit that, when talk of this was first being floated, it held zero appeal for me because of my aversion to the extent of blue & white that is stamped on his @$$. This said, he does possess a couple of redeeming factors from where I sit : 1- his dream team as a kid, reportedly, was the Habs, and 2- he undoubtedly has the ability to make the team that much stronger, in even-strength play, on the power play, in shootouts, yadda yadda ... Another astute observation today, in my view, is that BG has adopted the correct stance in giving this guy space to arrive at his decision. Between the CH, Laffs and Canuckle heads, the choice is a no-brainer in my humble opinion but, then again, I do not pretend to be objective in such matters. Hasta luego ! Always Habs - Dave Mex

Canuckle heads.... Brilliant

At the risk of offending JB again, here's another one. An NHL team used to sit out the full two minute minor penalty regardless of how many goals were scored against it. This was changed in the mid 1950's because the Habs used to score multiple goals during the two minutes. With the new rule a goal now cancelled the penalty. Who scored the first goal after this rule was changed?

The answer is Henri Richard in an all-star game in 1956. The all-star was played before the regular season back then between the Stanley Cup winner and the all-star team.

Ed's picture
I would like to know who scored the first PP goal in a regular season game, after the rule change. I don't know.

joeybarrie's picture
AHHH back to the trickery.... See I like that...

joeybarrie's picture
Return question. How many power play goals were scored that season. Was it more or less than the previous season. AND FOR BONUS POINTS what was the Power Play difference for the Habs that year?

JB There were more PP goals, but I don't get the bonus points. I'd guess it was more though.

joeybarrie's picture
Doesn't look like anyone else wants to guess. I'm assuming I'm wrong...

joeybarrie's picture
My best guess, JEAN BELIVEAU, fitting if im right...

JB How many guesses do you want?

joeybarrie's picture
The Rocket???? whats the answer, no one else is in...

joeybarrie's picture
OK JIM, now you got it, GREAT QUESTION... This is interesting...

joeybarrie's picture
What is the number of Most goals in a game by the Habs???

16

Ian Cobb's picture
Gee Jim I don't remember that #. Who against and when do you know?

joeybarrie's picture
16 is correct march 3rd 1920, same season Newsy Lalonde scored 6 goals in a game. Don't know vs who...

Ian I hope you don't remember it. It happened way before our time. I can't remember against what team but it happened in the 20's or 30's.

Chuck's picture
Montreal beat the Quebec Bulldogs on March 3, 1920, in Quebec, by a score of 16-3. The 16 goals are also the NHL record. __________________________________

Ian G Cobb's picture

Ian G Cobb's picture
From the list below Robert.

The Teacher's picture

My Contribution to the Trivia session name the 2 players who won the Calder trophy but played their first games with a different team.

Robert L's picture
Danny Grant and Tony Esposito, both with the Habs! Sam Pollock was a fool. :)

Ian G Cobb's picture
Robert! what is this nonsense about Sam a fool.?

The Teacher's picture
Sam Pollock was an idiot. Look at those two horrible trades he made. Argghh arghhh. Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

Ian G Cobb's picture
Hey Teach-- You got my attention when you call the most fantastic hockey mind ever in the world an idiot. Must be something I'm missing, I'm sure you did not mean that.

The Teacher's picture
I'm being very sarcastic Ian, in posting the same type of verbal diarrhea as everyone's favourite poster does :) Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

Ian G Cobb's picture
OH.!

Ed's picture
In 1969 & 1970 too. The Habs must have had a lot of depth in those days.

Robert L's picture
There had more depth than Rita McNeil!

The Teacher's picture
RobertL, based on your continued attacks on poor Ms. McNeil, is it safe to assume you had a traumatic experience with her in your youth? Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

In my pool!

we have a winner

His Bill at the HOTEL????

twocents's picture
Here is one that is based on memory and I don't think can be verified on the web. So if you trust my memory... I am sure that others will be able to back this answer up. Which Canadiens player, who played on the 4 consecutive Stanley Cup teams of the 70's, played both defense and wing positions? I won't say what he was listed as on the roster. As a 10 year old I thought this versatility was very impressive.

Robert L's picture
Chartraw.

twocents's picture
See below...we have a winner....

Robert L's picture
I recall that Bowman, in games again the Bruins and Flyers would sometimes dress 8 defense and play Butch and Chartraw up on the wings to keep things calm.

twocents's picture
Yeah, handy guys to have around. If Dandy could drop the gloves he'd be more secure in his spot too.

Robert L's picture
Now that would be a frightful sight!

twocents's picture
lol

joeybarrie's picture
Well i wasnt born, so i have to guess based on stories and educated guess'... BOB GAINEY???

The Teacher's picture
I'm too young for this ***. J.C. Tremblay? Pronovost or Provost? Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

Robert L's picture
Pierre Bouchard and Jim Roberts didn't play on all four, but Rick Chartraw did. Hmmmm!

The Teacher's picture
AHAHAHA, changed your answer :P Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

Robert L's picture
Yeah, I read it back and went..."wait a minute....that wasn't what I was thinking".

twocents's picture
Actually Robert, Chartraw played on all 4 and that's who I was looking for. I knew that one wouldn't be a stumper. PS nice edit

Ian G Cobb's picture
You know, I smile when I read about Cary Price and how he is going to win the cup for us. People forget just what it takes game in and game out to preform up to the standards of this club playing in the NHL. He is going to be a good goaler in this league, but he has a great deal to prove yet at this level. He has had a wonderful minor and junior career. He backed up the great bulldog team to the cup in the AHL two years ago. But this league is the big time and he has a powerful lot of seasoning to go through. So good luck to you Carey work hard and maintain your focus. You have some large shoes to fill, since I've been watching this hockey club. Gerry McNeil, Jacque Plant, Charlie Hodge, Gump Worsley, Rogie Vachon, Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy, And Jose Theodore, To name the ones that brought me out of my seat every night.

joeybarrie's picture
Like i said, PRETTY STUPID ANSWER. Trivia Questions have some sort in interesting fact in them. That was completely useless Jim. I hope your smiling...

Ed's picture
Agreed. It was not, IMO, a trivia question. I will put Jim M on ignore if he has any more trivia questions. :)

joeybarrie's picture
Jim you have my attention for about 2 more minutes for the answer. ITS NOT THE QUESTION OF THE CENTURY.... I'm betting its something pretty stupid.

JB It's not the question of the century, but the answer lays down the foundation for why hockey is such a great game. Just like a baseball diamond, the dimensions are perfect for the sport. That is unless you prefer European hockey.

joeybarrie's picture
They also played with 9 men a side with no subs....I can see how important that was to our game....

joeybarrie's picture
I cannot possibly fathom, HOW the answer -cause thats how it fit in the venue. Is an important FACT to the foundation of hockey... Europeans play here, so I gotta say...No difference really...TRUST ME if the game was in fact 200 X 85...Or something else Nothing would be different today. Let's hope WHEREVER these amazing dimensions came from were written down correctly and not remembered from memory...

You sound really sore that you didn't figure it out. :) Perhaps you prefer something along the lines of " What team is looking to win its 25th Stanley Cup this year"? :)

joeybarrie's picture
Not sore that I didn't figure it out, Sore that it really wasn't an answer. CAUSE THATS THE WAY IT FIT... And a proper answer would be they did 200 X 85 feet cause there were 285 people present at the function.... Thats interesting. NO ONE IN THE WORLD could come up with a THATS JUST HOW IT FIT answer...

Chuck's picture
Actually, the's a great history behind sporting venues being configured around the size of the lot that the game was to be played. Take baseball, for example: in the beginning, the outfield fence didn't even exist; the outfield was as large at as the plot of land that they were playing on. Even after they started building larger urban stadiums, the outfield bleachers were often aligned with the streets that surrounded the property, and the outfield size and dimentions was whatever was left over. That's why Yankee Stadium looks the way it does, and why Fenway Park looks the way it does... 'CAUSE THAT'S THE WAY IT FIT. __________________________________

Chuck Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one.

Chuck's picture
Exactly. Who in their right mind, when designing a hockey rink, would arbitrarily choose an odd number like 85 for the width? Why not go with 90? Or 100? They didn't simply because there wasn't room to. __________________________________

TSN is reporting the following: According to a report on RDS, Mats Sundin will make a decision on his future on August 1st. At that time the former captain of the Maple Leafs will make a decision as to whether he will play this up-coming season or simply retire. This comes on the heels of Sundin shooting down a report in a Swedish newspaper that stated that he had decided to accept a $20 million, two-year deal from the Vancouver Canucks. Despite the rumours continuing to swirl, Sundin has repeatedly stated that he has yet to make a decision and several teams, including the Maple Leafs remain in the mix.

vaya_'s picture
will he actually sign/choose a team, or just decide whether or not he'll play? somehow i can predict him announcing he'll play, but not picking a team just yet. :D

Robert L's picture
Ahahahaha! He'll announce: I've decided to play. I've decided where. I haven't decided when to tell you.

joeybarrie's picture
If he does that, i will find him and slap him in the head. (And hope i can outrun him)

Ian G Cobb's picture
Well.! that was an interesting little adventure that I just got back from. Went sea kayacking across the bay of Quinte and got caught in a hell of storm. I could handle the rain and waves but the driving rain had hail in it and it beat the hell out of me. So I hit the water and turned my kayack over and I stayed under the boat until it slowed down. Got back in and bailed it out some and got back. Don't need a shower tonight! What is going on here anything new.??

Ed's picture
Nothing quite as exciting as what you went through today. That was quite an adventure you had there, Ian.

Ian G Cobb's picture
A little to much for a fat guy. But I love it. I go out 3or 4times a week.

Ed's picture
I have never tried it, but sea kayaking is very popular. It seems like a lot of fun, but also there is a certain amount of danger involved. I can picture you now with your kayak upside down, and you hiding from the hailstones. That was a very smart move on your part.

Ian Cobb's picture
Not that smart, I had no other choice, they were realy hurting.

Robert L's picture
What, no little inflatable floatie devices?
