Lean, with a side order of gravlax

The Gazette asked readers to suggest enticements that might persuade Mats Sundin to sign with the Canadiens.

Their ideas ranged from mouth-watering – a Schwartz's smoked meat sandwich – to fanciful: "a guarantee that the French media doesn't hound him."

Sundin is probably more of a Toqué kind of guy. And he handled Toronto media for 13 years (though it probably seemed longer).

How about $7 million, two wings named Alex and the chance to meet Red Fisher?

Steven Stamkos won't be at the Canadian World Junior development camp in Ottawa next week.

But P.K. Subban, who was on the team that won gold in January, will be there.

One rumour concerning Sundin heard on Toronto radio was that Sundin was
hoping Doug Gilmour would become a Leafs assistant coach (not happening he is staying in Leafs Management) and since it took awhile to decide what to
do with Gilmour & Ron Wilson is bringing in his ex-coaches from San Jose -
Sundin will now leave The Leafs and is now going to play for either Vancouver or Montreal......

i bet this is how it went with killer. its been known he has wanted to get behind the bench for some time but wilson and the shirts at MLSE said no and decide to give him something and honour his number along with that slob weisel clark to make him feel better.

i would be shocked if sundin went anywhere else other than TO. Its always been his nature to take the safe route. like so many posters have said , he could have jumped at deadline. Despite MLSE treating him like crap, he wants to retire as the greatest leaf ever ..it would be safe and he would not have to deal with HABS fans, media and in vancouver (who cares)

joeybarrie's picture

He is good, but the best leaf ever???? Far from it...

Chuck's picture

Regardless of whether on not he is indeed the best Leaf ever, most of those that have watched him during his tenure will consider him the best... and to Mats, that's probably all that matters.

Best Leaf ever? He DID get all three stars in a game once. :)

Well to all those 30 and under he definitely has been. His tenure has been better Wendel Clark and I also find that his longevity with the leafs gives him the nod over Doug Gilmour, who only played 6 seasons with them.

Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

yep, thats all that matters to matts.

That's because Wade Belak was a healthy scratch for that game, according to Glen Healy.

some cambells soup, with a side order of swedish meatballs should do the trick.....(+ 7 million)

The cherry cola is a nice touch.

You know, I was just thinking about my birthday coming up in the new year, at which time I will be 75. The one thing that is so great is now I don't have any Peer Pressure.!!

Since we're on the subject of food, what restaurant do you think has the best poutine in the city? For example, if you were to take Sundin to one poutine spot in an effort to woo him, where would you take him?

Hockey Socks's picture

LaFleur on St-Denis is by far the best in Montreal, but La Belle Province has surprisingly awesome poutines.

PPQB's picture

Decarie Hot-Dog. However, if he had the time to do it, I'd advise him to drive up to the Lac St.Jean region. They invented curd cheese, and the poutines you can get out there are enormous. $5 for almost 2 lbs. of the artery clogging goodness!!! Made with beefeater fries and a combination of fry gravy and bbq gravy...delish!!!

i love most food but you actually eat poutine.

C'Mon Matts, a vetran of your stature really want to live the life of a nomad next season? At your age is it worth the extra money?

"Twenty-five times next season the (Canucks) team must travel at least 2,000 miles to their next destination with only one full day of rest after its previous contest"...

Lee Hayes's picture

Hey Chuck, doesn't that pic of the sandwich get all of your pregame meal juice's flowing!?

Go Habs Go

Chuck's picture

Damn right it does! Hockey season (and an extra 10 pounds) are just around the corner!

I betcha I could make some coin at one of your gigs, if Deadheads had money.

I guess I'll have to go with the old stand by, free love, for a sandwich that is.

What matter most for players of that ilk is to know that they will be surrounded by players of talents and that they will be playing in a system that is supportive and geared towards the attack... if Sundin priorised scoring goals and playing exciting hockey as all top UFAs do when money is not an issue,.. he will come here,.. otherwise he will go elsewhere ... that is, if he decides to play at all.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture

Then the reason for the delay is genuine in regards to his indecision on his playing status. Once that is settled in his mind then he will turn towards his best option, us.

I suppose his ego was wounded by Toronto at seasons end (trade deadline etc) by their actions to discard the great swede...and everyone underestimated the massive effect that had on Sundin. So he rightly wanted to sit back and let the options come to him.

Hi Ian.. You will have to go for lunch.I was up town 2 weeks ago for the biggest sidewalk sale in Canada. It was on Saint Catherine street from Saint Marc St,to Jean-Mance.We decided to go to the Montreal pool hall on Saint Laurent St,for hotdogs we got there at 3:50 P.M they closed at 4:P.M they were mopping the floors nobody in there. We ended up at La Bell Provence at the corner of Saint Catherine and Saint Laurent for stemies they make the best french fries.

Wow, in my day they stayed open until the early morning hours. After all the drunks and hookers had retired for the night.

Phil_T's picture

talking about food like that when lunch hour is just around the corner wrong people!....

Habs fan in SF's picture

way to make me crave a smoked meat now. unfortunately, they don't have smoked meat here in san francisco. i'll have to settle for the next best thing, a huge burrito with carnitas ... with black beans, sour cream, and guacamole. that's one thing montreal needs to get down, a good taqueria. you need some mexicans up there.

xaverian001's picture

Hey, how about some more pics of players' wives/girlfriends today? Has anybody out there got an album they can share? Instead of trivia we can have our own Miss Hockey Universe pageant with all the hockey pucks out there. Rachel Hunter for instance.

Y's picture

Who cares about hockey when you can have a wonderful sandwich like that.
If you'll be serving those at the summit, I am most definitely there!
