It's in the bag(ish) ... sort of ... maybe

Have the salt shaker ready while reading this from Eklund, the anonymous (that pic is the only known photo of him) blogger at HockeyBuzz.com:

Some quotes from various sources who have emailed me this evening.
An Assistant GM:
"They (the Canadiens) finally feel they are going to get him (Mats). They are dying to make an announcement soon."
A Scout:
"People have stopped buying that the Leafs are going hard after Mats. Everyone is startin gto assume it will be the Habs."
A Swedish Player:
"Mats is preparing tonight for something that is coming soon. Many of us wold be shocked if it made it past Monday....and even more shocked if it wasn't Montreal."
A senior NHL person:
"It is all falling into the Habs lap. The Rangers are out of it and Mats does owe it to himself to play another season. To try and bring Stanley back to Montreal for the Centennial."

So is it in the bag? Do we have to wait till Aug. 1? Should a (mostly) respectable, (frequently) intelligent, (occasionally) authoritative Canadiens web site be propagating rumours?

Don't touch that dial.

• Boone weighs in.

Earlier this week, Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis offered his interpretation of the Sundin interview that appeared in a Swedish newspaper on Monday:
"What I took from it was that it sounds like he is considering two teams, Toronto and us," Gillis said.
But Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, had a different view:
"I don't think that is exactly what he said," Barry said. "Obviously, there have been some rumours particularly about Vancouver as a destination and he was being clear that it was a serious possibility for him, that the whole arrangement, his discussions with Mike, the offer, were all very good. But I don't believe he eliminated anybody per se in his discussions. He just said 'look, I have to get through stage one."'

The Buffalo News says the Sabres want to bring back Teppo Numminen, who is now 40, has skated in 1,315 NHL games — the most by a European-trained player.

And the Sabres have signed McGill grad Mathieu Darche – whose brother J.P. used to be the Seattle Seahawks' long-snapper. The Buffalo deal is one year, $575,000.

Does anybody out there in Habland realize that the photo of "Ekland" is actually a photo of Bosnian Serb warlord Radovan Karadzic. I hope that the Sundin/Habs info is a little more reliable than the photo of "Ekland" Go Habs Go!

As much as I froth at the mouth reading all this, it will make the depression that much worse should Sundin not sign with the Habs. I mean, I've played this through my head so many times... he's just got to wear the CH to make everything right in the hockey world. The problem is we've been let down so many times in the past by players chosing not to play here. So until anything is official, I'll remain excited yet skeptical. _________________________________ "Obviously it would be great, but they don't really hang conference titles in this rink. Doug, it will be interesting to see which direction the salary cap goes in the next few years. Certainly the GMs that sign players to 5 years plus for big bucks are gambling that the cap will continue to grow. If the economy continues to tank, the salary cap could indeed go down. But I can't see it going down by a huge amount. Meanwhile, Gainey's strategy seems to be to sign players for a max of 4 years. I could be wrong, but I don't think he has signed anyone for a longer term than that. The advantage to this is that it keeps players motivated to continue performing at a high level. If they play well, they will be rewarded. If they don't, it will cost them. Some players probably have an intrinsic competitive spirit and will perform at a high level regardless. We will see which approach is best.

twocents's picture
Excellent posts by Doug, MikeMcLaren and Bill H, great morning reads. The ultimate success of the two approaches can only be judged in a few years. Komisarek is the one player I would like to see locked up for a five or six year term. I think his style of play, skills and personality would make him a good risk. We have to remember that the current CBA is set to expire at the end of the 2010-11 season. It is likely not a coincidence that no Habs are under contract beyond that season. After then, given the new KHL, the cap and current rules may be history.(there is a player option to prolong the CBA for one year beyond that, but, that's it)

MikeMcLaren's picture
The NHLPA, if they like the current agreement (and if I was a player, I think I might dig it!), can actually extend the CBA infinitely on a year-to-year basis at the "end" of the agreement On the flipside The NHLPA can also terminate the agreement on September 15, 2009 by giving 120 days notice, which is why bonuses can't carry into next year's cap right now. From NHLSCAP.com: EXAMPLES: 1. The NHLPA may elect to terminate the agreement by giving notice to the NHL prior to May 18, 2011 [120 days prior to September 15, 2009]. Otherwise, the agreement remains in effect until September 15, 2011. 2. If either side does not notify the other of its wish to terminate the agreement by May 18, 2011 [within 120 days of September 15, 2011] then the CBA will be in effect for the 2011-12 League Year. 3. If the NHLPA or NHL wishes to cancel the agreement prior to the 2012-13 League Year, it must notify the other no later than May 18, 2012 [120 days prior to September 15, 2012]. Otherwise, the CBA will remain in effect for the 2012-13 League Year. /\\ike GO HABS GO!

twocents's picture
Very interesting, I did not realize it could be in effect indefinitely. As long as both parties are happy it can continue. It would be nice to get a long era of labour peace but, if the KHL increases it's competitive presence I wonder if the owners will pull the plug on the CBA at the first unilateral opportunity, which seems to be Sept. 2012.

Wild's Pierre Marc Bouchard signs 5 year / 20.4 million contract and avoids arbitration .. by Michael Russo .. Minnesota Star Tribune ..... http://www.startribune.com/sports/wild/25922544.html?page=2&c=y

24 Cups's picture
NM49 - Based on today's market, that's a good deal for Minnesota as far as Bouchard is concerned. Gaborik is a different story. $8.5 mil a year, long term is a risker proposition for a guy who is kind of injury prone. Don't get me wrong, he has tons of talent (with more in reserve) but I'm not sure that he's in the same league as some of the other young stars (Malkin, Vinny, Crosby) who are signing for the same long, term coin. This is another guy who won't be coming to Montreal and that's fine by me. We can use the 8.5 mil in a different way. The Original 24 Cups

24 - He's not in their league as an impact player yet and may never be. Looking forward to seeing you at the summit , enjoy the Open.

doug's picture
I really think cap growth will slow/flatten and even possibly decline in the future, so the frugal teams without the incredibly long contracts will be in the better long term shape. I think teams like the Flyers, who were up against the cap this summer, are going to SUCK in a few years with these gargantuan contracts. 2009-2010 roster already: Briere 6.5M cap hit Richards 5.75M Gagne 5.25M Carter 5.0M Lupul 4.25M Hartnell 4.2M Timonen 6.33M Rathje 3.5M That's ~$41M for 8 players, with only one serviceable defenseman and no goalie. When supply wanes demand increases and prices rise, right? And lack of quality supply this summer led to silly, silly prices. Patience will be rewarded for Montreal, led by the most patient GM of them all. I love it. Gagne should lock up Komisarek

MikeMcLaren's picture
First off, Gainey has been doing an amazing job at rebuilding and restocking the franchise. He has been patient, he hasn't done too many things that could ever be considered rash and I have been a huge fan of his patient approach ever since he came to the team. I think you need to realize that although he's patient and setting the stage for the Habs to be a contender for years to come, that Paul Holmgren's doing the same thing for the Flyers. Both GM's are gambling. Gainey's gambling that other GM's won't try to swoop in and poach his RFA's by signing them to contracts that are too short and not negotiating in the middle of the season; Holmgren is gambling that he knows what he sees in young players, assumes they will progress on the same path they are now and also that the cap will continue to go up each year (is that a huge gamble, really?) What will Briere's $6.5 million cap hit look like in 2015 when his contract ends? What will Richards' $5.75 million cap hit look like in 2020 (!) when his contract ends? Is Gagne's $5.25 million cap hit going to be swept from the books when he retires due to concussions (a real possibility that Holmgren had to plan for) Carter's signed for market value that takes him to UFAVille Lupul is a gamble, but maybe $4.5 million isn't a big hit in 2013? Hartnell's good until 2013 too Timmonen's a $6.3 million hit, but he's a #1 D player in terms of quality and he's also good until 2013. Most teams are paying their #1 D guy that sort of money. Rathje may come off the books because of his pending retirement - at the very least he will be 0 cap hit because he's not playing. Additionally, not all those players have no-movement clauses and the Flyers have tended to front load their contracts. That should make them easy to move later in their careers because you can find a team that needs to hit the floor for cap, but doesn't have money. Paying a guy $2 million a year when his cap hit is $6 million could certainly be attractive. The Canadiens seem to be more well-rounded and have some better young prospects, especially on D and in between the pipes. Gainey has blessed us in that regard. But we've only got 6 players signed for the 2010/11 season and NO players signed after that. We really won't know which approach is right for years to come, and it may be that they're both right! There's more than one way to skin a cat or win a cup! /\\ike GO HABS GO!

doug's picture
Insightful, interesting, and informative post. Many thanks.

24 Cups's picture
doug - great point, there are a few other teams that appear to be going down the same path. I realize that Carter can play RW, but I can't figure out why Philly has spent so much money on 3 centres. Why sign Briere when you know you had two of the best young NHL talents ready to become stars? Where is the long term planning? Our turn comes next year. Some real tough choices to make. Some Habs' fans may not be happy. Of course, that's the great aspect of a possible Sundin signing. It's only short term salary (cap) wise, yet we still get the immediate impact of his performance on the ice. The Original 24 Cups

Robert L's picture
The explanation for the cash spent on centres might have to do with their state rivals lining up Crosby, Malkin, and Staal. That's the measuring stick for now, and also the main reason the Habs need Sundin to jump aboard.

Montreal ranks high this off season. People realize how good of a job Gainey has done with our team, and that we have a really good chance this year. All of this without Sundin.

...."a really good good chance this year" to what? ....make the playoffs again....??? That was a great season past round one......after years of nothing much to watch after the regular season ends...If Sundin retires or chooses to play but not in Montreal, exactly what should we expect for the success of the team next season, except maybe for sure more than a few millions extra in the the team owner(s)pockets if Mats retires or does not sign with Montreal.....

The Montreal Canadiens have announced the signing of centreman Yanick Lehoux to a one-year contract. A native of Montreal, Lehoux split the 2006-07 season between the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL and Khimik/Mytischi of the Russian Superleague. The 6-foot, 200-pound forward was selected 86th overall in the 2000 NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

This guys got the stats, plenty of goals, assists. 2 goals and 3 assts in 10 games for the Coyotes, and 73 point in 72 games with the Rampage in the AHL. Leading scorer for Baie Comeau in the Q. But Ive never heard or seen him. There has got to be some story...

Another forward for Hamilton that can play here in a pinch however last count I made, we had 15 forwards signed for there but only 5 defenseman.

vaya_'s picture
He had some great seasons in the AHL, and he's probably an ideal replacement for Corey Locke. I think he had an injury this season that slowed him down, but he should be poised to have a good season in Hamilton. Some have said he's a potential top AHL scorer, which would be a definite plus for the Dogs. He may one day wear the bleu/blanc/rouge, but either way it's great to build a potential Calder Cup farm team. It paid dividends for Price, Lapierre, and the other kids 2 seasons ago.

You are bad! The words "The Montreal Canadiens have announced the signing of..." should be reserved for only very special announcements, such as one Mats Sundin, at least until that particular situation has been resolved. Given you handle, I suspect that this was done deliberately. :-)

One of his Q awards was an athlete/academic one. Gainey takes a lot of college kids. He would fall under the kind of players Gainey looks for.

Habs fan in SF's picture
despite the decent numbers in the AHL, he looks like a career minor leaguer to me.

showey47's picture
4 points in 10 nhl games isn't bad. Considering it was probably all 4th line duty. Chances are he is a depth move for hamilton but he is a right handed center, something we don't have. He may challenge the chipper for the 4th line center position.

Habs fan in SF's picture
i wouldn't say 32 pts over 80 games is that great. the only concern i have is despite putting up good numbers in the AHL he was never really given a shot with pheonix or los angeles - and i would think any guy with good talent would have been given a good opportunity. i wouldn't say 10 NHL games with those clubs over several seasons is saying much about this kid.

Habs fan in SF's picture
what i mean by 32 pts is i used his 4pts / 10 games and made a projection of what it would be over 80 games (4 x 8).
