Canucks' Plan V?

Vancouver may trade for Antoine Vermette if they don't land Mats Sundin.

From the Vancouver Province, based on an Ottawa Sun story:

According to a report in the Ottawa Sun, the Canucks have kicked the tires on a deal for the 26-year-old restricted free agent who scored 53 points (24-29) in 81 games last season for Ottawa.
Vermette will go to salary arbitration at the end of July and the Senators are apparently concerned he may be awarded $2.5 to $3 million.
The other reason the Sens might be willing to part with the second-line scoring of Vermette is they are desperate to add some offence to their back end. GM Brian Murray tried to get free-agent offensive defenceman Brian Campbell, but he signed with Chicago.
Canucks defencemen Sami Salo and Kevin Bieksa have had their names thrown out as possibilities to be included in a potential deal.

Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated reports Brandan Shanahan will be back for another season:

Shanahan, a free agent, is seeking a one-year contract. If a deal with the Rangers can't be worked out -- and currently New York is his only focus -- he would be willing to listen to offers from other teams. He already has deflected off-ice offers, including from media outlets.

John Tortorella meets Garth Snow tomorrow.

Islanders' players won't hate him until Monday.

Tortorella may not be in a big rush to resume coaching. The remaining year of his Tamba Bay contract pays Tortorella $1.3 million – more than twice as much as Ted Nolan was making.

The Gazette has a feature on innovative uses of the Stanley Cup.

The latest is Tomas Holmstrom lending the cherished chalice to his cousin as a baptismal font.

"Tomas came up with the idea when we were sitting in his summer cabin kitchen a week ago," Robert Sundstrom told Associated Press. "Me and my wife thought it would be fun to christen our daughter in such a priceless object." The Sundstrom's seven-week-old daughter, Alva Felicia, was baptized during a ceremony in northern Sweden, near Holmstrom's hometown of Pitea. Watching the proceedings were two members of the NHL's security staff, who kept guard over the Stanley Cup.

Beats the Kris Draper episode.

What the heck? Is this Céline Dion Incorporated? Am I on the wrong blog? Can we get back to business, please? If Vermette goes to Couver and Salo or Bieksa goes to Ott'wa... How does this affect US? If at all. In the race for Sundin? I would be shocked if Sundin, at 37 years old, wanted to be a loser in a DIFFERENT jersey. In the race for the Prize? Don't make me laugh. Bottom line: WHO has a remote chance in Hades of taking away our Eastern Championship? Cuz without seeming too gleeful or overconfident? I don't see NOBODY, foo'! Nobody. So bring us Salo and bring us Bieksa and we'll tear them apart TOO. Peace Out.

This is a hijacked thread, get back to your seat sir.

Until training camp, this is all we have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArbARCeam3I

You know what, in retrospect Freddy might have been the right man between the pipes, those wee shorts he was wearing may have struck fear in the opponent, keep them from crashing the net.

There is very rare disc somewhere with Brian May and Eddie Van Halen jamming out some Japanese cartoon theme song. It was a five track EP thing, with some good blues jams on it. The title escapes me at the moment....anyone know it?

ZepFan2's picture
Is it Starfleet? Edit: Yup, that's what it was. http://www.ultimatequeen.co.uk/Songs/starfleet.htm

Robert L's picture
Yes, I thought of it 5 minutes later. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Fleet_Project I was pretty weird hearing both Brian and Eddie wailing away, and trying to figure out who's playing what. Other than the Star Fleet song, they are both playing out of style, somewhat unrecognizable.

Moey, You were right! Queen Live at the Forum: Check out the logo on Freddie Mercury's hat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIdV4Y56gYM&feature=related Freddie knew hockey!

ZepFan2's picture
Ha. I worked that show and then partied with the three remaining members of Queen afterwards at some private bar in Old Montreal. Freddie was, "back at the hotel having his own party", according to Brian May.

That must have been one for the time capsule.

ZepFan2's picture
That it was. It was weird talking to Brian May just after watching him perform at the Forum. He was really cool though. The first thing I brought up was the guitar duels bands were doing at the time (Ted Nugent vs Frank Marino) and mentioned he should do something with Jimmy Page, he got this big grin on his face and said, "I'd like that very much". It was surreal to say the least. I still have the backstage pass.

There aren't many bands whose stuff has aged as gracefully as Queen's. I was a big Who fan growing up, but find myself listening to more of them and Zep. I'm just not that angry anymore.

ZepFan2's picture
Lol Age has a way of mellowing the beast in us.

Hope I die before I get old sounded like a good idea at the time, but not anymore!

ZepFan2's picture
Yup. Now it's more like, been long time since I rock and rolled.

I went to a Barry Manilow concert back in 1978 (I'm a chick remember), ole Barry came onstage in a Habs Guy Lafleur jersey, the crowd went wild.

I have to draw a line in the sand with Barry Manilow Moey. No guy from the Bronx could even listen to him let alone admit that he saw him live and be taken seriously again.

Moey's picture
I understand that, no self respecting guy anywhere would! But it was pretty funney, the forum was full of women going nuts over the jersey.

ZepFan2's picture
My very first concert was David Cassidy. Me and my buddy had no idea who was playing, we just wanted to see if we could squeeze thru the Forum bars for the Alice Cooper concert the next week. I've NEVER seen so many females in one place in all my life.

Moey's picture
Okay, here goes, I loved the Chipmunks as a little kid, then the Monkees, I thought David Cassidy was gorgeous. Jim Morrison was in the mix, he was the epitome of the bad boy. Once I was in my teens my taste in music was pure rock and roll.

And, that for one of the ten ugliest men on the planet!

Moey's picture
A classic, that should be the game ending song every time we win one!! A girly man, but boy could he sing.

He was way too sweet to be a leaf!

Moey's picture
When you posted this morning, I read it as a solo front man with the best pipes, then I read it again, BETWEEN the pipes...big difference. I quickly edited it, but I was cracking myself up.

I caught both posts, but poor Chuck got "double-deked."

Moey's picture
I know, people will be scratching their heads over his comment. I'll read things more carefully from now on!

Robert L's picture
Here's the video that killed Queen's career in North America! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hMrY8jysdg No surprise!

That would be a great background song if Mats actually does sign with the Habs!

Damn, if forgot all about that one. Today, it would have made them all the rage!

Bugs's picture
Aw gee, Couver wants Vermette? Adding on? Or facing the obvious? Namely, that if Mats won't play for his heart-stringed Toranna losers, he sure as heck won't play for go-nowhere, backwater, over-the-mountains, Western losers. "Yay, with Mats AND Demitra, we can make the playoffs!" That's not how we see things in Mtl...you ridiculous losers. The 2010 Olympics, oh, what an incentive...like we're gonna be cheering for Mats, you morons. So Couver can talk fool's money and Toranna can talk about loyalty. But in Montreal, we're talkin' Stanley Cup. So let's all of us stop being silly (and I'm mostly talking to the Couverites here) and let's do this thing! 98 to 25. Peace Out

Vicky or Stephen or anyone who might know. Dave Nixon tried to order two tickets using my computer, but after trying 2 or 3 times it still would not take the order. Anyone know why.??

SmartDog's picture
There are many possible reasons. The most common reason a transaction fails is that the address input in the form does not EXACTLY match the billing address. Check this first - two-thirds of the time it's the problem. There are other possible reasons, including (though less likely) an issue with your computer or IP address.... there should be a number to call for support if you're really stuck. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Connecticut Man1's picture
I don't know about that issue but we are up to 47 tickets requested as of about a half hour ago.

Once we have the numbers of tickets that we need to buy, you will be informed of the exact price and instructions how to pay for them. Once that is done we will ask who is participating in the tour of the bell center, pre game dinner, after game get together and accommodation. One step at a time will get us to the cup. IAN

I'd have to go through all the posts more carefully, but I don't think anyone said anything that was even tagentially related to Boone's intro. Congratulations! This is a truly momentus occasion!

Robert L's picture
A post so badly hijacked, it deserves it's own name!

From now on, if this ever happens again, the author of the thread has been "Vermetted!" And, taking a thread in directions that have absolutely nothing to do with the intro topic will be known as "Vermetting."

Connecticut Man1's picture
"Thread-jacking"... Commonly followed by a the anguished scream of the frustrated Blog author: "Don't hijack my thread!" Of course, they usually get over it, much like they do after a flame war, when they look at how much it inflates their website's stats.

It had to be done. I mean does any thinking person want to discuss Antoine Vermette or John Tortorella on a Saturday morning. It's right up there with VP running mates down here in the States.

In the midst of all this banter, we all missed that Mats signed! Naaah, just jerking your chains!

Moey's picture
We need a distraction, like they say "a watched pot never boils".

I beg to differ, I've seen paint dry on growing grass!

Good morning boys and girls, Some huge BOOMER'S and heavy rain is coming down at the present time, but should blow over in time to enjoy the backyard festivities this afternoon. If not we will move down to the harbor on our yacht . Should handle 25 people under cover for dancing and merriment.

How about movie analagies? "Master and Commander" versus the "Poseidon Adventure"?

Robert L's picture
"Deep Throat" versus "High School Musical!"

ZepFan2's picture
Deep throat, never saw it. Is that the one where they bring down Nixon? Oops, my nose just grew. And yes, it WAS my nose!

Robert L's picture
Yup, I never saw it either that time at the Drive In, in Odgensburgh, N.Y.!

ZepFan2's picture
LMAO

Robert L's picture
I thought it was hilariously ironic that Deep Throat...the Nixon one...finally comes out before dying a few days later. That would be like Jim Morrison going on American Idol and going, "I'm here....alive....Mr, Mojo Rising"... and then dying of a heart attack !

Moey's picture
"A Clockwork Orange" versus "The Brady Bunch Movie"!

Next season on HIO, when they get up their weekly merits for "quote of the week", or "link of the week", they ought to bring out the "best hijacked post of the week". That might be a tough one!

Has anyone even mentioned Antoine Vermette this morning?

Grabbed The Cup's picture
lol It is what it is, the old guard logging in to see if if any friends are about.

Robert L's picture
The old guard, huh! Who was it that said something along the lines of: "I'd never want to belong to a club that would have someone like me as a member?"

ZepFan2's picture
Groucho Marx.

Robert L's picture
Yes, that's it. Thanx!

It's either that or the pack of f'n trolls. Choose wisely!
