Boston Globe beat man Fluto Shinzawa looks at the summer's unfinished business, including the chain of events that will be triggered by Mats Sundin's decision:
First, the free-spending general managers of the league - some NHL personnel consider Boston boss Peter Chiarelli among this bunch for throwing $12 million at Michael Ryder - have put some clubs over or near the $56.7 million cap ceiling, which guarantees shifting of salaries prior to the 2008-09 season.
Anaheim will most assuredly move defenseman Mathieu Schneider, his puck-moving abilities, and his $5.625 million contract to a club that can absorb such a cap hit. Chicago will undoubtedly move goalie Nikolai Khabibulin's $6.75 million salary, especially with newbie Cristobal Huet ($22.5 million over four years) expected to grab the No. 1 job. Ex-Bruin Mike Knuble, entering the final year of his contract (a mere $2.8 million per season), might be up for grabs for a club seeking a power forward.
Second, Mats Sundin has pledged to make a decision on his future by Friday, which should let loose a torrent of activity for the clubs that lose out on the pivot's services - if, in fact, the big Swede decides to return to the NHL.

Frequent poster Sidhu sends a YouTube link to a lovely feature on Georges Laraque, produced when he was in Edmonton.

Interesting to hear Laraque talk about the influence of Jackie Robinson on his life. (1955 photo by Ralph Morse)

What are you doing at 7:30 p.m. on Boxing Day?
Canada vs. the Czech Republic at the World Juniors in Ottawa.
Complete tournament sked.
Re: the conversation Robert and a few others were having on the last page about Campbell's piece:
Anything identified as "opinion" (this includes not only blogs but also columns, op-ed pieces and editorials) is not bound by the same rules for factual sourcing as is "news".
As the word opinion suggests these are the opinions of the author and may be at odds with prevailing wisdom and/or the available evidence. Unlike in a news story there is no obligation to present both sides of an issue or write in an unbiased fashion.
So while this guy is off-base and, I agree, assumes an unwarranted familiarity, he isn't really pretending to be writing news as both his column and his blog fall into the category of opinion.
2 cents,
those hockey fights pics are still showing at

Haha look at #11... "Waaaaaaaa... Mommy, I want my Mommy!"
For MikeL who was asking earlier.
Howard Berger of Fan590 in Toronto has broken the story that the NHL wasn't quite happy with the Reebok jersey look and is apparently bringing back the third jerseys. The NHL hadn't made anything official just yet.
It looks like many returding duds will simply be the retro versions worn by teams prior to last years switch.
This was just added at Hockey Buzz about the Habs.
THE MONTREAL CANADIENS WILL NOT HAVE AN ACTUAL THIRD JERSEY NEXT SEASON. INSTEAD, THE HABS WILL WEAR A TOTAL OF FOUR DIFFERENT UNIFORMS COMMEMORATING THEIR 100th ANNIVERSARY IN THE NHL. THE 2009 ALL-STAR GAME PATCH WILL BE AFFIXED TO EACH JERSEY. I HAVE RECEIVED NUMEROUS E-MAILS ASKING ME TO POST THE THIRD-JERSEY PHOTOS. OBVIOUSLY, IF I COULD DO THAT, I WOULDN'T HAVE SPENT SEVERAL HOURS DESCRIBING THEM IN MY BLOG. AT THE MOMENT, THE AGREEMENT I HAVE WITH MY LICENSING SOURCE IS TO KEEP THE PHOTOS OFF THE INTERNET. IF I AM ABLE TO SHOW THEM AT SOME POINT, I CERTAINLY WILL

for those who live out side of quebec and will attend said summit ...they should be given a tour of Montreals finest entertainment areas.
Mike Knuble would be a decent plan B/C if Sundin doesn't sign here.
The only thing that worries me is his odds and evens injury history. However when he plays he is good and offers a bit of what we're seeking. He is +57 for his career, 6'3, weight varies between 216-230 pounds and I'm pretty sure he can skate. You put him with Koivu and Higgins and you've got the board and in front of the next presence that this line so desperately needs. He can play both LW and RW and he also is a right handed shooter. I want Shanny, but...at 2.8 million, Knuble is pretty good for the one year left on his contract I believe. A stop-gap for Pacs possibly?
Laraque will make them Pay the Price!
My concern would be that Knuble is too slow, especially for one of the fastest teams in the league.
Now we all know that Gainey has a Plan B if Mats Sundin does not announce his intentions to play for les Canadiens next year... as usual, we just don't know what those plans are though.
What I would *like* to see is a deal to acquire Mathieu Schneider for a draft pick to help Anaheim out with their cap situation and then hope that by some miracle Saku was able to talk Selanne into coming out east for one season.
I am more than confident Saku would have a career year with Selanne riding shotgun.

GO HABS GO!
Selanne would be plan B :) Even though he seems intent on staying on the West Coast.

Teach - As far as alternate plans go, Knuble and Shanahan would only be here for the one year, which fits our cap situation prefectly. Both play RW, but could also play LW if asked to due to injuries. But it leads to two questions. Where will Lats play if we bring one of these guys on board? (I realize that some guys on this site hate Lats but realistically he's still part of our upcoming season and long term future). Secondly, we would still have the problem of not having a big centre (or another experienced defenseman). A plan B/C need to address our needs, rather than our wants.
P>S> Are you going to the Summit?
The Original 24 Cups
I honestly don't have a clue with Lats, I did think of him, but was just throwing out some viable options that we could be on the lookout for should we not get Sundin. If we get Knuble it doesn't necessarily preclude us from getting that puck moving/solid stay at home defence-man a lot of people think we need. Schneider is making 5.5? so we might have room for him as well since a guy like Begin or Dandy would most likely be on the way out.
As for the summit, I have ordered tickets so my plan is to be there. I assume you will be there as well?
Laraque will make them Pay the Price!
Teach - I've ordered two tickets and will be looking at the total package deal as outlined by Ian. My other ticket is for Penelope Cruz, who will be coming as my guest.
The Original 24 Cups
Guys, do the Habs really need veteran wingers at this point. Why stunt the growth of the young guns at such a crucial stage. I feel Guillaume will make a good leap this year. I don't think that will be jeopardized for one year of an old Shanahan or Knuble.
I see it like this: If lesser team don't want them....
We need one for one year, barring the acquisition of Sundin. In my opinion anyways, but what to do with Lats is the question if we do.
Then again, I could just be saying anything as long as it is Habs related.
Laraque will make them Pay the Price!
The 100th anniversary is not making it easy for Bob to continue the push towards the youth movement. I too do not want to see veterans recently bought out or released from their teams. We have plenty of experience on the team except in goal.
I agree but, Bob will deal with the pressure just fine. If we don't get the Swede we should wait, see how this team looks over the first two months, assess the situation and then pursue any new big, strong, center opportunities that arise due to poor starts. I don't want any cast offs.
BTW, Hoegarden, I responded a page back... and didn't you have an avatar for a brief stretch this afternoon?
me again, just read you reply. I was referring to your original question which I figured was on Bowmeester's signing.
Ah... I get it now! But you know what? My original post wasn't referring to the Bowmeester signing. Habs64 had posted this,"Sundin to delay decision to September 1st.", and I was asking about it. Now it all makes sense.
my bad then, at least we saw the hot mamas, the cheerleaders and that #11 pic.
cheers
It was definitely worth the trip. Thanks
2C,
I did, Lapierre/Talbot square dancing. I was just testing those pics from the Sun-Sentinel. Did you see #11 ?
re Sundin; it's awfully hard for an old fart like me to picture him wearing the CH. If someone had told me as a kid that the Big M would one day wear the CH I would have never believed it for one minute but then again I was jumping all over the place when he bagged # 500 with a Habs jersey on.
All the comments made on Sundin signing with us are more than solid arguments (pros and cons) and Sundin sure knows how to drive some folks up the wall. We don't have much choce but to agree with you on the wait and see. He's like a blind date to me; you hope she shows up and if not there's a bar nearby for a bit of hunting.
LMAO. Ok, I found the pictures you were talking about too. #11 is friggin' hilarious... a real poster boy for the loafs franchise.
I am still wondering why you sent me there in the first place though.
right on.
Robert - my feelings exactly. I'm assuming that Lats can play RW just as well as he plays the leftside? As well, if we sign Sundin, then that means we also have Lapierre to use as a possible winger.
The Original 24 Cups
Robert, in my opinion if we don't get "the big centre" that could help us then we don't need anything else up front. We are fine on offence. We have added Tanguay to help out offensively, and Laraque's "presence" will also help. If we need an upgrade other than down the middle, I'd have to say perhaps more muscle on "D". Another year of development under their belts, some of the kids who joined the team in the last year/year and a half could surprise us even more. They certainly haven't topped out with their potential yet.
I totally agree. Every young player on the team will be better. 2007-08 was a great learning experience for them all.
He's not fast enough. Neither is Shanahan.
The whole team does not have to be fast. Witness Latendresse.
Laraque will make them Pay the Price!
Exactly. He stands out like a prostitute in church.
I like the analogy. The church needs more prostitutes!
Can someone please explain to me why there isn't a single reporter / sports writer / scout / coach / GM / agent outside of Montreal that says the Habs are in the running to land Sundin? What do they know that we don't?
And I don't buy the pro-leafs / anti-habs bias argument. It seems that no-one ANYWHERE thinks we have any chance of signing him. So what gives?
