O'Byrne cleared of charges

posted by Kevin Mio at 12h25 EST on Jul 29

Canadiens defenceman Ryan O'Byrne has been cleared of all charges related to an incident at a Tampa Bay bar, RDS is reporting.

He has recently completed a five-month transition period where he apologized to the woman involved in the incident, completed community service and was on his best behaviour.

It's good news for the blue-liner as a criminal record would have hurt his NHL career as travel to the U.S. would be extremely difficult.

Any truth to the rumour that O'byrne took the purse to erase cellphone pictures the girl had taken of Huet locking lips with her friend?

Gee O'Byrne is cleared. What a surprise... if you're a complete dullard. A fiasco from the start. I wonder if the old buzzard Red Fisher recalls his rant after the incident. Probably not, maybe Boone can read it to him.

I dont know what it is about Obyrne but I don't like him.

the important thing is the judge liked him, from what i remember tom k was with him,he has been around a few years and could have left with obyrne a little earlier.

Yeah the law is often interpreted differently for those who have money.

I agree with what you say cat,but just the humiliation of the story is punishment enough, its going to take awhile to live it down. He set himself up to be the butt end of alot of jokes.

That CBC story says: "He’s played his entire career in the East, the last 14 in Toronto, home of arguably the easiest travel in the NHL. For example, in 2006-07, the Maple Leafs left the Eastern Time zone twice all season, which is ridiculous in itself."

Ridiculous in the extreme -- we may as well retire the charade and move to baseball-style Eastern and Western leagues.

1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Well, baseball has two western based divisions, but they are in opposite leagues.

Laraque will make them Pay the Price!

It's great to read about O'Byrne, and the best news that I have heard in a long time. IMO he is going to develop into one of the Habs' best D men over the next couple of years, and has already made great strides just 2 years removed from college hockey.

G-Man's picture

Did O'Byrne make her purse her lips? Or did he make her purse fatter? I have a feeling it's the latter.

Elliotte Friedman's Sundin Prediction : Retirement 45% , Montreal 45% and laffs 10% in article Sundin's Future too hard to predict .. cbcsports ..... http://www.cbc.ca/sports/sportsblog/2008/07/sundins_future_is_almost_too...

The point Friedman raises here about Sundin spurning the Habs twice is both good and worrisome. He rejected a trade in the spring; he didn't jump when Gainey had exclusive rights to talk to him... Maybe both were on principle: He didn't want to be a rental player in the spring, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to play another year. If the latter were entirely true, why would he have asked to talk to the Rangers?

I guess my Sundin Hope-o-Meter dipped a few points on this latest revelation. On the other hand, he hasn't said that he didn't want to play for the Habs, either. Maybe I'm too blinded by hope to read between the lines, but I still feel like we're in the mix. For all the reasons Friedman lists, it's just not an easy decision for him: If he wins a Cup with us, he will have reached the highest achievement possible in his NHL career; however, his name will be erased from the leafs' fans' collective memories. This is not a Ray Bourque story--I can appreciate that he'd want to take the time to brood over it.

not a warm and fuzzy article thats for sure. agree his name would be erased from leafs fans memory at least in short term but who cares. gilmour and clark moved around and are being honoured this year so get over it leaf nation/MLSE.

Sundin shouldn't have too much trouble protecting his privacy in Montreal. And I don't recall there being much media attention in the Canadiens. Well, maybe in the 70's but that's long over. The media in Montreal are much more sweet and caring now. Remember how that photographer went in to see how Saku was doing after his eye injury? Even offered to take photos for the doctor to examine as I remember. Then there was that other photographer who asked Carbonneau to do his Trudeau impression on the golf course, private photo for Guy's album. Yep, can't see any reason why Sundin should be worried about his privacy. We're good to go.

This is the best article I've read on this whole saga yet ... and I've done A LOT of reading on this. If Elliotte is as much in the dark as we are that says a lot about all the rumours out there. Where has Bob MacKenzie been through all of this? He knows about as much as Elliotte and the rest of us so he is keeping his mouth shut.
