Bowman to Chicago

One of the most astute men in the history of hockey is bringing his smarts to the Windy City.

In another step in the ongoing revival of one of the NHL's great franchises, Scotty Bowman has been hired by the Blackhawks, who also employ Bowman's son, Stan.

"This is a great day," said Chicago general manager Dale Tallon. "It's an historic day for our franchise. (Scotty's) arguably the greatest coach in the history of the game and a great man. He'll take us where we need to go."

Getting off the Bowman topic and switching to O'Byrne for a sec. Since the whole scandal happened I've heard all the common theories of what happened that night in the bar but last night I heard a new one. I heard that Huet was in a back room with some chick and the woman that accused OB of stealing her purse took pictures on her cell phone. OB took the purse to delete the pics off the cell when he got caught.
I don't believe it myself because something like that would be all over the media before the cops had time to come make arrests.
Anyone hear that before?

bottom line is that some bads photos were taken. Ryan O had the common sense to destroy them. I commend him for his actions. He stood tall for a teammate. In doing so he looked stupid but took one for the team,in the end he got more ice time and huet was traded. This story was not what the canadians needed going into the playoffs. He seems to have gone to being foolish to being rather smart.I think huet owes ryan a debt of graditude.

Oooh! Scandal! Is huet married? If true, it sounds like a rook was taking one for the team! Not sure if it's true, but it does make sense - considering I had a hard time believing that an NHLer, although making the league minimum (which is more money that I will ever see in a lifetime), would consider stealng a purse for petty cash. What's your source?

Huet is married, I think that next season he might have to divey up abit of his new contract

I dont know if you get an answer since its late but it was detailed a couple of days ago on this site,by Robert L from the french press in montreal

So I guess it's Sundin's D-day today?

Still can't really get over what happened on that bus. What is this world coming to?

Good post.

Thanks to TommyB and twocents for the quick Bowman history lesson. Kinda thing you can look up on wikipedia, but doesn't make sense quite the same way as hearing it from fans.

You're welcome, you certainly got a well-rounded and thorough run through, eh?

Wow,just read my post, i gotta stop these late nights in matazlan

I like the fact that with BGL, the canadians dont need the refs to dole out justice now.Fighting is down now but the way respect each other when it comes to injuries down even more.I like the game decided on the ice and without alot of refs that seem to think they are the stars.

Definitely. I think Laraques brings an immesurable lot to the habs. We could see in the playoffs when it seemed Komisarek was injured, seemed our players were a little less brave.

Coyote's sign another enforcer for a depth role , they must have a goon coach .. AZCentral.com ..... http://www.azcentral.com/sports/coyotes/articles/2008/07/31/20080731yote...

its seems as though one of the greats in the game realizes the value that an enforcer brings to a team. I am sure that wayne knows the value of not getting cheap shots all the time

Good for Chicago! Detroit is still my favourite for West Champs but Chicago is going to be my darkhorse.

Im glad to see that great franchise is back in the upswing.

On the topic of scotty, i seem to remember that abit befor leaving montreal,he got some bad press when he signed a petition against a bill on language issues. When Scotty left I knew it was one bad move.I rank his leaving as on of the biggest mistakes the habs ever made.

mtl ace - That i never heard before.

Politics and hockey are a touchy subject in montreal as most people know.I do remember the petition he signed with a few other notable people. I thought at the time he was a man of character and put his name to some principals he believed in.I have always admired him for this, that being said, montreal lost a great hockey mind when he left.

He wanted the job Grundman had. Frankly, as a GM, Bowman was mediocre. His stint in Buffalo showed that clearly. As a coach and adviser, he is awesome.

Vancouver does have a pretty darn good defense and goalie of course.

I am starting to get a kick out of gilles, vancouver must need the publicty. He is keeping vancouvers name in the press, but is starting to look a touch foolish.

nightmare_49, I get a kick out of the last line, "I don't think this August first is a firm timeline," Gillis said. "It may be firm, it may not be."
Maybe someone should explain to him what a firm timeline means.

Scotty Bowman going to Chicago could be a very sweet story of an elderly NHLer executive finishing out his career with his son or a harbinger of darker things to come in the windy city. Just like this month's weather in Ontario, it could be a sign that thunderstorms are on the horizon in Chicago. Dale Tallon might want to buy a sturdy umbrella.

The Original 24 Cups

I think Scotty is doing it to help his son.He has similiar cancer but apparently worst then Mario's or Koivu's.

24 - Tallon is in good with the Wirtz family and your constant complaining about the weather in the GTA is something else. You should be happy cuz the national weather network instead of spending 75% of it's programing on the center of the universe is now spending 90% of its time on you spoiled lot, lol.

Well since it's a Scotty thread, I'd like to tell you one of my favourite Scotty/Little M stories. Scotty and Pete were like oil and water. Let's just say Pete liked to party and Scotty didn't.

These were the days when teams would stay in a city for a couple of days on road trips. The Habs were playing in Detroit, Pete's old stomping grounds and after the game Pete wanted to party. Nobody went with him, for once, so he went out alone. After his night on the town, Pete walked into the lobby of the hotel, a little worse for the wear two hours past curfew.

Scotty ambushed him in the lobby and asked him “Do you know what time it is. Mahovolich?"

"No, ask the desk clerk" says Pete.

"You're two hours past curfew. You owe $200.00, Mahovolich" says Officer Bowman.

Pete pulls out his wallet and skins off 200 beans.

Bowman walks away with a $#it-eating grin on his face.

Big Pete calls Bowman back, peels off another $200.00 and tells Scotty "Don't wait up for me tomorrow night.
