Red weighs in

Red Fisher, the Living Legend of Sports Journalism, is tanned, rested and ready to offer some thoughts on Scotty Bowman joining the Chicago front office:

"... while the Sundin story is all about money, Bowman's is all about family. It's about what really matters. It's about Scotty's son, Stan, 35, who's entering his second season as assistant general manager in Chicago. It's about a father supporting his son on the ice - and a lot more off it."

Jack's back.

Todd advises Canadiens fans to temper their enthusiasm if they think the addition of Mats Sundin would clinch the Cup. But he thinks the team will be better regardless.

Even without Sundin, the Canadiens are, on paper, one of the top five or six teams in the league - and they do need another impact forward to get over the hump and stage another parade. (It says here that they also need another stud defenceman and they will have to pray that Carey Price's psyche wasn't permanently damaged by the roughing-up he suffered in the playoffs but that's another story.)

hi all! i haven't been on for a long, long time(ever since we lost in the playoffs) went on a long summer vacation as well! it was great, but now back to my first love my habs! i have to agree with retromike, sundin isn't coming here to play with us!it's very painful for me to admit and say that but it's true.sundin will only play for the make me laffs.there was a time that i thought he would come and play for us but that went out the window when july 1st rolled around so if i was BG i would move on and add another impact player that we need, or do nothing with our 1st place team until the trade deadline and go for broke! but sundin as far as i'm concerned can go to hell !once a loser always a loser and that's sundin for you.

You Know what I think!!! Sundin is already signed in La bell provence,(Montreal) BUT the word is MUM from the Habs press box.Wouldn't that be funny if it were true LOL.

Habs Fan 4 Ever..

Wake up my dear Dee;
You had a dream.
Back to reality.
Sundin will never come to Montreal and play for Les Canadiens.

Robert L's picture

That would not surprise me one bit. He's asked for a calm summer.

RetroMikey's picture

Hope everyone had a great Civic Holiday!
Read the article by Jack Todd and it's assuring someone is on the same ship as I am regarding Putz...oops Mats Sundin.
We're a better team without him and he is not the missing puzzle in our quest for the Cup.
Perhaps the fans on this site will come to their senses and not hate me when I've said all along he ain't coming to play for the greatest sports organization in the world and jump on my ship.
To hell with Mats Sundin, let's drop the puck at training camp with the die hard players we have in our system who want to win a Cup with Montreal!

In my opinion, we'll sip the champagne next season, in which time I will finally able to crack my 1982 Dom Perignon, although I prefer Jack Daniels on ice!

Just get ready my friend, it's gonna be a "Bitch Fest" that will live in infamy on HIO. The only thing that could surpass would be have been if HIO were available when the Rocket got suspended in 1955. Those people had to riot with gusto, they couldn't just come on HIO and rant. As far as last year's rioters are concerned, dial-up went down after game seven against the Bruins. 'nough said!

RetroMikey's picture

Yeats,
How are you?
Yes, I'm preparing for the "bitchfest" buddy.
We're going to break the record for most posts on this site when the Swede finally makes it official and balks his decsion by not coming here.

He will sign with us, we will be a better team and we will win the Cup.

Mikey, you will be able to bug the $#it out of all your loser neighbours for the next twenty years. Then you two can share a 7 course meal. Six Belgians and hat, for Brian, six shots of Kentucky Bourbon and crow for Mikey.

"He will sign with us, we will be a better team and we will win the Cup."

My friend, I feel you will be like the husband who after a nasty divorce proceeding continues to believe that he will reconcile with his ex. He goes back to their old home to pick up a few things and interrupts the neighbor next door pumping her. Give it up, I agree with your reasons, but it ain't gonna happen.

RetroMikey's picture

I have to agree with you Yeats! Your post knocked me off my seat and LMAO!!
Anybody else want to jump ship with Jack Todd, Yeats and myself in believing Mat Sundin is playing games with Bob and not coming to Montreal?

DD's picture

Well my friend, this leaves us with an opportunity to enjoy a beverage of one's choice on the loser's behalf and all the gloating that goes with it in October. Do we have a wager?

RetroMikey's picture

You got a bet DD!
Smart Dog owes me a beer from last year.
Let's see..... a Jack Daniels (double shot that is).
Boy, I sure will be enjoying it knowing Mats is the biggest loser in this bet not you DD! :)

DD,
His heart is not with us Montreal fans but with the fans in Toronto. They can have him.
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Robert L's picture

His heart, his mind, have decided nothing yet apparently!

His loyalty to whatever hasn't pulled him anywhere as far as anyone can tell.

When he does get into the choices available, the Canadiens will still be an alluring option to him. It offers him everything the Leafs have ever been to him as far as a passionate city, and gives him a chance to win.

All the spiel about about him disliking anything about being in Montreal amounts to nothing more than speculative nonsense. Fletcher traded his rights here because he knew something about Sundin's feelings for the franchise, even after he refused a deadline trade.

As I see it, Sundin is deciding between retirement and Montreal. Any other evolution of this matter is secondary to what happens in discussion between him and Gainey when the moment comes that he decides to play.

RetroMikey's picture

Come on Robert, you honestly think he'll be coming to Montreal?
You should know better my friend.
Mats has been too comfortable in Toronto, let's say he's the Maple Leaf idol still to all those Leafs fans out there.
What I see is that if Mats really wanted to play, he would sign on the dotted line way back in June when we held his negotiating rights. Since April when his Leafs were eliminated from playoff contention, he's had ample time to make a decision. Almost 4 months Robert!
Also, why did he not waive his no trade clause back in March to come and play for us and have a chance to play for a contender?
As I see it as well and I have stated many times, he has no heart to play in Montreal. A Captain of the Leafs for many years will never jump ship and betray his loyal fans. Mats made his decison way back in March he would never play in Montreal.
I'm sticking to my firm belief he's not coming to Montreal.

Aye Chris!
Totally agree!

Robert L's picture

Mikey, let's put it like this, there is not a single thing that you've said on this whole Sundin affair that I found carried a feather's weight.

The past is completely irrelevant to any of this. It's all about going forward for Sundin, and much of his decision has do with how much he feels he is able to commit.

He's quizzing his own soul to check his dedication levels - something many athletes do at 37.

If it were about loyalty, he's already be back in Leafs land. At least he would have given Fletcher some indication before he tore the team down.

If it were all about money, he'd have jumped at the Canucks offer before it vanishes.

Sundin is soul searching.

The fact that you colour him a loser already is what is preventing you from seeing what I feel is quite obvious.

I've always found Mats to be a class act. I see this long delay as simply making sure the choice he makes is right for himself and all concerned.

The Leafs are out of the picture big time. He's had not one off season engagement there, as he usually does every summer.

I've not read anything that leads me to thinking just because more time has elapsed that the Habs are out of the picture.

Not a single thing has changed between now and last July 1 between the team's offer and Sundin, except everyone else is spending their money!

DD's picture

....and Raymond Bourque's was with Boston, but that didn't stop him from wanting to go out a winner and winning a Cup the Av's.

The same goes for the Big M.

RetroMikey's picture

Raymond Bourque wanted to win a Stanley Cup to end his career.
Does winning a Stanley Cup important for Mats to end his career as a winner?
I know what my answer is but you'll have to ask that question to Mats.
"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Robert L's picture

Why would you think it isn't important to Sundin to win?

Please don't answer that it is because you think he's a loser!

RetroMikey's picture

I'll answer Robert you and I won't repeat it again.
No, Sundin is not a loser.
He is quite content winning a gold medal for Sweden at the IIHF Worlds than winning a Stanley Cup.
He has 2 options.
Option1: Retire as a Leaf, an not betray his loyal Leaf fans.
Option 2: Sign with Toronot for one last season and make his loyal Leaf fans happy.
Frankly, he can do whatever he wants but he will never play in Montreal.

"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Robert L's picture

No one will ever accuse you of having an open mind!

RetroMikey's picture

Robert, I would sign you to be on our roster than Mats...you as well as others have the fire, passion and heart wanting to play for Les Canadiens.
I, unfortunately cannot say that for Mats. I'll see it when I believe it when he signs on the dotted line.
My Vegas odds are saying he won't sign for us.
Not trying to make enemies on this site.
BTW, keep up the great work on your blog Robert!
Great reading material, never close shop on your blog!

Sorry bro but that title is reserved to for the real big guy not this swede.

DD's picture

Frank Mahovolich started his career in loserville and that IS who I'm referring to.

I started out as a kid being a laff fan (my grandfather) and of course big Frank was my first hockey hero (I am that old).He won 4 Stanley's with the losers. When he was traded , I was so pissed that I dropped the laffs but as a good Canadian boy couldn't support the Red Wings so became a Hab supporter.Good thing because we soon moved to Montreal,a few years later the Big guy joined us and the rest is history. Not sure if it is my curse or Frank's that haunts the laffs. But they have a big fat zero since.
