If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?
Not even a minor league salary!
Hey Mike, I would have loved a little live blog of the opening ceremony in Beijing!
I wanna hear some witty comments about all those fireworks and funny costumes...
Hey Grrrreg:
Maybe they think the hockey jacket with your name on the sleeve is a funny costume.
I'm tryin', Brian.
Dealing with the basic imperfectability of man here.
And I'm still reeling from the revelation that you're a Republican.
Man, we are through.
I want my ring back.
Mike: Thanks, but it isn't me, at least the written part that is. It's some poster who is enamored of my good looks. Personally, I think it's freakin' hilarious, just as long as he/she doesn't stalk me in the hope of exchanging long meaningful glances over a bottle of Chimay Grande Reserve.
I have never heard of a Democrat ecomonist...do they exist ?
Actually, there have been lots of really good ones. My all time favorite would be Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volker.
Yes: tax rebates for the rich.
Given that the rich pay (defined as the top 50% of income earners) pay 97% of taxes, it's only right they should get tax rebates. Those who don't pay have no business getting a rebate.
I am not an economist or even a dabbler in that field but I am keen enough to know that defining the top 50% earners as rich is a crock of hooey. Considering that the income threshold for the top 30% of family incomes in Canada is only around $80,000, and I get that from those notorious pinkos at the Fraser Institute, I don't think anyone is thinking of those at the 50% thereshold as rich. When most people belly ache about the rich not paying their share, they are talking about the top 5% or so of family income earners and I am pretty sure the numbers for that bracket would be less convincing in your argument. That is of course if anyone could get a hold of such numbers. Strange how there doesn't seem to be a lot of publicly accessible analysis of these levels of earnings...hmmmmmmm. The only thing your numbers show is that we have one hell of a lot of people not earning very much money in Canada and that the middle class pay the tax bill, which is a surprise to no one at this point.
Well, actually, your response shows that No, you are not that very keen (and you don't read very well). The last time I looked, REPUBLICAN was an American political party, not Canadian.
Secondly, your response indicates that you're either not very good with internet research, or you're a typical liberal, too lazy to do the work yourself. Two minutes of search pulls up the following link:
http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB117668220910270761-lMyQjAxMDE3NzE2...
The WSJ is hardly secret, or not "publicly accessible". I'll let you do the rest of the research, which will only prove my earlier comment, that the top 50% of income tax payers pay 96% of taxes.
Looking for something else I noticed your reply. You know what? I should never have responded as I did earlier because this is a hockey site and this is not the type of discussion people come here for. However, since you replied to me I will address a few of the things you say.
Firstly, you are right that I assumed you were talking about Canada in your original post, had I looked at your profile and seen you lived in the States, I might have thought otherwise. I know even less about the U.S. tax situation than I do about the Canadian one and I would have refrained from commenting.
Secondly, the link you provided is to an opinion piece by a well known Republican political insider. Not even an economist but a former press secretary or professional spin doctor if you prefer. Hardly the type of thing I would base research on. When I referred to numbers I was talking about analysis and numbers directly from government sources. Anything I found in my 10 minutes of 'research', and I was looking for Canadian numbers, the percentile breakdowns never isolated the top 5-10% income earners. Usually grouping the top 30% earners together. That was the basis of my comments about not having easily accessible raw numbers on this.
Lastly, despite your accusations of my lack of keenness, my illiteracy, my poor research skill and/or lack of work ethic and my erroneous statements, I will stick by the main point that I was making. Perhaps you should consider reading more carefully yourself because my main point was; when people make negative comments about the rich not paying their fair share they are not talking about the top 50% of earners. Based on what I pointed out they are not even talking about the top 30% income earners, who in Canada are families making $80,000 a year and more. Most people don't think this is where the line is drawn between the middle class and the wealthy. Most people would be talking about families making several times more than that when they refer to the rich. I never disputed your claim that the top 50% pay 96% of taxes, even if you were talking about the U.S. I merely took issue with you defining the rich as the top 50%.
In the end, I am sorry I made any comments to begin with. I should have known better and refrained. In this case, I feel compelled to respond to your reply because you found it necessary to denigrate me instead of simply disagreeing.
Let's focus on the Habs as this is the interest we share in common. Dryden is one of my favourite players too. GO Habs GO!
Believe it or not, the "rich" didn't receive any rebate checks this spring. They all went to lower middle to lower filers.
Soaking the rich through the tax code was never useful in helping the poor. You want to help poor kids give directly to inner-city educational institutions that get the job done. They get the money; you get the tax deduction. Education was, is and will always be the great leveler in society. If you want some suggestions on schools that fit the bill, just let me know. As far as tax shelters, unless you are seriously going to consider a flat tax rate across all types of income, there is no way to get rid of them. If any are left standing, the wealthy with their means will always find lawyers and accountants to exploit them. Having said all that, I think you might want to tread a bit more lightly on the wealthy for one really good reason: They generally give a shitload of dough to very worthy causes.
P.S. If ghettos full of homeless kids in Pittsburgh are eating flies on 42nd Street, you might want to stop bitching, get off your ass, head down there and roll up your sleaves. Quite a lot of us in other major cities do!
P.P.S. Using my picture was funny yesterday, it isn't today. Take the hint!
Now that sounds more level-headed and honest.
No. He's in Beijing and busier than (choose one):
• a one-armed bookie with two telephones; or
• a one-armed paperhanger with crabs.
Doug Gilmore always played the game the way it is supposed to be played. But it took him a long time to understand that he was playing at the wrong end of the 401.

Gilmour's offensive abilities were long past when he joined but hebrought some grit to the Habs. Wasn't he the one who punched the glass in penalty box in the playoffs against the Canes?
He still had some offensive jam. His line with Oleg Petrov and Richard Zednik was spectacular in the playoffs until Kyle McLaren took Z out.
He did bust the penalty box door glass when he slammed it in that particular game.
I've adorded Gilmour's game since he was a Cornwall Royal and had a 55 game point scoring streak.
In 2002, in Koivu's absence, without Dougie, there is no way we make the playoffs.
In his first game as a Habs, Gilmour was ejected for jumping Vaclav Varada of the Sabres, after a late hit on Theodore.
They don't make 'em like Doug anymore.
I always felt kind of sorry for him ever since the Hockey Gods blew out his knee with his first (and last) shift back with the laffs.

That's John Gallagher (a Hab fan) asking the question, no doubt poking fun at a less than sucessful laff homestand. :)

Nasty....
I know. I thought long and hard before posting it. But I just get a little fed up with all this J.C. Superstar stuff with Gilmour. Time to let go and move on.
