Let the Games begin ...

The opening ceremonies in HD:

Wow!

Not even Ron McLean can ruin this show.

Most inane comment so far (it's still early): Confucius  was the "number-one celebrity of all time."

Who's second? Madonna?

•  •  •

How come this tai-chi chick looks so much better than the goofballs in the park near my house?

•  •  •

I've done a quick count: The number of performers in this ceremony exceeds the  residents of Nashville who've ever seen a hockey game.

•  •  •

The finale: a huge globe, rising out of the floor of the stadium.

Maybe as the music reaches a crescendo, Mats Sundin will come floating out of it.

And now Sarah Brightman will attempt to shatter every pane of glass in Beijing ... Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, Céline Dio sticks pins in a Sarah Brightman doll.

Could the guy singer with the hockey haircut have maybe work a proper shirt?

•  •  •

Shoot me now: McLean is  explaining Taoism (which he learned from  Don Cherry).

SUMMIT NEWS FLASH

Vicky, also known as HABSCHICK, by e-mail, is sending out an invoice to everyone for a 68 dollars ticket or 136 dollars for two tickets.Go to www.paypal.ca and open an account, it is easy and safe. Then when you get your invoice on your e-mail, just follow the Pay Pal instructions and you will receive a receipt immediately upon payment. I just paid mine and it worked well.

Once we secure these tickets and pay for them, we will ask for singles around
the building for people that want more than 2 tickets, if we can get them.

Single tickets will be reg. price. Make sure you pay for your tickets before noon on the 13th of AUG. or they will be sold to someone else.
We will invoice you again if and when we get your other single tickets after the 17th.

Also make sure just because you have paid for your tickets to us, don't be making hotel or plane reservations until we confirm that we got all the tickets first. They have not guaranteed them to us yet.

Handing the Olympics to an oppressive totalitarian regime has been done before- Moscow 1980, wasn't it? This is the 1st time the West hasn't boycotted for some reason or other. Could it be the West has become too dependent upon shoddy goods?
I won't waste my time watching any of it. I am not impressed that the Olympic movement is nothing but one looong television commercial that glorifies cheaters.

Who has not wondered what the papers would say the morning after Mats signs.

I am now officially bored. Call me Habs fan Lite.

Numminen received 1.1 mil for 2008-09. I certainly could have lived with that if we didn't sign Sundin.

The Original 24 Cups

Steve - I just read that and couldn't believe it and they say he may play 20 mins./game , so much for his age worries and his health. Maybe the trade deadline.

Moey's picture

Just to inject something different tonight, some of us agree on the fact that China wouldn't be our number one destination, in other words, it's not on the "bucket list".

What places would you really like to visit before you kick the bucket?

Moey's picture

Hey Mr. Boone, I want to hear from you too.

The summit of K2. I'm just a little too lazy to climb Everest.

Angelina Jolie!

But horses shouldn't be talking about injections during Olympic week!

Moey's picture

You're right, but in the dog days of summer, crap, it would be nice to get off the hockey topic for a couple of hours.

Chuck's picture

I'm to remind you that the Chinese government has removed the word "dog" from the vocabulary for the duration of the Olympics.

Wonderful... the cyclists just passed Tianamen Square, and the CBC commentator merely called it an "historic site". Way to sanitize it! I wonder if he read that off the cue cards.

So if the Olympics were to be held in Germany in the future should the commentators make references to the holocaust?

Official web site of Beijing olympics..."One world one dream."
What dream is that? Communism?
Zip it.

Chuck's picture

When you hear the word "opressive" used in conjunction with the Olympics, it's usually when talking about the summertime heat.

My interest in the Olympics is absolutely nil. Politics have ruined the spirit of the game's for me long ago. I won't be a pooper for those who still fing enjoyment for it.

My one interest regarding what happens in Bejing is the safe return home of Dave Stubbs.

Chuck's picture

I have no problem the spirit of the competition, what the Games ideally represent, nor with the athletes themselves; I wish them the best of luck and hope that they bring home every medal that they can get their hands on. Most importantly, I hope that they have fun, and come away from the experience with wonderful memories that will last them a lifetime.

However, knowing the politics behind these Olympics and that they were built on the back of what is essentially slave labour and strong-arm tactics (everything that the Games should NOT represent) will make it difficult for me to watch Bejing with a clear concience.

I'm with you Chuck, I have no interest in watching it. China isn't civilized, not to our standards. But, they were kind enough to take "DOG" off the menu in deference to the Westerners, God love them.

Chuck's picture

It was also nice of them to displace 1,000,000 people from their homes so that they wouldn't "get in the way" of a nice, shiny Olympics.

I'm kind of in a bind, in that my job requires that I at least watch a bit of it to keep abreast of things. But every time one of the announcers marvels about the futuristic architecture, I'll remember that the labourers, who were essentially forced to work at gunpoint, were paid the equivalent of 8 cents/hour... and throw up in my mouth a little.

I'm sure a lot of the Habs paraphernalia (and countless amount of low cost products, clothing and shoes) that we buy is also made in China with the workers that make them earning similarly low wages. North American corporations aren't exactly innocent when it comes to poor worker conditions and wages.

The manners of the Chinese people are not as civilized as North America but it is a product of having such a huge population. If you want something you have to fight for it. You have to realize China despite its rapid economic growth is still a developing country. Certainly you can't blame all the citizens of China for some of the questionable decisions of the government concerning human rights and media censorship.

Really what's the difference between eating dog meat or chicken, cows and pigs? They are all animals. Although I would never eat dog myself having had them as pets.
