Who will it be?

posted by Mike Boone at 9h22 EST on Aug 12

The Canadiens' 2007-'08 pocket schedule featured three players: Christopher Higgins, most prominently, as well as Cristobal Huet and Michael Ryder.

Huet and Ryder are gone.

Higgins is still a Hab, but don't bet the ranch he'll be the cover boy on the 2008-'09 sked.

A centennial theme is more likely.

The Canadiens would be hard-pressed to fit 100 years of great players onto a schedule that fits in your wallet, but maybe they'll go with a select few immortals.

Nominations?

How about Maurice Richard, Jean Béliveau, Guy Lafleur, Doug Harvey, Larry Robinson,  Jacques Plante, Toe Blake and a photo of the Cup?

Or is that too busy?

Good morning boys and girls, this is just a test post as I was posting spam, they said. OK, looks like we are good to go again.

Dedication : ............ Drew Doughty ........ "I began two-a-day workouts to prepare for the combine the day after my season was over in Guelph," Doughty said. "I do weights in the morning with my personal trainer, followed by a cardio session, then another cardio session after dinner. I heard the whispers from scouts who thought my body-type was a little chunky, so I decided to lose some weight and improve on my body fat to show myself and the NHL teams how committed I am to be playing at the next level next season." ........... Rod Brine'Amour ...... http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/hurricanes/story/1169128.html ....... Let's hope that Lats shows the same dedication.

Chris's picture
Well, to be fair, Doughty didn't have much choice. He WAS a bit overweight to make the NHL. I remember watching one of Guelph's first home games last year with a couple of friends and we were all blown away with how much weight Doughty had put on. It probably helped him a bit in the physical department, but he was noticeably slower and tired quicker last season as compared to the year before. He certainly looks like he realized that he needs to get that speed back to make it in the NHL. I agree with you regarding Latendresse...all indications are that he's been working on his skating all summer, so I'm hoping that it pays dividends for him this season. I actually think he has his head screwed on properly, so I just hope that he's got the skill-set to really make it as an NHL power forward. I'm not expecting him to turn into Cam Neely or John Leclair, but I wouldn't mind seeing him become a Tomas Holmstrom or Mike Knuble type player.

hey guys this is my first time on this site and i found an interesting article about the habs prospects i found on nhl.com that i think is worth posting. http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=379394

and dont forget we also have yemelin in russia

hab91 - Good article on our prospects and they missed Ryan White as well as Valentenko and great 1st post.

sidhu's picture
Fantastic link, thanks for posting it. I wouldn't be surprised if Boone devotes an entire thread to it tomorrow. I put a lot of stock into what Timmins says and it's great to see him excited about so many of our prospects. It's clear we are stacked at D - the article didn't even mention Valentenko, who may have a shot to crack the lineup this year. It's also evident that we could use more prospects down the middle. Pleks can score, but Koivu may be a 2nd liner at best and 3rd liner at worst; Chipchura and Lapierre are checking centers with limited offensive upside. Our youth on the right side doesn't look too hot either, but Max Power on the left seems like the real deal. Go Habs Go!

Meanwhile, here in the States, Comedy Central is showing the South Park episode in which Cartman turns out to have been fathered by the 1989 Denver Broncos or some such thing. NBC packaged reruns of the Olympics or Comedy Central reruns of South Park? Choices, choices... Damn, I hate the off-season.

olympic update..........canada 0 medals.

Bugs's picture
Azerbaidjan(or whatever) = 1 medal. 3 what? 4 athletes? Togo(easier to spell = 1 medal. 1 athlete. A Frenchman who didn't make the France team, goes to Togo. Togo then has ONE Olympic athlete. The flagbearer. Gets a medal. Canada = 0 medals. 300 athletes. We have the infrastructure. Now let's get some COACHES. Olympic Champion ultra-professional, ultra-devoted coaches. Said the same about John Limniatis. I love Limniatis. Think he's an EXCELLENT coach. But let's get Jose Luis Murinho in here. Let's get Scolari, Lippi, a REAL friggin' coach who can whip even the slightest worm into a killing machine. Then we'll see what's what. Lookit team Korea in woman's diving (I'm sure there are plenty of other examples). They hire a Chinese coach. Boom, silver. Hey, lookit Trestman. Can we all agree that the team looks decidedly better? Let's get some SUPERIOR, more WORLDLY knowledgeble coaching talent and the results will follow. The Euros got the idea; they've been hiring Canadians to manage their hockey teams for years now. Which is why they're catching up. Peace Out

I didn't realize that the great Tikhinov was Canadian. Thanks for the insight, where was he from? Rimouski? St. John's? The summer olympics to Canada is what minor soccer is to hockey dads, something to sort of keep your interest inbetween hockey seasons. Call me in 18 months when the real Olympics start.

TommyB's picture
Is there a point to your olympic updates? Is there a statement you would like to make regarding Canada's amateur athletes? Are you ashamed to be Canadian? Are you somewhat jealous of other countries? Do you wish you could live somewhere else? Now, obviously I have gone overboard here....but what exactly is it you want to say? This is not your first post of this "scorecard on Canada". What's up?

mrhabby's picture
sometimes its good to talk about other things. its a slow time in hockey world hence the updates. as far as what canada is doing in the summer games which is 0..the real games of course start in april.

If the Hurricanes had any marketing savvy, they'd market those Montreal games in Quebec with a travel package for a pre Christmas vacation. They'd be better off getting Habs fans in the rink paying full price than giving away tickets in the local market for free.

That scorecard is amazing. Who would have thought that in 1915 you would have "It is strictly forbidden to smoke" and "Help players by not smoking" printed on it. I thought Yashin was bad at holding out for more money.

Robert L's picture
That was the first thing that caught my eye as well! The thought I had was...of all places...the smoking capital of the world, Quebec City! The is actually a story that attaches to such an idea. The rare Honus Wagner baseball card that Gretzky and Bruce McNall bought in 1991, was pulled from a set published by a cigarette company. Wagner felt that it was innapropriate for an athlete to be endorsing a product that was unhealthy. I've read that only ten ever made it to the public's hands.

Robert I love the webpage..keep up the good work IN my HO I'd love to see a collage..4x players from each 25 year period, that played their position.. IE..4x left wingers over that 100 years...let us remember those that built the team, passed the torch...I'd suspect that we could include coaches.owners and builders from those eras as well

Robert, your webpage deserves to be in the top 50 on the Happy New Year picture alone.

Robert L's picture
Awesome idea, I second that!

Off topic: I was watching the Olympic Games, and on the medal count I see that China has the most medals so far, even surpassing the heavily favored USA. How many medals do the countries Canada and Quebec have? They didn't go down that far in the listing.

Canada's strength lies in the winter games =) Always so-so at summer =(

The Cat's picture
With all the immigrants from warm countries that we have, this shouldnt be an issue anymore, plus we should be good at soccer too. But were not...

DD's picture
.......because everybody knows that if you're from a warm climate you should be able to run the 100 m sprint in under 10 seconds or play soccer like Pele? These "immigrants", come to Canada to make a better life for themselves and their families, just like your ancestors and mine, not to rack up medals for your amusement. Between you and me, Cat, I think your comment is borderline bigotry.

The Cat's picture
Borderline bigotry? Now thats stretching it. But if you must know, I hate everybody equally.

DD's picture
Including yourself?

The Cat's picture
Dont be silly, Im special! As if you didnt know...

DD's picture
Yeah, you're special all right. You're one of a kind. A person that admits he likes Barry Maniblow and pretends to be a Habs fan while he's really a frustrated and 'still in the closet' Quebec Nordiques fan. Jim asked you a question earlier, which, so far, you have chosen to ignore. Let me ask you one; Do your repetitive and unsubstantiated negative posts towards Bob Gainey and his reign as GM have anything to do with your pent up frustration over Colorado winning the Cup after your Nodicks folded like a cheap suit?

The Cat's picture
Ah DD if you only used your ability for verbal diarrhea for good instead of evil...Firstly, Im not that negative when it comes to Gainey. Ive mentioned some of the good things hes done. I call em as I see em, the same way Ive said Washington is stupid to have signed Theodore. If you want to behave the same way a teenage girl stares at a Johnny Depp poster on her wall with regards to Gainey, then you go ahead, but please stop trying to force me to waive my self respect for the sake of the team. Secondly, you're right, I chose to ignore to pursue the discussion on politics as I feel its not too polite to get into political debates. Im sorry Jim for not replying. Its nothing against you, Im sorry for making the comment but I didn't know how to delete it.

DD's picture
Or you at a Barry Manilow poster.

Just imagine what a powerhouse Brazil could be in hockey in 20 years if a bunch of Canadian guys decided to settle there and go forth and multiply. Given what I have seen on the beaches of that country, I have just one question: What the hell are you all waiting for!

RGM's picture
That is an incredibly off-side comment. Quebec is not a country, it is an integral part of a united Canada. Nobody would refer to Florida as a country, don't do the same for one of my country's provinces. ----- Go Habs Go!

The Cat's picture
Its true Quebec isnt a country, but Canada isnt a real country either.

Cat How so?

DD's picture
Yes, please indulge me too.

RetroMikey's picture
Don't be so negative RGM, or should I say, so serious. Actually I found it to be funny. Laughter is the best medicine kid. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Relax brother, it was all tongue-in-cheek. I was trying to get a relative riled up. Read below and you'll see what I mean. And furthermore, "your" country is actually "our" country. Again, read some entries below to get a clear picture.

We have a whopping 0 medals but there are some coming probably around 10 or so. I am assuming by your name that you are American. I am curious to see how our Canadians match up in the medal count against the United States.....of course I factor demographics into the equation and since the population of the United States is approx. 303 million and Canadfa has about 33 million people then I figure a 9.18 factor is fair (and I am not even considering the fact that almost our entire country suffers through untrainable winters (for summer sports)). I figure if we land 10 medals and the US doesn't win 92 medals then we win. We beat them in 2004 as we won 12 medals and the US won 110 medals .......our 12 medals translates to about 110 medals after the 9.18 factor is applied. It is normally a very close race but the US has that Phelps guy so they have a shot at beating us this year.....oh well should be interesting to see if we can defend our title. Those Belarussians are the real athletes....15 medals in 2004 with a population around 10 million......WOW!! No wonder those Kostitsyn's can fly. Greece, Netherlands, Cuba and Hungary deserve mention as well.

Moey's picture
Krob, The population corrolation has some merit, but on the other side of the coin, where have all best hockey players come from to date? I'm exluding Ovechkin of course. It's really a matter of what sports a country focuses on most and where most of the funding goes. For us, obviously it's hockey and winter sports.

absolutely ...between climate and funding which is a totally different story (ie. football is not an Olympic sport and how many top notch American athletes play football, etc). I am just saying population in combination with climate is the biggest advantage a nation can have....population being the biggest IMO. Ignoring all of the little details that are in fact big details it also must be noted that there were 929 medals awarded in the 2004 games and only 251 medal awarded int he 2006 winter games. By assuming the same number of available medals (multiplying winter totals by 3.7) and combining the medal from 2004 and 2006 the standings are actually as follows. winter wint(x3.7) summer total pop in million US 25 92 103 220 303 Russia 22 81 92 195 141 Ger 29 107 48 184 82 Cana 24 89 12 125 33 Austria 23 85 7 115 8 * China 11 41 63 115 1321 Norway 19 70 6 95 4.6 * So Korea 11 41 30 85 49 France 9 33 42 84 60 * Italy 11 41 32 84 58 Sweden 14 52 7 73 9 * Switz 14 52 5 71 7 * Nether 9 33 22 64 16 * Austral 2 7 49 58 20 * I realize this fatally flawed and misweighted but just for fun but if we try by taking the countries to have won double digit medals in both climates that helps to reduce the impact of the weighted system (and makes our numbers better lol). By doing this Austria, Norway, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands and australia are eliminated. Now look at our medal count relative to the populations and tell me who the best athletes in the world are ..................O CANADA OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND....... Now I will not accept any logical rebuttals or contradictions to this data as I am too proud to care.....so when you think we are sucking at these games just remember this......and that October is right around the corner.

not sure what happened to the data getting all squished like that...it looked bettter on my original post

If Canada wins 10 medals and USA wins 92 medals. Canada still wins the medal count, in your opinion?!?!?

That's like saying, if I make $100K a year and you make $50K a year. If we walk into a Depanneur and you have $5 in your pocket and I have $8 dollars in my pocket. YOU, technically have more purchasing power.

It's really quite simple ....who wins a hockey game the best 15 players in the Greater Toronto area or a team from Nanaimo , BC. I'll elaborate more in a bit but I need to first admit there are several factors but clearly the number one indicator is population size in combination with climate.

chelios_24's picture
Canada always sucked in the summer games. Anyways...I really can`t take the summer any more. I want Ocotober here..I want hockey and can`t wait to watch Kovy do his magic.

MikeL's picture
lol, that's a foolish argument. I think we should just accept that we suck at the Summer games, and just wait for 2010.

Actually I was born in Montreal at St. Mary's in Cote-Des-Neiges. I became an American citizen in 1996 after moving here in 1987.

lol darn it... and I was looking for a good argument ...it's been a while with the summer and you fooled me with the Quebec thing.

krob - So you admit you go out of your way and look for arguments and it pisses me off i got sucked in , dammit.

I'm working on something right now ....but I can only use it if it supports my side lol....we'll see.

I was hoping my Brother-in-law would "bite" on the Quebec thing too, but he hasn't.

Naila Jinnah's picture
Uhm, that's because we have none. Also, Quebec isn't a country.

I know Quebec isn't a country, I was "razzing" my separatiste brother-in-law who mentioned something about Quebec having a "sovereign-state" status or something like that. I'm sorry, I couldn't understand his "Joual".
