What photo best encapsulates hockey?

Rory Boylen of The Hockey News has a few suggestions.

Bobby Orr taking flight would be the consensus choice, but Canadiens fans may be partial to anything featuring Maurice Richard.

Other "news" on a quiet Saturday in Montreal:

• The Ottawa Citizen reports Jason Spezza has bought a $6 million house. Check it out here and here

• Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated looks at free agents likely to disappoint their news teams. Mark Streit is on the list: " ... did the success of the top-rated Montreal power play revolve around the 31-year-old, or was he the beneficiary of an established system that had led the league without much help from him the previous year? " Muir also thinks Ron Hainsey will flop.

• Chris Chelios toured Chicago with the Stanely Cup on Friday.

• The Devils have waived Vitali Vishnevski, whom they signed to a $5.4 million, three-year contract a year ago.

• The Predators have given Alexander Radulov a Sept. 1 deadline.

• At Hockeybuzz, Eric Engels looks at elevated expectations for the Canadiens this season.

Great news on the Habs Fans Summit front - our block of 56 tickets has been confirmed!

We got 'em folks - woohoo!

Even better - Ian has managed to get his mits on additional tickets, in a section directly above the block of 56. We cannot confirm how many at this point, but were in good, let's just say.

So now, for all of you who wished for extra tickets, here is what you need to do in the next 40 or so hours.

I will need all your info, full name, site name, phone, address, e-mail, and how many tickets you desire. I will be forwarding a list with this info to Ian by midnight tomorrow and the tickets will be ordered when the offices open on Wednesday.

This is all the open window we have for this. For those who have already spoken up about extra tickets, we have your information, but we will still need your additional confirmation if you have not already been contacted by Ian by phone.

There is no two per person ticket limit this time, and this offer is first come first serve.

If you have already been confirmed for a pair of seats, and want two more, we will make certain that your 4 seats are all together.

Ticket prices are $68.00.

Contact me, Robert L, by clicking on the contact tab in my profile. Send an e-mail with the requested into asked for above. I will be putting a list together as requests come in.

That is all for now. There will be a posting under the Summit tab shortly.

I can see that summer hockey boredom has hit new highs... I did mention this on another thread but here I write it again... Would anyone be interested in a hockey pool through the habs inside out? It can be as simple as the playoff one, with a limit of players... Nothing too fancy... One person could give us a report nce a month or something... Just very very simple.. So who would be in??

Players win games, teams win championships.

I would really love to retire St-Patricks jersey, but has he merited it? Has he done as much as a Canadien as Gainey, Robinson & Co. ?

Retire Carbo's jersey before Koivu or Roy's.

J.T.'s picture

I say Roy merits it for the sole reason that if he hadn't done what he did as a Hab, we'd now be looking at the one hundredth birthday of the team and the thirtieth anniversary of the last time it won a Cup.

ButJohnnyLovesHockey's picture

Don't you think that if we hadn't one in 86, the GM's would do something to get a cup? They wouldn't drift aimlessly like they did in the 90's.

Though I don't post much, I'm here multiple times a day and am looking forward to the Habs Fan Summit! 2 tickets!

J.T.'s picture

Well, on the flip side of that argument, do you really think management was saying "Hey, we won a Cup in '86, so we're free to drift aimlessly now?" Of course not. If there was a way they might not have sucked in the '90s, they wouldn't have. No, Roy did great things for the Canadiens and really, as far as I'm concerned, played a major role in keeping a little of the team's mystique alive through what were otherwise some pretty stark decades for hockey in Montreal.

longtimehabsfan's picture

The way he exited Montreal is unlike any other habs player's exit that had his number retired. To top it off, he demanded to go to a team a year removed from Quebec, the Habs' arch rival. My vote is no. He does not merit it. He should have sucked it up and stayed with the Habs.

J.T.'s picture

I would have loved for him to stay with the Habs, but as we've discussed on here in the past, few of the Habs' number retirees were saints for various reasons. I mean, Lafleur played for the Nords while they were actually still in Quebec and no one's screaming to take his number down. But if you look at the big picture, which is the player's contribution to the good of the organization...Roy merits it.

Thank goodness and good -bye to the Olympics in Beijing ,time to get some sleep back ,lol.Between the pro China judging and the eratic t.v. coverage"missed the shotput, high jump, discus etc.so we could see speed walking...jeezez,lol"I'm glad it's a done deal!

The closing ceremonies were cool.

That guitarist was pretty good!

Anybody catch his name? ;)

yathehabsrule's picture

You mean that grey haired sweaty guy that has his lower lip sticking out when he plays?

I think his name is Jimmy Page...He was in the Yardbirds post Clapton and Beck...From what I know he tried to carry the band with some new members as the New Yardbirds but it didn't fly...I think they changed their name but I don't know if they were successful or not.. ;)

ZepFan2's picture

Oh that's WHO he is! I thought it was this guy...http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=pfiyEsMOSu0

Connecticut Man1's picture

Didn't that Page guy also get his start doing studio musician stuff for Brit bands like the Kinks? His band own band went over like a lead balloon... Or so I have heard.

Robert L's picture

Jimmy Page - he was in the firm with that dude that sings with Queen now, right?

the speed walking looks like they are all in a hurry to get to the washroom.

A story on BGL...

"Daryl Katz so wanted Georges Laraque here as the Edmonton Oilers' nightly beat cop, the new owner offered the big guy a four-year contract -- one more year than the Montreal Canadiens were pitching the right winger.

"Laraque still took the Habs' $4.5-million offer -- mainly because his mother in Montreal wanted to see him play games in the flesh, not on TV."

I sure hope BGL doesn't feel the need to "behave" in front of his mother.

If you mean the goalie in the photo with the Rocket, no, that's not Brimsek, whose career already had ended by then. It's Sugar Jim Henry.
