Gainey not very optimistic about Sundin

posted by Kevin Mio at 21h42 EST on Aug 26

According to RDS, Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey is already working on a Plan B should Mats Sundin decide not to join the Canadiens.

According to Gainey: "It's hard to be very optimistic because we haven't had much contact with him. We haven't gotten the message that he is very interested by the Canadiens. We have a place for him, and on paper we offer him a nice option."

Gainey hasn't closed the doors on Sundin, but is concerned about his physical fitness since he has not trained during the offseason.

The Canadiens could be looking at trades with the Flyers and Blackhawks as an option should Sundin sign elsewhere. Both teams are over the salary cap and need to shed some players and payroll before the start of the season.

Welcome to the world of today's NHL player. Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, it's only about "ME" and the money. Sure there might be the odd player who has a soft spot for tradition, and integrity. But on the whole, those days are long gone.

gaineys not a panic guy, i cant see him making a trade right before training camp.we picked up tanguay and bruiser george, roll the bones with what weve got and lets getter done!!

Gainey is just playing his poker face. I believe there is still a chance that Sundin is thinking of Montreal.

I think in this case a spade is a spade. Or something. I think that there has been no wrangling, no discussion, no movement, and I think Bob has only ever been honest with us. Contrary to what a lot of people say, Bob is pretty much a "cartes sur table" kind of guy. He wanted Briere? He said he was going for Briere. He wanted Sundin? He made a big splash of announcing it as the draft began. I think he has a poker face during trades and such, but when it comes to free agents, he's pretty straightforward.

SUMMIT NEWS WE JUST HAD ANOTHER FATAL ERROR ON OUR SUMMIT BLOG TODAY> So here is todays news, we have a total of 81 people coming to the Summit If you have not paid for your tickets on paypal yet, do so right away. We have 6 tickets that have not been paid for, so who ever wants them, get in touch with myself or Robert ASAP. Now that we know how many people are going this year, we will need to know who will need discounted hotel rooms, who will want to go on the Bell Center tour, who will be attending the pre game dinner (where we will auction off stuff, like a pair of season tickets, donated by Vicky, set of Gretsky hockey cards donated by Robert and much more that Chuck is getting from the Club) and who will be attending the after game get together. Each Summit officer for each event will need this info so as to reserve a spot for you at each event. Stay tuned IAN

Why the f**k are we waiting for Plan B now??? I kept telling eveyone that Putz Sundin was not coming ever even way back in March of last year! If we trade for a center than I assume it's for second line (Lang, Marleau, Nylander) duty pushing Koivu to the third line. The trade would most certainly be prospect based. What happened to the Lapierre as a winger experiment? (not that we need more wingers)

no offence but no one mention above is superior enough to bump koivu to third line center ( At least in my books) Sundin yes....

sidhu's picture
Perhaps we can pull off a relatively minor deal in trading for Michel Ouellet, who is on the block. Let's say Cube and a mid-pick for Ouellet, yielding: AK-Pleks-Kovy Tanguay-Koivu-Lats SK-Higgy-Ouellet Kosto-Lapierre-BGL Bench: Begin, Chipchura Markov-Komo Hammer-OB JG-Carle/Valentenko Breezer

24 Cups's picture
sidhu - that's a pretty weak defense that you have listed there. No chance of winning the Cup this year with those guys on the back end. The Original 24 Cups

Skotbot's picture
is it just me or did he only remove Cube, and add the two kids.. "sidhu - that's a pretty weak defense that you have listed there. No chance of winning the Cup this year with those guys on the back end." Does this mean that WITH Cube, u think we will win the cup, but without we wont? Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable? Or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

24 Cups's picture
Skotbot - No. What I've been saying for most of the summer is that we need another experienced defenseman to go along with the 6 guys we have on the present roster. Losing the Cube would therefore put us down two regular Dmen. We can't forget that our two goalies are just young guys who have never had a full year of playing in the NHL. The Original 24 Cups

Skotbot's picture
24 Now that u mention needing another, I understand your post better. However you now say losing the Cube, we would be down to 2 regular Dmen, I think Hammer, Komi, and Markov would be top 4 in many markets.. and with Gorge and Obyrne in the wings, we got 2 up and comers.. so yes a 6th would be profitable, however at what price? Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable? Or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Don't need another winger.

If we do make a move, I hope lang is not on the radar, im hoping, but very doubtful that we could pluck one of the good younger dmen from Chicago. If not, forget Carter, too expensive and neither team will trade any real valu since we play so often during the season, I think schneider would be the best fit, but would likely be a little expensive, and I doubt dandy would go the other way.

saskhab's picture
I think there are 5 other teams that probably are thinking similar thoughts about Mats right now. Just a feeling. But while I think the forward is something to always look at, Mathieu Schneider in Anaheim is available. A former Hab and teammate of the entire coaching staff (save Jarvis) as well as Gainey. He'd fit in nicely in the team's top 4, giving a good puckmoving presence and big minutes on the PP. His cap hit is $5.75m. Sure, Gainey has said he likes his D, but this would really stabilize the group IMO. I think puckmoving ability is a weak spot on the blueline. We'd move closer to the cap, but come the deadline, we should still have enough space to make a trade for a centre. I also don't think Schneider would cost a lot... Anaheim is desperate to move salary and not many people would be in the market for a 38 year old d-man with a $5.75m cap hit. We might even be able to get them to take on Dandenault, although they might want to keep the cap space to re-sign Selanne if he's up for another go. There was a push to sign Schneider two offseasons ago when he was a UFA, but he opted for the more competitive Anaheim and Gainey went after Hamrlik.

G-Man's picture
Too many young D-men who can break into the lineup for a too old and expensive Schneider. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

24 Cups's picture
G-Man - you just hit on the secondary Hab debate that seems to be going on this summer outside of the Sundin saga. Do we bring in a green rookie (who may not be ready, but will add to Gainey's building program) to be our 7th defenseman or do we land an experienced 2nd pairing Dman who will help give us a realistic shot at the Cup? My betting is that we will split the difference and go with Brisebois. If we don't sign Sundin, then I feel it would be a tragic mistake to re-sign Brisebois and let the cap money sit on the table. Sundin has the skills, but he obviously doesn't have the passion to be here. We are in good shape for next season without him. I like the team we have. On paper, I think we're stronger than last year, and the extra year of maturity for our guys can only help. Worst case scenario, there should be something available at the deadline. GO HABS! ~Goose~ October 30, how about a midwest "mini-summit" in St. Paul???

Teams that are above the cap and that may play with BG as a result: TEAM (how much over the cap, in millions), players signed PHI, -4.517, 22 CHI, -2.508, 20 WAS, -2.255, 24 CGY, -1.479, 24 ANA, -1.313, 21 SJS, -0.226, 21 Potential targets may include Carter, Knuble, Upshall, Lang, Nylander, Lombardi, etc.

only ones worth trying for is Selanne and Carter i believe ...

24 Cups's picture
Sidhu - Philly is not going to trade Carter, even though I would love to have him. It's just not going to happen. San Jose isn't in bad shape and can get by with a minor alteration or two. Philly is in a hole but the $4.5 mil may not be their real cap deficit come the beginning of the regular season. Khabibulin should be on that list for Chicago. Most teams will try and trade outside of their conference and LA and Atlanta may need to take on some players in order to hit the lower cap ceiling. Another consideration is how many players are signed for a team, as well as their cap hit. Right now LA has only 14 players under contract so in reality they are not as low as you would think. The teams that are in real trouble (Philly, Chicago, Washington) will be dealing from a position of weakness and will have to make some trades that are not for true worth in terms of market value. They won't be like the trades at the February deadline. The Original 24 Cups

24 - Atlanta is going to sign Zach Bogosian and a journeyman or two and their ceiling is met and as you know the other teams aren't as bad as it looks but what these teams are looking for is not only to get below the salary cap but some salary room for the future. Chicago will have 14 RFAs to sign next summer and the majority of them have NHL potential , very interesting , and Edmonton have 10 RFAs next July.

carter lang havlat marleau kozlov nylander Here are some of the more attractive players from teams that are currently over or near the cap: Jeff Carter (C Flyers) Robert Lang (C Blackhawks) Martin Havlat (LW Blackhawks) Patrick Marleau (C Sharks) Viktor Kozlov (C Capitals) Michael Nylander (C Capitals) The following is what is required, IMO, to acquire them.... Carter -> Higgins, defensive prospect (Weber, Carle, Emelin, etc) Lang -> Lapierre/Chipchura Havlat -> A. Kostitsyn, Gorges, 1st Marleau -> Higgins, Latendresse, defensive prospect (Valentenko, McDonaugh, etc) Kozlov -> Lapierre, 3rd Nylander -> Higgins, 2nd Of course everyone has a different opinion of a player's worth. To me, Higgins is a career 2nd liner (>65 points). For that reason he is tradeable, in my eyes. These are not necessarily trades that I would do, but rather what I think would be necessary to acquire cette players.

sponge bob's picture
who do you think we would have to give calgary to get daymond langkow?

We need centres not wingers so that eliminates Havlet. These teams are in a salary dumping mode so it would take draft picks and prospects not NHL salaries.Higgins gives more to the team then his second or even third line status and it would have to be a major deal to make it worth our while (notice that the first player mentioned by other teams seem to be Higgins).Under your logic,Bo and Carbo were career 3rd or 4th liners. I can't see Carter or Marleau being available and if they are the price would be high ,maybe even too high. That leaves us Lang or one of Kozlov/Nylander...none of these make my dream team.On the financial side, both Kozlov and Lang are UFA's next season while Nylander has 3 years left in his contract plus I believe some kind of no movement clause. As I feel none of these gentlemen are long term solutions ,am again going with Lang as our best bet (for prospects /draft picks) Our present 22 players plus Lang's $4 ml, leaves us $2,5 ml of which you need $1-2 ml a year for guys coming up from Hamilton.See nightmare ,I do agree with you with developing players and utilizing our financial resources, just don't like wasting them (Scottish and Welsh sides coming out)

HabFan - I'm Irish/Scottish so pray for me. We are one or possibly two assets away from dealing with big power on the trade market and an asset is a proven NHL player who can still play.

Irish/Scottish...uhhhh.Love to drink and ...have someone else pay the tab,heh laddie!

Neil's picture
I would give my left testicle before i gave up AK46, Gorges and a first round pick for Havlat. Hell even if we could keep the pick I still wouldn't do it. Don't get me wrong, Havlat is one of the best in the league when he plays. He's almost a point a game player but if he only averaged 36 games in the last 3 seasons, what's the point?? Andrei's going to come close to 36 goals this year.

likehoy's picture
after the carter trade...i tihnk the other 5 are too far fetched...

Mats' loss if he doesn't sign here. The top line will be AK46/Pleks/Kovy The real question is who gets the second line RW spot. If the rumours of Latendresse having worked his but off all summer, especially focussed on his skating are true, then he could well be the 2nd line RW, with Koivu and Tanguay, and if that happens, I think we are in good shape to that point. If not, Sergei K gets that spot, but as much as I like Sergei, my preference is big Gui with Tangs and the Captain. The Third line should be Higgins /Lapierre /S Kost. In my opinion that would be a really strong third line. Latendresse's +/- through the second half of last season was very impressive given that he didn't really have a line, and was constantly being juggled, and that on top of that, he really didn't get a ton of ice. That said, Sergei is much better as a shut down type, and combined with Higgins and Lapierre, could be part of one of the best third lines in the league next season. The fourth will be a bit of musical chairs, although I have to wonder how effective Steve Begin can be. He has given everything to this team, and I certainly respect that, but I am not sure if his body can stand up to another season. I also have to wonder where Chipchura stands in Gainey's plans. He really seemed to fall out of favour towards the end of last season - might he end up getting traded for someone who can win a faceoff? Alternatively, he could well end up taking the 3rd line center spot, if he is back out of the doghouse. Kostopoulos and the great Georges Laracque should see very regular 4th line ice time, I don't think there's much question with them. MaxPac probably won't see much of Montreal this season. Gregory Stewart will likely be given a shot at taking someone's 4th line ice time. If Begin, Chiphcura, or even Lapierre struggle at all, I can see Stewart getting a real chance to steal a spot with a bit of line juggling. We don't need Sundin. I can't deny I am still hopeful he signs with us, but if not, we can win without him.

Good post ,believe that Chipchura will be given the 3rd line spot to lose.He came into camp last year and stole Laps 4th line spot from him.Gainey had thought he needed another year in Hamilton so had Smolenski signed for one year.Laps went down to Hamilton and proved he didn't belong there so regained his spot.Chips slowed down and proved that he did need more time in the AHL.Understand that he played well there but is not a high scorer, just does a lot of little things right including leading.

HabFan - IMO Chips simply replaces Smolinski as center on the 4th line with Begin and TommyK. Once Smols figured out his role , poor communication again by the coach , he fitted in well on the energy line in the last third of the season. Chips is similar to Smols as he is a thinker on the ice but he has to play the man more often like Smols did at the end of the year to be effective with these line mates. He doesn't have to play the body like his wingers do all the time but use the body effectively like Smols did and take the man out and stop that poke checking bull ***. Chips also has a tendency to pursue the puck all the time whereas his role with those wingers would be the high man and positioning is vital. These little habits of his piss off the coach cuz he doesn't have the skating ability to cover up for himself. On paper Lapierre would be an ideal center for the energy line but in the long run his hustle would get him into trouble by missing assignments thru his aggressive play which he needs to play good but once in awhile he can play on that line to shake things up. BTW Georges Laraque is my 3rd line RW for the most part.

Who is your 3rd line centre then if we don't acquire one,and where does SK or Lats play if George takes 3rd line?By the way ,this scenario of mine only applies if we go status quo into the season otherwise...long term I see Chips being 4th line Centre with Laps going to a wing replacing TK and/or Begin.Did you see my earlier entry re alternate players?Personally think we as fans want to be coaches and GM's too much...believe strongly in leaving it to the pros.Guess I'm just too opinionated to keep my mouth shut or in this case fingers clinched.Have a good one.

HF - Status quo would have Lapierre between Higgy and Laraque on the third line and Sk74 on RW on the 2nd Line for the Habs and Lats on RW on the 2nd line in Hamilton , lol. Mark my words , Lats will come out like a bat of of hell during training camp against weaker competition but we all know about his inconsistancy when the season starts so he will have to wait his turn and earn a spot in the line up this year , nothing given and a reversed role , no more making the line up to fit Lats in but a line up to keep him in the stands , make him damn hungry. Our hot dog expert. I'd really like us to pick up another center with NHL experience that can back up Pleks and Saku in a pinch and be an asset just for this year.

G-Man's picture
Chipchura is one smart player. As a center, he may be too slow for the role. Now, if he worked on his skating all summer like Gui he may take the 4th line center spot. If we don't acquire a center, Lapierre may be moved up to #3. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

Not to put down Laps as I believe him to be as gifted offensively as chips but he is a "energy" player which is traditionally the 4th line, while Chips strength is overall postional play or checking ( traditionally the 3rd line ). Although it doesn't look like we will have a traditional checking line per say this season.

For what its worth, here are my line combos as posted a few days ago in the Sergei K interview thread. Personally, I think that barring any signings or significantly different than anticipated individual performances in the preseason (for better or for worse) I see the lines as follows; 1a- AK46 - TP14 - AK27 1b- AT?? - SK11 - GL84 3- SK74 - KC28 - CH21 4- SB22 - ML40 - GL??/TK6 GL84 could switch with SK74 and/or CH21 depending on performance, as could KC28 & ML40. The only reason I put KC28 on the 3rd rather than 4th line is that I think the 3rd one would be more of a checking line with offensive upside and the 4th an agitating/energy one. The only reason I put SB22 on the 4th with GL & TK alternating is because Begin is listed as a LW and both GL & TK6 are listed as RW. Given SB22's style of play he could be out quite a bit due to injuries and or bad penalties and I suspect GL?? - ML40 - TK6 would be the likely result. I agree with you that MaxPac probably won't see much of Montreal, but I think the only time we'll see Stewart is if there are injuries. The only way I see Tanguay with Kovalev, other than on the PP, is if the AK46 - TP14 - AK27 line loses the magic it had last year, and Carbo starts mixing and matching again. Rgds, LGB

That should pretty much put an end to this whole affair. It sure looks like Mats will never be confused with Johnny Damon. So it's onward and upward without him. You can bet that before the season is out Mr. Gainey will find another good use for 7 million. GO HABS.

G-Man's picture
Well, it's the Tuesday after the Olympics and still no sign of the Mysterious Swede. Habs would still be much better with him, but if he doesn't show any interest, let him retire with 555 goals and 766 assists and 0 Stanley Cups. Dang, on to plan B. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

It doesn't look to good about sundin coming. Whether he does or not i really like this move by Gainey. Basically Gainey is covering his *behind*. If Gainey kept quiet and Sundin did not come to mtl then gainey would be further criticized for not bringing in top-tier free agents. Anyways, what do you guys think the lines will be. I'm a litte confused because we have alot of left handed shooters and a lot of possibilities. Tanguay-Koivu-Sergei/Latendresse A Kost - Pleks - Kovalev Higgins-Lapierre- Latendresse/Sergei/ Begin-Chichura- Kostop/ Laraque Where does Pacioretty fit in? What line will start as number 1? Will Carbo keep the A kost/pleks/ kovalev line together? How will tanguay and koivu play together, they are both play makers, while koivu does finish they need a big body on that like and i dont think sergei is the man that is needed. If Latendresse (edit: I was one of latendresse's biggest criticizers this year.) improves his skating I really see him having a great year placed with Tanguay and koivu. He can truly grow into that powerforward he was meant to be. Screening the goalie and taping in rebounds as tanguay and koivu set up the perimeter. A line of higgins lapierre and Sergei is also intriguing. Although Lapierre will really need to push himself harder to keep up.

G-Man's picture
I think Tanguay will play with Kovalev. Hard to say if it'll be Koivu or Pleks at center. Last time I looked, Koivu was #2 on the center depth chart. Carbo's going to have a tough time ordering the lines this year, especially with Pacioretty in camp looking to step in. I have a feeling Begin's days are numbered, along with Dandy and already 32 year-old Bouillon. 100 seasons and a whole lotta change continues. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

F(orget, uck) Sundin. Gainey said: "I know that certain other teams are presently over the salary cap.... If Mats doesn't join us, maybe we'll discuss things with those teams." Time to move on and prepare a roster of players that has no qualms about being part of this great organization and its centennial season.
