Finally announcing that he's decided to pursure his career with the Valhalla Valkyrie, a well-over-his-playing-weight Mats Sundin waddles up to the mic and offers a final aria to his Montreal fans:

(with apologies to Don Henley)

Nobody on the road,
nobody on the beach.
I feel it in the air,
the summer's out of reach

Empty lake, empty streets,
the sun goes down alone.
I'm driving by Bob's house
though i know that he's not home ...

And i can see you
CH shining in the sun
you got your lines intact
centennial's on, baby

and i can tell you
my love for you was all a con
And now the puck teaser of summer is gone ...

"He's a Ranger or a Canadien. about 50/50. And Gomez will be moved." I just can't see the Rangers, who already have cap issues, moving Gomez to make room for Sundin, who'll likely make even more than Gomez does. Plus they'll have to pay whoever they get for Gomez, unless they're nutty enough to deal him for picks and prospects. And as for this: "Sources this morning have informed me that Schneider may be a Canadien as early as "this evening or tomorrow morning." There is much speculation surrounding this move as it may be a trigger move that comes from the Canadiens being officially "out of the Sundin Sweepstakes." I can't possibly believe that. Why would we deal for an ancient defenseman? I really don't think he's an upgrade over Bouillon or O'Byrne -- not anymore -- and he likely makes a lot more cash than they do... 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. The Rocket Richard Sport Illustrated Interview 1960 For those of you here who might have missed this when I posted it here over the last 48 hours.....a true must read! The piece, taken from The Rocket's final NHL season, literally, it blew me away! As I read through it a second time, the human being inside the legend began to emerge and layers were pealed away from what we all always recognized as Habs fans, in Richard, as being a larger than life figure. Revealing, isn't the word! The perception that comes out of this article, is of a mortal being, not unlike you and I, who is staring straight at a career crossroads. http://wwwrealitycheckeyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008/08/maurice-rocket... Somebody ought to send this to Sundin with a note saying, "Hey Mats, if this sounds anything like you - QUIT!"

Robert L., the story has been on the web for several years, and I'm a bit surprised you hadn't seen it before given your voracious consumption of all things Canadien. I vividly remember buying this issue of Sport Illustrated--even down to the drugstore where I got it--and I still have the cover. It was quite something; the portrait was striking, and it was very rare for Sports Illustrated to put any hockey player on its cover, much less one who played for the Canadiens. So on one level I was thrilled. But the fact that Maurice made the magazine cover at this particular time plainly indicated that Sports Illustrated was marking the end of his career, by then a prospect I had dreaded every summer for several years. We who loved Maurice knew he was fading, of course, that he was finding the game increasingly difficult, that the end was near, but this kind of confirmation was deeply distressing. And I was even more depressed after reading the story, not because it told of anything new, but because there in black and white, indeed, in Maurice's own words, was confirmation of what we knew to be true and feared but did not want to accept. A few months later, in September, 1960, the Rocket announced his retirement. It was one of the saddest days of my life; I was in despair and went into mourning of sorts. Maurice had scored four goals against Jacques Plante in a practice game that day, but he said in his retirement announcement that he had decided to leave the game because he wanted to make way for the younger players. That was the version that appeared in the media at the time, including the Hockey News, and, a year or so later, in Andy O'Brien's biography. I don't know when it first became publicly known, but I did not discover the truth until decades later when I read a Red Fisher piece on Maurice that was part of his series on the 10 greatest Canadiens he saw play. General Manager Frank Selke had called Maurice into his office, noted how many games he had missed through injury in recent seasons and "suggested" he retire. Maurice, ever the team player, went along, although he was furious and felt he still had a year or two left in him. Frank Selke, who in the Sports Illustrated article indicated that he would not oppose Maurice playing for another season if he so chose, was a great general manager, but I can't forgive him that singularly cruel ambush of a magnificent player who gave his all to the club for 18 seasons. After giving the club he loved everything he had for so long, Maurice deserved to leave the game on his own terms, or at the very least on terms discussed and mutually agreed upon in advance. Yet the player who symbolized dedication and loyalty to the club more than any other in its history was, at the end, discarded in as shabby an act of disloyalty as the game has seen. __________________ Edited to correct grammatical error in first sentence of third paragraph--deleted "editors" after "Sports Illustrated."

As always Robert ,very good. The other night Ian had asked about another good coach that competed against Toe Blake. While confirming my info came upon a story that in 1955 ,Doug Harvey had scored against himself giving Detroit the Cup.What is the story there?

Robert L's picture
In game 7 overtime, Tony Leswick of Detroit flicked the puck high into the Habs zone, and Harvey reached for it up high with his hand, redirecting it behind Plante. That was 1954. One year later, with the Rocket suspended, Habs again lost to Detroit in 7. Canadiens could have won 8 Cups in a row!

Thanks, don't remember having had heard that before.Had heard that he was as good or maybe even better ballplayer then as a hockey player (hard to imagine)

Alright ... I'm bored so here are my predictions for the west: 1 - Detroit - no brainer 2 - Dallas 3 - Calgary - the Northwest is a tough call 4 - San Jose - should see a little more offense with the new coach. Look out for a healthy Cheechoo this year. 5 - Anaheim 6 - Minnesota 7 - Edmonton - gotta love Cole! ... Eric not Bob. 8 - Phoenix - full year with Bryzgalov will make a difference 9 - Chicago - not enough depth yet. 10 - Nashville - coach Trotz will keep them in the hunt 11 - Colorado - Raycroft ... WTF were they thinking? 12 - Vancouver - they won't have Mats so they're screwed. 13 - Columbus - If Umberger can light up the league like he lit up the Habs then they might have a chance. 14 - St. Louis - watch out in a couple years. 15 - LA - will be battling the Habs for the Cup year after year for the next couple decades. Spots 6 thru 12 is going to be one mother of a logjam. I really like the moves Edmonton and Phoenix made in the off-season and they should squeek in.

cautiousoptimist's picture
If L.A. can pick up a goalie, it won't repeat its basement performance from last year. They may not make the playoffs, but then nobody thought Washington would last year either. And I think Chicago will surprise a lot of people. My guess, for what it's worth: 1 - Detroit 2 - Dallas 3 - Anaheim 4 - San Jose 5 - Calgary 6 - Chicago 7 - Minnesota 8 - Edmonton 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. A piece from THN's interview with Paul Kelly. http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/17683-Screen-Shots-QA-with-NHLPA-e... "THN: Turning to the NHL ownership picture, there’s a sense some observers get that there’s an elaborate shell game going on here, that the league is operating in a shaky U.S. economy, that three to five teams may be on the market. If there are teams that are relocated, do the players deserve to be heavily involved in the process?" "PK: A couple things here: No. 1, we haven’t heard about any plans at all to relocate teams or to expand. But under the collective bargaining agreement, the players have no voice and no role, in a technical manner, as it pertains to relocation or expansion. And we don’t derive any financial benefit from that, which I think is a mistake. If the league wants to consider us partners – which I think is a misnomer, but at least ‘joint venturers’ – then players ought to have a say in the relocation or expansion of teams and share in some of the revenues there. My view is that it is difficult for some of those teams, particularly in the American sunbelt, where they don’t have the establishment of hockey at a youth level. I grew up in Boston and there were youth hockey leagues everywhere. Every town had two or three rinks in it, and the game was and is part of our upbringing there. But if you’re in Phoenix or you’re in Florida, it’s really tough for those teams to put people in the seats and sell the game. We understand that and maybe the revenue-sharing system is part of the answer. But our view is that if teams in any region suffer (financial) losses three or four years in a row, then stop complaining about it in a (business) system you created and imposed here, and start asking the question whether you’re in the right place. Rather than complain about it, maybe you ought to start saying, ‘Okay, folks, it ain’t working,’ and maybe you ought to find a place it will work."

I just read that article too ... I really like that Paul Kelly fella. He's gonna be real good for the NHLPA.

You gotta like this... "The only professional sporting franchise that truly sort of compares to the Maple Leafs in recent history is the Chicago Cubs. If ever there was an example of the Toronto media playing someone up to light years above his actual worth. Mats Sundin is a 37 yr old player who has only broken the 85 point barrier twice in his entire 17 yr NHL career. Once in 1992 with Quebec (the year the Habs last won the cup) and once in 1996 with Toronto. He hasn't broken the 80 point barrier in 10 years now. He's never won any individual awards that I recall, never lead his team to any sort of championship, in fact the Leafs best run in the playoffs came when he was injured early and missed most of that run with McCauley getting most of his ice-time in his absence. Why the fascination with this guy when there are FAR better players that have been available, and have come and gone (or stayed) over this free agency period? Jagr, Shanahan, Naslund, Forsberg, Sakic & Tanguay for example.

The Cat's picture
Sundin is a career + player, Koivu is a career - player on better teams than Sundin Id say... Sundin is a better rounded player and vastly superior to Koivu. People should ask why this fascination with Koivu instead.

cautiousoptimist's picture
Had he ever had better linemates better than Tucker, Antropov or an over-the-hill Gilmour, he'd have shone like the star he is. He's a bit like Koivu in that regard -- can you imagine what he could do on a line with a real star? 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. xaverian001's picture
I believe Koivu is one of the elite playmakers in the game and has never had a finisher on his line. Hopefully he spends some more time with Kovalev this year. I would love to see Saku & Teemu play together in the NHL ... they've been phenomenal on the international stage.

Ali's picture
i remember the days when the Corson - Koivu - Recchi line was considered one of the best in the league.

Robert L's picture
From Canadiens.com on Koivu Having finished up the 2008 playoffs with an impressive nine points in seven games after battling back from a broken foot, Koivu will get the chance to join some elite company in the Canadiens’ record books this coming season. Team captain since 1999-2000, Koivu now boasts the second-longest reign in club history behind only Jean Beliveau as he continues to leave his mark on the rich tradition of the league’s most storied franchise. Thanks to his 56 points last season, Koivu passed former Habs Claude Provost and Mario Tremblay on the all-time points list, and that may be only the beginning for the 33-year-old center. Gunning for his sixth straight 50-plus point season, Koivu is now breathing down the neck of some of the biggest names in team history. With 591 points now under his belt, Koivu is on the brink of leapfrogging the likes of Dickie Moore (594), Mats Naslund (612), and Elmer Lach (623) as he climbs his way into the Canadiens Top 10. As if that weren’t enough, Koivu is also only five helpers back of Maurice Richard, who holds down the No. 7 spot on the Habs’ all-time assist list with 421. Once he slips past “The Rocket”, Koivu will have only Yvan Cournoyer’s 435 assists standing between him and the No. 6 slot.

Moey's picture
i read that article earlier Robert, he plays on a broken foot and gets nine points, he's a warrier and we're lucky to have him. This is the guy that people on here want traded, demoted etc. Unbelievable, I don't care if he finishes his days filling Gatorade bottles on the bench, I want him to retire a Hab.

cautiousoptimist's picture

The funny thing is, he likely could fill Gatorade bottles all year and then still lead our team in scoring in the playoffs. I hope everyone remembers last years playoffs when Koivu starts slowing down in the regular season.

Ali's picture
Can I give you an AMEN!!!!

Robert L's picture
His numbers have never reflected his true contributions. I'm proud to be a fan of the team captained by this man.

Moey's picture
You know the old saying, never fall in love with a racehorse or a hockey player, it'll end up just costing you money, but there are exceptions, Saku is one of them.

Corporate's picture
1. How many times did Tanguay have over 85 points? 2. How many times did Koivu and Kovalev have over 85 points? 3. Who did Sundin play with over the years??? Case closed... ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Nahlsy's picture
Mogilny? Roberts? Sakic? Nolan? I guess we forgot some of those linemates. Remember that nobody compared Sundin to Koivu, he was being compared to players such as Jagr, Sakic, Forsberg, Naslund, Shanahan, Hossa etc (all of which were also free agents this summer)

joeybarrie's picture
He has also never had less than 70 points on a team that hasnt done ANYTHING. The kid is a rock star and EVERYONE knows it. We need a big guy, a TEAM leader. SOMEONE WHO HASNT WON ANY INDIVIDUAL awards, except the mark messier leadership award. NO ONE think he isnt incredible. OK maybe just you...

Nahlsy's picture
Ok, How many times have you noticed Jagr, Hossa, and crew scoring fewer than 70 points? Sundin's a solid point per game man but, no more than that. He's been on Leafs teams that have gone to the Semis a few times (mostly when he was injured of course) yet the media's making him out to be Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux rolled into one with all of this hype. Sundin vs Selanne, Jagr, Sakic, Forsberg, Naslund, Shanahan, Hossa.... It's just not a contest, they've all got far superior resumes.

xaverian001's picture
Think of the linemates and supporting cast he's had over the years though and the numbers look a hell of a lot more impressive. All the players mentioned above have played on MUCH better teams!! Naslund and Tanguay shouldn't be involved in the comparison though imo.

Nahlsy's picture
Naslund's scored more points than Sundin has since 2000 and is two years younger. Tanguay and Sundin have been pretty much dead even in scoring over that span as well and Tanguay is FAR younger. The fact that you felt they didn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath proves my point exactly. The media's hyped him up to Godlike status when he's a consistent point per game performer who's now 37 but, not a mega-star worthy of the pedestal he's been put upon. There have been far better players available in this offseason and some being dismissed who are easily as good as he is at worst.

Drive_For_25's picture
I believe he's had about 75 pts. a season for the last 11 seasons or so. That's pretty good if you as me. And he's played for the Laffs for all those seasons, that's really good on a team like that because you know he's not getting set up a whole lot.

habsfor25's picture
the fact is last year people picked up to finish 13th or lower and we came into that season not having much expectations of going anywhere and we were an under rated team so their wasnt a lot of pressure on them... now coming to this season people are picking us to finish in the top 5 which gives our team a lot of pressure and it may effect how the habs play.. so lets just wait and see how carey price can handle being in nets and not choke and how our young players play and of course if kovalev decides to come and play every single game... and with all this mats sundin crap... its time to say goodbye cause frankly its getitng extremely annoying now he may make a decision after the season starts next its going to be at the trade deadline... the guys confused and probably will just retire

Drive_For_25's picture
I don't listen to what the so called "experts" think so you really think the players are going to let that effect them play???? I also think that the team came into last season with high hopes. The season before was not as bad as what we finished, with the flu running through the team, a cancer like Samsonov, and Huet getting hurt and not being able to stay hurt for one last game, all of those were factors in missing the playoffs, not excuses but things that happened that could be changed in the next season. I don't think they expected to do what they did, but to say they had not many expectations for last year is just crazy. I think this team is past folding under pressure situations and matured a lot last year. You can be skeptical if you like, but I know I'm getting more and more excited to see the Bleu, Blanc, Rouge light it up this year!! GO HABS GO!!!

Sakus Evil Twin's picture
I called Mats to be a Ranger right from the start. The Rangers mantra for the past ever has been to have big-name players on their team and little has stood in their way to do it.. In recent years... When they wanted Messier they got him When they wanted Gretzky they got him When they wanted Jagr they got him Looks like it's Sundins turn... That system will mean that other teams with cap and low cap-hit players are going to benefit. I always thought Scott Gomez would look good in a Habs jersey... Realistically though Dubinsky could become available and it clears up 3rd line center issues. A Hab is a Hab is a Hab, you see...

RetroMikey's picture
No. 1 priority for Mats is waiting to see what Cliff Fletcher and the Leafs have in store for him this season for one last farewell party season for him. I don't see him going anywhere else but Toronto or just plain retire and have the big gala party at the end of the season put on by the Leafs. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

that was way better than anything henley could have written

Now he's just p***ing everyone off. What's he going to do? Cherry pick the team with the best record in December? Maybe we will win the cup in our centennial year, maybe we won't but this team is getting better by the year and it will come if Gainey is allowed to continue building. To hell with Mats Sunbeam! Perennial loser.

Corporate's picture
Like Gainey said. he is 37 and hasn't really started training yet... As of now, I would believe his value has dipped just a little bit and a team would be taking a chance to play with him.. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Couple of cents from the peanut gallery: (1) We were a solid team last year. We had team chemistry. We had a solid offence. We have youth. Our young players have experience than before. We could have gone further in the playoffs but we overachieved on many expectations. Now in our centennial year we will have to meet them. (2) Bob Gainey and Trevor Timmins brilliantly refilled an empty cupboard that got demolished because of the Rejean Houle and Mario Tremblay era. All of our players know that they are others ready, willing, eager and most importantly capable of taking their spots. Nothing is guaranteed now. (3) While some may question Bob Gainey regardless of what he does, he added Alex Tanguay and Georges Laraque which is a nice combination of offence and toughness with $7M in cap space to spare. Ryder was no longer the player he once was and Tanguay is an upgrade. Smolinski showed up in the playoffs but coasted the rest of the year and it's time to play Chipchura. Huet was a good team man but it's time for Price and Halak to shine. Marc Denis is good insurance for the team. Laraque adds a level of toughness that was missing and is known to be a consumate team player. Guys like him cause others like Lapierre, Latendresse to grow in size and heart. Why do you think Edmonton offered him a longer contract term yet he still came here? (4) Granted, we need a big centerman down the middle. But if it's not Sundin it will be someone else. If Gainey has shown one thing, it's that he's not stupid. And I'm of the opinion that if you (i.e. Sundin) don't want to play in the passionate, pressure-packed, media-scrutinized confines of the Bell Centre then go elsewhere. We don't need nor do we want we you.

RetroMikey's picture
I don't see Bob making any trades until he assess how well we are doing after the halfway point of the season. Teams will then want to dump or unload players and Bob will then be in the driver's seat. I see us makking a trade before Christmas for that offensively talented centreman we need but not before the regular season starts. By the way, I've said this from the start, we are better without Mats and I see us winning the Cup next season! "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Bill H's picture
You may be right about BG holding off until the trade deadline to make a significant trade. There are a lot of question marks in terms of actual performance. Break out years for Higgins, SK74, Latendresse? Will our D continue to mature, esp. Gorges, and O'Byrne? Will Kovy be a star once again? Two young goalies? But I hardly think Bob will be in the driver's seat come the trade deadline. Teams looking for that missing piece that will push them over the top and right into the Stanley Cup final do not hold a lot of leverage. Its the teams with the pending UFAs and aging stars, having missed the playoffs, that have what we and other teams want. BG will not be willing to give too high a price in terms of prospects and picks. Other teams like Pittsburg, Philidelphia, Red Wings, Dallas and San Jose will be bidding on the same players as us. And often, there are GMs that are willing to give up a lot for that one key rental player.

Regarding Marleau as a plan b option, yes, he does have a no trade clause. However, this is a misnomer. It means that the player has to approve a trade before it can happen. In Marleau's case, we do not know his motivation for signing a NTC. It could be he intends to finish his career in San Jose, or it could mean there are some NHL clubs that he feels strongly about not playing for. And given the '07-'08 season he has had, maybe he has had a change of heart about San Jose. Marleau is under contract to the Sharks until June 2010, as a result of a 2 year extension signed in August '07. His cap hit is $6.3M. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Marleau He was drafted in the 1st Round, 2nd overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft behind current teammate Joe Thornton. Although he struggled early in his career, Marleau learned to combine his excellent offensive talents with defensive prowess from former Sharks head coach Darryl Sutter. Marleau has played all ten of his NHL seasons in San Jose. He reached the 500 point mark for his career against the Phoenix Coyotes on November 14, 2007. In the 3 years since the lockout, these are his stats: GP-G--A--Pts 82 34 53 86 77 32 46 78 78 19 29 48 A poor season last year (a drop of 30 pts from the previous year) could be the result of a number of things. In spite of the NTC, I think Marleau is an interesting possibility. We don't know how he feels about playing in Montreal. Maybe he is another ABM (Anywhere But Montreal) player, or maybe he would be open to the idea of making a Cup run with us. Maybe he's washed up, or maybe San Jose would welcome a trade and we would end up with a big, fast 30G scorer. Marleau is 6'2" 220 lbs. http://www.pmfc.com/newnews.html Some additional info on Marleau, including his relationship with coaches, past and present, for those who may be interested. The fact that San Jose has a new coach, Todd McLellan, and they are both from Saskatchewan may or may not suggest a good basis for a future relationship. All things considered, while Marleau in a Habs jersey has a certain appeal, it might not be a good idea to hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

Drive_For_25's picture
We would have to give up way too much in a trade for Marleau. I don't think he's a plan at all for us, and I hope he's not. We have a few guys that could potentially put up numbers as good as him and they're already familiar with the system and obviously have good chemistry with the team, I don't think we need to give up a few guys who are very solid players who we've developed for a guy who seems to be known as the playoff bust for the last 3 years.

DD's picture
Here's a little ditty that will be right up Sundin's wheelhouse and it's in his language too. It's all become clear to me now. ABBA wrote this song with a hidden meaning in the seventies (when Yeats was still dressed in a white suit and was 'Staying Alive'), not unlike Nostradamuse's quatrains, to sway the Big Swede's decision when he came to this crossroad in the 21st century. Now if we could get Mr. Boone to sing it to him, up close and personal, I believe he would see the light. Mike if you can't do that, maybe you could take him to see 'Mama Mia', and elbow him the whole time this song is playing. "Take A Chance On We" ABBA (Anti Black Blues Aficionados) If you change your mind, we were first in line Matsy, we're still free Take a chance on we If you need we, let us know, Gonna be around, if you've got no place to go If you're feeling down, if you're all alone When the all the pretenders have flown Matsy, we're still free Take a chance on we Gonna do our very best and it ain't no lie If you put us to the test, if you let us try

Wouldn't help me with picking out an Abba DVD to leer at but can now sing their songs...uhmmm!!

Frank, what can I say? Notice how I asked Boone to take him to the movie. I've got an image to uphold.

DD When I am going to get the double Jack Daniels we bet on? Never bet against me. I always win buddy! "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

I don't drink, so what are you going to buy me, a double Shirley Temple? I was really asking Yeats, a Belgian for a Becks' near-beer, but you seem like a sucker for punishment. Matsy still hasn't signed on with the losers yet, either, so don't count your chickens before they hatch. If he wants to win a Cup, he'll sign with us, if he doesn't, he's a chronic loser and we don't need him anyways. I'm sorry though, I have to disagree with you about his skills. He would make any team in the league a better team, even Detroit.

I really wasn't expecting that

What is the the draw to New York?? A shot at a Stanley Cup??? ... am I the only one that thinks this team is going to struggle to make the playoffs even with Lundqvist in net? With additions like Naslund, Zherdev and Voros upfront and Redden on the blueline I have a hard time believing they'll be better than last year's team. Jagr is a massive loss to that team not to mention Avery's impact. Who is their impact player now? Zherdev??? I really don't understand the draw to NYR. Obviously I'm totally biased toward Montreal, but this is just ridiculous. It can't be the money because Montreal & Vancouver have more to offer him. Would he really go there simply because he likes the city?? Come on!! All the experts agree that Montreal is the best fit, so what the #$%& is he thinking? I just want this to end sooooooon!!!!!!! One way or another.

All the experts agree that Montreal is the best fit? You mean all the experts at habsinsideout? LOL In truth, in spite of all the speculation, we don't really know what will motivate Sundin to sign with a particular team. Money, potential linemates, Canadian vs American based, best shot at the Cup, travel schedule in the division and conference, appeal of the city, loyalty to the leafs, fear of the wrath of leaf fans, preferred destination of his bride, are all possibilities. We have speculated about them all, but we haven't got a clue, and any hints that Sundin has given along the way are really subject the change. Any comments by Sundin's agent could also be part of a strategy. In fact, we know SFA about the situation.

Perhaps I do read the opinions on this site a little too often, but COME ON! ... it's the Habs!!!

In order for New York to get him, they'll have to unload players as they'll be way over the cap.

I agree. The Ranger faithful will be calling for Sather's head by the end of the year.

I have no doubt Pitts & Philly will finish ahead of them and you can't count on NJ to be in the thick of things as long as Brodeur is the last line of defense ... Rolston was a nice pick up too. I know you guys hate predictions, but here they are anyway: 1 - Pittsburgh 2 - Montreal 3 - Washington 4 - Philly 5 - NJ 6 - Carolina 7 - Buffalo 8 - Boston 9 - NYR 10 - Ottawa 11 - Florida 12 - Toronto 13 - Tampa Bay 14 - Atlanta 15 - NYI

I wouldn't put money on it, but I think Philly's going to be a beast this year, and my gut says: 1 - Philly 2 - Montreal 3 - Pittsburgh 4 - Boston 5 - NJ 6 - Ottawa 7 - NYR 8 - Carolina 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

No Washington??? They're carrying a lot of momentum into this season.

I am surprised you picked Boston to finish in 8th spot. I see Philly and the Rangers to me our main competitors along with the big bad Bruins (Claude Julien IMO is a top 5 coachhin the NHL) well and Washington scares the heck out of me with their talent on the rise and Bruce Boudreau behind the bench! "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Retro - That address was 427 Pomona - north end of the street and backing onto New St. This is not a brothel.

200 Pomoma is my address! We've just got the permits to start building. That is why I won't be making the HIO Summit. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

I think Boston will be much improved this year with Bergeron back. Plus guys like Kessel and Lucic should be playing with more confidence based on their performance in the playoffs last year. I think Carolina could be pretty dangerous again this year if Ward can get it together.

When looking at the east, it is more wide open than ever before. I think there are only 3 teams with guarenteed playoff spots. (By guarenteed, I mean I would bet a lot of money on them) Montreal, Pittsburgh and Philly. The rest are all very similar in terms of expectations. I agree with most of your predictions, but something like this wouldn't surpise me either. 1)Pittsburgh 2)Montreal 3)Carolina 4)Ottawa 5)Boston 6)NYR 7)Tampa 8)New Jersey There are so many questions with all of the other teams. Those standings I just gave are in no way what I would predict, I'm just saying they wouldn't surprise me. Theo in Washington is a huge question. Can Buffalo bounce back? Can Tim Thomas do it again? And no one knows what to expect from Tampa. The list goes on and on. It will certainly be interesting for the bottom 4 or 5 playoff spots. We may even find oursleves there..it's that wide open.

xaverian001's picture
Gerber is too much of a question mark. I think Ottawa is going to be seriously on the bubble this year. Tampa is strong upfront, but their D is brutal. I feel sorry for Mike Smith.

Did you forget the fact that you just said Philly was a playoff lock? :)

Wow can't believe that you don't have philly in there.... they basicly have the same team that beat our habs last year and they will be getting gagner back ....

MikeL's picture
LOL, Philly was supposed to be in there, hence my prediction before that. I just forgot to put them in, probably because there are so many potential playoff teams.
