Canadiens goalie Carey Price, slimmed down by 20 pounds, lines up a putt at today's team tournament. Allen McInnis, Gazette

The Canadiens are stickhandling their way around Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club at this hour, taking part in the team's annual golf tournament to benefit the team's Children's Foundation. The Gazette's Pat Hickey is representing Inside/Out, perhaps even well.

Fourteen players and a galaxy of stars from the past are joining captains of industry and other well-heeled folks for a great cause. Most of the club's European players are not on hand, still at home given the fact this year's tourney is scheduled well in advance of the Sept. 19 start of training camp. Not here: captain Saku Koivu, Tomas Plekanec, Jaroslav Halak, Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn and Roman Hamrlik.

Newcomer Georges Laraque has personal commitments until Sept. 12, while defenceman Andrei Markov, a non-golfer, will attend the evening dinner.

A good number of players and management figures stopped on the steps of the clubhouse to talk about the season ahead and their expectations for 2008-09, when the Canadiens will be seen not as the bottom-feeder many figured they'd be last year. Here's a slideshow of images from The Gazette's Allen McInnis. And you can spend about 45 minutes listening to:

President Pierre Boivin, clip runs 6:18 (begins speaking about Mats Sundin).
General manager Bob Gainey, 6:35.
Head coach Guy Carbonneau, 5:40 (begins speaking about Sundin).
Goalie Carey Price, 4:24.
Defenceman Mike Komisarek, 8:00 (begins speaking about Alex Tanguay).
Forward Tom Kostopoulos, 4:03.
Forward Steve Bégin, 2:56.
New forward Alex Tanguay, two clips: 9:35 (French and English); and 1:14.

Great to see you back Dave from the China.
Great audio from covering the golf tournament.
Quite a summer here on this site with this ridicuous Sundin saga brewing!
I feel alot of heart's are broken with Mats not announcing his intentions.
It was expected right from the beginning of last season when he did not want to waive his no trade clause.
He does not want to win a Stanley Cup.
His heart is still in Toronto, and nowhere else.
I, for one believe he is waiting for that final offer from Cliff Fletcher in Toronto on Friday.
We are a better team without him. I've said this all summer.
What's your opinion Dave? Inquiring minds want to know!

"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

I gather that Tanquay just confirmed Roy's sweater being retired?

Love the Tanguay clip.
Very intelligent guy.

I liked the way he handled himself also, particularly in noting that he's not coming in to be the Gretzky of Montreal and that he recognizes there will be more than one good line on the team.

It's a far cry from the Briere saga last year where he felt like he was THE man and demanded to play on a certain line... good thing we got Alex and not Danny

If any of you are having a bad day just read this, it's a comment from somebody on The Toronto Stars website. It was right after the article about Sundin's radio interview today.

As a Leaf fan, I have been waiting all summer to see what Mats will do. For me it's as simple as this: With Mats in the lineup, we have a chance to get to the playoffs - hence a chance to win the cup. Without him, we're definitely going to miss the playoffs. I know it's time to move on and all that - but come on - we have nobody to replace him with. Anyone who doesn't want to sign Sundin, don't come back in February when we're 5-10 points out of 8th spot, blown the Tavares pick chances and change your minds.

So all that I've got to do to lose these 20 pounds is to stop snacking before I go to bed? Sweet!

A question for Mr. Stubbs...

There is talk on the RDS boards suggesting our friend Guillaume arrived, looking 20 pounds lighter, and generally fitter.

Just wondering if you happened to see him or talk to him.

Can't help but hope that a lighter Latendresse means a quicker Latendresse. A quicker move to the outside would pay big dividends for a guy like Guillaume..

Dave Stubbs's picture

I saw Latendresse on the steps of the clubhouse and he indeed looked lighter, but then, nobody was going to be winded on the golf course. I'm not sure how many folks, if any, spoke to him, but pinballing from one player to another, I wasn't among them. Tune in Sept. 19 when he and the rest of the Canadiens go through medical and fitness tests to begin camp.

Thanks for that, Dave.

Forget training camp, the season begins when Dave starts to give us gems like these!

Thanks again, Dave!

Great stuff. Love these guys and I'm happy to have them back and ready to go. Can't wait for the season to start! Go Habs Go! :D

Great audio Dave. It covers a wide range & was interesting to listen to, especially after many months without hockey. I enjoyed them all.

Bob Gainey - Brisebois will be back, & Gainey is flexible on renewing contracts during the season.

Carey Price - 20 pounds is a lot of bars.

Mike Komisarek - was asked a lot of questions about his upcoming free agency, & about dropping the gloves.

Interesting that Bob mentions bringing Brisebois back. I really thought he was done. Maybe the player/coach role isn't dead after all...

Mats was on Laffs Lunch with Dreger and Watters. He isn't sure if he will be playing this year. He is having trouble making a decision. His own voice.

The Morning Skate : Did the Sens Rob the Bolts ? Did the NHL Rob the KHL Again ? .. by Stu Hackel .. NY Times ..... http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/02/the-morning-skate-did-the-s...

Simply great listening to the interviews and the players seem very pumped up and can't wait for the photos and video and can't help remembering Ryder's golf slacks last year and Jaro's haircut , awesome job guys. One more thing i noticed was Carbo wasn't so much "I" and was a lot more "WE" so i hope that continues.

Zaskar's picture

I'm definitely missing something when I listen to Bob say "nobody wears a white dress out there all season..."

HUH?

Zaskar's picture

OK, OK, OK...I'm a little slow on the uptake.

I got it now. I feel like the dumb guy Kelso from "That 70's Show"

Highlights so far include a 20 lbs-leaner Carey Price, feeling motivated and confident, Komi having to answer the same question about Laraque and fighting twice, and Bob calling Sergei "the young Kostitsyn boy". Go Habs!

Lee Hayes's picture

"...so,aaaah, you keep your gloves...?" Komi's class came shining through, I wouldn't be able to answer the same question time after time without some annoyance showing through. I did however like Daves question about how long it takes the body to stop aching after the seasons over.

Go Habs Go

Moey's picture

I was laughing at that Komi interview, the french reporter asked exactly the same questions as the Enlish one. What's up with that, I bet Komi was tempted to ask him if he was deaf.

Optimism reigns supreme at Laval, no question. The boys are pumped about returning to the ice, eager to build on what they started last season. Price's secret for weight loss: no more chocolate bars before bed.

Nice to see that the players are as excited for the season as we are!

It's been a while since we've heard this much positive talk from all members of the team. You get the sense that it's no longer just "well we're just trying to make the playoffs" this year and that they all have the conquest of the 25 in 100 as their #1 goal.

Mike Boone's picture

Props to David for all that great audio.
The season has begun!
