Pat Hickey, The Gazette's hockey beat reporter and columnist, is scheduled for knee surgery today.
The indomitable Hickey has been scrambling up and down pressbox staircases, navigating dressing room scrums, playing creditable tennis and closing hotel bars on knees that deserve racetrack euthanasia.
He vows to be back in the saddle for the Canadiens' season opener.
Don't bet against the recuperative powers of a been-there-done-that vet whose rookie year in journalism coincided with the invention of the printing press.
Habs I/O readers who want to send Hickey best wishes can do so by e-mailing him at PHickey@thegazette.canwest.com
Les Canadiens are leaning towards Outdoor Game at the Big "O" .. By Dave Stubbs .. NATIONAL POST ..... http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=766857
Maybe he should let someone like me play at the golf tourney next year so he doesn't blow out his knee again? jk
Get well soon!
don't know if anyone post this already
http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/259121.html
It's in french but basically says that the habs are trying to have an outdoor game next season, Dec 4, 2009, the 100 anniversary to the day. Game would be played at the Big O, and they'd take off the roof for the event.
Take the roof off? Didn't they just spend 180-240 million building a new one again for the umpteenth time?
"Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"
It took us a 7 games in the playoffs to beat the bruins. so much for domination. and there's no way we'll take all 8 games against them this year. It will be a totally different story. You'll see!
Stop impersonating me! I never made those comments! You're a total piece of Sh@#$%^t
Heck, they may even have their own version of Habs Inside/Out....(Bruins Upside/Down ?)......You should go see!
It'd be hard, since they only play six times. :)
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
I think the bruins will give the habs a real challenge. They're much better this year, more so than the habs, and I predict they will finish ahead of us, that is unless we acquire another center and top 4th D man.
I doubt it......I am so looking forward to BGL pounding the snot out of Lucic, and/or Chara...
Can BGL take Chara ? Would love to see that fight.
Gonna be nice to go to Boston and Philly and throw some people around.
Anyone left on Laffs to smack around just to keep the knuckles dusted ?

Exactly. The ONE thing they had on us last year was toughness. With BGL and the extra twenty pounds everyone else carries around because of him, they have nothing. Forwards, defense, goaltending, and management. We dominate them in all categories. Their entire organization pales in comparison.

Mats Sundin Hits Ice at PokerStars.com .. by Brad "Otis" Willis ..... http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/2008/09/mats-sundin-hits-ice-at-pokerstars...
Hey guys,
E.J.Hradek on ESPN has posted his "all time best" players for Northeast division teams. For Montreal, he chose Gentleman Jean for best forward, Doug Harvey for defense, and Dryden between the pipes.
I have two questions for you HI/O'ers. First, who would you select as the all-time best forward, defense, and goal?
My second question is regarding the choice for goaltender, Hradek says: "So many choices! I gave Dryden a slight edge over Jacques Plante. Patrick Roy, George Hainsworth, and a fellow by the name of Georges Vezina are among several others on the list."
I can't argue with any of the names on that list and yet one thing that always pops in my mind is why no list of top Montreal goalies ever seems to mention Bill Durnan. He played seven years, won the Vezina in six of them (!!!) and has his name etched on the Cup twice ('44 and '46). So where does Durnan belong on the list of top Canadiens goalies? I wouldn't put him number 1 but I would put him in the top five.
On a list of the top goaltenders in Canadiens history, I would place Durnan as the Canadiens fourth best goaltender behind, in order, Plante, Roy, and Dryden.
One must remember when looking at Durnan's record of Vezina trophies was that back then the award went to the team that gave up the fewest goals in a season and not by a vote, like today.
Part of the knock against Durnan, is that for all his regular season success he wasn't thought of as a playoff goaltender. if one looks at the standings during Durnan's career the Habs were consistenly a first place team, that only won two Cups. For example, many regard Turk Broda as the equal or better of Durnan because he won five Stanley Cups during this same time`period.
With all that being said I think Durnan had the misfortune to be overshadowed by Plante who came along three years after Durnan retired and through his achievements and personality matched and in some cases bettered Durnan's accomplishments. I also think the fact that Durnan played right before Hockey Night in Canada became a tv staple has hurt his standing in history, in that a lot more people saw Plante and all those who followed actually play goal. Footage of Bill Durnan in action is pretty scarce to say the least.
Plante for me is the clear number one combining individual and team achievement while being the greatest innovator in goal that the game has ever seen. And while Plante, won the most Vezina's (7), don't forget that he also won a Hart trophy (a rarity for any goaltender), and at the age of 42 in 1970-71 as a Leaf posted a 1.88 gaa to lead the entire league.
I would give Roy the slight edge over Dryden based on the fact that Roy never had near the talent in front of him that Dryden did. That's not a knock on Dryden, I just think that Roy was the more valuable goalie.
As for defense, I think that Harvey's a no brainer (in my mind he may have been one of the five best to ever wear the Habs jersey). As for up front, I don't know how to choose between Beliveau and the Rocket. I'll leave that argument up to others.

BF- Le Gros Bill. The man is the complete package. Incredible player and the epitome of class and humility.
BD- Harvey could control the game both offensively and defensively, but Big Bird added the dimension of sheer menace.
BG- Dryden. His career numbers and class speak for themselves.
The Habs have been astute enough to have great goaltending pretty much throughout the life of hockey's greatest franchise. Durnan can stand tall among all the Cup winning goalies we've had. 6 Vezinas in 7 seasons. Why isn't this man's # retired? :)

2008/09 is the season of the Habs
HP - I started to read it but packed it in as i found this insider was just trying to cause controversy.
I didn't see any attempt to start controversy (beyond the natural amount that will always accrue when you attempt something like an "all-time best" list). But then I don't tend to notice these things. What did you see as controversial?
Beliveau over Richard for one.
Debatable, but I don't see it as controversial. (I say this at the risk of starting something).
Richard vs. Beliveau
Seasons 18 vs 20*
Regular Season (RS) GP 978 vs. 1125
RS Goals 544 vs. 507
RS Assists 421 vs. 712
RS Points 965 vs. 1219
RS league leader G 5 seasons vs. 2 seasons
RS league leader A 0 seasons vs. 2 seasons
RS league leader Pts 0 seasons vs. 1 season
Playoff(PO) GP 133 vs. 162
PO Goals 82 vs. 79
PO Assists 44 vs. 97
PO Points 126 vs. 176
PO leader G 1 season vs. 1 season
PO leader A 0 seasons vs. 2 seasons
PO leader Pts 0 seasons vs. 2 seasons
1st-team All-star 8 seasons vs. 6 seasons
2nd-team All-star 6 seasons vs. 4 seasons
Team captain 8 seasons vs. 10 seasons
Hart Trophy 1 vs. 2
Art Ross Trophy 0 vs. 1
Conn Smythe 0 vs. 1**
Stanley Cups 8 vs. 10
Richard was clearly the more dominant goal-scorer (544G in 978GP is 0.556 G/GP vs 507G in 1125GP is 0.451G/GP). But Beliveau was the more complete player (the only other significant statistic Richard beats Beliveau in is PIM). Also, I consider centre a more important and demanding position than wing (a personal bias, though I played the defense in my day).
My point is not to say that I agree with Hradek - my point is that it doesn't seem controversial to me.
* Beliveau technically played 20 seasons with Montreal, but effectively he only played 18. He played a total of 5 games over 3 seasons very early in his career when he was still playing with the Quebec Aces.
** Admittedly not a fair comparison since since the Conn Smythe was first awarded in 1965 (the year Beliveau won it) and Richard retired in 1960.
HF - I'm not going to get in an argument over this and you can through stats around all you want and i don't want to be demeaning to Beliveau as he was a great player and a perfect gentleman and in resources he has Richard beat but i have yet to see a fierce competitor who always came up with the clutch goals and struck fear in the eyes of his opponents and would go thru a wall for his team like The Rocket, point final.
Here's wishing you a speedy recovery Pat! Get well soon.
Pat once that knee is fixed up you could be the power forward we need in the line up! Hope you have a quick recovery.
