Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall when Bob Gainey meets Mats Sundin this weekend?

Suggested dialogue:

Bob: Mats, how would you like to centre Alex Kovalev and Alex Tanguay on a Stanley Cup contender as the greatest franchise in the history of hockey celebrates 100 years?

Mats: Ummmmm, I'll have to think about it. Let me get back to you, Bob.

Fly: Bzzzzzzt! What is it with this guy? Is there a dung heap near here where I can go to puke?

• Taking to David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail, Matt Stajan defends Sundin against criticism by new Leafs' coach Ron Wilson.

"Mats has been a great leader from my first game on," Stajan said. "I don't think our dressing room was ever a problem.
"I don't think you can judge how we did as a team, not making the playoffs, just on leadership."

• The Toronto Star's Rosie DiManno on Sundin's Hamlet act.

• At nhl.com, Dan Rosen rates the Eastern Conference's Top 5 goaltenders. Carey Price is not on the list.

Man, here's an example why you have to take anything Eklund says with the absolute smallest grain of salt.

"Shanahan to the Canadiens (e3)"

For those of you who have been paying attention, and those that frequent this site tend to, you may remember Gainey specifically saying at a certain golf event that he did not have any interest nor was he planning on signing Shanny...e3, ugh...that's suppose to be a "reliable" rating too!

Just when you want to throw up your arms with more angst than all the Bergman films put together, now Mats wants to meet with Bob Gainey. Never mind the glacier like rate at which he makes up his mind, I hope that we know by Monday what his intentions will be.

Habs will win the Cup tonight!

Game 4 of the 1976 finals against Philly on NHL Network, right now!

Game 1 of the series is on my list of all time favorites. And after it was over ,Phillie rolled over and the fat lady singing couldn't save them.I believe Serge said something to the effect "We came to play hockey and they came to play goon,no contest!"Although the first game was very rough!

I believe that Bowman started Lupien, Chartraw, Robinson, Lapointe and Risebrough Game 1 of that series, although I saw it 32 years ago. The message to Philly was - we'll beat you any way you want. It was so good for hockey that those cowardly bullies were hammered by a real team. What they did on the ice was not hockey.

It's pretty cool watching this game knowing that the team would go on to hold on to the Cup for the rest of the decade, and would soon gel into probaly the single best hockey team to ever take to the ice, losing only 18 regular-season games over the next two seasons.

Shanny had his chance, remember?
He said no. That's it. He wanted to go to NY? Now he can stay in NY. Or go to Florida. Or jump off a bridge in Taiwan for all I care.
Lang? What is this? The NHL of yesteryear?
I don't want guys who "might still be able to contribute". What kinda hogwash is that? Why not Yannick Perrault while we're at it? At least we KNOW he can win faceoffs, as well as "maybe being able to contribute".
Sundin can get 70pts EASY.
Now, he's gonna go from 78pts in the NHL to eating börst in Svenska? I can't see it.
Unfortunately, I DO see him pulling a Selanne.
Even though he said he wouldn't.
You know what I say?
He's doing it for the drama.
He's GONNA sign.
Drama, I tells ya.
Where else can he Win?
He's gonna pop out of the opening night cake with a flowing toga wrapped about him and spray-painted on his back will be the words,
Drama Queen 100 / Jusqu'au bout !
Peace Out

Who is that rascally wabbit?

It's interesting that Valentenko continues to be rated in the lower half of the Habs prospects list.

The Original 24 Cups

It's also interesting how Subban is listed above Fisher even though Fisher is listed as an 8C and Subban a 6C. Oh well, as HabFab says below, inconsistent but another bit of handy info. Did anyone else notice they have Max Pac listed at center...would be nice...but, I believe it's a mistake. Maybe it suggests the Habs have plans for this guy, a long term fix for our most obvious need???

I have been watching them for years and I can't figure out how they judge.Doesn't even match their own scoring system. However, it is free and they probably relay on volunteer help. The other players not in the top 20 have not been updated since this time last year.Just like most of the sites, take it as a source and another piece of the puzzle.

Shanny is too old for the Habs im sorry, i have lots of respect for the player but dont think it work out too good, i'd rather see Selanne on the team to be honest.

Fargo Habs Fan's picture

Shanny is a HOFer and all, but I don't really want to see him in Montreal. I'm not an expert, but if we don't get Sundin I'd like to see us start the season with what we have and go from there. Granted, both are on the twilight of their careers, but Mats looks like he has FAR more left in the tank. God I can't wait for October...

~Goose~

October 30, sho's going to St. Paul???

shanny to habs.....while he has lots of experience and so much more he is so old..come on BG you can do better than that.

yes to selanne but he will sign with ducks as soon as schneider is dealt.

If we can work out a way, I would like to see a Nathan Horton as a hab. Perhaps Higgins for Horton.

Robert L's picture

Jacques Martin is not delirious!

Horton would be a great addition, but the Habs would have to add in Rhino, Halak, and a high pick just to get Martin's ear.

I think we can still use a bit of grit.

It's a good day when I can stroll into Coles bookstore and snatch these two good reads for under $20!

What's anyone else reading these days?

I saw those two books on sale at Coles the other day. Is Mcfarlane a decent writer? I will have to pick them up next time I pass by.

It's ironic that it was Brewer who ended up leading the fight against Eagleson when he was one of the first ones to bring him along as an agent. I think, like Orr, there was a little bit of guilt involved. After all, without Brewer, and especially without Orr, it's doubtful that Eagleson would have been able to gain the fotthold he did.

With that being said, Carl Brewer was a different guy. In talking to some of his teammates and in reading several books about the 1960's Leafs, there are a lot of mixed feelings about him. And while they appreciate the stand that he later took against Eagleson there can be no doubt that to this day many of them consider him an odd figure.

Punch Imlach and him were bound to clash and unlike Mahovlich, some of his teammates felt that Imlach was warranted in his wrath. Many people forget that after leaving the Leafs, he regained his amateur status to play for the Canadian Olympic team, only to rejoin the Red Wings a few years later. Even odder is when he came out of retirement in 1980 (at Imlach's request) to rejoin the Leafs. Many of his teammates then felt that he was a clubhouse spy for Imlach, although he would fight long and hard (and successfully) to have his contract paid in full by Harold Ballard.

The similarities with Curt Flood are astounding and for people interested in these kinds of things I would highly recommend the book "A Well Paid Slave" by Brad Snyder which looks at Flood's troubled life and battles with the Baseball establishment. Both Flood and Brewer marched to the beat of their own drummer, it is ironic then that their fellow players benefited the most from their sacrifices, because in many ways Flood and Brewer didn't.

If I make it to the summit, somebody remind me to tell my Eagleson story...can't here.

Robert L's picture

Quite true what you say about Flood and Brewer being similar oddballs. I never picked up "A Well Paid Slave", but did read Marvin Miller's "A Whole Different Ballgame". That book was incredibly insightly as to how the owners fought desperately to retain their stanglehold on the players incomes while getting especially fat on the players efforts. Much the same thing happened in hockey.

Did William Wortz ever write a book, or have one written on him? That would be interesting stuff.

TC's picture

Wirtz never wrote a book, although I'm sure someday somebody will write one. The Flood book is extremely well researched, with many interviews (including Miller). The parts about Flood trying to make a comeback and various players negative reactions to him as well as his own failings in life are pretty devastating.

You mostly...knew about Brewers battle along with Lindsay and Harvey to set up the NHLPA.Wasn't aware until the other day how dominate a defenseman he was.Moey had started a thread in regards to Stanley Cups and when I checked out TML's run in the early 60's found that him and Horton were constant All Stars...my perception up to then was that he was just a pesky agitator .
